GMC Yukon owners have reported 437 problems related to equipment (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of GMC Yukon based on all problems reported for the Yukon.
On multiple occasions the center screen has been non operational when we start the car and just shows a black screen. The volume knob and screen power button are non-responsive. When this occurs the backup camera is inoperable, which is mandatory safety equipment. The hvac also cannot be adjusted which could cause a windshield fogging condition which is a safety concern. The vehicle has been to the dealer 3 times for screen problems and the issue has not been resolved. When this occurs the problem persists for a few ignition cycles or for up to a couple of days and then will start functioning again. We have not been able to determine any specific condition that is causing the failure.

While operating the vehicle, I began to hear a metallic grinding noise originating from the center of the engine compartment. The sound was clearly audible within the cabin. Approximately one mile before the vehicle ultimately failed, the engine began to malfunction. As I slowed to a stoplight, the vehicle started to shake before shutting off abruptly and entering a coasting state. All electrical systems powered down and the vehicle would not restart. Shortly thereafter, heavy smoke began to emit both inside and outside the cabin, visibly coming from the hood and through the air vents. There was also a distinct burning odor. I attempted to restart the vehicle multiple times without success. The dashboard displayed the message: “conditions not suitable to shift. ” due to the vehicle becoming disabled on a curve and posing a safety hazard, I contacted the sheriff’s office for assistance to prevent a potential collision. Upon their arrival, it was noted that the engine compartment and hood area were exceptionally hot, particularly where the smoke was originating. The dealership has since confirmed they have also been unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle has been inspected by the GMC dealer and is currently pending further evaluation by a gm-certified mechanic to determine the root cause. Prior to this incident, there were no warning lights, system messages, or other noticeable symptoms indicating an issue.
My vehicle torque converter repair on my 2020 GMC Yukon is shuddering. Why is this not a recall when there are various Yukons that are experiencing shuddering related to torque converter repair. This should be a recall. The problem has been confirmed by a GMC dealer. There were not warning lamps, no messages, or other symptoms.

On [xxx] brake system failure, service esc, forward collision system unavailable and check engine lights came on the dashboard and the vehicle had no brakes. Taken to dealership and conley GMC advised the main module was burnt out. $1200. 00. Car was “fixed” and sent out. The next morning all the check engine light along with all other failure lights came on after module was replaced. Taken back to dealership and they advised that everything had to be manually programmed which was done and sent out. [xxx] same dashboard errors were up again. Taken back to dealership and they advised they needed to reprogram manually that was done and sent out. The next morning all lights were back on. It was the weekend so they wouldn’t take the car or provide a rental. May 23rd car was taken back to dealership and conley advised the master cylinder was bad and had to order parts. $4300. 00 in repair cost along with 2. 5 week at the dealership and $150. 00 in rental cost. I found online that gm knew of this issue with the 2022 GMC Yukon xl vehicles and a recall was made however this vehicle VIN number was not included in this recall. I notified conley GMC and they stated they were not informed of this issue. I made a claim with gm and told them of this issue and my safety concerns and they advised that because this was not included in the recall that there was nothing they could do and they would not be covering financial assistance or reimbursement and they called this an inconvenience instead of a real safety issue as each time my vehicle had no working brakes. No working brakes causes safety concerns for everyone in the vehicle as well as other vehicles. All work orders are at conley Buick GMC in bradenton, FL. The vehicle experienced repeated failures involving the electronic stability control (esc), traction control system, and check engine system. Warning indicators for the esc, traction control, and check engine illuminated while operating the vehicle. The issue has occurred on two separate occasions. The first incident occurred on may 4, 2026. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection and repair, and the dealership advised that the issue had been corrected. However, the same problem reoccurred on may 7, 2026. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealership service department, and the malfunction was confirmed. The affected components and vehicle are available for inspection upon request. The failure created a significant safety concern because the esc and traction control systems are critical safety features designed to assist with vehicle stability, traction, and driver control, particularly during emergency maneuvers or adverse road conditions. The warning indicators raised concerns that the vehicle could unexpectedly lose stability assistance, traction management, or engine performance while driving. This placed the driver and others at risk because the vehicle’s ability to respond safely during normal or emergency driving conditions could have been compromised. The repeated recurrence of the issue, even after dealership repair attempts, raises concern regarding the reliability and effectiveness of the corrective action performed.
