1 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2017

The first occurance was a year ago when driving to play golf. When I was about one mile from the course, the brake pedal went to the floor when depressed. I was able to make to the course and called a tow truck. The repair was made by the local dealer. He asked me if I lived at the coast due to the corrosion found on the brake line. I do not live near the coast and the vehicle is garage kept with only 102,000 miles on it. Most recently while driving in town, I depressed the brake pedal and the same thing happened. It went to the floor and was very slow to stop. In my estimation, this is very poor workmanship on behalf of general motors! I hope that no person has been killed due to this defect.

2 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2016

This vehicle came with factory tow package. Brake lines, rear, were repaired a year ago. Towing a horse trailer with horse ( approx 6500 lbs total ), the front break line from the abs module broke and pedal went to floor while exiting 90w onto 84w. Trailer brakes finally stopped the vehicle a few inches from the auto in front of us . This was on new years eve this year, and 2:00pm in the afternoon. Found a garage/mechanic to repair the front line. This could have caused a major accident involving a number of cars and trucks. I have the vehicle inspected at every oil change, and have it repaired when needed. I have read of many issues with the (cheap ) brake lines gm has used in these vehicles( 1999 to 2003 ), and as they get older, they are just an accident waiting to happen. Gm should recall these vehicles, and fix the problem with corroding break lines. Especially with their " professional grade" advertisements. Very misleading.

3 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2016

For the second time in an approximate 12 month period, I had to replace a brake line failure. Until now, I didn't know that gm has a "replacement rebuild kit". However, the first time my sister was driving and had a brake failure with a car load of family aboard, in jacksonville FL. A nationally known company replaced the portion of the brake line that ruptured, but they did warn me that rust was rampart because of the salt. Yesterday, I was driving to work on i495, d. C. Beltway at 50 mph, where thousands of people travel daily and I had another catastrophic brake failure at 50 mph. That scenario, just thinking about it again, scared me half to death and I just fixed the same thing last year for 600. 00+ and unexpectedly it happens again. Only by the grace of god, no one was injured or killed or had substantial property damage. What I found out later after investigating this problem, and the same company who replaced the first brake line said it would be 1500. 00 to fix a portion of the brake line. This issue is well known by gm and has been investigated for 5 years and gm did not do a recall because most warranties have expired. However, with the snow-belts states salting the roads have damaged many gm and other vehicles. From 1999 to 2007 gm trucks and suvs were using non-pv coated brake lines. By these brake lines not being coated with protectant, corrosion runs rampart on your brake line system, this is probable in all the aforementioned vehicles. I think that every dealer should do this replacement for the gm recommend price. I talked to my service manager at chevy/gm today and he said gm doesn't own this dealership and the recommended time to install (4. 5 hours) @ 100. 00 per hour is not realistic. I said you sale and service these vehicles, yet no one wants to step up to fix them until some gets killed, that's ridiculous.

4 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2016

Two years ago I had a sever accident that cause me to hit another car and spin around. The GMC dealer said the cause was rusted out brake lines. Today it happened, but I was luck enough to be just pulling into my parking spot when it happened. The brake line must have rusted out again because I pumped the brake and noticed it coming out of the left rear line. This is very dangerous because it will likely only happen when you are in an emergency situation. There is no pre warning. It will just happen. Perhaps they are making the brake lines out of thinner material because we have many vehicles much older, and never had this problem.

5 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2016

I drove approx. 30 miles to my destination without any trouble. I spent about 2 hours there then started my 2002 Yukon xl to head back home. Upon moving the vehicle I realized I had very limited breaking power. The brake pedal went right to the floor. I dread thinking about what could have happened if I was on the interstate heading home. My mechanic said the brake line failed causing the rear brakes to lose all stopping power. He said he has seen several cases of this same problem on early 2000's GMC trucks and SUV's. I researched this issue and found many of the same complaints online. GMC should stand behind this and pay to repair this obviously defective part replacement. This will be an $800 repair for me and a big disappointment in GMC if they don't stand behind their vehicles.

6 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

I have been notified by 2 mechanics that the my brake lines are rusted/corroded and need to be replaced. I have researched the multiple complaints to GMC regarding this issue. Nhtsa has recomended a recall. Despite GMC corporate statements that the fix/replacement of brake lines will cost $500 (parts and labor) the GMC dealer in my area (danvers, MA) has quoted me over $1,200 and claims ignorance to the $500 claim. I believe this repair should be subject to recall and correction by GMC at no cost to me the owner.

