Rear brake system. (entire rear brake system replaced 4 times in less than 2 years). 2013 Ford Taurus was purchased in may 2013. May 2015 entire rear brake system (calipers, rotors, brake pads, etc) needed to be replaced in may 2015. In October 2015, entire rear brake system again had to be replaced for the second time. November 2015, the rotors were cut. June 2016, entire rear brake system replaced for the third time. April 20, 2017, car is currently at a Ford service center because entire rear brake system needs to be replaced for the fourth time in less than 2 years. I asked for the warranty to be extended but was told by Ford's customer care today that Ford "graciously" extended the initial warranty to 77,000 miles and can do nothing further for me with regard to this matter.

Rear brake on drivers side squeaking, brake is dragging, causing the rotor and brake to overheat. This causes smoke and odor. Upon investigation it was difficult to remove the wheel and the brake calipers to check the brake pads. Vehicle has 27000 miles, one brake pad worn completely down it was opposite of the caliper brake piston. The other pad appeared to have normal wear. At each side of the brake pad there was build up of brake dust and rust on caliper. Brake pads were removed and one was highly glazed and breaking apart at edges. The squeaking was brought to Ford attention they stated the condition could not duplicated. The vehicle squeaked intermittently since 11,000 miles. It has been squeaking for two years.

Brakes/calipers on rear have seized twice in last 6 months resulting in replacement of calipers/brakes/rotors on rear. No uncommon use of vehicle. Brakes/calipers on front have seized once in last 6 months. This happened following the replacement of strut. Front struts bearing had seized and fractured on the passenger side of vehicle. No uncommon use of vehicle took place. No accident sustained. Problem was noticed when vehicle was turning (loud crunching and scraping noises).

In August, 2015, back brakes began grinding and scraping. Turns out the rear calipers had seized resulting the in the brakes grinding down to the plates. These were newer brakes and vehicle was recently purchased. Following the brakes and calipers being replaced, I was once again (October, 2015) back at the mechanic with the same issues. The calipers had once again seized on the back brakes, resulting in a chunking/grinding sound regardless of if I was braking or not.
Letter from congresswoman slaughter on behalf of constituent re safety concerns with 2014 Ford Taurus (attn: john pellito). The consumer stated he experienced a rear brake drag which resulted in an excessive amount of heat build-up in the left rear wheel brake assembly. Upon returning from a short 125 mile day trip, an unusual hot burning smell was noticed and an excessive amount of heat was coming from under the vehicle. At one point, two very loud/hard metal bangs were heard and the left rear tire spun in the street from a dead stop. In may mid 2015, the same problem started to occur within short errands and more frequently. It appeared the brake only on that wheel was dragging or locking in position on the rotor causing excessive heat. An inspection revealed the brake pads were heat fused to the caliper knuckle on the left rear wheel and the rotor was heat warped and excessively worn. The dealer replaced the rear brake pads, brake rotors, cleaned the heat damaged and applied a lubricant in the slot of the anchor to prevent the calipers and brakes from binding.
When driving car the left rear brake would make a high pitch noise upon stopping and the brake would lock on momentarially. Had brakes checked for problem and was told the pads and rotors were in good shape and did not show any signs of wear or glazing. The service tech said the calipers tested good as well. Upon driving the car on another night for about 10 miles, the brakes acted up again and I walked around for a visual check. Noticed the left rear (drivers side) rotor was glowing red hot so I snapped a picture of it with my cell phone. The next day we scheduled a service at our local Ford dealership and I was able to show them my picture. They said they were going to order a new caliper and rear brake pads and would call when they arrived. We found out that these items are on back order from Ford. Meanwhile, no car was made available for us to drive until the repairs can be made so we are still driving the car. My wife needs to take a business trip (400 miles each way) and we are not sure if this car is safe. We are assuming that form motor company feels it is safe to drive this car since a loaner was not not offered to us. The brake rotor gets glowing red hot and actually illuminates our driveway at night when we return from a trip into town, which is only 4 miles away. We are particually worried about fueling the car up at a gas station with red hot steel glowing around gas fumes. The heat is so intense that you can feel it from 5 feet away. After reading many different brake complaints I discovered that Ford cannot keep up with brake parts which are regularly on back order. Not really sure why the NHTSA has not flagged this issue yet for a safety hazard. However, we will continue to drive this car until repairs are made and hope that Ford is confident that it is still safe to drive in the meantime.

T this low mileage. Most people who have this problem would think the rear brakes wore out not realizing that the failed calpers caused the problem. Ford should take responsibility for their defective rear brake calipers. This is my and my extended families last Ford product because of Ford's lack of resposibilty.

I noticed a brake issue in 2011 and brought my car into Ford for repair. I was told there was no issue with my brakes. I brought my car to another mechanic who said the pedal was going to the floor and that there definitely was an issue. I brought the car back and they claimed there still was no issue. I called Ford customer care on 12/12/12 and after days of arguing they agreed to fix the front brakes. They advised that there was no issue with the back brakes. I still had a squeak but the pedal was no longer going to the floor. I was told a squeak can be normal. Last week I noticed a grinding sound coming from what appeared to again be the brakes. I have 12,000 additional miles on the car since first bringing it in. I am now told that the back brakes need a complete repair because the caliper is locked and the pads and rotors are destroyed. I asked why this wasn't fixed before and they said it was not something Ford was going to cover because it was not locked at that time. I am 6000 miles over the warranty and was told that I would have to pay $560. 00 for the repairs. I looked online and found a host of others complaining of the same issue and also found a service notice (TSB 10-7-2) posted by Ford motor company advising how to repair "rear brake drag or rear brake noise". This bulletin was issued for vehicles (including the 2010 Ford Taurus) build on or before 12/14/2009 and discusses repairing calipers as is needed in my repair. I was outraged that this problem was out there but that they did not correct the problem back in December when I complained of brake issues. After calling the customer service department and speaking with a customer service supervisor ([xxx] id#[xxx]) I was told they would not cover this repair because it doesn't apply to vehicles built where mine was built or because of some other reason they could not explain. The contact owns a 2009 Ford Taurus. The contact was traveling 30 mph when the brakes were applied in order to make a right turn; however, the vehicle spun around. The contact was able to drive the vehicle, but the rear driver side wheel was dragging. When the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic, he stated that the calipers were frozen and failed to release. The mechanic had to replace the calipers and rotors on the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 46000. Updated 01/20/11

Application of brakes causes car to shake and shimmy. Rotors, pads and calipers replaced twice. Replaced right front bearing, ball joint, sway bar link and half shaft the second time, do to bearing wear and squeak. None of the above has fixed this problem. It is especially bad when the brakes are being applied while going around a corner.

It appears that the original calipers on both rear brakes became frozen. On Saturday, 5/18, 2002 I noticed a grinding sound. I took the car to midas on Monday 5/20, 2002. All rear brake parts had to be replaced as it was a metal to metal situation. Since the car was unsafe to drive, I had the repairs done at midas.

1997 Ford tarus has brake problems. Began with shaking of steering wheel when brakes applied at exits off of interstate. After 3 attempts from Jan 99 thru oct 01 to get the local Ford dealer to repair under warranty I had them semi- repaired at a local just brakes repair shop where I was told that calipers weren't releasing. Still have brake noise as if calipers are not fully releasing.
