1 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/25/2019

I have a 2012 Honda Civic lx, it has intermittent problems with unintended acceleration. It occurred twice on the highway and also urban area. Just this morning, it happened again I was on the highway when I noticed the car suddenly accelerates and speeds up without stepping the gas pedal. Fortunately the brakes responded to slow down. I came out of the highway, and I had to stop at a red light but still it was a constant fight acceleration by itself and stepping on the brake until the car will operate normally.

2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2015 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/24/2018

3 incidents of unintended acceleration - each time I was turning left into a parking space slowly when the engine rev'd and the car lurched forward. The 3rd incident ended with my car speeding through a plate glass window. The dealership assumes that I hit the accelerator instead of the brake. I definitely did not. I applied the brake and was gliding into the parking spot. When the car sped up. The brake failed to stop it.

3 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/24/2017

On or about December 21, 2017 and on December 25, 2017 (at approximately 5:20 pm eastern time), the engine of my 2010 Honda fit accelerated rapidly for no apparent reason while I was driving on a city or suburban street. On both occasions, I was driving at 20-25 miles per hour. I was not trying to increase the car's speed by pushing on the accelerator. The car has a manual transmission. On both occasions, I was able to slow the car by pushing down on the car's clutch and putting the gear shift into neutral. The engine continued to operate at a high speed after the gear shift was in neutral.

4 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2004 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/07/2017

I was stopped at a light with my r foot on the break. Suddenly the car went into an uncontrolled acceleration. I could hear the engine revving. In a few seconds, it hit the car directly in front of me and stopped upon impact but if that car hadn't been there I would have been propelled into a busy intersection with crossways traffic. It was like a nightmare. This was at a very busy city street intersection at a busy time of day (3 pm), on the access rd to a major interstate hwy in a large metro area. The other driver and valet guys from a hotel across the street witnessed I was extremely shaken up but alert and in my right mind, etc.

5 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/20/2016

Driving up to a drive-in bank the car suddenly accelerated. I stopped the car a few feet beyond the teller window by a heavy application of the brakes. I put the car in reverse and backed up to the window. In reverse the engine was still racing. I put the car in neutral and the engine continued to race. Upon finishing my banking transaction I put the car in drive. The engine slowed to a normal idle I took the car to the dealer for service four days later; the dealer found nothing abnormal.

6 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/21/2016

My 2013 Honda Civic hesitates when I attempt to accelerate suddenly. This is dangerous when trying to make a left hand turn in front of oncoming traffic, or merge at a freeway entry and accelerate to highway speeds. The electronic fuel injection, computer control or the engine or cv transmission may be the cause. I suspect the computer control, as the car is equipped with "eco mode". But the problem occurs whether "eco mode" is on or off. This has happened repeatedly, but I will only list the most recent issue below.

Failure Date: 01/27/2016

Unintended acceleration on 01/27/2016 when the vehicle was about to make right turn on an intersection with the right traffic light on. Suddenly it accelerated at about 60miles and hour. All my effort to stop it by applying the breaks failed temporarily. The odometer reading on the car is about 13,400 miles. No accident occurred. The vehicle is currently parked and not to be driven until Honda corporation tells me what to do. I have never had this experience with other cars I have owned or driven over the past 22 years.

11 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/10/2015

On my return home from work as I slowly came to my driveway car suddenly accelerated on its own tried to brake to stop the brakes did not help car hit the garage door that was closed still speeding inside the garage like wild bull. There was an old Mercedes Benz and a motorcycle inside the garage among other stored goods that stopped the car moving any further if the mercedes was not there I would have been killed by hitting the concrete wall of the garage. There is lots of damage at this time in my garage and lots of deductibles I have to pay to get things fixed, for something of no fault of mine. I am so glad it did not happen before few minutes when I was still on the road at a traffic hour after work between 6 to 7 pm on Friday April 10th. During this accident my garage filled with smoke I was terrified thinking of fire hazard next I threw myself out of the car then came and turned off the car called fire department they came and saw the garage full of smoke but thankfully no fire hazard. I am lucky this did not happen on the road and I am thankful I am able to report this so someone else will not go through something like this.