7 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2014

I completely lost the brakes. After further inspection, discovered that the brake lines are completely rusted.

8 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2014

Hit brakes to stop pedal went to floor truck did stop but took alt longer than usual went to garage rusted brake lines one had broke this is second time this has happened two years ago had one line repaired same problem.

9 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2014

While approaching a stop sign I attempted to apply the brakes. The brakes went to the floor. I pumped them repeatedly which did not help much at all. I was not able to slow down, much less stop at the stop sign. With no choice, I rounded the turn at a high rate of speed. Thankfully the approaching vehicle was able to avoid me. Had I arrived at the intersection a few seconds later the result would have likely been different. As this occurred late at night with almost no traffic, I was able to get the vehicle home at a slow rate of speed with heavy brake pumping. Upon inspection in my driveway I was able to determine that a corroded brake line that leads to the rear brakes had burst. The placement of this part on top of the frame rail prevents inspection by owners.

10 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2014

Today my wife took our very good condition well maintained garage kept 2002 GMC Yukon to dunkin donuts to get coffee. She was stopped in the drive thru line when she heard an air sound as her foot on the brake went to the floor, she was able to limp home, about a mile, by pumping the brakes and it was early so nobody was on the road. Indeed the brake line above the fuel tank was broken, I know because I dropped the fuel tank. We were lucky she didn't get in an accident and we weren't on vacation far away. I also flush out the brake lines with new fluid every time I change the brake pads. I know a lot of people with cars much older than ours and no brake line issues. We also had brake line issues with a 2003 GMC Yukon xl. Something needs to be done about this since this is not normal. And this happened when she was stopped in line, not after a hard emergency braking.

11 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2014

While driving our 2002yukon denali with 105,000 miles we had brake failure for the second time. We were towing our 21 foot gulf stream amerilite travel trailer and when the vehicle in front of us stepped on their brakes my husband attempted to begin slowing down. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor, we had no brakes. It is a miracle that we were not killed. This is the second brake line rupture within the past two years since we have owned this vehicle. The vehicle is extemely well maintained. We could have been killed. It has been very expensive to have our vehicle towed twice and repaired. I will be contacting GMC and asking for reimbursement. Our lives and the lives of many others have been put in danger here. Why is their not a recall with so many postings of the this problem? all of the brake lines should be replaced with stainless steel lines that will not rust. I am looking forward to your response prior to contacting an attorney. Thank you.

12 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2014

Traveling at approximately 35mph, applied brakes for upcoming stop sign and brakes failed. Inspection revealed that brake line broke as the result of corrosion to line at rear axle. Mechanic states all brake lines demonstrating unusual amount of rusing, all brake lines replaced. Mechanic states frame will be rusted through soon if not blasted and rustproofed; also states this is a common problem on nearly all gm trucks he sees.

13 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2014

While braking from a speed of 45 mph to stop for a traffic signal, the brakes failed. I was able to engage the parking brake to stop the vehicle several feet past the stop line. Fortunately, no accident resulted from this incident. The vehicle was taken to a local shop where they discovered that the brake line had failed at a 90 degree bend due to corrosion. Upon research, the shop said that a service bulletin had been issued stating that the entire brake line would need to be replaced because it is subject to corrosion at every point where there is a mounting bracket attaching it to the vehicle.

14 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

During routine maintenance on my 2002 Yukon denali, heavy rust/corrosion was first identified on the brake line that runs under the radiator. As I followed it back, more rust/corrosion is visible. They are rusting/corroding in exposed as well as protected areas. Concerned for safety and a potential failure I started to investigate, on line, and found that this issue has affected many trucks and SUV's in and around my model year. I also found that gm is aware of the issue but has failed to initiate a recall. Vehicles of this size are purchased for large families, towing and hauling heavy loads. All the more reason for gm to recognize the potential danger and act accordingly.

15 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2014

Brakes failed as I tried to stop. All brake lines had to be replaced due to corrosion. The vehicle was purchased new and is always kept in a dry garage.

