2 Spare Tire problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 10/11/2013

Not really an incident, more of a complaint. We bought a 2000 Ranger approximately a year ago. The spare tire was missing and we found out why. The spare tire winch assembly was a block of rust and the sheet metal that made up the holder that the carrier was attached to is so severely rotted that it could not possibly even hold a tire. The sheet metal mentioned is a structural part of the rear frame and it has major rot and should probably be replaced. My son needed a spare tire so since there was no holder he put it in the bed. When he put it in the bed in bounced to the right and put a large hole in the side of the bed just behind the cab. We started to check out the rest of the bed only to find out that it was so rusted that it was literally stating to crumble in spots. While checking it out we put several more holes in the floor of the bed and the sides just by poking around with a screwdriver. The bed is a stepside and there is no metal left under the steps at all, if you were to step on either side you would crack the fiberglass sides. We are now in the process of having to replace the bed. All of the bolts had to be cut out due to the rust. Once we got the bed off we were shocked to see that the frame was covered top to bottom with rust. I have restored older trucks in the past some from the 40's and I have never encountered rust like I have seen on this one, it almost looks like there was no paint on it from the factory at all. We are still in the process of wire brushing the frame so we can spray a rust converter and try to repaint the frame. I have read several other complaints regarding the rust on these trucks and firmly believe that Ford should be held accountable just like Toyota was when they had a similar situation involving rusted frames on their trucks. Trust me I am a die hard Ford fan but I bought this for my son and I am very disappointed.

3 Spare Tire problem of the 2006 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 12/14/2012

I was driving down the road and I hit a bump and my spare tire fell down and out of the truck onto the highway. I stopped immediately and retrieved my wheel of the highway and saw that it was still connected to part of the mount. The next day I drove to a repair shop to put the truck on a lift to look at the damage and realized that the entire frame had rotted under the truck. I left the repair garage and was heading home when I hit a pothole the entire driver side front frame rotted and the wheel fell partially off the truck, so I had the truck towed to my office parking lot and parked it, because it is not drivable anymore. I contacted Ford they told me to have it towed to a local dealership and they would send a rep out to look at it. So I did and the rep never came out and they told me to have it removed, that the rep called them and said they would not repair anything, so the truck still sits rotted and parked, and remember it only has 17,900 miles on it, thank you.

11 Spare Tire problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 03/28/2004

I purchased this vehicle in may of 2001. Today I was checking the air in the spare tire when I noticed the tire is 15" on a 15" wheel. The other wheels and tires are all 16". These tires were all changed from firestone to goodyear when the scare appeared. The dealer changed the tires and surely had to know the problem, but no one mentioned it or corrected it. What do I have to do to get a proper sized wheel and tire? I'm sure this could be a safety hazard or cause me problems if I have to use this spare.

15 Spare Tire problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 04/20/2002

For 3 days in a row I have had all 4 tires and the spare tires, making that 5 tires all together disintegrate. These were the wilderness ht size 14 from firestone. Neither Ford nor firestone want to be responsible. The steel belts have completely come through the tire and I have cracks and gouges in all 5 tires. Noone wants to replace them because they are not part of the recall. I would like to know what the size of the tire has to do with it. Obviously the way the tire is made is the problem. If they have to recall any of them than obviously the problem is with firestone. They should step up to the plate and take responsibility instead of trying to blame the consumer for their failures.

Driver side front tire just separated as I was traveling down the interstate. I nearly lost control of my vehicle. I feel that if traffic were heavier at the time I would have caused an accident because my vehicle swerved very abruptly when the tire blew. It was my spare tire that couldn't have had more than 3000 miles on it. I am very concerned with the rest of the tires on my truck. (dot number: w2hl1py138 tiresize: p235/75r15).

