After 2 years of owning my new 2011 Honda Accord, I noticed a grinding sound during cold starts that lasted 1-2 seconds and then stops. I have the dealership inspect the problem but they quickly dismissed and said the noise was being made by the vtc and to not worry about the noise. In addition, they said that no harm would be caused by the noise. Now I have over 100,000 miles on the car and the noise is on every cold start no matter what the temperature and last for 2-5 seconds. I recently called the dealer and they indicated that if the vtc was the problem (which it has been all along), then I would need to pay in full for the repair since it is out of warranty.

Starter is failing from time to time. When using push-button start, sometimes the starter makes a strong grinding noise and does not start the vehicle. It will sometimes do this for one, two, or three attempts in a row. Eventually, the starter will work. I'm afraid the starter will eventually fail completely. Car has less than 75,000 miles.
Please note that there was a recall for the 2013 Honda Accord for similar issues. The vehicle will at times not start and only make a grinding noise when depressing the start button, this still occurring after changing the battery and starter twice in addition to the fob battery. I speculate that the braking system may contribute to this issue as sometimes the car will start after pumping/pressing the brake pedal a few times or just holding it after initial attempt to start the car (very frustrating). New issue involves the car starting while only pressing the brake and moving the gear shifter (dangerous as a kid can start the vehicle without pressing the start button). Have reported the issue to Honda (local/California main) and spoke to a Honda representative yesterday (5/7/2019) to no avail. Please issues a recall for these cars having this issue before someone gets hurt, or worse, looses their lives. This has been going on for years and is almost on a daily basis, last even was today.

Hello� whenever I cold start my Honda Accord, there's a short grinding noise at the start, in which disappears immediately after a second or two of the grinding. This has happened every single cold start since I bought the car 3 months ago. After doing some research, it appears there was a similar issue for earlier years of this car.
I purchased my vehicle one year ago (December 2018) and have had a grinding noise upon starting the vehicle. This grinding noise occurs during or weather and cold weather. I went to a Honda dealership where they ran an oil consumption test and came to the conclusion that the vtc actuator wasn't working properly and there was a high oil consumption. Honda is saying there was never a recall but this is and has been a well known occurring issue with Honda's from years 2008-2012) and I have not been able to fix as the price to fix the vehicle would cost just as much as the price I purchased it for. I'm highly disappointed with a Honda as I've heard excellent things about Honda cars which is why I purchased my Accord. If I had known of the issue I wouldn't have purchased it and I'd rather purchase a different car than to have to come out of pocket. I don't feel I have been treated properly throughout this process and I gabe Honda the chance to make things right but no one is willing to cooperate. I will not be purchasing a new vehicle. I even thought to trade my vehicle in for a 2018 Honda Accord but if I feel I've been treated poorly why would I want to continue giving a company my business if I've been treated poorly? also my dad was considering purchasing a brand new 2021 Honda civic but now I will lead him to a different brand vehicle as Honda has not lived up to its name. And now to top everything off, my motor is going all due to the negligence of the Honda dealer. If they would have fixed the vtc actuator problem my motor wouldn't be consuming so much oil and my motor would not have blown. I think it's a little outrageous that Honda thinks it's normal for me to have to pay for an oil change at least once a month if not sooner when it was a known problem with thousands of Honda�s.

