This may not be a huge complaint or important. Nonetheless, I own a 1998 GMC Jimmy. I read the description of what happens with the antilock brake system. That is exactly what is happening with my truck. My question is, how can I get my truck looked at or fixed without any cost to me?.

1999 GMC Jimmy exhibits exactly the same automatic braking system defect as NHTSA campaign id number: 05v379000, mfg's report date: Aug 29,2005. My VIN number (1gkct18w4xk501155) currently not covered. Vehicle abs system activates at low speed on dry pavement causing increased stopping distances. Abs system often engages even though my foot is not on the brake pedal. Has almost caused numerous accidents. Am having vehicle repaired at my own expense tomorrow due to extreme safety factor.

The contact stated abs brakes were doing the exact same thing as mentioned in recall 05v379000. While driving 10 mph the abs kicked in, causing a delay in stopping. She noticed that this happened about one month ago. It was random , but now every time she goes 10 mph or below and stops the abs kick in.
: the contact stated while driving at low speeds coming to a stop, the antilock brakes engaged making the vehicle difficult to stop. The dealership and manufacturer was notified however, no repairs were made. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop for inspection. Upon inspection, the mechanic took out the fuse to the antilock brakes.
I was involved in a crash in June. A vehicle stopped in front of me and I struck the rear of that vehicle. The road was wet from rain. My brakes, all four wheels, locked up and I slid into that vehicle. No injuries. Property damage probably $4,000. Total brake lockup. Had anti lock brakes worked properly I believe I would have plenty of room to stop and avoid crash.

I am having a problem with my anti-lock brake system. I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy and any time that I apply brakes and there is a difference in road conditions (pavement to gravel) while applying brakes there is always an extended stopping distance and no control. We have pine needles that gather on the side of our small road, making small mounds. If I apply my brakes while going across these the car will not stop. It makes a "pong" sound a couple of times, then it will finally stop. Luckily there has been no oncoming traffic. This has been happening every since I have had the vehicle. I have contacted a Chevrolet dealer in the past and they informed me there was no recalls on vehicle.

There is a recall regarding the abs system (and increased stopping distance) for the 4-wheel drive 1996 GMC Jimmy SUV. I am having the same problem with my 2-wheel drive Jimmy, but there is no recall on it.
When braking from any speed the vehicle started to shake/vibrate. The consumer was told that the rotors are rusted. Vehicle was repaired and consumer dissatisfied with price of service.
On Wednesday June 23, 2004, I went to red holman pontiac to replace a hub and bearing assembly on the front left wheel of my GMC Jimmy 2000. A grinding and metallic noise was coming from the front of the vehicle and I had to have done at the dealer. Two years ago, this same hub and bearing assembly was replaced at 48000 miles. Now, this vehicle has 75000 miles and I have to replace the right hub and bearing assembly. This means that this part only lasted 48000 miles and the replacement part less than 27000 miles. On both instances, there was also a failure of the abs brake system. I have owned over the years more than 11 gm cars with various mileages at trading time and I never had to replace a bearing. When the first replacement assembly was put in, the dealer told me that it was a hazard and for the other wheel, the dealer acknowledged the fact that it is a safety hazard on my invoice if these parts pose a threat to the safety of GMC owners, why is GMC installing parts with material defects? I was also informed that the replacement part carries only a 12000 miles warranty and the price is about $460 and labor $124. 00. Luckily, the first repair was under warranty, but this time I had to negotiate with the dealer and I had to pay $284. 00. I believe that these parts should last longer since there is neither maintenance nor any facility to disassemble the unit. I see no fault with the dealer; rather I see a manufacturer defective product. This repair should have been the GMC responsibility due to the short life span of this product. Sincerely, claude durand.
The contact states the abs engaged at low speeds. Causing extended stopping distances during low-speed braking applications. The vehicle has been to a repair shop once for inspection. Although an abs problem was recognized no repairs were made. The contact experienced this problem for the past year and a half.
Front suspension on GMC Jimmy. Wheel bearings, upper and lower ball joints, spo drive shaft all within 1 months time, and still not right continual repairs since puchase in 2001. . . Cruise control, multi function switch, brake rotors, abs problems. . . . Nickel and dimed me to death.
The anti-lock brakes activated without warning, which caused the consumer to lose control of the steering, and then the engine stopped.

