GMC Sierra owners have reported 8 problems related to diesel engine (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Coolant light continues to come on. I've had it to the shop and they say that it is a manufacturing problem. However they are not willing to fix it. I have the same problem on my chevy high country that has the same 6. 6 diesel engine in it. The mechanics all acknowledge that this is a problem for all of these model 6. 6 diesel regardless of whether it is GMC or chevy. This should definitely be a recall. The warning light continually comes up on the display saying I am low on fluid. However, when I check it it is always full. There is a high chance that if it is low I will automatically reset it thinking that the warning light is not functioning correctly. Again, the gm text knows that this is a problem throughout the fleet. Again, this should be a recall. If you have further questions you can reach me at 308-940-1071 thank you for your time, wayne williams.

I own a 2003 GMC Sierra with a diesel engine. I have had to replace the block heater 5x in the last 3 years. It quits about every 4 months during the "winter months" or the first time I plug it in after the summer it fails to work.

Overheating of 2005 GMC duramax diesel engine while pulling small 5th wheel in mountains of colorado. This caused me to have to slow down to the point where I was a hazard to myself and others on the highways because of my vehicle causing a traffic obstruction.

The injectors on my 2004 GMC Sierra went out at 26,000 miles. The incident caused me to lose my truck for 4 days. The dealership replaced all 8 injectors.
2004 GMC 2500hd duramax - purchased March 2004. Severe, abrupt 'clacking/chatter' coupled with brief, complete loss of power and billows of smoke. Has occurred 4 times: 3/28 1660 miles @ 67mph, 5/5 2167 miles @ 70 mph, 5/8 2316 miles @ 60-65 mph, 5/8 2325 miles @ 60-65 mph.
When the air conditioner (a/c) is used it takes at least eight minutes for the cool air to flow. There is a foul odor coming from the vents that smells like rotten eggs. Also, consumer is concerned with the sound of the engine. Although the vehicle is equipped with a gas engine, it sounds like a diesel engine. There is a irritating noise that occurs intermittently at any speed. The dealer claims that the noise is normal. Engine burns 3 qts. Of oil every 3000 miles and the fuel gauge isn't accurate.
