36 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Speedometer and tachometer quit working.

37 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2011

The speedometer and gas gauge in my 2004 Envoy do not work. Just like everyone else here the speedometer in mine sometimes reads over 100 mph when I might be doing 35mph. Most of the time it just stays at 0 so I don't know how fast I'm going. The gas gauge just doesn't work at all. I can't afford the repair and from all the other complaints I've seen gm should fix it for free anyway. How many people have to complain before the ntsb will get behind the car owners? one person here said that gm actually won a lawsuit and was compensated for the faulty parts but did not do the recall on the Envoys!.

38 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2011

One day all my gauges may work I might shut the SUV off and start it again and no gauges will work (speed, oil pressure, battery, gas, odometer, tach) when one works they all work when one doesn't work none of them work and you never know when they will do what they do.

39 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2011

I purchased this vehicle 10 months ago and have to replace the headlights 9 seperate times not including the brake lights 5 times. After the 3rd time the man at the auto parts store stated this is a known problem with GMC> the lights get too hot and burn up the bulb and the connectors. I have had 2 buy now 4 rabbits connectors and they make the bulb last a little longer but the exspense is sad. If this is a known problem and it is posted all over the interent from customers with the same issues why has not recall beem placed for these lights. If it is heating hot enough to melt a connector that is a fire hazard and needs to be recalled. Now my speedometer stoped working and to my surprise I wass advised this also a common GMC problem with the cluster repair being required to fix it.

40 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2011

2004 Envoy xuv, impeccably maintained, had * response to accelerator as I made a left turn at a light across oncoming traffic. Service engine soon and reduced engine power lights illuminated on dash. Was fortunate not to have an accident. Pulled to side of road. Turned off engine. Restarted, and it ran okay but the service engine soon light reappeared. Drove another 35 miles with light on. The next morning it had re-set and the light is gone from the dash. How in the world does gm expect us to be able to replicate such incidents for a tech to fix? such failures will eventually kill someone.

41 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

This vehicle has and had major electrical issues since new. Instrument cluster replaced at my expence at 75000 miles. Now door locks intermittent. Won't open or lock by remote. Rear wiper goes out when door locks stop. Rear door lock out also. Can lock doors from inside and manually lock driver door but rear hatch will stay unlocked. This is a safety hazard especially at night at a mall or even in my driveway. Someone could enter my vehicle and hurt someone in my family when locks are out. In my driveway they could get access to my garage door opener and enter my house. I shouldn"t have to remove my garage door opener everytime I enter my home. I think this is a very serious security issue for my family. I'm retired and can"t afford the repair. I've seen this all over the internet but no fix from gm.

42 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2011

: no air bag/[ deployment failure] front/ side/ rear [ side designed to deploy in rollover or side impact crashes] air bag's failure / deployment complete roll all four sides landed back on wheels. I was slammed onto left driver side window left side face broke the window and glass and dirt filled vehicle seat belt failure: left/drivers only rolled four times landed back on all fours I flailed around head butted the passenger as the force over took my body onsite officer acknowledged the indications seat belt friction burns all on around neck and shoulder traumatic brain injury torn rotator cuff shoulder issues/ also bladder damage as the driver's side seat belt failed to lock during crash dealer should have been cited for seat belt failure worst things of all time . . . It was a test drive engine stall failure : at high speed/ heard noise and boom lost all power steering loud noise loss of power/ I had no ideal at the time thought possible blow out and indicated such to the responding officer electrical - also brake light turn signal failure/ appears to be functional lights signals/ but are not working on the outside others don't see signals or brake lights . I was sited for btw gm should be responsible as well dealership all the recall and complaint's, incident reports accidents and gm major ignition issues. . . . Engine failure while driving/ erosion and many other vehicles.

