Instrument Panel problems of the 2004 GMC Envoy - part 1

121 problems related to instrument panel have been reported for the 2004 GMC Envoy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

2004 GMC Envoy xl. Consumer states recently began experiencing problems with instrumental panel. The consumer stated the gauges on the instrument panel began to malfunction one after another and ultimately all but one are no longer working. Only the temperature gauge worked.

2 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2014

The instrument panel cluster on my GMC Envoy 2004 is defective as it is on a multitude of other gm models between 2003 and 2005. One of the consequences is that the speedometer will not work or will report a faulty reading while operating the vehicle. This is an unsafe driving condition and for some reason gm has not yet issued a recall on this problem for GMC Envoys of the year 2004 even though other years of this model and other models of gm vehicles have been recalled for this exact issue. Please help gm do the right thing by it's Envoy owners. We have certainly bailed them out enough. There is another potentially deadly consequence of this issue. If one were to be driving the vehicle at 60mph using cruise control and the speedometer were to all of a sudden peg itself to 20mph, there would be a sudden and abrupt acceleration as the computer in the car attempted to regain 60mph even though the vehicle was already at that speed. Thank you for your time and attention to this dangerous speed control issue. . [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

3 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2012

Headlights stopped working, speedometer stopped working, fuel gauge stopped working, voltmeter gauge stopped working.

4 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Speedometer and tachometer quit working.

5 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2011

I was on my way to work doing 40 mph when I looked down to check my speed and the speedometer stated that I was going 70 mph and it was going higher. I begin to slow down but the speedometer would not go any less than 70 mph, even when I parked my car at my job it was still reading 70 mph.

6 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. The contact stated that the gauges on the instrument panel to include the fuel and the speedometer were not responding. The dealer diagnosed the failure and determined that the instrument cluster would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 65,300 and the current mileage was 65,600. Updated 07/12/11.

7 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

The speedometer on my 2004 Envoy xl began acting erratically ( going from 0 to 120 ) a earlier 2011 and continues. The gas gauge does not register properly either. The dealer wanted to change my speedometer first to see if this would fix both problems (over $600. 00 in cost) and if that didn't fix it, then they would have to change a module in the fuel tank (another $600. 00 in cost). My research on the internet indicates this is a faulty part and needs to be recall. I've read different makes of GMC and mileage have complained about this issue.

8 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2010

We have had numerous electrical problems with the Envoy, but I am writing about the instrument cluster panel. The failure of the panel caused the speedometer to fail. The speedometer registers over 120 mph regardless of the speed of the vehicle, or whether the vehicle is turned off or on. The mechanic who investigated the issue stated that there were numerous diagnostic errors that had to be corrected before he could successfully diagnose the bad instrument cluster. This is a known issue with the Envoy, GMC will not accept responsibility and the failed instrument panel can result in accidents.

9 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2010

Speedometer and tachometer stopped working properly. These gauges do not reflect the speed of the vehicle properly. I. E. I am traveling 25mph and the gauge reads 100mph.

10 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2010

Erratic speed odometer readings, happens 3-4 times weekly. This happens from your actual speed of 40-60 mph, you look down next second and you are going 100-120 mph per odometer. When you come to a stop it says your still going 90-110 mph, only way to reset your odometer is to pull over and restart your car about 50-60 times until it says 0 mph. Sometimes this wont last but 5 min. . . This also increases your cars mileage. GMC will not repair this with out charging you 600 dollars. This is not safe for anyone on the road and not fair to people owing cars, or buying cars to have not actual mileage on a car nor to be able to drive safely. Updated ivoq 12/03/10.

11 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2010

The speedometer on my 2004 GMC Envoy xuv intermittently works. Roughly 10% of the time, the gauge will stop working completely. Now, the rpm gauge has also begin acting erratically. I have contacted GMC customer support, and they directed me to the local dealer, who will charge me $79 simply to "diagnose" the problem, followed by a likely $600 repair to replace the entire cluster. A simple online search of "2004 GMC Envoy xuv speedometer problems" returned 10's of thousands of hits, so it appears this is a very widespread problem. After checking into the situation with gm dealers there is a recall on the sierra's and yukons which have the same cluster as my vehicle but gm refuses to stand behind the defect on the Envoys. Parts have not been replaced yet on my vehicle hoping that gm will wake up and realize this is a common problem on the Envoys and that it requires attention. . Read more...

