36 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2009

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. The contact observed while driving the speedometer displayed an inaccurate reading regardless of the speed being traveled. In addition, there was a malfunction with the headlights remaining "on" when deactivated. The failure occurred intermittent. The fan clutch failed unexpectedly. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. The fan clutch was replaced. The contact had concern of the safety risk involved. The failure mileage was 50,000. The current mileage was 57,000.

37 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2009

The tachometer would quit working but it happened only a couple of times in Jan 2008 & again in June 2008 and when we turned the car off and started it the next time it seemed to be fine as if it needed reset. In Jan of 2009 the speedometer began to fail at first occasionally then all the time at the same time the tachometer sporadically failed. So we took it to the dealership and had them replace the instrument cluster in the dash (they kept the old part) and gm refused to help with the problem sitting the mileage on the vehicle at the time of the repair.

38 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2009

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. The contact stated that the speedometer suddenly stopped working. She called the dealer and was informed that the instrument cluster needed to be repaired. The dealer also stated that they would not be responsible for the repairs. Through online research, the contact discovered that numerous people were experiencing the same failure. The vehicle has not yet been repaired; however, the contact believes that the failure was due to a manufacturer defect and a recall should be issued. She is unable to determine how fast she is driving. The failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 84,000.

39 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2009

The speedometer quit working correctly, when I first noticed it my speedometer said I was going 120mph and I was in town in a 35mph zone. I had my gps device on and it showed that I was actually going 35mph. After stopping at a stop light the speedometer stated that I was still traveling at a speed of 75 mph, and that was incorrect because I was sitting still at the light. Also, after turning off the vehicle it still registered a rate of speed of 75 mph. There are some days that the speedometer works for a while and then it goes crazy. Another example, it sometimes shows that I am going at a rate of speed of 0 mph and I know that I am at least going 55 mph. This is completely unsafe. Upon contacting the gm service center they stated they thought it might be the instrument cluster needing replaced, but if that would be the case the other gauges would not work properly. So far the only thing that is messed up is the speedometer. I have not been able to correct the failure as the service center told me over the phone that it would cost me around $300. 00 or more and they want to replace the entire instrument panel, which in my opinion does not need replaced. . . . Only the speedometer needs replaced/repaired.

40 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2009

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy xuv. The contact cannot determine how fast she is driving on the freeway. The speedometer does not work correctly when there is a half a tank or less of fuel in the vehicle. GMC stated that there was no recall for her vehicle. The failure mileage was 80,000. Updated 3/19/09 updated 03/23/09.

41 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2009

Erratic speedometer operation, we took it in to in to be checked and they said it needed a new cluster, also while it was there I had them check the 4wd service light which came on erratically and they said it also needed a new module. This is for a 2004 GMC Envoy with 64,984 miles. No extended warranty so we had to pay for the all the work done. The day I had it checked out the service rep did say there were problems with a certain year and if we had the right year and vehicle and if it was under 70,000 miles they would replace it for free. When we came back a couple days later to have the work done he said after I asked him it was for a silverado not sure if he said 2003 or 2004 but not for our vehicle. . . . . I am very disappointed after 40 years of buying gm vehicles that gm didn't take care or help take care of the cost of these problems.

42 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2008

Problem started out as erratic reading with speedometer. After approx. 5 days speedo finally wouldn't register at all took vehicle to authorized dealer to be repaired - $555. 00 charge to replace instrument panel and reprogram. Called gm for financial help as I noticed there were alot of failures with GMC SUV's and pick-up trucks. Gm would not acknowledge there was a problem which I feel is totally disingenuous. Speedometer is necessary to be working as a safety issue. Because I was out of state at the time of part breakdown I felt I had no choice but to have problem fixed before my return trip home (1250 miles). Judging how many other Envoys have had same problem, I feel gm is dodging their responsibility I noticed that there has been class-actions against them for the same problem.

