GMC Sierra 2500 owners have reported 124 problems related to service brakes (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of GMC Sierra 2500 based on all problems reported for the Sierra 2500.
Power steering pump failed when decelerating after 9500 miles. When power steering pump fails, power assisted braking also fails. Upon deceleration, I could not turn the steering wheel at all or stop the vehicle without extreme pressure on the brake pedal. I narrowly avoided impact with a concrete barricade at the entrance to a parking lot. Gm issued a technical bulletin (dcs7112) on January 16, 2025 identifying the problem and failure and directing dealerships to replace the pump on inventory vehicles. No mention was made to repair or notify owners of the potential problem.

Brand new delivery there was a noise that changes with engine rpm. It also changed with turning the steering wheel. The dealer diagnosed a bad power steering pump. Due to possible metallic contamination all related parts that are connected to the power steering pump including the hydroboost brake assist are going to be replaced.
Intermittent trailer disconnect and loss of electric trailer brake output while towing airstream. The truck is connected to the trailer through the seven way plug. There are no modifications to the truck. This is a safety hazard as I pull a 9000+ lb trailer. Trailer connection drops momentarily and integrated trailer brake controller loses communication with trailer brakes. I went on a 5000 mile trip and my trailer brakes were connecting in disconnecting consistently. Every time there was a disconnection or connection the vehicle would “ding ding. This virtually happened consistently while we were on this long trip. During the trip, we tried to wedge the plug tight and zip tie the door shut, attempting to keep the plug tight. My truck is at the dealership, waiting on a “tool“. This is the second time it has been in the shop for this issue. I supplied a picture of the dash message after it got tired of connecting and disconnecting. I feel this is a serious safety issue. On highway taking an exit. The brake pedal sank and did not engage at normal pressure, I had to push the brake all the way down for it to engage. Concurrently the steering wheel locked up where I could not turn the wheel at all. I drove straight through the exit ramp to the entrance ramp, luckily no one was entering the highway at the same time. I very well could have hurt some one else or myself. The steering wheel finally engaged where I had full power steering again and I was able to remove my truck off the highway and cautiously drove to a parking lot to get it towed. I have not tried to drive sense incident as it is at the dealer for service. The GMC dealer has not inspected the vehicle yet, they are backed up with other services. There were no warning lamps at the time nor before the incident. Symptons see bellow. I have had issues with the brakes and it has been to the dealer 4 times including this incident, service issue #1 at 21,501 miles -breaks were pulsating, squealing and rough and it was shaking the steering column - the smell of burning breaks was present after drives -solution they sanded down the hot spots on both rotors and pads for the front brakes temporarily fixed the breaking and steering column shaking ( it did not solve the burning break smell problem. Service issue #2 at 28,142 miles breaks were pulsating, squeaking, and steering column shaking - the smell of burning breaks was still present after drives. Solution new front brake pads and rotors. Service issue #3 at 39,893 miles rear brakes locked up while taking a turn on to a street breaks were pulsating squeaking and steering column shaking smell of burning breaks is still present after drives solution machine front brake rotors. Could not reproduce brake locking issue final issue as mentioned above #4 @43,426 miles I cant help but think the constant break issues were warning signs.
The main tailgate will not go down or function properly and it says online there is a national recall for this, but does not come up when I search my vehicle. When I turn on my left turn signal the brights flash for no reason and this is a known major issue with the vehicles as well. The trucks computer is telling me low on coolant even though it is not that has already been fixed through a 3rd party warranty parking brake was stuck on when I bought the vehicle and had been for a long time you could tell and I had to pay over $1100 to fix it at gm. The Ford collision system does not work properly and the cameras will come on at certain times when they're not supposed to be and not come on when they are supposed to be.

Premature brake pad wear on all brakes. All break pads worn down and had to be replaced at or before 25,000 miles. No trailer pulling and only light driving. Dealer stated rotors needed to be turned as well due to extremely low brake life.
