38 Ignition Switch problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

Car stalls without warning. Have to wait 5 to 10 minutes to restart. Mechanic tried several repairs and finally concluded it's a faulty ignition switch. Nhtsa recall # 02v-120. Today, I almost got hit and parked it until problem is fixed. Lucky to have a backup car. Honda customer service line said they won't fix it, because it has 220 miles. I want Honda to act responsibly and fix it. This problem is a recipe for roads disasters especially for people who don't have multiple cars or just taking it for granted. Today, I could have been killed or hurt an innocent person . I am sure there are a lot of Honda owners struggling with the same problem and fear to come out of the shadows with this scary problem and just driving as if everything is ok. Sometimes when accidents happen because of this, the whole truth is unknown.

My local mechanic fixed the issue that was in fact a faulty ignition switch. Honda refused to issue reimbursement for the failed part.

43 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/19/2012

Vehicle stalls without notice, can't accelerate anymore when it happens, have to throw hazard lights on and pull over into emergency lane. If not in motion, car will just stall, and cars behind will rear end my vehicle if not paying attention. This is a huge safety concern, it can cause an accident. I brought this up to american Honda, but, my VIN does not qualify for the recall they had on the electrical ignition switch. They directed me to have NHTSA add my VIN to the recall so that I may then qualify.

46 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

It began I think in February 2012 going down the highway. My 1999 Honda Civic turned off then back on which jerked the car. It did not do it again until weeks later. Then it would begin to actually turn off while driver without warning. But then again it would only do it a time or 2. . . . Then not for several weeks later (which by then I had forgotten about it). It did this on and off for the rest of 2012. . . . But would always start right back up. . . . Even putting it in neutral while moving and starting it. . . . . Then putting it back in gear without hardly slowing down. But the last few months, especially in July (2013). . . . It began cutting off more often and would be harder to start. So I decided to have it checked and it was the ignition switch. I had it repaired because it was definitely becoming a hazard to myself and others. My car was not part of the recall in 2002 for the ignition switch (NHTSA # 02v120000). I see online there are many more instances of this part failing and would like to see my car added to the recall list and possibly reimbursed for the cost of repair.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact shifted the vehicle into neutral and coasted to the side of the road. The contact restarted the vehicle and the vehicle functioned normally. The contact stated that the failure recurred several times later. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection but informed the contact that the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. The manufacturer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) and provided no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 13,000. Kmj.

Failure Date: 10/12/2011

While actuating the power door unlock button, the power window down switch, windshield wipers, and ignition switch, there is a popping sound through the audio system. Took to dealership in November of 2011. They could not isolate problem--however they could duplicate it. After consulting with the Honda tech line, the dealership still had no answers. 52 Ignition Switch problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

2002 Honda Civic lx the car will shut down with no indication that anything is wrong. The engine shuts down, but all other options work-radio,a/c, lights, etc. After letting the car sit for 10-20 minutes the car fires up as nothing is wrong at all. This has happened 5 times in the last 4 weeks (500 miles of driving) 142,000 miles on car. I have replaced coil packs, relays and fuel pump. I believe, after researching online, that this issue is related to the ignition switch just like the 1997-2000 Honda recall on 3. 3 million Honda products in may 2002. We have been fortunate enough to safely get the car to the side of the road at 70 mph (coasting). I will be replacing my igintion switch to solve this problem ASAP. .

First sign, I did not no it had a recall the car and just thought it was a fluke . It started right back up. 2nd sign, while entering the highway it just queitly stopped running . . This was in February. . . On April 26, 2011 Tuesday , needed to crank the car two times to get it to started in the mourning, in the afternoon after work at 1:30 pm it needed to be started two times to start. At 5:00 pm car started up fine, six houses down to the stop sign and the car stopped again, parked the car and started the car right up. April 27 2011. Wednesday. 4:30 am car started right up. Stoped at sheetz gas station before work, motor stopped running but all the lights and radio were still on, parked and started it once. Went to work. 1:30 pm started car up and was heading home. On the highway driving about 60 - 65 miles an hour car motor stops. First time it ever died while driving at highway speeds. . Put hazzards on and parked on the side. Parked and then started it once. Drove home. . . It is getting scary, ive put new spark plugs, ignition wires, to correct the problem of the motor stopping before I knew about the recalls on this year Civics. Went to Honda web sight and typed in my VIN number. This car had a recall. It said it was fixed. There has been three owners of this car. 1st. The person who bought it . 2nd. The cleveland Honda dealership. 3rd . Me. Does a Honda dealership have to fix the recall in order for it to say fixed ? cause it wasnt in the car fax that they gave me. .
