When opening the tailgate two support brackets broke. As a result, the tailgate fell to the ground. Both supports were replaced. There were broken cables.

Cable corroded and broke that holds the tailgate on my 1999 GMC Sierra pickup. Other cable is corroded ready to break. Can not put any load on tailgate for fear that it will fall and hit someone and hurt them.

Tailgate straps break for no reason. I have replaced them twice with in the past 4 years.

Tailgate strap on pass side of truck broke while tailgate was down and tailgate actually came off and damaged tailgate. This has happened 3 times after this. My 17 year old son drives this truck and 1 times this happened he was on a busy street and could not get to the side of the road and drug the tailgate about 1/4 of a mile before he could get out of traffic to reattach the tailgate. I have not had the tailgate repaired, because of the fear of this happening again and causing even more damage. I have at this point removed the tailgate from the truck until I can find a resoution for this problem.

Both tailgate cables failed without warning, dumping myself and the desk that I was loading onto the garage floor.

When it rains water collects in the elbow of the rubber sleeve covering the support cable holding the tailgate up. The water in the elbow caused both cables to corrode and break.

The tail gate cable snapped in half when the passenger was exiting the back of the pick up. The passenger hit his/her head on the driveway. The cause of the cable failure was undetermined. Consumer noted both cables snapped sending his assistant face first to the ground. His knees were first to make contact with the concrete and he laid there several minutes before trying to move.

Tailgate cable rusted and broke. This occurred while consumer was loading a lawn mower onto the tailgate. Recall 04v129000 was issued, but this vehicle was not included due to model year.

Failure Date: 07/06/2003

Consumer placed a light weight box of clothes on the tailgate and both cables snapped, dropping the full weight of the tailgate on his left knee. The consumer stated the two cables had plastic sheaths over them to protect the metal cables from the weather, however when the tail gates were closed, the plastic sheaths cracked, which allowed water inside and caused the cables to rust through.

2001 GMC Sierra 1500 pick-up ailgate cables snapped (both) when I sat on the tailgate. I am not too heavy the cables are defective by allowing water the seep into the cable and rust while not showing any obvious problem untill the failure.

The tailgate cable broke while loading an atv bike. As result, the bike flipped backwards and injured consumer's hands. This failure was caused by rust developing in the cable. The consumer has met other consumer's who have experienced the same problem.

I was sitting on the tailgate of my 1999 GMC Sierra when one tailgate cable broke then the other one broke the next day when I opened the tailgate. I replaced both cables with gm replacement parts at my expense .

Gm Sierra pickup tailgate cable recall. The cables on the tailgate of the consumer's vehicle broke twice. The cable are the same as the ones recall for model year 2000-2004. The consumer believes these cable should be included in the recall.

E-mail fm jeremy bruenn (NY) request NHTSA to recall the 1999 gm Sierra for defective tailgate & cables, cable on his 1999 truck rusted and broke without warning, reply attn christine rumfola/rochester ofc, ES have no rec of previous fm mr. Bruno. (2000-2004 tailgate problems had been recalled) this occurred when the consumer was driving a lawn tractor onto the bed of the 99 GMC Sierra. B.

54 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Problems relating to numerous breaks in the tail gate cables on the GMC Sierra. Reference odi 10113427. The consumer was injured 15 years ago when the tailgate on his Ford 150 failed. The consumer's current complaints is in reference to his 1999 GMC Sierra. This truck is on it's third set of tailgate cables in only 5 years. The rubber coating on the cables cracked over time which resulted on water and road salt seeping into the cracks. Over time the metal core rusted then broke. The consumer believes that the tailgate problem is not isolated to one manufacturer .

55 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Consumer complained about a tailgate problem. Consumer was putting a 4 wheel vehicle on the bed of the truck, and while doing so, tailgate malfunctioned. The tailgate cables were rusted. It smashed the bumper.

56 Tailgate Hinge problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

While backing out consumer heard a loud bang. Consumer inspected vehicle, and noticed tailgate dropped open.
