Honda Civic owners have reported 10 problems related to dash wiring (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Civic based on all problems reported for the Civic.
Civic had been parked for about 24 hours and when I looked outside my apartment window it was on fire. The failure seemed to start in the dash wiring somewhere. The fire started there as the most damage was done to the front portion of the car and the dash was completely destroyed. The engine compartment was not damaged, the rear seat was damaged but not destroyed by fire completely, and the trunk was untouched. Front window blew out and the safety glass (more likely the plastic film in between glass sheets) melted, both front door windows blew outwards, and moonroof glass shattered. Fire department was called and they put it out. Vehicle was a total loss. It was junked. No insurance claim was filed on it because it was paid off and we were only carrying liability on it.

When I start the car (with my foot on clutch), a buzzing sound comes on and I'm guessing it's from the dash. It has happened several times in the past but I just ignored it. Until recently I read from your website that a similar complaint has been lodged so I decided to complain.

Turned car off. Car began to honk wildly, interior lights flashed, door locked and unlocked, and radio is without power. Had to pull under hood horn fuse to stop powering the electrical short. This fuse powers horn and brake lights. Fuse must remain pulled to keep horn from sounding. Previously had problems with electric windows and door locks. These were fixed under warranty. Latest problem has occurred before but did not include door locks and interior lights. Afraid under dash electrical short will cause accident (auto-deploy airbags, etc. While driving).
Failure of electrical system to alert of engine problems, so no oil or engine light went off. The engine wasn't getting any oil to it,and of course this also involves a malfunction of the "oil pump".

At 3:30 p. M. On 1/19/99 my daughter stopped at a friends house and parked the 99 Honda Civic ex just outside her friend's garage. She left the sunroof open slightly and removed the ignition keys. At 4:15 p. M when she came out to get into the car to leave, she noticed smoke coming out of the sunroof and could not see inside the windows. Her friend called 911. However the car was totally engulfed in flames by the time the fire truck arrived. The car was a total loss and property damage included the vinyl siding that melted & buckled on the side of the garage. It's a sheer miracle that no one was hurt and no more damage was done. Had it occurred in the middle of the night when the car was parked in the garage, the house would have caught on fire. My husband contacted the piedmont Honda dealership 1/19/99 around 9:30 a. M. However they were not interested in the fact that our Honda caught on fire for what has to be an electrical defect of some sort.
Computer command control module malfunctioned. In addition, engine misfired, causing loss of power. Engine check light comes on/off.
Scott Honda mailed a post card to my home in Feb 2ooo for car recall. Upon calling hoinda the lease agent put me on hold and spoke to the service dept. She then proceeded to say that I would not have engine problems until my car reached betwen 60,000-70,000 miles. She stated that the engine would rumble and the engine light woudl come on due to faulty wiring, etc. I expalined that my car was service and the engine lihgt came on during my inspection and that I spent 450. 00 on getting my car rewired etc. . She explained that there was something else wiht the car and it would occur at a higher milage and to bring my car in. I asked her waht to due in case I don't experience problems or if I lost my recall postcard . She stated that it was no problem and to call the dealership mgr. And that he would honor the situation and give me a new postcard. . Upon my enigine light turing on. . . And my contacting Honda serive the gentleman was rather scarastic and rude and accused me of not taking car of my car as well as stating that he knew of no recalls for a 1997 Civic. Would someone be so kind as to investigate this situation?? Hondas are reliable cars and the engine should not have probelems @ 3 years old. In addition, my air conditioner and heating system only lasted approx. 2/12/ years. There must be something electronically wrong with this model. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, deidre l. Adore.

The malfunction indicator illuminated. Vehicle has been to the dealer for this problem six times. The dealer could not determine the problem.
The dash wiring harness switch melted which caused the head lights to fail.
When I turn the ignition on, I sometimes hear a spark buzz coming from the interior of the display panel of the speedometer, etc. I am not sure this is normal. It could be a wiring connection problem. Unable to take it to local Honda dealer or ask questions. They are very unhelpful. Have driven thousands of vehicles, and never have heard such spark buzz noise coming from the dashboard when turning ignition on. Honda corporation has not answered my inquiry.