I was traveling with my family on the ohio turnpike. We were traveling west in our 2023 GMC Yukon denali when we lost all propulsion and the engine seized. There was no warning lights or other symptoms prior to this incident on may 3, 2026. In fact, I had the vehicle in for the prescribed recall to test the engine for the known defect earlier in 2026. The vehicle passed that test and was given the upgraded oil change to presumably prevent the engine failure in the future. It did not work. Our safety and others on the turnpike were at risk while we were traveling at highway rates of speed with sudden loss of all propulsion. The vehicle was towed that evening to local gm dealer - yark chevy in [xxx] . Upon inspection on may 5, 2026, the dealership informed me the engine had seized and would be replaced by gm. They were unable to provide a timeline for this repair. I have the tow expense of $260. 70 and now the uncertainty of when I might have a vehicle back. The safety of my family and all others traveling the ohio turnpike that date were at significant risk. The vehicle remains at yark chevy in perrysburg, ohio available for inspection upon request. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The back hatch would not open while the car was on and in park. Upon reaching in without being in the car, we turned it off, and it engaged reverse on its own, causing it to reverse immediately almost causing terminal harm to myself and my family. It careened into the woods with us unable to stop it due to the immediate speed. No one was in the vehicle, it was solely self propelled. We have a video of the path it took and the damage it caused. When the car wrecked, even when turned off, the lights and windshields wipers engaged by themselves.

The failure is heat-related and intermittent: the screen functions on cool days, and on hot days it fails the vast majority of the time, unpredictably, after the vehicle heat-soaks in the sun. When it fails, the entire screen goes dark and I lose the backup camera and surround-view cameras, all hvac/climate controls, audio, navigation, and most secondary controls. Steering, brakes, and engine are unaffected. This creates two safety hazards. First, loss of the rearview camera image eliminates rear visibility when backing — the exact risk fmvss 111 is intended to prevent — raising the chance of a backover crash. Second, loss of all climate control in extreme heat endangers occupants in north carolina summer temperatures, and a blank, unresponsive screen is a driver distraction. The panoramic sunroof on my 2023 GMC Yukon denali ultimate xl spontaneously exploded while driving westbound on I-20 on March 13. There was no impact from road debris, no vehicles ahead, no overpass, and no external cause. The failure sounded like an explosion or gunshot. Tempered glass shattered with the sunroof in the closed position, showering the interior with glass fragments. Five occupants were in the vehicle at the time. No injuries occurred, but the sudden explosive noise and shower of glass created an extreme distraction and safety hazard while operating the vehicle at highway speed. The incident could easily have caused a loss of vehicle control on the interstate. The component that failed is the factory-installed panoramic power sunroof glass, standard equipment on the denali ultimate trim. The vehicle was taken to lugoff Chevrolet for inspection. The dealer confirmed the glass failure and submitted a request to gm for warranty or goodwill coverage. Gm offered to cover only 10% of the repair cost, characterizing the failure as an out-of-warranty wear issue despite the spontaneous nature of the defect. There were no warning signs, cracks, chips, warning lamps, or any indication of a problem prior to the failure. The sunroof was closed at the time. The vehicle has been dealer-maintained with no modifications to the sunroof or roof structure. This is a known industry-wide defect. Nhtsa has previously investigated spontaneous sunroof shattering and documented over 4,000 complaints. Gm has acknowledged awareness of this issue in other gm vehicles and previously issued corrective actions for sunroof glass on the Buick regal and Chevrolet cruze. Other GMC Yukon owners have filed NHTSA complaints describing identical failures. The failed sunroof glass and vehicle are available for inspection upon request.
The onstar module of my 2023 GMC Yukon has failed. This is a wide spread issue with recent model GMC's. There are thousands of reports of the same thing happenings. When an onstar module fails, the vehicle loses its safety features. No lane departure, no collision detection or pre-collision braking, no critical system checks. Even the gas and mileage components stop working correctly.
First incident: when driving my vehicle the entire infotainment center went black for a few minutes. Second incident: infotainment center has frozen multiple times. Third: infotainment center glitches last incident: a message came up saying to service the infotainment center.

