Hard knock of engine on startup, worse in colder weather, lasting a couple of minutes. At 42,000 miles truck needed a new transmission and at 66,151 miles truck needed a new motor.
Engine knock at start up for approx 10-30 seconds.
Problem only occures when engine and transmission are completly warmed and transmission is in overdrive mode. If transmission is in drive "3" no problems occur at any engine speed. Dealer states on repair order, "normal condition at this time until an update comes out". Suggestion was made by dealer that this could be caused by tourque converter.

The consumer had the first oil change at 3500 miles and ever since then has had to add 1 quart of oil every 2 weeks, the vehicle is currently at the dealer .
There is and has been an engine knock since 7/2000, has been in shop 6 times for same problem, GMC contends carbon knock, getting worse. Idles rough, told by dealer and GMC it is a characteristic of vehicle. GMC says they will continue to hornor warranty. What happens when warranty exprires, and the piston comes through the block. Drivetrain hestiates when in gear.
This problem occured first in October 1998 and courtesy pontiac, where the vehicle was purchased did not find the problem! last week upon returning from new mexico the engine lost power in missouri and I stopped at a gasstation and found that there was no coolant in the tank. This was refilled and one exit further the oil was checked after the problem did not appear to be corrected. This time no oil was in the engine. Before the travel a GMC dealer in shelbyville ky did the maintenance on it, filling 5 quarts of oil in!.

At various speeds the engine will cut off without warning. Dealer can't find the problem.
Engine knocks loudly at start-up and last for aprox. 2 minutes - dealer said this is a normal occurrence. The engine also has spark knock when accelerating and dealer also says this is normal - dealer said this is due to carbon build up on ring lands and could be temporarily repaired but would re-occur within 10,ooo miles. This problem started at 15,000 miles and continues to date. I cannot solve the problem with any type of additive advised by the dealer. Dealer said GMC has a defective engine and I have to live with it. They told me even if they replaced the motor I would have the same problem with the knocking and pinging on accelleration. The dealer contacted GMC technical advisor dan pratner case # 3970330 and he advised them this was normal for this engine. I find it hard to believe a person can purchase a vehicle with a defective engine and be told this is normal. The public needs to know before they buy this particular product so they do not end up with a defective product that will cause them additional maintenance costs and a very low resale value not to speak of the embarrassment of having a vehicle that knocks loudly on cold start-up. I do not know what the long term effects of this engine knocking will do. If you do investigate this problem and find this to be caused by another problem that can be repaired, please let me know. Thank you for your time.
