36 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2011

1999 Honda Accord. Consumer states vehicle had a power surge and rpm, speedometer and oil gauges went to zero then flickered back on the consumer stated after having the distributor replaced, the same problem happened again one day later, only the vehicle stalled. The consumer stated with no where to pull off, she placed the gear in neutral, tapped the reverse and completely damaged the reverse gear. The repairs were made to the vehicle. However, the vehicle stalled again. The consumer did some research and discovered a recall, but it was supposedly fixed once before. An inspection revealed the ignition switch was faulty. The consumer stated there was nothing ever wrong with the distributor or the reverse gear, but it was the ignition switch that was the problem all along.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning but was able to restart the vehicle without difficulty. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 03v423000 (electrical system: ignition switch) and took the vehicle to the dealer. The contact was told by the dealer that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 139,000. Kmj.

38 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2011

Our 1999 Honda Accord ex automatic is part of the recall program on faulty electric ignition switch. So sometime in oct. 2002 the electric ignition switch was replaced at robertson Honda in north hollywood, California. No such stalling problem has occured until December, 2010. But on jthe morining of January 2011 the car stalled in the freeway with four passengers iin it. . Everyone is so fearful because the freeway is busy with cars driving at 65 miles an hour. The car has approximately 172,000 miles at that time. This incident happens again four times within the span of 6 months after January 2011 on the freeway and on surface street . I broughjt the car to robinson Honda at north hollywood on January 30, 2011 for service telling the service manager that the problem is exactly the same before the recall and that it may still be covered by the NHTSA recall program but he said if it was fixed before then you are not eligible for the second free service. At 2:30pm , I called craig lavoie for status of my car but he said they are not doing anything because they couldn't duplicate the problem. I am suspicious they did not do anything because I mentioned to him it may be covered by the recall. I told him to replace the elec. Ignition switch and I will pay for it. They did in a flash for $180. I place a complaint at Honda corporate office at torrance, California in August 2, 2011. I was assigned a case manager to mediate the issue but still yet to receive the outcome of my complaint. The car has registered with 180,326 miles at the time of the service.

39 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

Engine cuts out while driving. Radio, lights and other electrical devices remain on. No check engine light appears; however a green key symbol light does appear on the dash after the cut-out. Issue has recurred three times so far. Mechanic states issue is due to ignition switch and that the issue appears to be as described by NHTSA 02v120000. However, Honda states that my vehicle's VIN is not covered by the recall and recommended contacting NHTSA for resolution.

40 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact made a stop and restarted the vehicle. The failure recurred frequently. The vehicle was taken to dealer for inspection who determined that the failure was related to the ignition switch. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign id number: 05v025000 (electrical system: ignition: switch), but the recall only covered the interlock function. The vehicle was repaired under the recall however, the ignition switch also needed to be replaced and was not covered under the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 180,000. The current mileage was 199,000.

41 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

At times, engine suddenly dies out when coming to a stop (traffic light; stop sign). The car has automatic transmission. I can easily put the car in "park" again and restart with no problem. The car has 80k miles and is well maintained. After a few of these scary experiences, took the car to a local Honda dealership in atlanta GA. Cost of $160 (description - routine maintenance - bg fuel service all - cleaned throttle body). Assumed this would have corrected the issue. I was wrong. In two more occasions - had the same problem again. The last time it happened, the car suddenly stopped while slowing down to stop at a "stop sign". The car started again (takes a while in an automatic transmission though). I was lucky a car behind me had enough space to stop. This time, I researched the web and noticed many owners have similar problems with Honda Accord 1999. I was one of the lucky ones though (the car had not yet stopped while driving in a busy traffic). At 20,374 mile, the same Honda dealership performed the "2002 safety recall - Accord ignition switch" - "electrical ignition switch fp number : 3510-s84-305 (switch e 79530)", this was done on 12/03/02. Took the car back to the Honda dealership on 10/28/11. I asked the service technician to look into the 2002 ignition switch recall ; customer complaints & what else was performed to correct it. I don't believe this service adviser was aware of this major safety issue with Honda Accords (1999). This time the dealership surprised me with replacing ignition switch again. This was a $405 repair. The fp number is 35130-s84-a01 (switch s 79530). I assume there are two parts in the ignition switch. I am not certain why the 2002 safety recall did not advice the dealerships to replace both parts (e & s switches). The dealership advised me the "s" switch is behind the ignition switch.