Gateway system module failed during the l87 recall service. The major l87 recall (ecm update) is a major, high-load software update that frequently causes the gateway module to "brick" or stop communicating during the update process resulting in failed module immediately following the service. (TSB) speak to this, the l87 recall is a safety-critical repair, a failure of a module directly caused by this repair should be covered under a recall warranty or gm warranty. Safety can be affected as warning lights will not work due to this failure. Timeline of events. As soon as warranty service was completed before leaving bay lights were not working like onstar etc, app wouldnt connect to car, 1-2 hours after leaving service engine light came on in car. Never had an engine light on before. Took back to dealer who said it was a computer issue they corrected it. 2 hours later engine light was back on. My car has been at the dealer since Monday when they called to say the gsm had internal failure and wanted to charge me to replace it despite this internal failure being in response to the warranty service that was provided, there are technical service bulletins about this issue, this has been a known issue with gm vehicles, my timeline shows strong evidence that the failure is a direct result of the recall repair. There is gm techlink documentation that these modules can be ruined if the update process creates a high load. Gm needs to extend the gsm repair/recall or extend coverage for this repair when this happens. This is just another thing gm is not taking responsibility for.
When initially turning the vehicle on for the day and turning on the heater, the cabin fills up with exhaust fumes odor. This also happens while the car is idling and not moving. Have taken it to the dealership and they do not know how to proceed or what is wrong with it.
I am submitting this complaint to report a safety defect involving a 2026 GMC Yukon xl at4 equipped with the gm brembo brake upgrade. The vehicle is sold as equipped with a full-size spare tire; however, the spare tire/wheel supplied cannot be mounted due to interference from the brake calipers. This incompatibility was discovered only after a flat tire event on [xxx], during which the vehicle could not be safely returned to service. The brembo brake upgrade is a gm-designed option that is installed by the dealer in all cases. Despite this, the vehicle was delivered with emergency equipment that is unusable in the event of a flat tire. Gm has acknowledged the incompatibility and relies on a warning label placed beneath the vehicle, rather than providing a compatible spare or disclosure at the point of sale. This defect resulted in a prolonged roadside emergency involving an elderly passenger and a failure of manufacturer-provided roadside assistance. I believe this condition affects all vehicles equipped with the brembo brake upgrade and represents a systemic safety issue involving emergency preparedness and disclosure. Supporting documentation and a detailed incident narrative are available upon request. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
In the 2026 Yukons, almost all physical buttons have been replaced by the giant center touchscreen. When starting my vehicle, about a third of the time the screen will not come on, and can’t be turned back on by any means. It will randomly come back on after a few more trips/restarts. This renders several critical systems inoperable. All hvac does not work, defrosters aren’t available, back up cameras and parking assist is not available, and control of any navigation functions or options (ie heated/cooled seats) are not possible. There are no physical buttons for these items, so there are no other options. Voice commands do not function properly when the screen is black, so no option there. After my third visit to the dealership and an open case with gm, they are finally authorizing a screen replacement. We will see if this fixes it. However, my previous explanations from gm pointed to a nebulous future software release, with no date or detail.
Post-recall 25v274 ( & ea25007, ea25001) exhaust intrusion with carbon monoxide poisoning hazard following the complete engine replacement under gm recall n252494000, my vehicle has developed a severe and persistent exhaust intrusion that allows toxic exhaust fumes, including carbon monoxide (CO), to enter the passenger cabin. Co levels have measured a peak of 83 ppm and consistent reading between 20-37 over multiple tests. Pattern of post-recall exhaust system failures vehicle has been in for service 6 times, over 100 days, as part of the engine replacement plus (metal found in the oil pan). Since recall, the vehicle has had an exhaust smell and noise rattle issue with the following exhaust system components deemed failed and been replaced: 1. Radiator cap (leaking onto exhaust) 2. Exhaust muffler (replaced twice - June 2025 and August 2025) 3. Exhaust clamps (leaking) 4. Left exhaust manifold (warped) critical finding: despite replacement of virtually the entire exhaust system, the defect persists. This suggests a fundamental design or installation defect related to the engine replacement procedure, not isolated component failures. Documented carbon monoxide levels: between January 30 and February 3, 2026, I conducted 15+ tests using a professional-grade klein tools et180 carbon monoxide meter. Results: • peak reading: 83 ppm • multiple readings: 40-72 ppm sustained for 6+ minutes directly at my [xxx] daughter's car seat position • testing method: vehicle started via remote start, CO meter placed in cabin, readings recorded over 10-15 minute periods health impacts to family: • wife and [xxx] daughter consistently experience dizziness, headaches, and nausea when riding in vehicle • daughter now refuses to ride in vehicle because it makes her feel sick • symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning independent service station verification on January 30th confirmed "vehicle is dangerous to operate with children inside and needs immediate service. On January 24, 2026, my wife was driving the vehicle we purchased in may 2025 from ziegler GMC in lincolnwood, illinois. While traveling on the highway in WI the vehicle suddenly lost power without warning. She was traveling with our [xxx] son at the time and was able to safely maneuver the vehicle off the highway onto an exit ramp. Despite multiple attempts, the vehicle would not restart. She contacted me and arranged for a tow. We waited approximately four hours for roadside assistance before the vehicle was towed to the nearest GMC dealership, located roughly one mile from where the breakdown occurred. Several days later, the dealership completed diagnostics and informed us that the engine required full replacement. At that time, no replacement vehicle was provided. Approximately one week later, we were finally issued a loaner vehicle. As of today, the vehicle has remained in the shop continuously since January 24. On February 23, we were informed that the necessary parts had only just arrived. There is still no estimated completion date for the repair. The vehicle is covered under both the manufacturer’s warranty and an extended warranty. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Driving along on an empty road and my panoramic sunroof back glass exploded it sounded like a gunshot going off. Could have caused a wreck it was so loud and scary.