This vehicle exhibits the same failure described in NHTSA recall n232426400 — spontaneous unlatching after rain due to water intrusion into the exterior tailgate release switch. I’m requesting a goodwill replacement under gm bulletin # n232426400 as the failure mechanism and part are identical. It has caused brake failure and nearly killed me because of battery drain while driving. All american Chevrolet of midland texas is refusing to solve the problem and says no recall is available.
2021 GMC Sierra 2500hd 6. 6l gas 6 speed automatic transmission w/4wd after a brake service job the vehicle will randomly kick on the traction control/abs and the right front brake will lock up. The steering wheel jerk is violent enough to remove the wheel from the drivers hands. No traction control or abs lights flash on the dash when this occurs and it has caused the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic and also off the road. The dealer was unable to recreate the issue nor are there any stored codes/issues found when having the truck diagnosed. Abs and speed sensor wires have been reviewed and none were damaged during the brake job. All wheel speed sensors are functional and reading when the issue happens. This issue happens during dry or wet conditions and is random without warning.

We noticed that the brakes were really soft. We literally had to push on the brakes with excessive force. We took it to lynch - west bend, WI for a service call and was told that nothing was wrong with it. After leaving the dealership we did our own research (the hubby is a certified master technician himself). Come to find out through gm, contacts through tbm brakes and duramax forum. Com "brake pedal effort" we found the issue and a solution and we fixed it ourselves. This truck is brand spanking new and the dealership threw their hands in the air with a safety issue and let us drive out of the parking lot. Imagine driving away after being told no issue to end up in an accident due to failed brakes. Who's to blame for that? certainly not the customer. It was only when the new car sales manager took the truck for a drive, he agreed that there was a problem. - too late we took it home and fixed it ourselves. This problem needs to be looked into seeing its a known issue!.
While trailering a large RV the information center sent me two warnings. The first was trailer brakes disconnected the second was service trailer brakes. Took it to the dealer they were unable to replicate so they blew me off.
My booster is leaking into the floor. I took it to the dealer and they said it was the booster and it needs to be replaced. This could make the truck lose its brakes and run into something or someone.
Problem #1: trailer brakes failed while pulling 40' fifth wheel trailer. Was driving at about 50mph on a 55mph road and was approaching a stop light. I went to apply my truck and trailer brakes simultaneously and quickly found out I had "lost" my trailer brake. This happened another two times within the next 10 mile trip to my house. I immediately disconnected my trailer and took my truck to the shop. The GMC dealer fixed this issue, however, it is both scary and extremely dangerous to the public when something like this happens on a brand new truck. Problem #2: right around 30,000 miles I was driving (unloaded) down the road at about 35mph when I felt a hard clunk in the transmission followed by grinding noises - immediately a notice flashed on the dash stating the truck went into reduced acceleration and the check engine light came on. I brought my truck to a local GMC dealer to be serviced on June 19th and they advised me it was the allison transmission valve body. The part has been on back-order and my truck is still at the dealership sitting in the back lot with at least 4 other 2024 hd models. I called gm twice to inquire about safety recall n242454440 (covering 2020-2022 gm vehicles) and recommend that it get extended beyond 2022 since the problem with the transmission valve body has not been resolved yet. I have not heard anything back from them since that call back in June.
Experienced loss of power steering, loss of brakes.
When dealer took apart my rear brakes the parking brake shoe lining was un bonded from the shoe 26,000 miles and seems to be a defective part.

The contact owns a 2025 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal to come to a complete stop, the brakes made a loud whistling and squealing sound. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, bellamy strickland Chevrolet GMC (145 industrial blvd, mcdonough, GA 30253); who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The dealer informed the contact that it was a known issue with no fix for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer, who was also unable to diagnose the vehicle. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The mileage was approximately 5,000.
Parking brake locking up. There is recall on the brake module for my year make and model but my vehicle isn't on the list and I feel it should be. I'm having the same issues as they are. I can't drive it until it is fixed. Very dangerous.