42 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2011

The NHTSA should be aware that Honda has failed to notify many Accord owners of a potentially dangerous problem, namely, an ignition switch that may cause their cars to quit at any time and at any speed. Nhtsa recall 02v120000 of may 16, 2002 included the 1997-1999 Accords; however, Honda claims many of these Accords, including ours, were excluded due to their vins and will not replace the switches without charge. Our 1999 Accord ex recently experienced this problem and examination of the old switch (photos included in a letter to the NHTSA) showed that deterioration of the switch contacts caused the switch to reach a temperature sufficient to melt the solder on the v+ white wire/switch bond. Replacement of the switch remedied the problem. When the switch fails the car quits immediately and the driver is left with no option other than to pull to the side of the road -- which at high speed and in congested traffic may lead to a serious/deadly collision.

43 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2011

As you are driving the engine just shuts off. After pulling over the engine will restart most of the time. The problem appears to be in the ignition switch.

44 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

1999 Honda Accord. Consumer writes in regards to a safety recall notice for an ignition interlock the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer to have the recall repair completed. However, the dealer encountered a problem when the key became stuck in the ignition and they had to wait for a shop foreman to research the issue. The dealer informed the consumer that since the key was stuck in the ignition, they were going to charge him 2 hours of labor to diagnose the problem. The consumer stated that should have been included in the recall since the problem was apparently related to them trying to fix the ignition. The dealer informed the consumer there was a pre-existing issue with the shifter and that the 2 free hours no longer applied. The dealer later contacted the consumer and informed him the cost would be $650 to replace the shifter mechanism.

45 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2011

After driving about 20 miles in mixed city/highway traffic and without warning while traveling approximately 35 mph in heavy city traffic the engine cut off, tachometer dropped to zero and immobilizer system indicator flashed. Engine started immediately when key was turned to "start" position. Same thing occurred about a mile later and a third time 23 days later when accelerating on a rural four lane highway after operating for approximately five minutes. Quick action to restart the engine averted a potential rear end collision. Replacement of the electrical portion of the ignition switch scheduled for replacement Mar. 10, 2011. Will save faulty part.

46 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

I was driving down a freeway w/ my 6 yr grand daughter in backseat, when all of a sudden ( no warning ) my car died. We almost were rear ended. When it died, the lights on the dash flickered on and off about 4 xs. Mech state ig switch burn out cuz 2 much amp goin thr system. Honda refused to do anything even thou ig switch was on recall but not my VIN number. Several attempts/calls were made to Honda-said no. The ignition switch that was taken out, well it is quite obvious there is too much of something going thru causing the melting of all the stuff I can see. I have the old switch. I had the mech give it to me. When he told me it was switch I asked if there was a recall so he checked and yes so I called Honda. The woman I spoke to was very mean/snotty saying my VIN was not on the list. So, I had to go ahead and pay out of my pocket at the dealership my insurance comp towed to for fixing. If Honda was going to fix it, I would have had it taken on to a Honda dealer. The poor ways I was treated on the phone, I don't think much of Honda anymore. Mech said Honda has not made a switch yet that will handle the amperage that is going to it so this one will only last 4-5 years give or take. We could have been killed when the car died.

47 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving 55 mph in increment weather. The contact lost power steering and the vehicle crashed into a pole. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. Prior to the failure, the dealer replaced the ignition switch under the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch). The dealer stated that the failure was due to the ignition defect addressed in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired a second time. The failure mileage was 153,000 and the current mileage was 157,000. The VIN was unavailable.

48 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

I have had incidents with my Honda Accord for months. Many times, particularly when the weather was extremely hot, it would take as long as 15 minutes to get it started. But worse, it would just simply die when I was driving it. Sometimes this was in my neighborhood which wasn't scary, but a couple of times it was in major traffic and once on a busy highway. I took it to my Honda dealer (where it has been regularly serviced since the day I bought it!) and explained the issue. They charged me $100 to tell me they couldn't find anything wrong with it. My sister found this website and thought it could have been the ignition switch. It continued to have issues, so I took it to an independent mechanic and told him to check the ignition switch. He charged me $40 to tell me there was nothing wrong. I took it to another independent mechanic who said the ignition switch looked fine, but maybe it was the fuel switch. He replaced that and I still had issues. I took it back to the last guy and told him to replace the ignition switch anyway. The car feels great! it hasn't run this well in a year. My point is that if you have these symptoms, and they tell you it looks fine, insist on the switch replacement. This guy charged me $180 (and that included an oil change) and it would have saved me time, money and some very scary situations had Honda done that to begin with!.

