The coolant is leaking from underneath the vehicle. The engine has rusted and the water pump is warped. The dealership is aware of the problem.
We were driving on the freeway when the car began to lose power. We were close to an off ramp, and exited. At that time, the temperature gauge started to climb, and the engine stopped. We had the car towed to a garage near our home. An engine core plug had failed, the resultant lose caused the engine to overheat, and damage the head gasket. We had to replace the engine for $3900. I have contacted Ford motor company, but they state that there is no recall for this engine problem, so I am sueing them in small claims court. Dt.
Engine coolant turned brown and supposedly corrosive due to so-called poorly designed cooling system. This caused my timing cover to begin leaking and my head gasket and engine to fail while on our family vaction in seattle. I have noticed numberous other complaints regarding this problem in your files and was wondering if there is any recourse that can be taken. I am looking at a bill of approximately $4,0000 to replace the engine. Please suggest any action that I can take to recover all or part of this cost from the manufacturer.
While traveling on highway and without prior warning vehicle was leaking anti freeze from underneath the hood. Dealership was aware of problem. Dealer found freeze plug had rusted out, dealer stated that this condition was a defect, manufacturer denies any claim.
When purchased, this car was serviced, including a cooling system inspection. I also notified Ford by telephone that I had purchased the car, providing the VIN. I was told that there were no recalls on the car at that time. The cooling system was checked 4 months ago, and was fine at that time. Several days ago, the car overheated, spewing coolant when the hood was lifted. I did not, at any time attempt removal of the coolant cap; the coolant was spewing from beneath the closed cap. My mechanic found that the cooling system is completely contaminated with rust and sludge. He also told me that Ford had a recall on the situation. When I called Ford, they told me that the recall was over, that they would no longer cover this problem, and that the recall was over in 1999. I was never informed of this recall. Ford did provide me with a TSB number- 972416. But, told me I would have to bear the cost of the repair. How is it possible that a manufacturer can decide to repair a serious defect for only a limited time, and only if the customer complains during that time? I was stranded in a very bad part of atlanta by this incident, and coolant was spewed all over me. This is a safety concern, in my view, not the 'customer satisfaction' issue Ford termed it on the telephone when I spoke with them today. This situation was produced by a design defect that Ford clearly has knowledge of as evidenced by the TSB. Ford has also produced a retrofit part to correct the situation- f7dz8522aa (coolant recovery kit). Why is Ford not being required to take care of this situation on all affected vehicles?.
When starting vehicle, the engine check light would remain on, followed by shaking and vibration. Also intermittent stalling would occur when coming to a stop or applying accelerator pedal from a stop position, vehicle was taken to dealer shop, and had some severe repairs done, problem concerning engine is still occurring, also rear brakes were replaced, the coolant overflow bottle contained a leak.
1998 Taurus se has had problems with cooling system Nov 2001. Cutter Ford of aiea the agent for Ford made three attempts to repair problem spaning a year and a half. For the time being problem has been solved. However freeze plug has malfuctioned twice now and I am currently getting it repaired. Fuel injectors malfuctioned and where repaired April 2003. I have records of car's problems dating back to 2000.

Check engine went on and engine stopped accelerating, reservoir emptied, dealer says out of warranty.
Ford provided a no-charge service program, number 98b23 to owners of 1996 and 1997 Taurus and sable vehicles equipped with a 3. 0l engine. The purpose was to check the cooleng system and install a coolant by-pass kit. This program was eligible through February 28, 1999, regardless of mileage. Only first owners were contacted. My daughter as 2nd owner was not. She gave me the car in June,2001 and neither one of us had an inkling of the coolant problem. My car engine blew with no warning. We are lucky to survive the incident. Ford doesn't want to hear about the incident. All they can say it's out of warranty. This is a potentially dangerous problem with this vehicle. I think it should be investigated. The public should be aware of the design flaw so they could take care of it before it causes a serious accident. I would like to be contacted to hear from you if anything can be done about this. Thanks.
We were driving on a busy freeway when the engine failed and completely stopped . We had no prior knowledge that the car had a cooling system problem. My daughter gave me the car so I would have a "safe" vehicle to drive. She owned it for the 3 years prior. Bought when it was a year old. Was never notified of a recall or adjustment for the cooling system by a kit provided by the Ford company. The Ford CO. Has an extended warranty to 100000 miles on their Ford Taurus 3. 8 engine but not this 3. 0l although the same problem exists, blown head gaskets, cracked heads, etc. Would appreciate some help. This at least my 4th form I filled out trying to get an answer from you. Can I expect one or am I just blowing in the wind? lillian c. Carson.