12 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2010

My 2004 GMC Envoy speedometer does not work. Gage shows driving 120 mph when driving in the city. Gets stuck on numbers and stays there for days at a time.

13 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2010

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. While traveling at 45 mph, the speedometer failed and would not read the contact's traveled speed. The vehicle was not diagnosed and there were no prior warnings. The failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 110,000.

14 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

Speedometer says I am going 70 - 110 when I am driving 30 ish and sometimes goes to zero. When I am stopped, it will show that I am going speeds (various). My lights on dashboard dims once in awhile.

15 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

Faulty dash cluster/speedometer. Will read 120 mph when you are sitting still.

16 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2010

Hi, I'm a owner of a GMC Envoy xl. I have had many problems with the gauges altogether. 1st it was the fuel gauge and then now all the instruments are out. You cant tell how fast your going, if your vehicle is overheating nothing! I have done quiet a bit of research and it looks as if this is a very known issue. Its not that its the most costly part to fix but I dont feel the consumer should be responsible if ust about everyone that owns this type of vehicle has the same issue. Its also very dangerous not knowing what is going on while your on the road as well thats what the gauges are for. Please help!!!! the approx date entered is the date I filed this complaint I have had the issue for well over 6 months now.

17 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2010

For the last few months the check engine light would come on and go off after a few days; we took it to our mechanic who ran a diagnostic and they said there is nothing wrong, probably a faulty sensor, not harmful. So, last night while driving, using cruise control and on the interstate my speedometer stopped working. When I came to a stop at an exit I noticed the speedometer was reading 42 mph but I was at a complete stop. I do not even want to imagine what might have happened should it have begun to work while I was doing 60+mph while on cruise control!!! this is extremely dangerous! so I came home and did some research to see if this is a known issue with my 2004 GMC Envoy xl and low and behold this is an issue to all GMC suvs from 2002-2005! I am disgusted at the information I found that states GMC isn't willing to take ownership of the recall/repair when this is already a known issue!! please act on this with due diligence and recall this faulty instrument panel before someone gets hurt or worse!!!!.

18 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2009

Speedometer started acting inconsistent and then "fixed" itself the last week of December 2009. At that time it would not drop below 20mph. After seemingly being ok, the first week of Jan. 2010, the speedometer jumped to 80mph and hung there and pegged out at 120mph when driven. I made appt. With gmac in winston salem, nc and was told the entire instrument cluster would have to be replaced @ $600+. Panel has been ordered and to be installed end of week. Now I see that there has been a letter sent out by gmac that I never received, to replace this cluster if less than 70,000 miles. I now have a little less than 73,000 miles. Apparently this has been a major problem???.

19 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2009

In December 2009 my 2004 Envoy xl's tachometer went off line. It starts at about the 3 o'clock position. Then a month later the odometer stuck at about 40 miles per hour even though I was stopped or obviously doing over 40. When the vehicle is turned off and restarted it corrected itself but was erratic and would tick its way up to about 40-50mph then would stop going up. This has been an ongoing problem with many 2004 Envoys. The dealer said it was a instrument panel problem and that they would have to replace it at a cost of around $500. 00 this is a serious safety problem. When reducing speed to accommodate a curve that recommends a reduced speed I can not tell what my actual speed is to safely make the curve. Speed limits are posted for safety reasons and if we cant tell how fast we are going do to a faulty instrument panels it puts people in danger. Dealers and GMC seem to know about it and have not yet recalled the vehicles to correct the safety problem not to mention that $500. 00 is a lot of money for most people to have to pay for a safety problem that the manufacture should be fixing.

20 Instrument Panel problem

21 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2009

Instrument panel cluster issues in 2004 GMC Envoy,. Headlights and instrument panel lights flicker dim to bright. Occurs while driving down the road very sporadic. Diagnostic stated faulty instrument panel cluster. Issue if not fixed, the vehicle could stall when driving and lose power. Mine has started loosing power and stalling. Faulty speedometer inaccurate, will go past 120mph or stay on zero, why no recall on these items gm is aware of this but as of today no action has been taken.

22 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

The cluster gauge on my 2004 GMC Envoy has gone completely out. I did some research online and have found this is a major issue with all Envoys made during 2004/2005 yet to recall has been issued. At first it was sporadic but eventually, all of the gauges went completely out.