024 GMC Sierra 2500 denali ultimate, which has suffered: •five catastrophic engine failures at highway speeds. •total brake failure, leaving the truck unable to stop. •severe electrical malfunctions, including flickering headlights at night. •retaliatory actions from general motors after I refused to waive my legal rights. I have documented proof, including gm’s own service records, emails, and a 7-minute recorded statement from gm’s highest-level technician, confirming that gm installed the wrong computer module (1500 series instead of the required 2500 series) in my truck. Additionally, I have evidence that gm executives instructed technicians to conduct diagnostics, take apart the engine, and reassemble it—but not repair the defect—after I refused to sign an affidavit waiving my rights. Due to these failures, I suffered a dislocated shoulder in one of the incidents, and my [xxx] daughter remains traumatized to this day. Given the immediate danger this defect poses to other GMC Sierra 2500 owners, I respectfully request that NHTSA open an investigation and consider issuing a recall before a tragedy occurs. 1. Engine failures since 3,000 miles – gm’s own work orders confirm issue since purchasing my 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 denali ultimate, I have experienced five catastrophic engine failures, all occurring while traveling at highway speeds (70 mph): •the truck suddenly lost power, dropping from 70 mph to 5-10 mph within seconds. •this created an immediate risk of being rear-ended or losing control on the highway. •gm’s own service records confirm that my engine issues began at just 3,000 miles. •gm dealerships misdiagnosed the issue four times, returning my truck to me in an unsafe condition. •the real cause was only identified after the fifth failure, when a gm-certified head technician finally determined that gm had installed the wrong computer module (1500 series instead of 2500 series). This means that for months, gm knew my vehicle w information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia.
Seems to be a known problem according to a google search but brake fluid leaking from brake pedal onto drivers floor mat. Seems to be a bad brake booster according to google and happening for some at a few weeks to a couple months old in the newer ones. I noticed first on my truck around 58,000 miles.
Trailer brake controller will intermittently stop working. “check trailer wiring” will show up randomly on the display and no trailer braking will be available. This has happened with 3 different trailers. The trailer wiring was gone over and the issue is with the truck. Trailer brakes work with other trucks and aftermarket trailer brake controllers. GMC and dealer were notified and no fix is available. Researching online there are several complaints about this. The trailer brake signal should default to being sent similar to all aftermarket trailer brake controllers. This would be much safer rather than not sending the brake signal at all. This hd truck is rated to tow trailers over 20,000lbs and without trailer brakes it causes an extremely dangerous situation. I was forced to pull over on the highway and purchase an aftermarket trailer brake controller to continue safe travel.
Tires locking up while driving. Not safe to drive.
I have a 5th wheel with solar and my brake controler stops working periodically. I have a case# with gm 9-13676268071. I also hjave an extended warranty with gm and it's not covered due to my VIN# not being on a bullentin# 23-na-149. Gm also has a customer satisfaction progream # n232414840 and still won't cover it. This is a major safety item and concern for me.
The antilock braking system is not functioning properly. The sensor for the anti-lock brake control pump module is defective.

I purchased a 2024 GMC 2500 hd truck to pull a 2021 8,000 lb gvw camping trailer that is equipped with electric trailer brakes. My trailer has functioned perfectly related to the trailer brakes with my previous vehicle (2011 Toyota tundra). With the GMC 2500, at approximately 3000 miles on the vehicle, a “trailer brake disconnected or disabled” and “check trailer wiring” warning began popping up on my information center of the truck. The trailer braking system would not function, though all other functions of the lighting and camera systems to the trailer worked indicating that the wiring and grounding were not an issue with the trailer. The brake system would intermittently return to normal. And then this warning and disconnected condition (I. E. No functioning trailer brakes) would return. This occurred rapidly, and very frequently. GMC has acknowledged a problem with some vehicles with this problem by publishing a TSB that purports to correct this issue (23-na-149) that recommends replacement of the trailer brake control module (part no. 212327200000019b). I had this repair performed while on a trip in south dakota away from my home state in arkansas and the truck and trailer functioned as normal for approximately 3000 miles of towing. However, the issue has returned and my local GMC dealer repair shop (little rock, ar) places the blame on the trailer and not the truck. Towing with this 2024 GMC 2500 hd is very unsafe to the occupants and any others on the road due to loss of braking while towing a heavy load or navigating steep grades with a trailer equipped as described. This problem is now all over GMC/chevy truck forums and is not just me or my combination. This issue is gonna get people killed.