43 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2011

Instrument cluster was repaired by a local repair person who's been making a living repairing these gauges and clusters for 10 years now. My gauges would fluctuate all over the place and my fuel gauge tells me I have 100+ miles left in the tank and then I run out of gas. Even with the gauges repaired, I still have a faulty fuel sending unit or something that has my "estimated mileage to empty" all over the board. It shows me at 85 miles to empty when I park it, but start it back up and it goes to 140, or sometimes tips me off that it's actually low on fuel. I'm frustrated, can't seem to get any straight answers from anyone.

44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2011

The temp gauge does not read correctly when the engine is running in the correct temp range. The temp needle is either in the overheating position (red area) or totally past the max temp on the gauge, almost spinning like a compass. Because of this false reading I pulled my vehicle over on the shoulder of the interstate, thinking the engine needed to cool down. This was during rush hour traffic, and could have caused an accident on the highway. A search on the internet shows others with the same problem. GMC refuses to replace or fix the guage if vehicle mileage is over 70,000. Guages , oil, water temp, etc, are in vehicles to assist the driver with their driving and for safety reasons and should last a lot more than 6 years. Pulling over on a highway should only be done for an emergency, not because of a false reading, and may in the future, if it has not already cause an accident.

45 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

This is a safety issue in terms of being able to read the instrumentation behind the steering wheel. It is also a fire hazard.

46 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2010

My 2004 Envoy xuv speedodometer stuck at 55mph. I spoke to dealer technician and was told I had to replace the instrument cluster because of a small thing called a stepper motor. This seems to be an on going problem with gm vehicles. I strongly suggest a safety recall because this is failing on thousands of vehicles.

47 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2010

2004 Envoy, 81,300 miles. Fuel gauge and speedometer not working or when they do it is very erratic and unreliable. On a trip through min I noticed the gauge said I was going 70 mph in 45 zone. Then ran out of gas on another trip not realizing the fuel gauge was also not functioning correctly. At this point I use my garmin for determining speed. Looking to get it fixed but was estimated the cost for new instrument cluster panel would be $600.

48 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2010

Speedometer was kinda sticking/jumpy but now staying around 85 to 120.

49 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2010

The speedometer in my 2004 GMC Envoy is malfunctioning, this problem is well documented by many Envoy/GMC owners. Symptoms are indication of movement when the vehicle is stopped, any where up to maximum speedometer indication. At times the speedometer will stay at 0 when the vehicle is moving. Submitted a service request to gm but was deniied any assistance.

50 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

I have a 2004 SUV XLT. I bought my car with 400 miles on it. I had the gas tank replaced early on. Went back to GMC b/c they had not installed it properly. I've had both front and rear sway bars replaced and both knock sensors replaced. My middle window decided to quit working and I haven't gotten it fixed because the guys at the GMC service center said they couldn't imagine what it could be and they would have to charge me $100 for a diagnosis!! my radio/cd player is only half lit up and stops working when it gets too hot from playing a cd. . . I am currently having issues with the fan clutch, thermostat and a leak in my front differential. Meanwhile the guys at the dealership wanted to charge me $1,500 to replace my knock sensors again and didn't even find the leak when they were "diagnosing" my issue. I truly do love my car, but I am super mad about the middle window and super mad about all of these issues. I take care of my car and do all of the routine maintenances. I think I know why it was only on the market for two years. Please help us get our middle windows fixed. I didn't do anything to cause it to stop working.

51 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2010

My speedometer has stopped working. The gas gauge says empty when I have just fueled the car to full. The car will surge forward when I am backing out of the drive way and putting car in drive. I have to immediately press on the brake and return the car to neutral position to stop from running into parked cars or the curb. Tonight we were leaving the park and both headlights ( low beam) are not working. All other lights and flashers on the car work. The interior light on the left half of the a/c controller does not work. The motor in the rear window went out. The dealership charged me $ 1000 to replace the motor and then they advised me that the middle window motor was bad and that would be an additional $600 to repair. I only could afford the back window motor. This car is my only mode of transportation and I cannot believe that gm has npt placed a recall on all of these issues.