A recall for brown coolant had been performed on the car in December of 1998. The brown coolant from what I understand now was rust. The dealership replaced two freeze plugs, however the plugs used are not the same as the original. The new plugs were held on with a clamp. It turns out that the rust was already in the coolant system and after two and a half years and approximately 30,000 miles later the clamp rusted out and the coolant poored out of the car which in turn caused the cylinder to crack and burn two head gaskets. Apparently their recall was a bandaid that didn't heal the wound and only caused further damage over time.
Low coolant light came on, but car did not overheat, but antifreeze did leak out of heater block. Took car to dealer. . . Heater block threaded incorrectly to engine. Now told I need a whole new engine! I have only had car for a month!.

I notices there are several complaints regarding a cooling system problem. I too have an issue with brown rusted coolent that caused the head gasket to fail. I was told today that it will cost aproximatly $5000. 00 to repair. They want to replace the engin, radiator, heater core, water pump, etc. The service manger at the dealer said that this is caused by poor cooling system design that causes a rust build up and the eventual blown head gasket. Since this is an obvious design flaw with many accounts listed on the NHTSA, I would like an investigation and the possible recall by the manufacturer (Ford).
Coolant is leaking onto motor. Dealer has inspected and repaired vehicle; however, problem has reoccurred. Please provide additional information.
Coolant discolorated( rusty and brown) goodyear mechanic explained it was what is called "brown death" caused by engines not being properly processed at foundry(possibly left sand and metal shavings inside engines. Engines overheats, coolant runs out freeze plugs blow out thermostat locks up water pump fails temperature gauge doesn't register that its overheating.

Engine and coolant system failed. Head gasket blew. Koons Ford of annapplis, MD said I need a replacement engine for $4,500. Called Ford service rep. He said the problem is not a product defect and Ford will not help with repairs.
Heat gauge went up and down. Took vehicle to dealer who flushed coolant and found coolant had broken down and damaged engine. Vehicle still at dealer at this time. Blown head gasket.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Rusty coolant returned after flushing, coolant failed, coolant froze, radiator brken, engine overheated, needs head job or new engine. Ford balking at recall repair and responsibilty for subsequent damage.
I brought my car to my local mechanic when I noticed antifreeze leaking from the car in my driveway. Due to complete corrosion of coolant system, this resulted in the replacement of freeze plugs, water pump, radiator, head gaskets, thermostat and heater core. I will have to bring it back in April for another radiator flushing. I later learned from a radio talk show that there had been a recall on the coolant system for this auto. When I contacted Ford, they told me there was an owner notification sent, but I never received it and it expired August 1999. Ford or the dealer refuse to do anything so I don't know if the recall has been fixed by my repairs or not and will this happen again. Ford has also refused to reimburse me for any of the costs. I would appreciate any assistance.