I noticed vehicle jerked a couple times when it shifted gears while driving. Shortly after, reduced power mode light came on. Vehicle did not shift past lower gears and had no reverse. Took to local dealership, they said it needed a transmission valve body overhaul. This is a known problem with 2022 GMC Yukon xl, however, they said it was not associated with my VIN. This cost me almost $2,000 out of pocket to repair.
I have a 2021 GMC Yukon with 74,000 miles I was recently told I need a new transmission. I am am trying to understand why a car that is 5 years with all the services done by lehman GMC in north miami would need a new transmission they have been servicing this car and no one mention anything breaking down of need of repair until now. I spoke with the service manager franklin and he stated to me another client had the same issue and he flush the transmission just like I am doing today and it only worked for a short time and afterwards he had to replace the transmission. I feel this is a problem with these models and GMC don't want to address it. They just want the customer to pay for the repairs. Now I spoke to the manager and the salesman that sold me the car and nicely told me he was sorry and he could get us out of this into a 2026. Now why would I buy a new car if they cannot get the 2021 right. I have included my invoice below I feel some one should look into this I feel this is a recall matter and GMC is trying to pass the buck. Thank you [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
On star module quit working in our Yukon, which in turn makes it useless to have any of the safety features. On star and gm know this is an ongoing problem, but no recall has been issued. Neither company will repair unless an $1100 fee is paid. Why install on star if you know it will malfunction. Since there is a monthly service fee I think they need to make sure the vehicle has the correct parts.
The vehicle shifted into neutral while driving, locked out gear selection, triggered a transmission warning, and now will not restart.
Traction control system esc system suddenly and without warning, multiple warning lights started flashing including check engine. The vehicle lost power and traction. There was a loud knocking and metallic whining sound. The vehicle began to vibrate and struggled to move forward and felt like the wheels were slipping. The loss of these functions was alarming because it was dark, we were in a construction zone, and my 15-year old daughter was driving having recently earned her driver's permit. The car following us almost rear ended us. It was such an abrupt engine failure it scared me and my daughter.
Engine failed 1400 miles from home on 6. 2l engine - days after getting l87 engine loss of propulsion recall service. Recall service completed on 12/1/2025 - cap and oil change done - full engine failure on 12/22/2025. 12/1/2025 - l87 engine recall service done at GMC dealership - quincy IL 12/16/2025- check engine light came on - went to same dealership - cleared it told me I was fine to drive across country 12/22/2025 - full engine failure on GMC Yukon denali.
I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the vehicle I purchased from your dealership. Despite my expectations at the time of purchase, the vehicle has not met the standards that were represented to me. This letter is intended to address my concerns regarding the vehicle’s features, undisclosed recalls, and significant mechanical and safety issues discovered immediately after delivery. I discovered—through the GMC mobile application, not through the dealership—that the vehicle had two to three active recalls at the time I received it, including recalls involving the engine and transmission. I was never informed of these recalls by the dealership prior to or at the time of sale, which is extremely concerning. After discovering the recalls myself, I scheduled a service appointment. I was informed that the recalls were addressed and marked as resolved in GMC springdale. Despite the recalls being cleared, only two days later, the vehicle began experiencing issues. The screen displayed warning messages, and the vehicle developed a vibration, to the point that it became unsafe to drive. They are changing us $820+tax I was forced to use roadside assistance, it hasn't been a month yet and the dealer are refusing to cover the damage. I have been calling but they said they are busy or they use somebody else to speak.