52 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

Long term problem with the instrument cluster that grew much worse at the beginning of this year. I'm the original owner and the vehicle currently has less than 88k miles on it. Back in 2010 the tachometer stopped functioning properly. At idle, it was reading 5000-6000 rpm. Kept watching the tach over months and it was all over the place until the needle finally rested at the 6 o'clock position. Wasn't a big deal. Early this year (2013), other gauges started reading improperly. One by one the oil pressure, speedometer, and fuel gauge all went haywire, showing readings outside of their range. The only two functional gauges left were voltage and coolant temperature when I had the entire instrument cluster replaced back in March the cluster is a common problem. There's a thread at edmunds. . Read more...

53 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2010

Speedometer dont work, gas gauge dont work, transmission is going out etc and I only had the vehichle for 9 months now but the problems have been for along time.

54 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

2004 gmac Envoy - the speedometer is erratic. When you drive down road, it is all over the place. I went to dealership and they said no recall. I would have to buy a new cluster - $600 plus labor! interesting there are 4 other people I know that own gm suvs and they are all doing it as well. I have since replaced the cluster and that has fixed but with all the people in my little circle. There is a overall problem with the gm/gmac cars. This could be dangerous and expensive for the consumer.

55 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

Speedometer stopped working correctly on my 2004 Envoy, with only 24000 miles on it. I was on a trip last week which caused me to get a speeding ticket because of this. Originally it was 10 mph off, but now is reading as high as 70 mph while the vehicle is standing still. Based on other info I had read on the web, this has been a consistent problem with GMC Envoys yet no recall has been issued by gm and the cost to repair is very high ($500. 00 +). This is now a variable problem that shows my speed off as much as 80 mph and could have caused me to be traveling at excessive, unsafe speeds, if I tried to use it.

56 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2010

Defective Envoy speedometer.

57 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

My wife has a 2004 GMC Envoy, about 6:00 Mar 03 2010 she called me from her truck, saying the odometer said she was doing 95 mph when she was only doing about 55mph after I got her to calm down and pull over. She stop the truck and waited on me to get there. I notice the rpm's was stuck on 6000 the gas was on a 1/4 tank after she said she had put 40$ in the tank 30min ago plus the clock said 12:49 and it was like 7:00 after talking to a few people found out there was with the cluster. Was talking to my father who has a 05 GMC truck said there was a recall on the clusters.

58 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. While driving approximately 30 mph the speedometer stopped functioning and displayed zero. The oil gauge also stopped functioning beyond the eighty pressure mark and stayed in that position. The contact pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and checked the oil. The contact did not notice a problem. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated that the cluster panel needed to be repaired. The speedometer increased intermittently but it did not display the correct mileage. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

59 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

I have been having an intermittent issue with my speedometer not showing the correct speed for the past couple of years and has been getting worse for quite some time. It has now reached a point to where the speedometer does not work, oil pressure gauge does not work, engine light stays one and the tach only works once in a while. I actually know three people within the my place of employment that have the same vehicle ranging from a 2003 to a 2005 that have the exact same issues with their instrument panels. Of course, the dealership says that there is no recall related to this issue but they would be happy to replace the ip (almost $700) to see if that corrects the issue. I also know of a couple of different websites where you can send the panel off and they will replace all of the bulbs and motors for less $100. It is a shame that gm would charge over 7 times that amount for an issue that is this wide spread. I have driven gm model cars for over 20 years and the engines seem to be good but the interior issues are at a point that I am tired of dealing with them. I guess that it is time to look to take me business to a different car manufacturer and that is a shame.