23 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. The speedometer read 35 mph while driving at 70 mph. The vehicle was taken to a local garage. Diagnostic testing located failure at the transmission shifter cable, which was replaced. Other unknown parts were also replaced. The instrumental control panel sensor was replaced, but the failure was not corrected, the transmission failed again. The manufacturer took a report, but they would not assist with the repair. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 93,000.

24 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

2004 GMC Envoy xl speedometer and tachometer no longer function. . . . This happen about 1 year ago and it continues to this day. . . I am reading online that there are other similar issues with the instrument panel. In my opinion this is without a doubt a safety related issue. . . . I should be traveling 35 miles an hour and the car registers 75 mph. Its never correct and the tach just stopped working.

25 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2009

My 2004 GMC Envoy speedometer stopped working properly. There was no fore-warning. If I'm on the highway going 60 mph, it reads I'm goin 25 mph. The needle falls below "0" when idling. I've called a GMC dealer and they said there is no recall for this although I've read many exact complaints online.

26 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. The contact stated that the speedometer and fuel gauge became inoperable. The dealer estimated that the repair would cost $500 at the contact's expense. On a separate occasion, the vehicle would only shift into first and second gear and would not accelerate over 35 mph. In addition, the rpms would rev higher than normal and the vehicle would hesitate when attempting to pick up speed. The contact heard a loud humming noise under the hood when attempting to accelerate. The dealer stated that a new transmission was needed. The repair would cost over $2,000. An independent mechanic stated that he could rebuild the transmission. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 44,386 updated 07/28/09 the transmission failed at 58,000 miles. Updated 07/31/09.

27 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2009

Erratic speedometer operation. Shows various speeds when stopped. Inaccurate when underway. Will show up to 110 mph driving in the city. Dealer says instrument panel needs to be repaired at cost of over $400. Same problems on full size gm trucks. Full size trucks are being covered under service bulletin #07187a, b, & now c. Speedometer repair shop says stepper motors are bad. Same part number and repair as on full size trucks. Gm has excluded Envoy and trailblazer from this repair coverage.

28 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2009

Speedometer does not work at times. Sometimes it will just stay at "0", others it will be at various speeds even while in park.

29 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2009

My speedometer does not work in mt 2004 GMC Envoy. I understand that some of the GMC pickups had the same problem and it was handled as a recall. When it began, it would hang up at a range between 60-90 mph. It now just sits at 0. I have been stopped for speeding in local neighborhoods in massachusetts, where I work for going anywhere between 5-15 mph over the speed limit. This has cost me money in fines and my auto insurance, it should be handled as a recall, GMC needs to step up to the plate. I inquired with my mechanic, and its about a $900. 00 fix for me to repair!.

30 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2009

Speedometer started showing I was going 90-130mph when I was on probably moving 50mph. It was about 30-50mph off. When car is off speedometer shows 50mph. Found out you can make speedometer drop 5mph at a time if you turn the car on & off about 20 times it will eventually go to zero mph. After a few days it does the same erratic behavior. I have read over hundreds of post online about this on this make and model alone and think this is a very big safety concern. I need help and need my car fixed please help.

31 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2009

In the spring of 2009, we began noticing problems with the instrument panel and electrical system of our 2004 GMC Envoy xl. The speedometer was not consistent. The gas gauge became unreliable. We have also seen problems with the oil gauge and most recently the reading for the exterior temperature. Currently, it has been almost a year since the start of the problems, and the gas gauge, speedometer, and the exterior temperature readout are never correct. We contacted the GMC dealer where we bought the vehicle and were told that several complaints had been logged regarding similar issues with these vehicles and that the problem was the instrument panel cluster. I believe the cost to have it fixed was going to be $400-$500. If so many of these vehicles are having the same problem, why will GMC not issue a recall and have this problem fixed?.

32 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2009

I own a 2004 GMC Envoy and the speedometer has stopped working correctly. It is very erratic and goes anywhere between 10-100 miles over the speed I am traveling. I've been stopped twice for speeding and received a fine for $170. 00. Gms states it is not a safety issue, I disagree! when I was stopped I tried explaining to the police officer what was wrong, however he didn't want to her it.

33 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy xl. The contact stated that the instrument panel was inoperable and worked intermittently.