I bought my 2023 Yukon denali ultimate on or around August 9 2023, and I bought it brand new. On may 28 2024, around 30k miles, I was on the highway and could no longer accelerate. I luckily got myself into the breakdown lane before my car shut down & lost power, ended up being towed to the closest dealership. After 18 days at the dealership, I finally had my car back with a "new engine". Fast forward to November 25, 2025, I was on the highway again, my dash lit up telling me to "press start". As I figured that was not a good idea while driving in the fast lane on the highway, I did not. In a panic I got myself over to the breakdown lane where my car turned off. This time (November 2025), I still had power, but no car turnover. After 6 days of my car sitting at the dealership, they finally had the time to look at the issue. The dealership did the recall and got the car started, but the car still had a funny sound that the mechanics didn’t like , so they were waiting to hear back from higher up people as to what to do. Today I got the call that they will be replacing the engine for a second time and I will not have my car back until the first week of January. There were zero warning lamps, zero symptoms, nothing. I am lucky that the highway wasn’t too busy in that moment, because there were many 18 wheelers on the road that day, and one almost swerved into my car missing it by about two feet while my dead car sat in the breakdown lane. Yes I called the state police, yes one trooper kindly pulled behind me to ask if I was safe and had a tow on the way. But that truck that nearly plowed into my dead car could have prevented me from picking my [xxx] [xxx] [xxx] daughters up from school, forever . To say that I am disgusted with gm, is an understatement. They’re risking lives. I should not fear for my life, my kids lives in a new, "safe" vehicle. No pun intended, but this is highway robbery. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Driving out a town 400 miles away, with a young passenger in my car on hwy 459 in rush hour traffic, I started hearing a slight ticking sound then moved into a full blown knock on my drivers side ( I recorded it). Within minutes, my oil light came on and my dash notification reading "engine overheating idle" with the knocking really load. I had to cross 3 lanes to traffic quickly to get to the shoulder of the road, which was not a safe place. I smelled smoke and cut the the engine off. I popped the hood to see that there was now no coolant (that is all I knew to look for). I immediately called onstar roadside assistance. 2 hours later, I was towed to a local hotel room. Car completely dead. Not lights, couldn't lock it, nothing. I had to pay a large fee (almost $2k) to have my car towed back to nc from al not to mention having rent a rental car to get us home. The car is now at a GMC dealership in monroe nc. Of course the powertrain extended warranty doesn't cover the battery replacement, belt replacement and water pump replacement so now I'm out of pocket $1300 just to get those install to be able to try and start the engine to further diagnose if my I have complete engine failure and without transportation.

I own a 2021 GMC Yukon denali xl with approximately 81,000 miles. On 4 separate occasions, after coming to a complete stop in traffic and then attempting to accelerate, the vehicle violently jerks and shifts itself into park. I am not pressing the brake when this occurs. I must manually shift the vehicle back into drive in order to continue moving. This happens so fast, that I am only able to see a red outlined box that intermittantly flashes on the dashboard but I cannot see what it says before it disappears. The incident feels as though the vehicle has been struck from behind due to the abrupt force. This has occurred more than once and creates a dangerous situation in traffic, particularly when vehicle are behind me. The vehicle has been taken to a GMC dealership, which has serviced the vehicle since 2021. The dealership reports they were unable to duplicate the condition after driving approximately 60 miles and therefore cannot perform a repair. This issue remains unresolved. Given that the vehicle is shifting into park while in motion or during acceleration, I believe presents a significant safety hazard.
Service trailer braking system alert intermittent & ongoing for months. Electrical fault? possible fuse problem? stranded with kids because car wouldn’t start. Later conducted diagnostics on battery and starter, both normal.

I bought a car in early 2024 ive had it for 1. 5y I recently went to trade it in for something more suitable for me and they ran a carfax and mileage rollback popped up and I had no clue to begin with. They rolled back 100,000 miles on the vehicle. They’re blaming the finance company but they can’t because the finance company never had the vehicle in there possession.
