2 Dash Wiring problem of the 2007 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 03/10/2007

There is a problem with the steering wheel mounted radio controls on some 2007 GMC Yukon denali trucks with the six disc cd changer. One of these controls is suppose to allow you to change the disc that is playing to another one of the six that you have loaded into the changer. On some of these trucks the wrong wiring harness was installed when the truck was built along with the wrong software being loaded into the electronic module. This prevents this control from functioning correctly. Instead of changing the disc that is playing, it simple goes to the next song on that same cd. There is already a control on the steering column to do this. When I brought this to the attention of the service manager at the dealership he said at first that the steering wheel control module was bad and then that the radio was defective. Both items were replaced and the problem remains. He then checked some of the other Yukon denalis that he had in stock and told me that on some of these cars the controls worked properly and on some they did not. He then told me about the wiring harness and software problem. Gm's position is that these cars are built properly and they refuse to do anything about it. Page 336 of the owners manual clearly says that this button should change the disc that is playing. I consider this to be a safety problem because now when you want to change the disc you have to take your eyes off the road and look down to the middle of the dashboard and locate a small 1/4" by 1/2" button and push it. This can cause you to drift out of your lane of travel, especially at highway speeds. This, after all, is a primary purpose of steering wheel controls for radios-you can keep your eyes on the road. I hope you will look into this matter and force gm to correct this safety problem.

3 Dash Wiring problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 12/05/2006

I was driving my daughter home from tutoring when I realized the speedometer does not work properly. I happened to be on the interstate at the time so I kept up with the other cars, but going down the streets to our house in the dark made me uncomfortable. Sometimes it sticks at zero and other times it maxs out at 120 mph. The dealer I called said this was a common problem and would cost about $600+ to fix and also it would take a few days.

4 Dash Wiring problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 12/10/2004

Having electrical problems with the vehicle. Seats will move while driving, heater in seats come on with out light indicating that they are on. Air conditioning speeds will vary. There are to many problems. But the main one was putting the car in drive and it would go into reverse.

5 Dash Wiring problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/07/2003

While driving at night the headlights and dash lights flicker off and on. This condition only occurs while traveling at speeds above 35 mph and when hitting a bump or making a curve. This condition is not only distracting, but when driving at night with no other ambient light I am unable to see adequately ahead of my vehicle. I have had drivers ahead of me pull over thinking that I was flashing my lights at them and other drivers get irate believing that I am "bright lighting them". This is a safety issue that appears to be widespread on the denali's with stabilitrak. Gm states that this condition is "normal". I believe that headlights are meant to burn steady and not flicker off and on. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this with the auto manufacturer to mandate a fix before there are injuries attributed to this condition.

7 Dash Wiring problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 01/28/2003

I believe the design of the GMC Yukon posses a great risk of costly repairs and the possiblity of a fatal accident. I took my truck into the dealer because while I was driving the radio went out. I assumed that maybe a fuse had went out. But when attempts were made to replace the blown fuse, those fuses blew also. After taking it to the dealer, I was informed that a shorting of the wiring occurred because soda was spilled in the rear cup holder. This caused the radio, speedometer, heat, etc. . . To go out on the front dash panel in addition to making somethings come on when they were in the off position. Because of the spillage claim from the service department, this I was told was not covered under the bumper to bumper warranty. My problem is this, if a leakage from a cup-holder can cause so much damage, should those wires be so easily exposed? shouldn't there be some type of safety mechinism in place to prevent this from occurring. This vehicle is promoted as a family car, but it doesn't appear to be safe for a family. If the wires are so close to the surface unprotected that soda could go into it from a cup holder, what about a little child hand. I have a twenty month old daughter who rides in a car seat in the rear, she often drinks from a sip-it-cup while back there. Sip-it-cup rarely leak, so how is it possible that an amount great enough to cause this much damage could occur? some sort of safety mechanism needs to be install to prevent contact with these wires. These wires cause quite a bit of systems to fail on the vehicle. What's next ? I hate to imagine that if this occurs again that maybe it won't be the radio that goes out maybe it will be a fire that starts or maybe the entire car might explode. A safety recall is definitely in order.
