38 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 08/25/2002

Engine check light came on for the second time within a year. The first time I was told that the computer was too sensitive and they had to order a new computer - wait was approx 3-4 months. This happened at 3600 miles and was covered under warranty. Less than a year later the engine check light came on, and the dealer told me it was oxygen sensor and it had to be replaced. The emission control system is unreliable for this to happen within 53k miles.

39 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 08/06/2002

This problem effects emissions, which the government has mandated an extension on Honda warranties to 8 year/ 80,000 miles. This appears to be a fairly common problem. One to which the Honda corporation fails to respond. There appears to be either a faulty indication of emission problems or parts that are truly defective - wearing out before their normal life expectancy.

40 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/09/2001

The contact owns a 2000 Honda Accord. The contact noticed that the engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument control panel. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that there was exhaust gas recirculation and clogging. The manufacturer issued technical service bulletin number 626561 (engine and engine cooling:exhaust system:emission control:gas recirculation valve (egr valve)). The failure exceeded the constraints for the voluntary warranty extension campaign; therefore, the manufacturer would not assist with the repairs. She also noticed that the air bag warning indicator would sporadically illuminate on the instrument control panel, which indicated that the passenger side front air bag was inoperative. On one occasion, a vehicle driving approximately 80 mph crashed into the front passenger side of the contact's vehicle. The front passenger side air bag failed to deploy. The occupant sustained moderate injuries. The manufacturer would not assist. The failure mileage was 1,000 and current mileage was 90,000.

41 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 05/16/2001

Regarding oil fire danger in Honda crvs and Accords. I owned a 2001 Honda Accord coupe that had a similar problem to the problem discovered in Honda crvs. This affects millions of Hondas and is a fundamental design flaw. The oil filter is located directly over a flexible, woven-metal hose that is part of the exhaust system. The hose is porous. When the filter is changed, the hose -- which is often extremely hot when one pulls into a service station for an oil change -- must be covered with a leak-proof material so that oil doesn't drip onto the flexible hose. If oil gets into the woven metal of the hose, it is nearly impossible to get out -- the only practical option is to let it burn/bake out. Many new Honda owners experience a strong oil odor after getting their oil changed for the first time -- this is the symptom of the problem. Anyone experiencing such an odor is at risk of fire, depending on how much oil dripped onto that hose. My mechanic cleaned off the excess oil with a rag, but some odor of burning oil remained for more than 1,000 miles. Honda knows about this problem and advises its service techs to cover the hose when they change the filter. But this is not known outside of the Honda community, so people who change their own oil, oil-changer chains and local garages generally don't know about this problem. (consumers then think that they got poor service from the non-Honda garage, which encourages them to bring the car to a dealership the next time and pay high rates for oil changes. ) Honda owners whose cars have this design can avoid the problem by having the pipe covered during the oil change -- but it is difficult to access the area when changing your own oil. Honda could correct the problem by installing an aluminum sheath over the flexible pipe to protect it against dripping oil. If oil fell on the sheath, it could still smell for a while, but the risk of fire would be greatly reduced. Thank you.

43 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/11/2000

Once engine is warm, exhaust fumes and raw fuel get into cab. While sitting in traffic consumer feels dizzy. Engine has to be shut off. It is very unhealthy to breath. The dealer could not duplicate the problem after performing short and long term test, fuel pressure check, valve timing check and valve clearance check.

44 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 05/01/2000

Consumer took vehicle to the dealer due to smoke coming from the exhaust during acceleration, the dealer could not find any problems, the vehicle was taken back a second time in which the dealer removed the heads and found that there was excessive sludge in the engine in which the engine would need replaced, the dealer would not make repairs under warranty.

45 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 02/09/2000

In July 1998, I purchased a 1998 Honda Accord v6 ex. In February 2000 the first problem with the engine check and egr defect occurred. The problem was resolved with the replacement of the intake manifold and repositioning of the pcv valve and hose in Accordance with Honda recall instructions and resetting the "check engine" light indicator at no cost to me. Service occurred at dealer. In April 2000, the second problem with the egr valve as manifested by the "check engine" light occurred. The problem was resolved by replacement of the pcv hose in Accordance with Honda recall instructions and resetting the "check engine" light indicator at no cost to me. Service occurred at dealer. In October 2000, the third occurrence of the egr valve failure occurred. This problem was resolved by cleaning the egr port and valve. This was performed at a cost of $66 plus tax. Service occurred at dealer. In January 2001, a related occurrence of the egr problem occurred with an idle air controller (iac) motor failing. The egr port and valve were not checked, however the symptoms of the problem were resolved by replacement of the iac motor and clearing of the check engine light indicator. This resulted in a cost to me of $226. 69. Service occurred at dealer. In November 2001, I was sent a notice by american Honda concerning the egr failures and extending the warranty to 80,000 miles. Service occurred at dealer. In may 2002, the fourth egr problem occurred with the check engine light indicating a problem. The problem was diagnosed to be the egr valve failure and the catalytic converter failure. This repair has been estimated to be $800. 00. Honda?s district service manager has denied the claim, since the failure occurred at 81,000 miles, it has been considered to be out-of-warranty by Honda and therefore repairs would be at my cost. Service occurred at dealer in tucson, az. As a further point, Honda has denied all claims for work done under warranty.

48 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1996 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 01/01/1999

There is a rattle from the exhaust system at 2000 rpm's, which appears to cause a delay in acceleration. The service tech informed me Honda is aware of the problems but feels that it doesn't warrant repair at their cost.

50 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 10/25/1997

Design of the oil filter (location) which is over exhaust system and catalytic converter allows oil to be released onto the exhaust system and catalytic converter while changing filter. This results in smoke from burning off of unit.

51 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Honda Accord

This model Honda makes a loud noise, coming from the underneath the car, when first started cold. The sound is more like a "thump" and is supspected (although I'm not certain) to be either the transmission or the exhaust system. I tried several different cars and the noise was consistent. The dealer tells me the noise is "normal" which is absurd. Honda has a recall pending on earlier model cars for an exhaust syustem problem--I'm wondering if this could be related. I am not an expert so do not know if this is a serious matter or not.
