2 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 01/23/2017

Power steering has now failed twice once in 2012 and now in 2017. Complete rack & pinion was replaced in 2012 with 34800 miles, 2nd failure is now 1/22/2017 at 108000 miles. Now replacing steering rack and return line. 1st case exiting highway at 70 mph could not turn wheel or turn right. Could only make left turns. 2nd case leaking fluid and making noise while driving around town. 1st was very scary, thought we would crashing exiting express way. Call Ford cs and they would not do anything due to 4 years but less than 360000 miles. 2nd was less scary but did not have control of vehicle and took 5 days to get service by a local repair shop, to far to drive to a Ford dealer. Not very happy with this happing twice and very expensive over $3000 out of pocket expenses for this vehicle.

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Taurus. While driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel seized and power steering fluid leaked under the vehicle. The failure recurred on one occasion. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). The approximate failure mileage was 42,000.

4 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/14/2015

Experienced intermittent "shudder" in steering system when cornering and/or maneuvering into parking spaces; this condition progressively got worse and finally, there was a sudden total loss of power assist to the steering system almost resulting in loss of control of the vehicle. Noticed large puddle of atf/power steering fluid under vehicle when parked. Upon inspection, discovered that power steering reservoir was empty and the steering rack housing had leaking seal where main steering shaft entered housing leading to catastrophic failure of the steering rack assembly. This is the second time the steering rack catastrophically failed on this vehicle (see: NHTSA id number: 10468922; date complaint filed: 08/02/2012; date of incident: 07/30/2012; component(s): steering). Brought vehicle in to Ford dealer (brondes Ford, maumee, OH) for service. Entire steering rack assembly was replaced again at a cost exceeding $1,000. Ford should be required to recall this vehicle for steering rack due to the numbers of complaints on the NHTSA site alone due to the very nature of this failure - anything steering/suspension/brake-related should be subject for immediate consideration for recall. 5 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2000 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/28/2013

After being parked in garage all nite I noticed the floor was wet as I was about to leave for work. I checked the oil level and power steering fluid and noticed the powering fluid was low and replaced the fluid that had leaked out. A few days later more power steering fluid had leaked out so I had the car towed to a mechanic and was told it was the rack and pinion. Has anyone else had this problem or has there been a recall?.

6 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 09/29/2012

Relearn engine idle, rear brakes basic pc pkg, dorman rear right wheel and left cylinders. During these 3-4 repair shops cannot fix the cruise control to get the car to stop driving it self when above 30mph along with acceleration, back tail light right side shorts out continually. It is very difficult and very unsafe to control a vehicle that has had more than three or four repair shops try their hardest to fix a problem that apparently has some of these problems. I am with the belief that the brake system along the electrical system within the 2003 Ford Taurus ses dohc is unsafe for street use in the u. S. Due to our standards here of motor safety. When put into gear the transmission jumps loud.

7 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2004 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/02/2009

As I was pulling into my driveway I noticed smoke rolling out from under the car hood. When we got the hood up we discovered the hood insulation on fire. We used a fire extinguisher to put it out. Besides the insulation, the windshield washer fluid hose was burnt through and loose from the hood and part of hood was burnt. The body shop said the cause was the result of fluid leaking from the power steering hose onto the hot manifold and starting the fire. This was the first time this has happened in my car. The hood was fixed and windshield washer hose and nozzle were replaced. A new power steering fluid hose has been ordered to replace the other one but is on back order so my car sits at the body shop.

8 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 1999 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

I'll copy anothers post to reflect exactly the way I feel and my experience with this steering issue. . . Rack and pinion seal leaks fluid into the right hand boot and then the ground, causing the power steering not to function properly and failure to the power steering pump. I can't believe Ford doesn't care about the safty and loyalty of their customers and take steps to correct this consistant defect quite common in this model.

9 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/02/2004

: the contact stated that the vehicle's power steering modulator failed twice. The vehicle was taken to the dealer in 03/04 who determined that this was an ongoing problem because the modulator is attached to the engine instead of the firewall which causes it to heat up and cool down with the engine. The dealer determined that engine vibrations damaged the modulator, resulting in power steering fluid leakage. The manufacturer was contacted on 07/25/06 who offered an extended warranty for the vehicle and a complaint was filed.

10 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 1999 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 01/20/2004

Upon starting vehicle consumer heard a noise. Consumer checked the power steering fluid level and found out that the level was low. Fluid was draining into the bellows, which was a rubber boot that protected the inner tie rod. Consumer determined that a snapped ring was missing from the bellows.

11 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 1999 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 09/10/2001

Vehicle experienced a loss of power steering fluid causing steering to be very stiff and hard to control. Refilled fluid and it was okay for approximately 100 miles, then got low again. Each time we filled it, it rapidly emptied, until we could not drive it more than 5-8 miles between refills. Mechanic found that both sides of the rack and pinion were leaking into the dust boots, which were full to capacity with power steering fluid. Whole rack and pinion unit had to be replaced. Ford would not pay for repair at 46k miles, so we paid out of pocket.

12 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 1996 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/13/1999

The power steering fluid had leaked out. Fluid is coming from tubbing that's rubbing against the undercarriage of vehicle. This had caused a pin hole in tube. Also, steering was making grinding noise when turned. Have not been to dealer yet.