16 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2014

I noticed some fluid under the middle of vehicle and thought it was water but as I was heading to church Sunday night my brake peddle went all the way to the floor, was very disturbing and scary to me but was able to stop and get home safely. Next day in the daylight I check out my fluid and the brake fluid box was completely empty! took to dealership and was informed that brake lines rusted and leaking per say $1500 job to fix. Also, informed that I needed a new water pump too. I just replaced the power steering pump 2 weeks before this occurred. GMC needs to make this a recall immediately before someone gets killed.

17 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2013

Driving on rt 22 in NJ at 55mph when traffic light changed to red and stepped on brakes and the pedal went all the way to the floor. The car only slowed slightly and ended up in the middle of the intersection before it stopped. Lucky that it was in the mid afternoon and the traffic was light because the distance to stop was about 5 times the normal distance and had to use emergency brake to stop the car. There was a sudden failure of the brake line due to corrosion, I had the car inspected by a mechanic, causing the pressure to drop in the system. After the incident I went online and found that this is a problem for years with this make and model. I am a surgeon and find it worrisome that this agency has not recalled this defect and that GMC has not notified consumers of the possibility so they can have the brake lines changed.

18 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2013

I have just submitted a first complaint # 10552595 for defective GMC Yukon brake lines. I am now submitting second complaint for a subsequent incident with the same vehicle. On oct. 5, 2013 I was driving alone to the supermarket in pennsylvania. As I was stopping for an upcoming stop sign, my brakes failed to operate, again! the brake pedal again went completely to the floor. As there was almost no stopping power left, I again pulled the emergency brake and downshifted to low, and partially slowed, and stopped just after the intersection. I was within sight of my auto shop, and I very slowly proceeded through one additional intersection to the shop. When I pulled into his parking lot, I could see the hydraulic brake fluid was running out of the rear brake line onto the pavement! my mechanic now told me that the rear brake lines were rusted to the point of causing a major brake fluid loss. He replaced the rear brake lines with stainless steel tubing and fittings. I had to pay $509. 45 to make this additional brake line repair. Based upon the NHTSA is investigating these dangerous and defective GMC brake lines in the 'rust states' including my home in pennsylvania, the us govt must now force GMC to recall these inferior corrosive brake lines to avoid the chance for fatal accidents. GMC should reimburse me for my costs, now totaling $ 994. 80. This is now the second NHTSA incident complaint I have filed in 2013 for the total failure of my corroded and burst GMC Yukon brake lines. (please note the mileage of my vehicle on 4/19/13 was 132,593 and then on 10/5/13 it was 137,813. ) -[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

19 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2013

Tl-the contact owns a 2002 GMC Yukon. The contact stated while driving approximately 5 mph, the brakes failed the vehicle was taken to and independent mechanic for diagnosis. The mechanic stated that the brake lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle has been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. Kw.

20 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2013

The rear main brake line broke right half into when I had to apply a very hard stop on interstate 64 I was traveling at 65 mph when a small car abruptly changed lanes there wasnt efficent enough space for the car to move in as he moved over I had to hit my brake rather hard to give this idiot enough room to merge in the abs kicked in and the tires squilled I came very very close to rear ending this guy but I had just enough brake to slow my car up without incident after that my brakes went to the floor when I exited the interstate somehow it did stop lucky me. Soon as I saw a store I stoped and purchased 4 cans of brake fluid refilled the resivour and made it home with that. I jacked my Yukon up and saw a very rusty steel line broke off at the fitting it didnt pull out of the fitting it actually broke into and of course fluid was everywhere. This incident could have been a bad diaster there was a lot of traffic on the interstate right at the peak of the day when everyone was leaving work trying to get home. I am thanking my lucky stars I made it home safe. Now I have to figure out the repair part of this whole thing.

21 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2013

Stepped on brake pedal and brakes failed to stop vehicle. Inspected vehicle and noticed rusted brake lines failed. I am the original owner of this vehicle.