The contact owns a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the message "check service brakes now" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with electric parking brake malfunction. The mechanic informed the contact that the electric parking brake had been engaged unintendedly, causing the rear driver's side brake calipers to seize. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred on the rear passenger's side while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with electric parking brake circuitry failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.
Hello, I purchased a 2022 GMC sierra at4 2500 in August of 2022. I then purchased a 2022 alliance avenue 30rls in September of 2022. The first time we took the alliance avenue out on a camping trip (October 2022), we had brake controller issues. The brake controller would suddenly disconnect and I would have an error on the screen saying that the controller was no longer connected, and the light would go off on the brake controller on the dashboard. At this point, we had no trailer brakes. This issue happened several times, and the controller would go offline and come back, sometimes within seconds, sometimes in minutes (up to 10+). Strangely, the lights and signals continued to work. After the trip, I brought the trailer back to our RV dealership where they inspected the brakes and said we were okay on that end. I then took the truck to a GMC dealership who informed me that everything was good on their end. . . Next trip, same issue. Took the trailer to the RV dealership and they took the system down to the brake pads and said they didn't see anything, but they rerouted some brake wiring just in case. On the way home from the RV dealership, the brake controller continued to fail. Took the truck back to GMC, they found nothing. Had a 3rd party RV repair tech install a solar shutoff switch and replace the trailer side brake plug in pigtail to rule that out. The issue persisted. Took the truck to a chevy dealership, the found no issues. Took the trailer camping several times, same issue persisted, and we were in dangerous situations over the colorado mountains, having this fail multiple times over eisenhower pass and other mountain passes. Took the trailer back to the RV dealership, they found nothing - took it to the chevy dealership, they replaced the truck bed plug-in. The issue persisted. The chevy dealership informed me there was a module replacement for the GMC 2500 2023-2024 trucks, but they could not do that for me.
Electric trailer brake control modular is malfunctioning on my 2015 GMC sierra denali 3500. Multiple of sources told me this is a common problem with this generation of GMC.

The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the sun struck the solar panel used to charge the battery, and the surge from the battery entered the pigtail going through the truck, and disconnected the brake module, causing it to become disengaged from vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the camper and vehicle dealer who both stated there was no issue for concern. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer for the camper and the vehicle were made aware of the issue. The vehicle failure mileage was 8,000.
My vehicle inadvertently locks the rear tires at highway speeds and then releases and drives. In some instances it may brake several times causing the tires to burn rubber for a short distance causing rear traffic to either swerve to avoid rear ending me and in a couple instances causes the rear following traffic to abruptly change lanes to avoid rear ending me.
The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while stopped at an intersection, the vehicle moved forward while the brakes was fully depressed. The contact also stated on a level surface, the vehicle accelerated about 4 mph without the contacts foot on the accelerator. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was duplicated, however the dealer stated they operated as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate mileage was 100.