21 Spare Tire problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 10/04/2000

Driving to work at 6:00 am on main street in town at 40 miles an hr when I felt rear drivers side tire blow. Immendiately pulled off road and tread was completely pulled away from the tire. Put on spare tire and went on to work called local firestone dealer at 8:00 to report incident, they told me to bring it in and they would look at it. When I arrived they checked it and said it was not on the recall list, so they could do nothing about it, they said I would have to purchase a new tire. I questioned them concerning the low mileage and the warrenty that would be on the tire itself, they said I could have hit something and damaged the tire myself therefore, they could not cover the tire under the warrenty. The problem I have with that is that I did not hit anything then or in the past and my rim was not damaged a all, which was very clear to them. When I returned to work I called firestones toll free # direct the cust service rep advised me that since it was not on the recall list they could not do anything at this time, but in future if it did come on the recall list if I kept my tire and receipt they would refund my tire and money. I expressed my concern that I am still driving on the same tires, I was very surprised that I was not shown any concern in regards to this and was told to wait until it showed up on the recall list, I asked her how this got on the recall list she told me to contact this address. She said they do not investigate this, that the NHTSA would take care of it. All I want is for someone to look at my tires and assure me that they are safe and also refund my money considering the low milage that was on a 4 wheel drive truck that is suppose to have heavy duty tires. . (tiresize: p245/75r16)( dot number: tire size: p245/75r16 ).

The vehicle came equipped with 16 inch tires, however the vehicle spar tire is only 15 inches.

25 Spare Tire problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

The vehicle came equipped with a "15" spare tire. If the tire was used with the 4 wheel drive engaged, it would put a bind on the axle and cause it to break. 16 inch tires won't fit under the vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted. The consumer felt that the dealer should replace the tires with 15 inch tire and wheel with 16 inch tire and wheel. Scc.

The consumers vehicle had 16 inch original wheels and tires, but the spare tire and wheel were only 15 inches. Consumer feels this is illogical and could pose a serious problem. Consumer thinks Ford should correct the problem by mounting a 16 inch tire as a spare instead of the 15 inch.

28 Spare Tire problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

My tires on the vehicle are 16" and the spare tire is 15" the problem is the spare tire being a smaller size than the others is that it can cause an accident or make the vehicle roll over or damage the differential of the vehicle I want to stress that this is not a "donut "tire. This is suppose to be a regular tire accoding to the owners manual if it was a "donut " it would be labeled as such it has no such markings. I contacted the dealer and the manufacturer and got the same answer from both that's the way you bought it that's the way it is so I assumed that they shipped out many vehicle that were equipped that same way it is a safety issue to not notify the owner but it will also in my opinion cause an accident ie. Rollover vehicle parts failure thank you for your time please keep me notified of your findings. Thank you signed estel keefer.

29 Spare Tire problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Firestone refuses to take my spare tire for reimbursement. Spare has all the correct numbers on it. Spare printed with "for temporary use only" and therefore will not take it. I have not heard of this policy. What does temporary mean? how many miles can I run on it? nobody can tell me. Sometimes you have to run on your spare a long time. Is this spare tire going to be safe ???? ???? ?( dot number: vdhl1py498 tire size: p235/75r15 ).

30 Spare Tire problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

16" tires on vehicle---15" spare tire.

31 Spare Tire problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

Sparetire is 15 inch, other 4 are 16 inch, and spare is not clearly marked as "temporary" creating potential unsafe and mechanically problematic situation if spare is installed for more than a short period/distance.

32 Spare Tire problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Spare tire given by Ford is p235 75 r15, this is the only size that will fit into the spare tire well, consumer currently has firestone wilderness p265 75 r15 and would not be able to put a spare on if needed due to the differences in size.

33 Spare Tire problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Firestone will not honor recall on temp use only spare tire. I feel a 15'' spare on a truck with 16'' oem tires would make the spare more prone to blow out in use. (dot number: vdhl tiresize: p235/75r15).

34 Spare Tire problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

The vehicle came equipped with a spare tire that was not the same size of the tires that were already on the vehicle, also the spare tire does not fit properly under the vehicle, the tire binds up on boths sides and is within an inch of the exhaust pipe.

35 Spare Tire problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Truck came equipped with p 245 75 r 16 tires and wheels, but has a p235 75 r 15 for a spare. Was informed by dealer not to use 4x4 with this combo due to stress on drivetrain. I am also concerned about this from a safety point. I ask that Ford replace the 15 inch wheel combination with the correct size. They are reluctant to do so.