12 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/08/2015

Sudden unintended acceleration : while my wife was driving the vehicle on the driving lane on I-5 south at about 60mph and I was at passenger's seat, my wife yelled "the car is getting faster and faster. " and I told her to step on the brake. She said she was already pedalling the brake but it did not work, and the car was approaching to a big truck in front of us with frightening speed. Since there were many cars in front, behind and on the passing lane at the time of the incident, we could not do anything else but steering the car to the right side off the driving lane in order to avoid fatal accident. There was space covered with rought grasses, bushes and soft fences there. The vehicle kept moving along, crashing the objects with high speed of about more than 85 mph. Finally the car stopped after going along more than 50 yards. As soon as the car stopped, we barely opened the doors and escaped from the terribly damaged car. The car's fron side was facing backward, and I heard afterward that my wife used the hand brake to stop the car. Air bags of driver's and passenger's seat, and side airbag were deployed. Other three cars stopped at the scene off the lane, and advised us to remove valuables inside the car, because it may catch fire. They called 911, and fire fighters and the police arrived at the scene. I reported the accident to my insurance, dmv, and Honda USA. My wife's right knee got bruise, and I have light pain on the left side of my neck and chest. My wife is panic, and afraid of driving. I am also very much shocked. I know Honda would not easily admit the defect of the car, even though it will investigate the car. But I swear to god that the sua took place. Now I believe that sua occurs without driver's maloperation of the car, because there was absolutely no misoperation of the car. I please request NHTSA consider this incident very seriously. Thanks.

13 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/28/2014

Driving home up 50 degree hill. Approximate speed 35 mph. I took my foot off accelerator because I like to coast the last 1/4 of the hill for safety, slowing down for any potential idiots who might sail around the corner from the flat cross street, cutting off the part of the street that, by law, should be left clear for the car coming uphill. In a split second, my car accelerates suddenly, as though I had stomped down on the accelerator again. Now what do I do? my 2012 Honda Civic had premature brake failure that is now the subject of a class action lawsuit. Do I get rid of this "new" Honda that turned one mid-October??? I don't know what to do, given the other stories about unintended acceleration in new Hondas.

15 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/23/2014

On April 23, 2014 at about 4:40 p. M. My son was driving 30 mph which is 5 miles under the posted speed limit for that area where he lives. The road leading to the back entrance of his housing complex is a single one-way lane with a wide bicycle lane. This roadway curves slightly to the left leading into the entrance of his housing complex. On approaching the end of the road my son took his foot of the gas to slow down the vehicle, turn the steering wheel to the left (as the road curves naturally to the left) the vehicle suddenly accelerated and steered to the right. My son tried very hard to pull the steering wheel to the left to correct the steering but it would not turn. The steering wheel locked and the vehicle steered uncontrollably to the right, jumping the concrete curb and stuck a concrete street light pole, flipped over and landed a few feet away on the driver's side with five airbags deployed. (one on the steering wheel, and four over the doors). He was examined by paramedics on the scene and later observed severe bruising on his abdomen and neck which required further medical attention. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and declared a total lost by the insurance company.

17 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/22/2014

On 22nd March 2014, I was driving my one year old Civic on interstate 55 from jackson towards baton rouge. After travelling about 50 miles with an average speed of 65 to 70 miles per hour, I suddenly faced problem with acceleration. The acceleration went crazy spiking the tachometer between 4000 and 6000 rpm and the car was slowing down though I gave the acceleration. When I gave the acceleration, it was making roaring sound and rpm on tachometer is spiking between 4000 and 6000 rpm. Car was coming to stall slowly from 65 mph, before it could come down to standstill I turned on emergency lights and pulled the vehicle on to the shoulder. Fortunately two vehicles behind me past my car merging to left lane seeing my emergency lights on. After pulling the car on to the shoulder, I have put the car on to parking gear for few minutes and then again shifted back to drive. From thereon I did not face any acceleration problem again for the rest of my 2. 5 hours journey. For safety, I just stayed on right lane and drove with constant speed of about 65 mph through out my journey. It was really frightening experience when I was driving at 65 mph and suddenly accelerator not working and going berserk and car slowing down on interstate. I would like to know what could be the problem with my car and if there are any solutions for this. Please let me know, I am really worried now to drive my car on highways and to go on long drives.

Contact did not know how long had elapsed before she saw through a haze wisps of smoke coming out in front of the car and noticed the airbag was deployed. Fearing the car might catch fire, contact pushed open the door and found the car had stopped in the southbound lane right next to the raised concrete medium that separated north and southbound lanes. 22 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/08/2013

My 2012 Honda Civic has intermittent problems with unintended acceleration. These occurrences only occur on the freeway and seem to occur more frequently when I am near sky harbor airport. The will suddenly go from 2 rpm to 7 rpm in a manner not achievable by applying the gas pedal or any other method. Once the car reaches 7 rpm it will immediately go back down to 2 rpm and this cycle will occur two more times before the car will operate normally.

23 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2011 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/14/2013

I was stopped in a parking garage and intended to pull into an open space on my left. I turned the steering wheel all the way to the left and my car suddenly accelerated on its own. It crashed into the car to the right of the open space and continued to accelerate, pushing the other car into the car to its right. I was pressing the brakes during the entire incident but they were not functional. My car finally pushed the other car out of the way and my car slammed into the concrete block in front of the open space and stopped. Had the concrete block not been there, I would have flown over the side of the third level of this parking garage. My foot was in no way on the accelerator. It was on the brake the entire time. Also, a non-Honda mechanic experienced the same revving issue when he inspected the car after the incident. However, Honda claims there is no problem with the car and will not refund us the cost of damages we paid out of pocket. But they did buy the car back and buy out the remaining 6 months of my lease, indicating they knew there was a problem with the vehicle, but were not willing to own up to it.

