1 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2015 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 06/30/2017

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500. While the vehicle was being reversed with a trailer attached, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to operate. The contact stated that the trailer crashed into the awning of the residence. There were no injuries. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed evidence of brake fluid leaking from the brake booster, which allowed brake fluid to enter the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to performance Chevrolet (located at 3222 beverly pike, elkins, wv 26241, tel: (304) 591-1077) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the brake booster was leaking and was 1,000 miles out of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted or notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 37,023.

3 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 06/27/2015

I was moving the vehicle in the driveway when the break pedal went to the floor. The truck stopped so I got out and looked under it and saw break fluid pouring out of a break line that had completely rusted through. The former owner had already had another break line replaced because his breaks had ruptured due to the lines rusting through while driving at highway speeds and towing a fifth wheel camper. He was able to avoid wrecking and came to a stop. This truck has low miles and about 90% of its use has been during the summer so it has had limited contact with salted roads yet the entire undercarriage of the vehicle is rusting at an incredible rate. I am fortunate that I was simply moving the truck rather than hauling my camper on the highway which is it's typical use; I and/or others could have been severely injured or killed. The rusting through of the break lines is a safety issue!.

4 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 02/24/2015

Driving into driveway applied brakes , pedal went right to the floor no warning light or any indication of a problem got out of truck and found fluid dripping off frame by fuel tank. Ruptured line above tank on frame, other brake lines also look corroded. After some research I found this to be a common problem on gm trucks . Owners need to be made aware of this problem before someone is seriously hurt. I believe gm should be forced to repair the defective lines.

5 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 10/17/2014

While driving to work approaching an intersection the car in front of me signaled to turn right last minute and applied the brakes, I also applied the brakes and the pedal went all the way to the floor. If I didn't have enough following distance I would have crashed right in to the car. I only had about 1/2 inch of brake pedal and drove in low gear very carefully the rest of the short distance to work. When I got out of the truck I saw brake fluid pouring out of the brake lines below the drivers side door and they were completely rusted out. Upon further inspection I realized all my brake lines were rusty on a nine year old vehicle, I never saw anything like this before. I had to get the vehicle towed and repaired at a local garage that charged me $1,547. 61 to replace all the lines and did a horrible job. I had called the GMC dealer I dealt with in the past and they were inundated with recall work and had at least a 2 week wait and another gm dealer that GMC customer service provided me and they were also all booked up with recall work and so I was forced to trust a local shop. This a safety issue that could get people killed, I always have my wife and kids in the truck and it was a death trap. In talking to GMC reps is seems they have no intention to reimburse me for this premature and accelerated rusting condition that could have caused me or someone else their life.

6 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2006 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 08/15/2014

While driving I noticed smoke coming from under the hood and a fluid dripping onto the floor of the truck. Then there was absolutely no brakes. Pedal to the floor. I was able to get it into a parking lot and coasted in neutral til it stopped on a parking curb. The brake line had rusted through and ruptured, and the fluid was spraying into a hole in the firewall and into the cab of the truck. This is the third brake line that has ruptured in such a manner. No warning at all, and then sudden loss of braking. The warning light did not come on until the truck had been sitting for over an hour while I was waiting for a tow, and a large amount of fluid had leaked out. I'm just glad this had happened at a low speed and not on an exit ramp from the freeway. The ruptures are occurring where the lines run flat across a support. This is a poor design.

7 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 05/26/2014

Was leaving my drive way and went to put on brakes and they made a hissing sound and peddle went all the way to the floor and brake fluid started pouring out, so pushed emergency brake and nothing happened there was no brakes. With help got truck back in drive way and got under truck where fluid was leaking and the brake lines were all rusted into. Thank god I didn`t make it down the road before they went out and hit or killed someone.

8 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2006 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 01/24/2014

Was ready to leave work, had foot on brake pedal,it felt spongey started truck, pumped it up it still felt spongey as I got to end of the road I was driving on I went to hit brake for stop sign/the brake pedal went right down to the floor and brake light/check idiot light and message came on dash, oil reminder as service brake failure came on up as the message. Barely was I able to stop had to shift truck to 3 low for additional engine braking as I got up to the intersection and almost blew through the stop sign, drove it bout a mile home, looked under truck and saw brake fluid shooting out and dripping off everything by the gas tank. Havent driven it since.