Periodically my car wouldn't start and I would get a grinding sound from the starter early in the morning when it's oarked in my drive way. Also while on the highway driving after putting a full tank of gas in my car I would sometimes get a bogging down issue as if I don't have enough gas or as if the motor isn't getting enough gas.
Whenever I start the vehicle, it makes a grinding noise several times before starting. Took it to the dealership I bought it from and I was told it was the starter and the torque converter. I have changed the starter 4 times in span of 3 years period I have had the car. I have taken it to several mechanic and each of them tell me it's the starter and the flywheel. Took it to the dealer to fix it and told them about the flywheel issue. The tech told me it was a problem known to 2013-2015 Honda Accord. I asked the dealers to agree to fixing the starter and any other issues relating to the starter because they know what the issue is but the refused. I have 2 of my colleagues with the same 2014 Honda Accord with the same issues. The issue started 2 months after purchasing the car in November 2018 at a Honda dealership.
I have a touring trim of the Honda Accord 2016, meaning it has a v6 engine. At around 38,000 miles, the starter started acting up. When I try to start it, it makes a grinding noise and won't start. I lived with it for a little bit because I'm usually able to get it to start after a couple of attempts. I bought a brand new starter from Honda, installed it, and the car worked perfectly again. It started every time. 1 week later and the issue started happening again. It doesn't happen as often, but it shouldn't be happening at all. It's a brand new starter and I'm having the same exact issue as before. It happens like once a day now. The old starter was giving me issues every other time I tried to start the car. Grinding noise while attempting to start. Vehicle was stationary. Grinding noise can occur once or up to 10 times before engine will finally start. Engine had less than 100,000 miles when initially occurred. Continued to get worse over time and mileage.
The vehicle made a loud grinding noise and failed to start at 50k miles on the odometer. Dealer stated that the starter needed to be replaced at a cost of over $900. Dealer refused to provide assistance with expense despite low mileage and clearly premature problem with this vehicle.
Vtc (variable timing control) actuator, horrible grinding noise at start up and I do know that Honda is aware of this and has had many many complaints. That has got to be a �lemon law� issue and I believe it needs to be fixed promptly. On a cold start, is when it makes the terrible noise. If it's driven for a while and then started up again, it is a 50/50 chance that it will make the noise again.
Since last 5 years I noticed loud grinding noise at startup, only in the morning when I first start the engine. Noise does not happen on startups during the day and the engine runs fine. Just the annoying about 2 second long scratch noise at first start in the morning. But since last 2-3 weeks it has gone worst and get that noice even when I start driving and every time I slow down and start speed up again it get that noice like gear slipping or grinding noise until I reach to faster speed like above 30-35. Was told by Honda dealership that it may cost up to $600 to get the vtc actuator fixed but after doing research found this is a common problem for the 2008-2012 Accords. Why should I pay for a known issue by the manufacturer. Ive always been a advocate for Honda vehicles but this is unacceptable and a recall needs to be made to fix this and the pistons leading to the excessive oil consumption. I will be fighting this with the dealership on this cost to get it fixed and im highly disappointed in the findings about this issue.

When this problem first happened the car has a grinding noise at cold start car is sitting still, vehicle is now producing grinding noise at start and at take off, at various intervals. I have researched and advised by a mechanic this is called the vtc acuator and seems to be common in 2008 to 2011 Honda Accord's.
Heard growling sound from engine when coming to a stop, occasionally during acceleration at low speeds and during cold start. Went to dealership and issue was found to be due to low engine oil (3 quarts low) . Had the oil changed about 6000 miles before this issue occurred.
Excessive oil consumption and grinding noise in the engine.
The contact owns a 2010 Honda Accord. While driving 15 mph, a grinding noise was heard coming from the engine. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to shingle springs Honda (4070 mother lode dr, shingle springs, CA 95682, (530) 677-5700) where it was diagnosed that the oil level was low and the vehicle was due for a routine oil change. The routine oil change was completed and the grinding noise was gone. The contact then received a service bulletin from Honda for oil consumption testing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer every 1,000 miles for several months where it was diagnosed that a half quart of oil was being used. The oil was refilled. At the end of the testing period, the dealer found that the vehicle was not consuming an excessive amount of oil. The contact believed that the vehicle consumed an excessive amount of oil and notified the manufacturer where a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
Vtc acuator is faulty. For 2 years now I've had a grinding noise when I start the car and no car shop has been able to tell me what is wrong up until yesterday I found out it's the vtc actuator that's making the grinding sound and it's been draining my oil. I call America Honda to see if it has a recall for this faulty part and all I am told is that if I have had the car for less than 3 years or under 35 thousand miles then it would be covered under warranty. Which the car is 2012. So the $700 that all shops want to fix this part is being put all on the owner with no warning that this problem will happen. This has had a lawsuit before for the excessive oil being lost but not for the actual problem which is the vtc actuator. Honda needs to recall all of the cars that they have sold with the faulty vtc acuators and pay for this mistake they have known about for years. When my engine dies it will be on Honda for not properly making and selling these faulty cars.

