43 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

2007 Honda Civic, unintended acceleration has occurred 2 times while sitting in traffic with foot on brake, no interference from floor mat, car in drive. 1st time car had been driven 45 minutes, 2nd time only about 5 minutes. No parts have been replaced, but idle has been "relearned", and other software elements have been reinstalled. So far, technicians have not identified cause of unintended acceleration. Because it fortunately happened while driver's foot was on brake, no damage occurred, since driver was able to hold car in position until it was turned off the first time. Car was racing for about 10-15 seconds before turned off. When turned back on with car in park, the engine still raced for a couple of seconds then came back to normal idle and driver was able to drive to destination with no further problem. Car was taken the next morning to dealership and kept for two weeks while technicians tested it, drove it over 500 miles, had factory technicians come, and performed updates and reinstallations listed above. The car was declared safe and running according to Honda specs, so owner took back the car. Week later it happened again. 2nd time, driver was able to put car in neutral, at which point rpms rose to over 5000, then dropped back to normal idle. Currently car is being checked at dealership again.

Failure Date: 05/26/2009

On two separate occasions I experienced sudden acceleration. The first time was, may 26, 2009, and the second time, January 15, 2010. When this occurred I was approaching a stop sign applying the brake traveling about 10 mph. The brake began to fade and the car started to accelerate. I quickly put the car in neutral, which caused the motor to increase in rpm and then went into ideal, which all happened in a few seconds. Both times I brought the car into the Honda dealership within an hour of the occurrences. Both times they were unable to identify the cause. After Honda checked the car out on January 15, 2010 I returned on January 26, 2010, leaving the car with them for 2 â½ days for a more intense evaluation. Again, they could not identify the problem.

57 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/08/2003

Within the 8 days we owned this car, it had accelerated twice while my teenaged daughter was driving. These incidents happened when she was accelerating after having stopped at a stop sign. Being an inexperienced driver she did not realize the problem, only commented the car felt like it was driving funny. When the incident on 08/08/03 happened, I was driving with my younger daughter in the car. We were pulling into a parking space in front of a restaurant at a very slow rate of speed, when the car suddenly accelerated, causing us to jump up onto the sidewalk and run into a cement picnic table, denting the front bumper. I had to slam on the brakes to stop the car from driving through the front window of the restaurant and possibily injuring or killing the people inside. We took the car back to the dealership, where their diagnostic technicians were unable to duplicate the problem. We were told there is nothing wrong with the car and to come and pick it up as there was nothing further they could do for us. We found on this NHTSA website that there were six other similar incidents of this model of car having sudden acceleration during slow speed or stopping situations. We provided this information to the dealership, but they are still unwilling to help us.

62 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/07/2002

2002 Honda Civic 1. 6 automatic gear equipped with cark-91 nokia car kit crashed. Possible reason was interference of electromagnetic signals of car kit with electronic throttle control. Car was in parking place. Cellular phone (nokia 5110) installed to car kit. Engine has been started. Rear gear selected. With slow input to throttle caused rapid acceleration to back. My wife tried to stop the car with braking but possibly with panic she pushed the throttle pedal instead of brake pedal. The back of car crashed hitting and damaging a small truck. I investigated for the manufacturing error. Service declined it and also there was no clue about manufacturing error (even in computer record of the car). After the delivery of car (03/28/2002) my wife lived similar incidence. She installed nokia 5110 to car kit, started engine, selected rear gear and engine has started acceleration. My wife has been experienced now and immediately shut the engine down with turning car key to shut down. Now, she drives the car with cellular phone closed. I think that possible reason of this accident is the unattended triggering of throttle to full open by electromagnetic signal created by car kit. So, this shows that insulation of throttle control system is weak in this model. It has to be much better insulated to screen the electromagnetic noise created by any other equipment.