43 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2008

The speedometer needle broke and gave wrong reading. Had to replace ip cluster.

44 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2008

My rpm gauge is not working. My speedometer works when using in stop and go mode or city driving. But when I am on a trip my speedometer will quit working accurately. It will reflect a much lower speed than I am going. My cruise control is often engaged when the speedometer stops working. But the rpm gauge no longer works at any time. I talked to someone at the Chevrolet dealership and they said that the symptoms that I describe are very similar to the 2003/04 chevys that do have a recall. I have not taken any steps yet to fix. I was told that it would be $95 for a diagnostic service and that most likely it would cost $550 to fix (based on what they know about the chevys that are on recall).

45 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2008

Speedometer failed. At first it did not correctly reflect vehicle speed, then fluctuated rapidly over the course of several days, and finally failed completely.

46 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2008

2004 Envoy, speedometer quit working. Showed 60mph when idling or stopped.

47 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2008

2004 GMC Envoy instrument panel cluster suddenly started not working. It hasn't worked properly since it happened and reads incorrect speed, oil pressure, and fuel levels. Nothing has been done to correct the failure by the dealer.

48 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2008

Approximately 1 1/2 months ago my speedometer went out on my GMC 2004 Envoy. I went to the dealership and the person helping me said that they get alot of repair requests for the speedometers going out on the GMC's. So I stated if this is an often occurrence it appears to me that it should be a national recall being that this seems to occur alot. When I got home I went on line to pull the reviews and to see what others were talking about. That is when I noticed that a I was not the only customer with this problem. Also, when I went onto my iphone application to see if I could find anything that could assist me being that I was going out of town I found an application and one of the people posting a review was a guy who was out of town and his speedometer went out and he too was able to find the same speedometer that I had to use in order for him to get back to where he was going. As a customer I feel that if this is a problem that is occurring at the 35,000-45,000 mark of these vehicles then it should be the responsibility of the manufacturer to make good on this malfunction. My car is not quite 5 years and I only have approximately 42,500 miles on my truck.

49 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2008

The speedometer on my Envoy xuv jumped from 75mph to 120moh as I slowed down to exit the interstate. It continued to increase, although it was past the point of registering any speed. It has lowered some, but is still acting erratically. This vehicle is only 4 years old, and I'm looking at a $500+ repair.

50 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2008

Faulty tach and speedometer on my 2004 GMC Envoy xl. I have no way of knowing my actual driving speed. Sitting still it will show 100+ mph. I traveled down an off ramp today doing 120 mph. My wife can't handle the vehicle any more. My local GMC dealer wants $500 to fix it. He stated many 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 gm vehicle have the same problem. Gm needs to step up and fix this. This is very unsafe. I nearly received a speeding ticket and the cop did not believe me when I told him my speedometer said I was only doing 60.

51 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2008

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. While driving approximately 45 mph, the speedometer displayed an inaccurate reading regardless of the speed being traveled. In addition, the fuel gauge indicator displayed " empty fuel" regardless of how much fuel was in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. The technician recommended that the vehicle be taken to an authorized dealer to be repaired. The vehicle has not been repaired at this time. The failure mileage was 40,000. The current mileage was 78,000. The VIN was unavailable.

52 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2008

My car's speedometer started to give me the wrong speed and eventually just quit and is now stuck on 0. A little while after, the radiator gauge does not work either. It seems that the instrument cluster is slowing going out. We haven't fixed the instrument cluster yet because we have been trying to talk with the dealer and GMC about the problem, but they refused to fix it because we were just one person.

53 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

The speedometer in my 2004 GMC Envoy xuv at unpredictable times will display speeds less than my actual speed. This creates an unsafe situation where I cannot ensure that I am driving within posted speed limits.