22 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2013

On April 19, 2013 I was driving with my daughter in wilmington DE to the amtrak station. Approximately 3 blocks away from arriving, my brakes failed as I attempted to stop at a traffic light. The brake pedal went completely to the floor. As there was almost no stopping power left, I pulled the emergency brake and downshifted to low, and partially slowed, stopped in the last section of the intersection. I pulled to the side of the road and had the car towed to my auto shop. My mechanic told me the front brake lines were rusted to the point of causing a major brake fluid loss. He replaced the brake lines with stainless steel tubing and fittings. I had to pay $485. 35 to make this repair. I now know NHTSA is investigating these dangerous and defective GMC brake lines in the 'rust states' including my home in pennsylvania. The us govt should force GMC to recall these inferior corrosive brake lines to avoid the chance for fatal accidents, and GMC should reimburse me for my costs. I will now file a second NHTSA incident report for a second "rear" brake line failure in oct 2013. -[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

23 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2013

While under vehicle to replace gas filter it had become evident to me that the brake lines where they enter the abs unit were fairly rusted. As I investigated further to areas not easily visible I had discovered that all the hydraulic brake lines are extremely rusted and imminent failure is evident. In mentioning this to a friend he suggest I check on line as he had heard of this problem. I was absolutely taken aback to see how common this failure is on these vehicles and that GMC is aware of it, yet they have never apprised me of this "possible condition"' and that I should take necessary action to prevent failure which could result in serious injury or death ! I have been a mechanic for many years and had worked for gm some years back. I have never observed such deterioration in a vehicle of this age. This vehicle is extremely well maintained in both periodic and preventative maintenance. I do not live by the water, we live in a moderate climate and vehicle is not subject to anything but normal driving conditions. I have (collectible vintage cars) oldest being 36 years old and the lines on all cars look new or in good shape. To my further dissatisfaction I had contacted GMC and they deny any knowledge of this problem or condition. I think all parties concerned should consider the possible catastrophic outcome of this component failure and also take into account the size and weight of these vehicles and the possible secondary consequences in an accident and take immediate remedial action.

24 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2012

In December 2012 we were traveling when my husband went to hit the brakes, they completely gave way and stuck on the bottom of the floor. In panic he tried every maneuver possible as we were coming up on an l curve that quickly led to a stop sign entering a major intersection. As we made the l curve, two motorcyclists were at the light and we were coming straight at them at 40 miles an hour. Making a massive turn and risking flipping the car over, he hooked the truck to the right unto the embankment of the major road barely avoiding killing these two motorcyclist. We drove on the embankment until the car came to a stop. We called a tow truck and he towed us to a MD repair shop. We then received a call from the repair man that the brakes lines were completely rusted out and that we blew the brakes line and instantaneous lost all oil. No brakes left whatsoever. He told me to call the dealer and push for a recall since that much rust was a sign of an issue when the car was made. There was no seal on the under carriage. I did and the gentleman at boyle Buick said not to tow it in to their shop as it would not be covered under warranty as they see it all the time but that gm has never paid for these to be fixed on a car out of warranty and despite this being a constant issue they see- it did not have a recall on it. He even gave us the name of a company that makes stainless steel aftermarket brake lines already bended as that is where they buy them- they see it so often. This company sprung up because so many people had this exact same issue they could make substantial money pre-fabbing these lines. I kept my receipt for these brakes line ($1,235. 00) as I had to believe that someone would eventually hold gm liable for not coating the underside and putting thousands of lives at risk.

25 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

Rear brake line failed while driving. Car towed to van Chevrolet in scottsdale, az. Dealer only replaced one failed line. Approx. 1 year later, front left line failed, again while driving, and was replaced. After inspection all hard brake lines are severely corroded and need replacement.

26 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2012

On October 9th, 2012 I entered my Yukon at approximately 9pm in a parking lot in downtown cincinnati, ohio. I put my foot on the brake pedal and start my vehicle. I shifted into reverse and began backup when I pressed on the brake pedal it went all the way to the floor and never regained any brake pressure. I did manage to get my wife and I home safely. I understand that NHTSA already has an open investigation per following: "in 2010, after receiving owner complaints, the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) initiated a preliminary evaluation of brake failure trends among six million general motors vehicles build between 1999-2003, including the chevy avalanche and silverado, the GMC sierra and some of the automaker's heavy duty trucks. Initially, about 100 owners reported failure of corroded brake lines, resulting in either lengthy stopping distances or crashes. " "the problem has escalated, with more owners reporting brake line failure, and so far gm has not kicked-in repair dollars. In early 2011, NHTSA upgraded the preliminary investigation to an engineering analysis. " from about. Com. While my wife and I did return home safely it was rather terrifying to drive 25 miles with virtually no brakes. Why didn't gm initiate a recall to fix this problem if NHTSA is already aware of the problem. I would like to file a complaint against general motor as we feel they could have put our lives in danger if this had happened in a way that I wasn't aware and had to brake for an emergency. From a cost perspective GMC dealership is charging $2000 replace the corroded brake lines.