Trailer brake controller that is built into the truck intermittently works when towing a trailer. I will be towing down the road and all of a sudden I will get a warning on my gauge display that says “check trailer wiring” and the light that indicates that the trailer brakes are working goes out. Meanwhile, all of the lights on the trailer still work. After about one second, another message appears and says “trailer brakes connected” and the light on the brake controller comes back on. When this happens, the larger screen sometimes has a message that says “trailer brake gain recalled” but sometimes it says “brake gain not recalled”. When the message “check trailer wiring” comes on, the trailer brakes don’t work. The trailer brakes start working again when the message “trailer brakes connected” comes back on. You can feel this in the truck, especially when it goes off, on, off, on, etc while you are trying to slow down. You literally feel the truck surging as the brakes are intermittently being applied. I have taken the truck to a GMC dealership and they were not able to duplicate the issues since the issue only happens when the truck is hooked up to a trailer that has trailer brakes. I had a certified RV mechanic inspect the trailer brakes and they are working like they should. I hooked the same trailer up to a Ford f-250 and had zero issues. I hooked the same trailer back up to my GMC and immediately had the same issues. I am taking the truck and trailer to a different GMC dealership on March 11th to see if they can duplicate this and diagnose the problem. I called gm corporate customer service and they were basically no help. This is a big safety issue because the truck is not telling the trailer’s brakes to function like they are designed, which makes it much more difficult to slow down, especially going down hill. I have done a bunch of research on this problem and found numerous online forums on this topic, so I know I am not the only one experiencing this.
I purchased a 2021 GMC denali 2500 in December 2023. A couple days after purchasing the vehicle I received a message on the dash saying the front camera was not working. I took the vehicle into the dealership where they said they reset the computer and nothing was wrong with the vehicle. One month later I was involved in a collision where a vehicle turned in front of my vehicle and the automatic emergency braking failed to activate. I applied the brakes but due to my delayed reaction time 1. 5 seconds, I broadsided the small vehicle with my large truck. Luckily the speed was only 20 mph and no one was hurt or killed. At this time I did not know my vehicle was equipped with aeb. In October I discovered through gm and a different dealership that my vehicle was equipped with automatic emergency braking. I have had several occasions when the aeb including the crash where the aeb should have activated but never did. In 11 months I have never had the aeb activate. I took the vehicle into the dealership where I bought the vehicle and they said their computer said everything was operating correctly. The tech never drove the vehicle where the aeb should have activated. I have driven many cars and even the same model vehicle as mine, so I know what the aeb feels like and my vehicle the aeb is not working. The dealership told me to take the vehicle they checked everything gm told them to check. When I talked to gm they told me to immediately take the truck to the dealership and the dealership did nothing.
Towing an RV with solar panels. When the trailer battery becomes fully charged and has a higher charge than the vehicle battery, the trailer brake control module becomes disabled. When this occurs, you have no trailer brakes. Combined weight of truck and RV exceeds 20,000 pounds. Trying to stop with only truck brakes is dangerous, especially if you are on a decent. I not only believe this to be a safety issues, but somebody is going to get killed.
On 9/20/23 my truck suffered a brake failure in which one of the front calipers ruptured and there was a complete loss of braking. The brakes were repaired the following day and an "abs" light remained on after the brakes were repaired and the brake lines were bled. The vehicle codes were checked and a "c0110_04 pump motor circuit open" fault was detected. It should be noted that even though the brake system was bled and and part were replaced, there were no brakes and the vehicle could not be driven. I had the vehicle towed to rossi GMC in washington, NJ and they diagnosed the problem as a bad electronic brake control module and motor. Then I was advised by their service department that no parts were available because of the general motors strike and there was no date as to when the parts would be available. I asked if I could try to locate the parts myself and they agreed as long as they were genuine gm parts. After calling hundreds of gm/chevy dealers I was able to locate one (1) ebcm at all american Chevrolet/Cadillac in muncie, in. After speaking with their parts department, they advised me that they have the part and they won't sell it to me over the phone, only in person. I live over 9 hours away from the dealer and this was not feasible. My complaint is this, although the abs system in my truck was not functioning properly should the regular brake system still be working? if so, why is mine not. This is a huge safety concern considering if the abs system were to fail at highway speeds this could cause a bad crash.