31 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/27/2012

I have a 2007 Honda Civic lx with 36,000 miles. I was turning left into a parking space going very slowly (<5 mph) when my vehicle suddenly accelerated. My foot was not on the gas pedal. I slammed on the brakes and the car continued to accelerate and I hit a curb which then caused the car to stop its acceleration. The brakes did not make too much difference as the car was continuing to move forward and rpms continued to increase as I tried to brake. Previously, I had a problem with high rpm's and increased acceleration and rough idling at 34000 miles. I took it to the dealer who replaced the engine mount which I found out was under my powertrain warranty. I have also had the battery replaced. Other than that, those are the only issues I have experienced until today. I called the dealer and they said it must be operator error, but why would the car continue to accelerate with my foot on the brakes? I checked the mat as well and it had not become entangled with the gas pedal as the dealer suggested. The car moving forward at high rpms by itself is a concern. I am happy that I did not have an accident or hit a pedestrian. I am filing this complaint because I believe that this is a serious issue with my vehicle and as I researched, I am finding that others are having the same issue as I am under some of the same circumstances. I am afraid to drive my car!.

32 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/13/2012

I got into a accident last Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, like around 8 or 9 in the morning. I was making a right turn when my car went out of control even though I was already stepping on the brakes and I was trying to turn the steering wheel to the left but the car just kept going to the right until I hit the pole sign that says "no parking at all times" (something like that). The metal pole that I hit broke and almost 1/4 of that metal pole that was stuck to the ground scraped the bottom of part of my car and the bottom covering fell off and it cost $4,000. 00 to repair and now I have to pay $500. 00 for my deductible which is not even my fault why my car did that. It wasn't the first time my car did that. It did something weird twice last year before I got into this accident last week. First was last year, a month or two after I got my car when I was driving on the freeway when I tried stepping on the breaks and instead of my car slowing down, it suddenly accelerated. Thank goodness there's no car in front of me. Then the second time was I think around November or December of last year when my friend was test driving the car to see if she wants to buy the same thing. We were together in the car and she was driving when she stopped stepping on the gas and brakes and the car just accelerated by itself. She was surprised that it that but we both figured that any car is just like that and since we both don't know anything about cars we thought it was normal for my car to accelerate on its own until I got into this accident, the police told me that it is not normal for my car to do that specially when I'm already stepping on the brakes. :(.

34 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/29/2011

The vehicle purchased new from a Honda dealership in waukesha wis. On 11-28-2008. One yr. After purchase we noticed the engine would suddenly accelerate, when backing up, braking. The engine would suddenly accelerated for no apparent reason. The driver would need to depress the brake pedal with greater force, and then shift auto. Trans into neutral. We took it back to the dealer 3 separate times, and they indicated they were unable to find the problem. On one occasion per their suggestion we purchased the rubber all weather Honda floor mats at a cost of $110. 00. I doubted this would fix the problem. In November 2011 the same problem was experienced a fourth time in a parking lot. While waiting in a parking lot the engine accelerated suddenly, and more pressure was applied to the brake pedal and shift into neutral. I notified the dealership of the continuing problem. On 11-29-2011 we left the Civic at the dealer, and wayne nicklas the (ahm) would also examine the car with a mechanic. The mileage was 26,526. Mr. Nicklas met with us. He explained how they checked the tire depth, pressure, and the overall condition of the car. I then asked for specifics about the sudden acceleration, and he indicated they were unable to find the problem. According to mr. Nicklas, there was no abnormal engine code, and it was possible that the problem did not occur long enough for the computer to record it. He denied other similar problems reported with Civics. We found similar consumer complaints filed on web sites with Civics involved in accidents. It was suggested we trade in the vehicle. We felt unsafe in continuing to operate the vehicle. The Honda dealer left us hanging, and offered us no further help with trading in the vehicle. We incurred a substantial loss when we traded in the Civic at another dealership. Research found this is not an isolated issue by any means.

35 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/11/2011

Car began accelerating rapidly while driving down a hill. Was finally able to bring it to a stop after driving down an entire stretch of flat road without pressing the gas at all. When I put the vehicle in park, it accelerated furiously but didn't attempt to go anywhere, and finally I just turned it off. My father was able to come to my assistance, and was able to get the car driveable again after pressing on the gas several times while the vehicle was in park. I drove the car to work the next morning without any problems. However, I feel that if this would have happened on a higher speed road, such as the interstate, my safety would have been severely comprimised and bringing the car to a complete stop would have been much more difficult. I really don't have any other problems with the car, but I am now very skeptical about driving it, especially on the interstate.