27 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2012

Complete brake failure caused by rusted brake lines. When applying brake to shift into drive the pedal went to the floor. Was taken to a near by garage and shown 4 seperate leaks in the lines. Estimate to repair was $1800-2000. Im lucky no-one was injured or killed. After asking friends and family who have similar gm fullsize trucks and suvs around the same year 5 of them reported the same issue which is quite disturbing. One of which was involved in an accident as a result.

28 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2012

2002 denali xl 100. 000 mi sudden brake failure pedal to floor no warnings of any kind. New brake pads and rotors installed 8 months ago upon further inspection after stopping vehicle all hard brake lines were rusted through causing loss of brake fluid.

29 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2012

Rear brake line failed when my wife pulled truck out of driveway. All brake lines rusted very badly.

30 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Brakes failed due to corrosion of the brake line. Braking was not existent as the pedal travels to the floor. Thank god for not being in a busy street and being able to coast to a stop. This is a heavy vehicle and without braking ability it could easily kill people. After adding some brake fluid (most of which leaked through the broken line) there's not even a warning light on to alert of a braking problem despite the fact that the pedal goes to the floor. The other important point to note is that the failure in the line appears to have happened in a part of the line that appears to be inside the car frame which makes it the most protected line from the outside elements. If that's the first line to fail, it would suggest sub standard materials being used in manufacturing these lines.

31 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2011

Unlike many others my Chevrolet mechanic warned me of the corrosion problems they found on my brake lines on my GMC 2002 Yukon, and the need to replace them. This $1,700 repair is excessive, but I could not consider risking failure. We travel on highways close to 1,000 miles per month and occassionally tow a 5,000 pound boat/trailer. I typically buy new cars, maintain them with the dealer and run them as long as I can. I have never seen or heard of such a comprehensive failure. Having only briefly researched this on line and easily finding hundreds of reported failures, I cannot believe that GMC has not been held accountable. A friend has reported to us that both their sierra and Yukon experienced on road failures. I maintain my cars as responsibly as I can, at a cost, but not wanting any highway failures. I hate to think about the aging GMC/chevy truck population that is now driving next to me. Why has GMC not been held accountable.

32 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2011

Brake line failure on my 2002 GMC Yukon denali. All brake lines rusted and one failed without a crash.

33 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2011

Vehicle failed to stop due to brake failure, after pulling over the disabled vehicle a quick inspection revealed rotted brake lines running to the abs control unit which had failed under brake pressure causing immediate loss of braking with no warning or any mil light status prior to failure. All the front brake lines were heavily corroded and all needed replacing before the vehicle was usable.

34 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2011

GMC 2002 Yukon sle, 193,000 milles, experienced a total brake failure, loss of brake fluid, without prior warning lights regarding brake line pressure, function or abs. The loss was attributed to extensively corroded brake lines resulting in a $3000 repair.

35 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2010

When applying brakes, pedal unexpectedly went to floor & barely avoided collision. Had car towed to dealer, notified dealer of brake line failure that NHTSA & gm are aware of, after there for 2 days & dealer not returning our calls, was eventually notified 4 corroded brake lines need replacement at my expense, still waiting for estimate of repair cost going on 3 days. My husband was a mechanic at gm dealers for over 12 years & never seen 1 static brake line rupture nevermind 4 become defective at the same time especially considering the vehicle barely has 60,000 miles on it & has always been well maintained. Dealer was very uncooperative in seeking gm remediation assistance for us or taking any self-initiative anytime to keep us informed, vehicle out of service & has been at dealer for going on 3 days now, after not following up with us nor returning our calls just reached dealer right before closing time & was informed they still cannot locate parts at factory or anywhere else, fact that 4 lines defective simultaneously & still unable to locate parts clearly indicates manufacturing defect. . . No car, no service, no price, no parts, when will it ever end? recommend urgent priority -if not remedied quickly- many lives could be lost!.
