GMC Sierra owners have reported 8 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Noticed vivid and persistent engine vibration shortly after purchase - with no associated check engine code. Vibration happens at all engine and ambient temperatures (especially below 50 degrees fahrenheit), at all altitudes, regardless if in park, neutral, or drive. Vibration is so noticeable, you can watch the waves vibrate through a class of water when placed on the dashboard. Taken to two different dealerships and both have stated the vibration experienced is per normal design for 6. 2l engine. Hard to believe gm would design a $65k+ vehicle that purposely vibrates/shakes. Escalated through gm corporate (sr# 8-3108393xxx), to which they confirmed truck is running as designed. Since the engine was not throwing a code, no further investment/resolution was needed on their end. Their solution to me. . . Sell the truck if not happy. Of course they did not say that, but that's the way I interpreted their response to mean. Buyer beware.

I was parked on a sloped driveway (about 10 - 15 degrees). I started the engine, stepped on the brake pedal and took the car out of park into drive. Brake pedal was normal. I started to roll forward and when I pushed the brake pedal the car did not slow. I slammed the brake pedal and it went all the way to the floor. At this point I went off the end of the driveway onto a 45 degree downward sloped lawn; then into a wooded area at the top of a ravine. I slammed into a tree. The car was judged a total loss by my insurance company. I did not get a brake warning light. The airbags did not deploy. The car was serviced at a union park GMC (wilmington, DE) two days prior. Including brake inspection. Cause of brake failure was determined to be ruptured brake line. Both front and rear brakes were failed.

Engine light symbol message appeared on vehicle during the early part of September. (not quite sure of the date). Dealership indicated that the work was covered under warranty and will require a full day to replace parts. After repair the vehicle seem to operate excellently until the middle part of October. Engine light message appeared again on vehicle. At this time the service manager identified the problem as a sensor overheating. Needed to bring vehicle back when diesel mechanic is on duty. Requested advice for travel. Service manager cleared code. Engine light message came on again in minutes. The next day while traveling engine lost of power message came on within 150 miles from where we departed. Before lost of power a message of low in exhaust fluid flashed on and off. Pulled to the side of the road and turned engine off for about 30 minutes. Restarted vehicle and the vehicle drove well to our destination of 248 miles more. Carried vehicle to a GMC dealership. The dealership identified the following codes: p113a-egr temp 3-4 correlation; p2471-egr temp sensor 4 high voltage; p20cc-exhaust fuel injector performance history. Dealer stated repair could not be address due to other scheduled appointments for a week. Dealership mechanic cleared codes. Engine symbol returned in 25 minutes. While returning back home the vehicle again gave the message low in exhaust fluid and within minutes went into lost of power mode. Scheduled appointment with the dealership again to resolve the problem.

My vehicle taps very loud when I first crank cold engine. Dealer says this is carbon build-up because of new emmisions regulations and wont harm engine. My dealer says they can perform a treatment for approx. $100. 00 that will correct but needs to be done every 20000 miles. My vehicle is still under new car warranty but they said this service is not covered. I have several friend experiencing same problem. I feel this is a defect in the new general motors engine. Thanks.

Loose body bolts;repaired by dealer. Had evo sensor replaced at a chevy dealer since they knew about the problem that affected this new feature, electronic variable orifice was new in 1997. The truck was dangarous to drive, felt like a go-cart, all over the place. They chevy dealer also burned in a new program for mixtures and timing went they replaced both O2 sensors and cleaned the egr valve. Did I pay to replace these items due to a bad program?? I think I did. What is warrenty on emission system from the manufacturer. ???.

Vehicle stalled while driving. Had coasted to side of road. Restarted & vehicle shut off. The differential seal was leaking oil. The vehicle was making noises in the universal joint. Taking vehicle to mechanic. Also, leaf spring on passenger's sid efailed/replaced/smelled oil due to pcv valve failure, an dtransmission would not shift into drive or reverse.
Engine check light kept coming on. The egr valve was stuck in the open position and will not close. Consumer was told not to panic, and to drive with the engine check light continuously on.
The oil light illuminated after 2500 miles. The consumer found out that the vehicle had consumed over 2 quarts of oil and emitted blue smoke when started cold. The dealer replaced the pcv valve as a cause but the vehicle continued smoking and consuming more oil, the dealer informed the consumer that eventually they would have a redesigned valve cover to prevent the problem, but that they could do no more at this time.