On 30 Dec 2001 while driving 30-35 mph consumer applied brakes, pedal felt normal, no braking action. Consumer was able to stop safely. Consumer noticed on braking there was an electrical noise. . Consumer stated when attempting to make a right turn and applied the brake the vehicle felt like it was on ice.

Ignition switch: gauges went to zero, all idiot lights came on, car would not accelerate pulling into traffic on busy highway, narrowly escaped accident when gauges came back on, idiot lights went out, and engine accelerated normally. Did this again in our driveway twice the next week. Took to dealer, mack brown inc. , in boone, nc, not the selling dealer, car was under warranty at the time. They kept it several days and called to say it was fixed. When went to pick up vehicle, I asked what they had replaced, and they admitted they had done nothing, and said the diagnosis computer showed so many potential problems they didn't know what to replace first. I told them to keep it until it was fixed, that I wasn't putting my kids in it until it was fixed, and got in my older and higher mileage mercedes which has never had a single problem, and left. They kept it a couple more days and decided to replace the ignition switch, which they said had caused similar symptoms in many full size gm pickups they had seen, but they had never seen a Jimmy with the problem. They said the ignition switch in both models was the same part, though. The car has never had the problem since. Unrelated brake problem, brake pedal would suddenly be hard, as if with no power assist. Back to mack brown, inc. , who diagnosed it as a clogged pcv valve. Problem has not recurred. Also, for a year the emergency brake will not hold the vehicle on even the slightest incline, despite mack brown, inc. And two independent garages adjusting it on three different occasions.
This has bee an ongoing problem with dealership and there service department I have also contacted GMC about this . If someone could help me out. I would like to speek to someone to find out what I can do please call me at work 989-793-5900 or home 989-893-4354 so I could explain all of the problems we have had thank you. I would like to suggest that the entire 1996 GMC- Jimmy series made need to be recalled because the owner has to many repairs to be done on the vehicle. The services engine light comes very often to indicate repairs on the truck and their are to be problems with this 1996 Jimmy. I suggest a total recall of this vehicle and this vehicle is unsafe to be on the road. It has a very bad braking system abs.
Consumer was traveling 30-35mph, applying brakes and brake pedal went straight to the floor. Consumer tried to stop by pumping brakes & finally they caught. This was the first experience. Dealer was inspecting vehicle.
Faulty brakes caused consumer vehicle to rear end another vehicle, consumer believes this failure is related to a recalled transfer case selector switch which may send an incorrect signal to the abs module thus resulting in longer stopping distance. Nlm.
While trying to slow down at an intersection vehicle perceeded into the intersection.
Recall 99v193000/abs. Recall notice was received after an accident. While traveling at highway speed of 60 mph applied brakes in an emergency situation due to another vehicle pulling in front, as applying brakes, vehicle continued on, even after pumping brakes three times. Vehicle continued until hitting other vehicle's rear bumper. Upon impact, driver's air bag did not deploy. Dealer/manufacturer were not conacted at this time. Please feel free to provide any further details.
When applying brakes, abs would engage intermittently and cause front wheel to grab, and brake pedal would go to the floor. This problem caused vehicle to continue on before stopping. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide further details.
I applied my brakes as I was coming up to an intersection. The abs engaged and the pedal was thrown to the floorboard the front tires then locked up and I skidded into the intersection. This was the second time this had happened. Contacted GMC and was told there was not much I could do except get a new system.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Abs problems: during normal braking vehicle did not stop properly, which could cause a crash. This happened on dry or wet pavement. This problem has been reported to GMC. Owner was told that there were no recalls on the truck for this reason. Problem has not been corrected. Please list any other concerns.
While driving at any speed and stepping on brake pedal to stop, there will be extended stopping distance without prior warning.
Vehicle was experiencing the same problems as enumerated in manufacturer's recall 9332. Vehicle malfunctioned, causing extended stopping distance during stops. Vehicle has been taken to the dealer, but dealer refused to do recall repairs since this particular vehicle was not included in recal 9332 due to VIN. The effect could cause consumer to be involved in an automobile accident w/o prior warning. Extended stopping distance occurs on occassion when brakes are slammed on.