49 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2011

While driving down the high way, my car just turned off and had to pull over the right side of the road. Luckily it was not busy, but it has been happening a lot lately. That means I don't have a car. I looked online and they have a faulty ignition switch. At first I changed the main relay to a brand new one from Honda. But it still did the same thing, till it didn't start again.

50 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

Consumer writes in regards to a Honda switch recall the consumer stated there was a recall on his vehicle to replace the ignition switch because it was defective and it could cause the engine to stop. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer only to be told the part had already been replaced. Therefore, they were no longer claiming any responsibility. The consumer had to pay for the repairs.

51 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2010

52 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2010

Starting in April of 2010, my car started stalling at "random" times; there was no rhyme or reason to it and no noticeable associated symptoms. The car would simply stall or completely cut out on me in an instant, whether I was idling, stopping at a stop sign or light, or driving down the road, most commonly when I was driving in the city in traffic, but three times when I was driving 70mph on the interstate. Most often after it stalled and I put the car in park, it would start again immediately. However, it was also common for the car to stall and for it to take 5-6 tries for it to restart. This stalling occurred nearly daily, most often once but sometimes 3-4 times each day. I took the car into an auto repair shop twice, in may and June 2010, to have this stalling looked into, but they were unable both times to find anything wrong with it. I finally took it in a 3rd time on October 11, 2010 and they told me that I have a faulty ignition switch.

53 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. The contact was driving 25 mph when the vehicle stalled without any warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several minutes. The failure mileage was 205,000.

54 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2010

While driving the vehicle, the engine just quits. There is no stuttering, stalling, or engine misfires, it quietly just quits. The radio, heater fan, brake lights still work but not the signal lights nor the dashboard indicators. After a few hours troubleshooting, I realized that if I wiggle the lower of five wires on the ignition switch, the instrument panel indicator will return to functioning properly and the car will then be able to start. While the engine is running, if I wiggle the same wire, the engine and instrument panel will not operate.

58 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2010

I have a 99 Accord ex. I have been having problems with the car stalling at any speed . After seeing all the problems online and their own tech's telling me it is an ignition switch , I thought they would help. I have contacted Honda many times and they were no help at all. I know of the recall on the ignition switch but they said my Accord is not on the list. I have worked for Honda for 15 years and always backed there cars but that didn't matter to them, I guess that's how they treat their employees. I'd rather have a Toyota .

60 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Engine to stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. Upon investigation, I discovered on the internet that there was a recall notice issued for this exact item in June 2002 (and the recall item was fixed by previous owner in October 2002. The dealer and Honda of America both told me that if the recall had been completed, they are no longer responsible, even though evidently the repair has the same defect originally identified in the recall. Driving on highway at 75 miles an hour - check engine light flashed - all dashboard lights flashed and car died. . . Barely made it to side of the road without getting hit. Car was towed, diagnosis was bad ignition switch. I just searched web and found there was a recall in 2002.

63 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2010

While driving on I-75 south bound all of sudden my car (1999 Honda Accord) stalled, immediately I put the car in neutral and moved to the shoulder, I realized this was an issues with my ignition switch. I could hold the ignition key and drive. I called a tow truck and he took me to the nearest mechanic who said there was a recall on the ignition switch. He gave me temporary fix that would get me home and I could talk to my Honda dealer. The issue is if there was a recall and if was fixed (next my dealer told me that my recall was fixed) why did it occur again. Was the fix done during the recall was not good enough? is there a really an problem with ignition switch? I had the car fixed at the dealer again.

64 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2010

65 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

Occasionally the car has died while driving on city streets or interstate. The tach drops immediately to zero and I think all or most of the dash lights come on like they would with the key in the start position. When I try to restart the car, it starts and runs for about one second then dies again. Sometimes, it will take four or more attempts before it will keep running like normal. It does this when the car is cold or hot and has done this in intersections. There was a recall for this problem (NHTSA no. 02v120000) for 1999 Honda Accords, but Honda says my VIN was not included, therefore I am not covered.

68 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2010

As I was driving in the fast lane on the highway late last night my Honda Accord lost all electrical power for about 15 seconds and then turned back on in gear. During this time I had no engine power. As I was pulling off the freeway this occurred again for about 20 seconds. Since taking the car to the dealer this morning this problem occurred 3 more times. The dealer seemed familiar with the problem and recognized it as being related to a 2002 recall of the 1999 Accord v6. The dealer then replaced the wiring associated with the ignition switch that had previously been fixed in the recall. This seems to have corrected the problem.

69 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2010

My car shut off three times on the way home. The green light on the dashboard displaying a key symbol came on each time it shut off. I called Honda and they said that there are no recalls.