60 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

During normal highway driving, the instrumentation panel needle gauges began to malfunction. The speedometer initially registered significantly higher than actual speeds (registered 110+ mph when traveling at ~65 mph) and then stuck at 15 mph regardless of actual speed or when at a complete stop. The tachometer also began to register higher than actual rpm, showing 6,000+ rpm even when the vehicles engine was returned to idle or turned off. Other gauge malfunctions include the oil pressure gauge which would also intermittently register higher than actual pressure. Without either a functioning speedometer or tachometer, it is very difficult to estimate actual vehicle speeds and maintain a safe driving speeds. Have contacted a local GMC dealer regarding this issue and have not yet identified a remedy.

61 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

My 2004 GMC Envoy slt cluster gauge; speedometer, gas gauge, and oil pressure gauge have stopped working.

62 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2010

Speedometer does not work accurately. Check engine light came on randomly. Is currently out and I was able to pass emissions, hopefully it will remain out. Had to replace many parts including the heater core, thermostat and coolant. Now I am experiencing a problem with the fan of the car.

63 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

Nothing descriptive led up to the failure. It happened for no reason we know. The problem is consistent and a new one started today. The problem has not been diagnosed or fixed. I found several similar issues on internet for same model and year vehicle today after being notified by wife that another area of same device has malfunctioned.

64 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2009

While driving interstate 80 in nebraska during the month of December 2009, the speedometer on my 2004 GMC Envoy got stuck on 70 mph. I had no idea how fast I was going and it was very dangerous driving while not knowing how fast I was going in construction zones and the roads were very snow and ice packed. Since December, I have purchased a gps with a speedometer. I do not want to pay to get this fixed because I feel this is a safety issue and gm should issue a recall. There are times the speedometer will work, then for no apparent reason while driving down the highway it will get stuck.

65 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

2004 GMC Envoy xuv w/76k miles; speedometer is erratic. Shows no speeds sometimes or shows slow speed sometimes or shows excessive speed sometimes. Dealer indicated GMC yukons, full size GMC pickup and Cadillac SUV's were recalled for defective speedometers. . Dealer stated not enough reported speedometer problems with Envoy xuv's to warrant a safety recall. How many defective speedometers are required to warrant a safety recall?.

66 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2009

Speedometer stuck at 120 mph even sitting still and turned off. Started a month ago and continually got worse. Now it won't move at all. Very dangerous.

67 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

Cluster panel on my 2004 GMC Envoy xuv has failed. Gm stated they are not aware of any problems with this type of car. Information on the internet has different information. I asked about this to gm and they stated they are not aware of anything being on the internet and can not be held responsible for what is on the internet.

68 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2009

I purchased a 2004 Envoy off the showroom floor. First issue was an erratic speedometer, then non-working gas gauge, now it is all gauges. I have a picture with the car in park showing 15 mph, the digital reading shows a full tank of gas but the gauge needle is below empty and also no oil pressure or temperature. The entire cluster is faulty, not just one gauge.

69 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2009

Speedometer on 2004 GMC Envoy slt quit working. I found that this is a very common problem with gm vehicles, however they have not issued a recall for it. I feel that this could be a huge safety issue and that they are aware of it but continue to ignore complaints. Knowing your speed is extremely important when driving.

70 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2009

I purchased a used 2004 GMC Envoy slt, with an extended warranty from grand prix auto group, hicksville, NY in August 2008. Soon after purchasing the car it stalled while we were at a red light. Immediately brought the truck back to the dealer and they said they fixed it, may I mention it never stopped stalling. Then the speedometer broke again. It constantly says I'm traveling 120 miles an hour. Once again, brought it back to the dealer, they tell me I need to go to a GMC dealer, I do, they replace the information cluster and speedometer, had to pay a $ 300. 00 deductible. This was in March 2009. Driving the other day October 2009 and the speedometer once again says 120. Get pulled over, get a ticket for a broken speedometer. The officer was aware I was not traveling at that speed, and even when I tried to explain, wanted to hear none of it. So now here I am again, broken speedometer, engine that stalls often and a summons to boot. I need help and I don't know where else to turn the dealerships are of no help. Jacqueline king.
