Ford Taurus owners have reported 7 problems related to crankcase (pcv) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Taurus based on all problems reported for the Taurus.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Taurus. While driving approximately 70 mph, the oil pressure warning indicator illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and called a tow truck. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (westway Ford in irving, texas) where it was diagnosed that the oil pressure sending unit and pcv valve were damaged and needed replacement. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: cas14131690. The failure recurred on January 7, 2018. The vehicle was not repaired again. The approximate failure mileage was 88,000.

Car was brought in to change the serpentine belt at 76,000 miles. Tech noticed that the water pump was leaking through the weep hole and said that it needed to be replaced. This job was quoted at over $2000. Hundreds of other water pump failures have been reported, some as early as 45,000 miles, and Ford refuses to issue a recall. The pump fails at the main bearing and spews coolant into the crankcase which kills the engine and totals the car. There was no check engine light, no warning signs whatsoever. If it were not for a routine belt change this issue would not have been caught and would have resulted in a catastrophic failure of the motor. This is unacceptable as it happens to all duratec equipped Ford vehicles and Ford refuses to cover this failure under a recall for the defective water pump.
I had a internal water pump failure filling the engine with coolant. This resulted in a engine hydro lock condition (luckily I was able limp a very rough running car in the emergency lane at 15mph to a nearby exit). Happened Friday evening Feb 3rd 2017 on a cold 27 degree evening. I was stranded north of nashville, TN on i65. This is a very very bad design flaw. I am mechanically inclined and most cars have external water pumps -- except this one. Not just the Taurus, but all 3. 5 (and 3. 7) motors have a internal water pump design; driven off the overhead cam chain. When it fails, it fails big, dumping all coolant (several gallons) into the crankcase. End result: is a high potential for engine failure as all components including in my case the eco boost turbos submerged in coolant / antifreeze. Learning now it may be $8-9k for a new motor. Besides this expense is to know this engine will hydro lock with all the coolant in it and cannot be easily driven to a safe location seems very very dangerous to me. If the exit were not less than a 1/2 mile away I would have been stuck. No one wants to be on a dark freeway for 1-2 hours waiting for a tow truck on a cold Friday night. All is takes is one person from behind to slip off into the emergency lane and then it's all over.

While driving the engine overheating display came on and the engine lost most of its power. Upon ispection the radiator coolant tank was empty. Filled the tank with water and drove to the nearest Ford dealer. The dealer said the water pump had failed and leaked the coolant into the crankcase. No leaks were visable outside the engine. The dealer said that the engine got to hot and there is exhaust gases in the coolant and suggests a new engine because of the 150k mileage on the engine. The important part of this is that this is a very poor design by the engine manufacturer. I am a mechanic/supervisor for a company that has been using the Ford Taurus as it's vehicle of choice for the past 25 years. This failure has happened to Taurus' in our fleet four other times in the last four months with catastrophic failure being the outcome. The vehicles were 2010-2012 with 100k -150k miles. Because there is no outside leak and the leak is slow so that the coolant degrades the oil and internally damages the engine before a loss of coolant causes the engine to overheat. This has been the case with all but one of our vehicle failures. A water pump replacement before 100k miles should be recommended by Ford and financial assistance by Ford should be offered is a catastrophic engine failure occurs because of this major design flaw.

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Taurus. While pulling into the driveway, the contact heard a rattling noise. The mechanic stated that the belt failed. The failure was repaired, however, the noise continued. Another mechanic stated that the cam sensor failed and, once it was repaired, the noise ceased. The speed was unknown. The current mileage was 61,884 and failure mileage was 61,300.

Vehicle started stalling at expressway speeds, most notably when pulling a hill or during acceleration. This progressed to stalling at idle and low rpm speeds, and eventually led to surging and the inability to keep the vehicle running. This problem led to the vacuum boost for the power brakes failing which caused the power brakes to fail unexpectedly and the vehicle would not stop, hit my garage and caused $3000 damage to my home, and $1000 worth of body damage to the front of the vehicle. Took the vehicle to 2 different Ford dealers. First one stated that it was the fuel pump and pressure regulator, replacing these did nothing but cost $800. Second one discovered that the plastic upper intake manifold was cracked at the egr valve and pcv valve locations leading to the engine running too lean. Stated that this was a common problem on 2000 to 2007 Ford Taurus and that even in the small town we live in he replaced 3 or 4 a month even on brand new vehicles, that Ford was aware of the problem with this part but would not repair or fix. Repairs then totaled an additional $620.