This is a safety raised issue on a 2008 Accord-lxp that I purchased used (which had about 29k originally when I purchased it as a certified Honda Accord) from herb chambers boston. Since I purchased the car, I started hearing an odd grinding noise when starting the car on cold days - Honda said just keep oil full. I then find out that a recall had been issued to fix the oil consumption, that Honda had finally agreed there was an issue with the engine design and would fix it and at the same time would not cause other issues to emerge such as vtc and the timing chain issues. Recently my engine light came on, I started researching the problem. It was the first time I knew about the following issues which I will be detailing/describing below. Results were bad: a timing chain failure. My car has stopped in the middle of road causing a very dangerous situation which could led to me losing my life. Not, only that, when I tried to just drive the car a mile back to my house it was accelerating and decelerating by it self. In addition, I decided to take it to the dealership for a diagnoses, I almost ended up in couple accidents. The car was uncontrollable and won't stop and the brakes won¿t respond due to issues caused by oil consumption, to vtc actuator to a timing chain failure: the car keep accelerating and decelerating by it self on the road or highway. Note: ideally the timing chain should not fail on 58k miles. Simplified sequence of problems: oil consumption issue vtc (valve timing control) actuator timing chain (either loose or broken) safety issue.
Recently, my car started consume too much oil. To fix that,dealership advised to replace piston rings for better result. After we have new piston rings, in a month and so engine is making grinding noise while starting. Dealership said it wasn't happened due to piston rings replacement. But we don't have that problem before and now dealership can charge us up to $700 for new part .
Vtc actuator grinding noise - in the spring of 2015 I started to notice a grinding noise when the car was started in the morning. I took the car in to Honda of bowie (bowie, maryland) on may 23, 2015, and they said it was the vtc actuator and that Honda had the concern under investigation, and that Honda would not cover the repair. They also said they would contact me with any additional details. It has been nearly year since I brought the car in, and Honda has not contacted me and the grinding noise now occurs not only every morning but now every time the car sits for a couple hours. I am very concerned that this problem is getting worse and I am worried about the long term reliability of this car and associated future repair costs associated with this issue.

I began hearing a disturbing mechanical rattle on cold starts and started to become more excessive during the winter months. It was confirmed that the vtc actuator was the problem and I contacted Honda America for a solution and assistance but they denied any goodwill service because of the age and miles on my car even thou its a common problem with every 2008 Accord 2. 4l kseries engine. My 2003 Accord, sounds much better at start up than my 2008. Kind of sad since it's over 200,000 miles now. The grinding sounds so bad it has to be damaging to something in the engine. With so many complaints from all the 2008 v4 owners, I don't know why Honda is acknowledging this problem and release a service bulletin but not a free replacement of the troubled parts. This is very frustrating given and I am very unhappy with Honda's customer service. After speaking with casy with american Honda this morning, he stated that a recall has not been made because it has not caused an immediate harm to consumers. So, if I understand him correctly, harm to a consumer has to happen before something is done to a known problem????.
The car makes metal grinding noise when start the engine in the morning or when the engine is cool down. The noise last about 1 to 2 seconds but it's very loud. Mechanics insisted it's okay to drive. It's happened for a few months now and I am just afraid that something will be break very soon.

There is a TSB 09-010 regarding a vtc actuator that drains of oil and is not properly lubed when starting the engine cold, causing the grinding noise until oil reaches the part again but Honda refuses a recall although there have been numerous complaints about this issue.
Car consumes oil between oil changes. It will take 2-3 quarts of motor oil between servicing. Found no oil leak. Oil levels can drop really low and oil light indicator does not turn on. Vehicle still has excessive oil consumption issue, as well as the low oil indicator failing to illuminate. Oil light indicator can cause excessive damage to the engine if the oil level is low, because it fails to warn the driver when the oil level is low, especially since this vehicle has an excessive oil consumption issue. There have been numerous complaints about this issue and Honda has failed to recall vehicles for this issue.
