GMC Jimmy owners have reported 21 problems related to brake disc rotor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Rough braking that became worse to the point where vehicle control was questionable. GMC dealer advised that rotors on all 4 wheels needed to be replaced. Inspection of rotors indicated that significant amounts of metal had broken away from the brake pad contact area on the rotors. This caused the brake pads to then be applied over a washboard type surface which almost eliminated functionality. All pads and rotors were replaced on this GMC Jimmy vehicle which only has 38,000 miles. Dealer retained parts and billed $725.

There are several recalls out on my model of vehicle in which my vehicle has the same symptoms but when I run a check on the year VIN it comes back with no recalls. How can I make sure that my repairs should be covered under the recalls.

This vehicle at 11,000 miles one year ago went for state inspection and the rotors were so rusted that they could not be refaced so they were replaced under the general vehicle 3 yr 30,000 mile warranty. Then today at 27140 miles during state inspection the rotors were once again rusted so badly that they required replacement. Failure of these items could cause failure of braking system. Explanation from dealer without any testing was that this was due to the road salt. None of my other gm vehicles ( 1991 Jimmy with 169,000 miles, and a 1996 grand am with 159,000 miles) exhibit this symptom even though they are used on the on the same roads. There must be a problem with the specification for the metal in these rotors. This improper specification may lead to possible cracking of these rotors. I am requesting the old parts from the repair shop so that gm may inspect them. Being a quality engineer I know that gm will want these back to perform metallurgical analysis on the rotors and find the root cause of the rust.
I have had to replace the brakes on my 1997 GMC Jimmy twice in 25,000 miles. My daughter and son-in-law also have gm products (trailblazer and truck) and have had premature brake wear and freeze-up.

1st 3 time now my check engine light went on for the samr thing secondary air injector system malfunction. It was just a bad sensor its still doing it. They want 140. Just for parts to fix it. 2nd I spent about 1000. 00 to fix frount brakes rotors pads andwheel berrings. The owner of the garage said that he fixed about 50 of these a year my SUV was only 2 at the time 3rdi also spent almost 3000. 00 on a tranny last year because I lost all gears I only had drive. I had recomened the GMC Jimmy to at least 8 to 10 friends 7 bought them 5 have had the same problems as I have with tranny and brakes now my brakes are squeeking frount and back not grinding nothing wrong with back brakes ever had them checked they said they are fine. But very squeeky that is very annoying. When we lost reverce we was backing up and if the car behind us didnt back up we would have hit him. I thought I woul let you know some of the things that have been happing to myself and friends the last thing we fixed was the tranny.

Pulled out of parking lot on to road. Applied brakes while approaching a light. Even with both feet on the brake pedal the 1996 GMC Jimmy barely came to a stop from a distance of 6 car lengths going 30 mph. Narrowly avoided rear-ending vehicle in front of me. This was not the first time but the closet encounter. Before this incident I had the front rotors, disk pads, calipers, front flex lines, booster, vacumm hose and connector on engine to booster, master cyl. , and rear brake linings - replaced. Since then I had the vacumm checked from the engine to the booster and was told the booster was bad. I had the booster and masterc replaced again. Still no change. Pedal goes too far down and feels like it hits a brick followed by very weak breaking action.

Upon hearing the wear indicator on front brakes of my 2000 GMC Jimmy with 24000+ miles on it, I took it in for repair expecting only pad replacement and maybe machining of the rotors. As it turned out, all 4 rotors needed replacement due to large areas of deep corrosion that, according to the repair shop, was severe enough to affect braking, and thus, pad wear, leading to premature failure of these critical components. An attempt was made to machine one rotor to get past the corrosion, but the corrosion was too deep and would leave the rotor too thin. The repair shop is beginning to see this problem on late model gm vehicles, and as such, provided me with all the parts that were replaced (4 rotors and all pads) as well as an itemized list of new parts used in anticipation of some sort of follow-up action from gm or the government.
Sometimes when applying brakes I heard a noise. Took vehicle to dealer and was informed that I needed new front and rear brakes. In addition, rear rotors were so coroded that they where not resurfacable and needed to be replaced. Total charge $1000. Why would rear rotors corode so severely after only 46,900 miles and 3. 25 years of driving?.
Upon investigation of brake noise repair shop determined that all four brake rotors where corroded to the point of breakage. Vehicle has 41,000 miles.

When applying brakes there was pulsating and noise, dealer determined rotors had to be replaced, they were disintegrated. Could not be turned, all 4 rotors were replaced.
Head lights and air conditioner blower come on when motor was not running. Took vehicle to dealer twice, dealer couldn't find cause. Also, driver's, passenger's, and backseat squeaked/air conditioner had mildew in evaporator case, and warpped brake rotors. Consumer trying to return vehicle to GMC.
The brakes pulsate from delaminating rust on both front rotors, both front rotors were replaced (6-22-00)but the problem reappeared, the second time all rotors and pads were replaced (11-6-00). Nlm.
Consumer purchased vehicle last year and was hearing a squeaking noise. Took vehicle to the dealership, and they told consumer that the rotors were defective. Rotors were cracked and were replaced.
Front brakes, rotors and wheel bearings failed.
Warpd front brake rotors.
Front brake rotors replaced.
Brakes make excessive grinding, squealing noise and needed to be replaced before 20000 miles.
Brake rotors failed twice.