Consumer noticed a slight odor after driving, the coolant system was checked and the container was brown and mushy so the fluids were replaced, a few months later, the coolant system was mushy and smelly again, a Ford representative stated that there had been a recall, but it had expired, the consumer never received a recall and is requesting that the recall work be complete, Ford would not repair or be responsible since the recall has expired.
The cooling system failed while I was waiting in line at the bank, and threw out the freeze plugs, I surfed the internet to see if the car had a recall and found out that it did and that several people has had the same problem and was denied. They deny having a recall on the cooling system , which required a bypass kit to stop the car from running hot. I actually got this information on your web site, I showed the recall paper to the dealer and they still denied it, I had to pay for expensies out of my pocket and for the rental car. The recall was in 1997, I was told that if I did not have the original recall paper there was nothing they could do and denied me the claim. I had to take the car back because it still was not heating and was told that I would have to pay another $600. 00 to have a heater coil put in, in which I have never had any problems with heating or cooling before. They flushed the system again and I am still having heating problems and the car still runs hot, and still not heating proberly, even though they put the bypass kit on from the recall that never existed and charged me for it. They left parts aloose and you can hear it rattling. I did more research and found out that the car has 7 prior historys before I purchased the car. No one will acknowledge any of the research I have found, I have several documentation verifying all that I have told you, all I want is to be reimbursed for the repair and the car rental that cost me $591. 12 and my car fixed the way it should be before my engine blows like others with the 96 Taurus has. Can you please help me?.
I was denied the claim by Chrysler finacial. Because the rust colored coolant that the car was manufactured in came out when the freeze plugs came out and they denied the claim because they said I did not keep reciepts for the anitfreeze in which I purchased for the maintenance. , no one keeps those reciepts, I had to pay for the car repair and the rental car bill which was $668. 73 and $591. 12 I feel that I was denied wrongfully when I have paid on this warranty for 4yrs never used it and when I need it I got denied by both chrylser finacial and bob dunn and Ford motor company.
Afraid to drive car, don't know when to expect next failure. No contact from manufacturer, do they care?no safety defect listed.
Consumer received manufacturer's recall notice in 1999 about engine cooling system. Consumer had repairs done which replaced reservoir and heater coil. Since then, problem still persists. Recall did not remedy the problem. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated nothing else they could do . Also, contacted Ford, and Ford stated warranty expired, and nothing they could do. Please add VIN.
Coolant system corroded out freeze plugs. Coolant ran out and engine stalled with no warning. Engine is having to be replaced, but Ford says this was not the cause. Reviewing the board here I see more than just me with the same problem. Just as with the firestone issue and Ford its always the other guys fault, not them. For once I would like see Ford take thier share of blame. Ford reps will not even respond to complaint.
The car had about 35,000 miles on it when purdhased it, factory warranty was carried over to us as the new owners. Soon after the sale of the car to us, Ford came out with a brown coolant recall, which ran until September 1999. All owners of these 1997 Taurus were supposed to be notified of the recall by mail. If notified car owners brought their cars in during this time period, the Ford dealers would correct the problem at no cost to the owner. Ford motor company never informed us of this recall. It was not until she brought the car into north bay Ford (in santa cruz, CA) to repair a cracked coolant holding tank on July 19, 2000, that she was told of the required recall work need on her Ford Taurus, but the work was no longer covered under a warranty payment program and the cost was now the owners problem and there was nothing the Ford dealer could do about it. At this time we paid the bill, which was over $500. The brown coolant recall program was required because of a design error in the routing of the cooling system hoses into and out of the dash heater coil and the proximity of the hoses around the engine exhaust manifold. The result was that this problem caused the coolant to turn into brown mud from excessive rusting of the engine block. We never experienced any over heating problems with the car until the coolant tank began leaking. Now, because of the excessive rust in the coolant, a galvanic reaction develops with freeze plugs in the engine block. The dealer insisted on changing the plugs, but he only changed 2 of the 4 plugs. The job also included a complete engine flushing to remove all the old rusty coolant. On July 7, 2001, brown coolant began running out onto the ground for the second time which required another $500 to repair. Ford motors will not do anything to cover the cost of there engineering error.
The Ford Taurus is 1996 and 1997 was used as a guinea pig for an expirimental coolant that rusted out the freeze plugs, water pump, thermostat and more. Mine was found to have this coolant. I have already lost one freeze plug and could loose others. Ford motor company wants me to pay for half of fixing their error. They now want to pay nothing because I did not meet their deadline. My car could be potentially dangerous, leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere. Please help.