9 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 01/03/2014

After putting the vehicle in park and proceeding down my driveway, the abs lights began flashing and chiming on the dash. I pushed the brake pedal and it went to the floor. I stopped the vehicle with the emergency brake. I got out of the vehicle and noticed brake fluid dripping underneath the truck. I crawled under the truck and found the left rear brake line had corroded through just above the fuel tank. I called the dealer and he stated this is a known defect from gm. He said I needed all brake lines replaced and gm's new parts had an extra coating to prevent corrosion. It cost me $1100. This type of failure seems way too soon for a truck with 38,000 miles.

10 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 07/27/2013

As I began backing out of my drive way my brake peddle went to the floor and I had a rapid decrease in braking power. Upon investigation I noticed brake fluid leaking from the brake lines right above the frame rail on the driver side. If this happened while driving it could have led to injuries or fatalities especially when such a large and heavy truck suddenly loses braking power.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 12/04/2012

Brake lines rusted through. All brake fluid leaked out. No brake system including emergency brake failed. Had to stop vehicle against curb system.

12 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 10/18/2012

Tl- the contact owns a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. While driving approximately 15 mph, the contact depressed the brakes and the brake pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The tow truck driver noticed that brake fluid was leaking onto the rear axle. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000. Kmj.

13 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 10/10/2012

While attempting to slow the vehicle to exit the highway, the brake pedal went to the floor and there was limited braking. The vehicle had to be slowed by down shifting. After the vehicle was off of the highway, the brake warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where mechanics found that one of the steel brake lines had rusted and ruptured causing the brake fluid to leak and the reduction in braking ability. All of the steel brake lines are severely rusted and need to be replaced due to concerns of additional failures.

14 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 09/17/2012

Leaving work I pulled out from the parking lot and drove about 500 yards. Went to apply brakes and pedal went to the floor. I was able to make it back to my work parking lot and stopped the truck. Noticed that brake fluid was pouring from under the truck in two places. One leak was under the drivers area and the other was in front of the left rear wheel. The place I work has a car lift. Put the truck on the lift and the brake lines were rusted through. The truck has enormous amounts of rust on the frame, suspension, and axles. This truck is not my daily driver. I do not live near the ocean nor do I push snow with it. I have never seen brake lines rust out like this. Gm stated that I had to take it to a dealer for inspection. After reading up on the topic I know gm won't do anything about the lines. I already ordered stainless steel brake lines for the truck and will install them. Hopefully gm will reimburse owner for this expense.

15 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 07/21/2012

Brake pedal went to the floor. Inspection discovered that all the vehicle brake lines were rusted, some to the point of leaking brake fluid.

16 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 04/15/2012

The contact owns a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500hd. The contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the brake pedal extended to the floor with a delayed response. In addition, the brake fluid reservoir became completely empty due to excessive leakage of fluid. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and then towed to an independent mechanic who replaced the corroded brake line. The identical failure recurred. The vehicle had not been repaired for the most recent failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 31,500. The VIN was unavailable.

17 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 11/19/2011

The brake petal went soft, the brake system lost pressure, major brake fluid leak from metal line(s) adjacent to the abs pump/module assy. Subsequent inspection revealed that all of the metal brake line(s), (pipes), were heavily rusted at the point where they are routed above the vehicle frame, approximately 18" in front of the abs pump assy.

18 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 08/20/2011

A break line ruptured resulting in loss of fluid and diminished breaking. Fortunately it did not result in a catastrophic loss in breaking at a critical time. The ruptured line is near the gas tank and at first appeared to be a gas leak. Upon inspection all break lines are substantially rusted and must be replaced to maintain safety. One rusty line could indicate damage or a single defective part. 100% of the lines being corroded to an unsafe level indicates substandard parts. The rear disc breaks have been a constant problem with corrosion of sliding parts resulting in calipers not moving freely. The spongy feel to the breaks was attributed to sticking of the rear calipers rather than a fluid leak. Annual lubrication and a total replacement of rear breaks has become normal practice. The poor rear breaks can lead one to not notice a slow leak of break fluid until a total loss of breaking action. The slight extra cost for corrosion resistant break parts could save lives.

19 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 08/10/2011

I own a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500hd 4wd truck. It has 90,500 miles on it. Multiple brake lines under the driver side door have rusted and are leaking brake fluid. The vehicle is unsafe to drive at this point unless repairs are made costing me over $1000. I cannot drive the truck until repairs are made. It appears after doing some online reseach that there is already a NHTSA investigation concerning premature brake line rusting/failure on gm trucks. I have driven cars that are over 30 years old and they do not have the kind of rust I have on my GMC sierra that is only 7 years old!!! please make gm do a recall on this design failure. They are endangering the lives of their customers!.