54 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2008

The speedometer has a malfunction that will make the speedometer read very erratic, at a steady speed the speedometer has been all the way over to the 120 mph and on other days it will stay a zero. This problem occurs frequently, not everyday but I would say atleast once every 2 weeks. I believe there could be grave consequences. , you have absolutely no idea how fast or slow you are actually going, especially if there are no cars traveling the same direction as you. I will attempt to repair this item myself since the dealer says it can cost $300-$700 to fix.

55 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

I began experiencing problems with the instrument panel on my 2004 GMC Envoy a few months ago. The entire panel would go out and all the gauges bottomed out. I could not tell my speed, gas level, rpms, etc. The panel would stay out for a few days then return to normal. Also on occasion the speedometer would stick at 60 mph and only correct itself if I pulled over and turned the truck off then back on. Finally, about two weeks ago the entire instrument panel went out and has never come back on. I have dropped it off at the dealership for service and am awaiting their response. This problem has caused me to run out of gas twice because I was unable to judge my fuel level. Luckily both times I was in an area with easy access to the shoulder of the road. I currently have approximately 55,000 miles on my truck. (I can't be sure of this, however, since the odometer is a part of the panel that is out. ) this is a serious and, according to my research, recurring problem the GMC should be forced to correct and pay for.

56 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2008

The tachometer and speedometer do not work. While driving to work in a construction zone, my speedometer began malfunctioning. While traveling with other commuters, my speedometer read that I was traveling 85 mph. The tachometer has been out for several months. After calling the dealership, they informed me that this is common in my vehicle.

57 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2008

Speedometer quit working properly on Friday, July 11. By Monday morning, it was back to normal.

58 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

Erratic speedometer on 2004 GMC Envoy xuv shows various speeds from zero to 120+ mph while driving at normal road speeds. Need to use tachometer to determine approximate speed of vehicle (2000 rpm = 65 mph for this vehicle). When ignition is turned off the speedometer needle does not always return to zero, the speedometer needle also shutters a little intermittently when reducing speed.

59 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2008

2004 GMC Envoy xuv: the speedometor failed last year, and probably wasn't working properly before that. I see that a number of other people are having the same problems with their GMC's.

60 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Speedometer does not work and dealer won't cover under warranty. Seems to be a big problem with GMC vehicles.

61 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Speedometer started sticking, when turned off and back on would correct this for a short time. After a while speedometer showed I was going 90 mph. Since this, my speedometer completely stopped. (although, yesterday when I looked at my speedometer it did show 50 mph then went back to zero) I was also told this was a faulty stepper motor. I don't feel that I should pay $250 to have a $25 motor installed when this is obviously a manufacturing defect.

62 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2008

The fuel gauge on my 2004 GMC Envoy is not working.

63 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2008

My speedometer gets stuck and does not function at times. Although no harm has been caused, it is a concern that I've seen many others file complaints on.

64 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2008

2004 Envoy - instrument cluster.

65 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2008

I bought my new vehicle last week and discovered after taking possession of it that the speedometer ramps up but does not go down. As it is parked it reads between 38 and 120+. Dealers say since there is no recall they cannot help me and have quoted between a 500 dollar and 1,000 dollar fix.

66 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2008

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy. While driving 40 mph, the speedometer sporadically failed and displayed inaccurate readings. The contact is in the process of having the vehicle inspected. He called the manufacturer and is awaiting their response. The powertrain was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 26,500.

67 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2008

The speedometer sticks and gives the wrong speed about 2x a month, on average. The dealer will not replace and denies there is a problem.

68 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2008

1. No event. Just driving 2. Speedometer failure. 0 at normal driving speeds 3. Not corrected.

69 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2008

Speedometer on 2004 GMC envory started acting up and would read twice the actual speed of vehicle. Then it froze at 80 mph. It stills is not working. It jumps around all the time now.

70 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2008

The headlights and dashlights flicker from bright to dim while driving and when braking. It's a dangerous situation to have other drivers as well as myself distracted by the constant flickering, but research seems to indicate that there is no fix for the problem and an overall lack of concern from GMC.
