I filed a complaint last year (odi# 10125958) about my one tailgate cable breaking and gm telling me that my VIN was not covered under the tailgate cable recall NHTSA#04v129000 gm recall#04007. I have not heard anything from the NHTSA or gm. Since then my other cable has broken making my tailgate useless. Now whenever I have to load something into my truck, I have to take my tailgate off. That's an injury just waiting to happen. But then again, I guess the NHTSA does not care or listen until the injuries happen anyway.

Tail gate support cable has broken.
Tail gate cables have failed due to rust, this is the 2nd set of cables that have failed I was loading hay on to the truck when the cables gave way I fell to the ground twisting my ankle. I have replaced the cables with the new style cables that were made due to a recall in 2003 of one year truck. The galvanized cables were used on more than the year recalled and are clearly of poor design. Gm is not willing to replace them free of charge because NHTSA has not issued a recall for my year truck I put NHTSA partly at fault for this for not recalling all years using this cable.

In the final recall letter the manufacturer included a costumer claim form. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN.

While coming to a slow stop(-10mph and dry) the antilock brakes started to operate causing a failure for an assured distance . Wheel speed sensors to be cause ,replaced at dealership. The tailgate cables were replaced under recall. The new cables were unequal in length which placed all of the weight on the tailgate on one cable.
The cables on the tailgate of my 1999 GMC Sierra broke, throwing my wife and I to the ground. This event took place in houghton county michigan while my wife and I were grouse hunting. I am aware that there is a product safety recall on these cables, ut it does not include 1999 Sierra which makes no sense.

I am an attorney in akron, ohio and I represent the family of a man that died and a man who suffered serious brain injuries while riding on the tailgate of a 2003 GMC Sierra when the tailgate straps broke.
The tailgate straps on my 2002 GMC seirra both broke at the same time and the tailgate fell down to the bumper. My local gm dealer knew of a problem but stated that no new item had been made to correct the strap problem, so they just put new straps back on my truck, just like the ones that broke.
Tailgate cables have broken twice since I have purchased the truck new. Gm has recall model years 200 and up. The model change for this truck was in 1999. The recall should be extended to include the 1999 model year vehicles.

My 2002 GMC 2500hd truck this past weekend had a failure in the tailgate cable system. I was driving my atv into the bed when the left cable broke and the tailgate suddenly lowered a few inches. Fortunately, the right cable didn't break or serious injury would have occurred. After looking at the broken cable, there was evidence of rust inside the plastic covering on the wire strands that make up the cable. There is no way to inspect the cables for a potential hazard prior to a catastrophic occurrence. I will be replacing mine with a stainless strap system so this dangerous defect won't happen again.
Consumer opened the tailgate and noticed that right side tailgate strap broke.
Consumer stated while vehicle standing at a stop tailgate steel straps broke, causing tailgate to drop.