20 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 08/05/2011

Brakes failed as brake line corrosion allowed fluid leak. This was first of multiple line failures in the last three years. Three different factory lines failed then one transmission line. This truck is not used during winter and was under coated multiple times. No other part on this truck is corroded nearly as much as every steel line on it, including the gas lines( also replaced just last year) truck runs and drives excellent except for this corrosion problem.

21 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

While towing 4000# boat, approached traffic signal and applied brakes while moving at approx 10 mph, the brakes applied and the pedal then bottomed out on the floor. The vehicle veered left and came to a stop after much continued braking effort. The vehicle was driven off the highway at the first safe intersection and examined. Inspection under the drivers side of the frame revealed rusted through steel brake line from master cylinder and leaking brake fluid onto the street. Vehicle and boat were towed, later inspection revealed four of five steel brake lines at the proportioning valve were rusted to point that replacement was necessary.

22 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 06/18/2011

Wife and child driving truck, brake pedal wnt to the floor and service brake indicator came on while on interstate. Stopped at a gas station and filled master cylinder reservoir with fluid. Drove vehicle 8 more miles and traded with me, when I got to the vehicle, I found brake fluid leaking onto ground, found lines corroded beyond belief on driver side frame around wheel well. Drove truck home using emergency brake, low speed, and down shifting. No repairs have been performed due to strong belief this is a manufacturer defect.

23 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 05/21/2011

Hydraulic brakes failed without warning while driving on a back road pulling the trailer with a 500 lb mower in the trailer. Brake fluid poured from the behind the driver door under from the frame near the fuel filter and brake line distribution block. Front brake lines replaced one year ago after an accident where the brakes also failed and front brake lines replaced. 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 4wd with about 40k mileage. Brake failure has occurred twice with this vehicle. . . I have another car, Dodge grand caravan with 97k and no brake line problems. Stays in the same driveway and drives the same roads.

24 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 03/29/2011

Lost brakes while driving 35 mph was able to stop and noticed brake fluid dripping from above gas tank just forward of rear axle on drivers side. New brake line was installed at GMC dealer in July 2010 after it burst going 45 mph same problem as in July 2010 that caused an accident with property damage to my vehicle and others property after sudden complete brake failure. New line is severely corroded at each green plastic clip after only 7 months.

25 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 01/26/2011

While applying brakes in traffic brake pedal went to floor and truck would not stop. Brake line underneath vehicle was corroded and burst, causing brake fluid leak.

26 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 01/19/2011

When coming to a stop the pedal went to floor and had no brakes. Luckily I was able to swerve and miss the vehicle in from of me. But had to run through the four way stop and was blessed to have no other vehicles in way. The brake fluid was leaking from under the driver side about where the seat is. Upon investigation, the lines are all corroded and rusting. Obviously it only takes one to leak but all need to be replaced. This is such a surprise because this truck sits in the garage most of the time and has very few miles on it.

27 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 11/04/2010

The contact owns a 2002 GMC Sierra 2500. While driving approximately 50 mph the contact depressed the brake pedal and felt the brake pedal fall down to the floor board. The contact was able to drive onto the side of the road. The contact noticed fluid squirting out of the brake line. The contact refilled the master cylinder with brake fluid and drove the vehicle home. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated the front and rear brake line needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired by the dealer. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the front and rear brake lines were replaced. The approximate failure mileage was 37,108.

28 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 07/30/2009

The hydraulic brake booster's pressure accumulator cracked and /or separated from the hydro-boost assembly during normal vehicle operating conditions. The presence of this crack or fractured surface allowed the hydraulic fluid to leak from the accumulator circuit of the booster assembly. The loss of fluid caused increased steering and braking effort.

29 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra 2500

Failure Date: 03/06/2009

During an emergency stop on highway from approx. 45mph, due a tractor trailer suddenly stopping, abs brake system started to fluctuate, but truck did not stop normally. Avoided collision by veering to side of road. Left front brake line, at clip near wheel, leaked brake fluid thereby preventing quick stop. Brake pedal went to floor afterwards, there was seemed to be no secondary hydraulic system pressure for rear brakes. Emergency brake was hardly effective. Turns out all brake lines are severely corroded in nearly all areas, even under hood. Truck has 50,000 miles and is 6 years old. Have also previously experienced sudden power steering failure due to power steering line corrosion and fluid loss. Power steering system provides hydraulic boost for brakes, therefore brakes are impacted also. Brake and power steering lines seem to be made of steel with incorrect or poor alloys, thereby acting like a sacrificial anode on the truck, as evidenced by the rust throughout the lines, vs. Localized rust. Brake lines and power steering lines have been replaced. Still have several rusty lines for inspection if needed.
