09/29/07 we were awaken last night by the fire department because our '05 Honda Civic's engine bay was on fire. We are trying to find out if this is a defect or not. The fire department told us it was not arson. We had not driven the vehicle for a few hours. The car is now totaled. We're waiting on our insurance company to contact us.

purchased as a new vehicle. 2003 Honda Civic ex model
I purchased this vehicle in 2003 as a new vehicle. I have purchased a service contract and the vehicle came with a manufacturers warranty. The manufacturer or the dealer will honor the warranty for the list of problems reported. Brakes leaked fluid and was in the shop more than 6 times. Brakes had to be floored from the original date of pick up from dealer ( March 2003)
a letter 11 pages long was sent to manufacturer making them aware of the all the gauges on the dash board that malfunction. The speedometer gets stuck on 30 mph, the fuel gauge sometimes gives a reading of 3/4 tank full when there is no fuel. I
am not able to tell what speed I am traveling and especially at nights I am not able to tell if the vehicle was placed in reverse or neutral because the lights from these specific parts don't work. The problem is not with the fuse because there is a problem with the wiring. The connection has to be taken off the battery to get these components to work again. I am not a mechanic and don't have time for all these problems. I have received points on my drivers license for speeding. These problems were reported more than a year ago and the manufacturer failed to find a solution to the problems. Everytime I call I get treated like a second class citizen when all I am asking for is a safe vehicle to drive in. I have every reason to be concerned with my life and other motorists lives. Honda of nanuet checked the gauges and told me they are under investigation. At this point in time I should be given my money back.

I was driving in a residential area when my sister and I noticed smoke coming out of the hood. We pulled over into a supermarket parking lot, and I tried to pop open the hood but it was too hot. I looked under and saw fire. My sister tried to look beneath the car and saw fire also. She ran into the supermarket to get a fire extinguisher. A security guard came out with the fire extinguisher and opened up the hood for me and put the fire out. After the fire was out, we looked inside to see what looked to be the oxygen sensor wires all melted. The security guard hypothetically stated that there wasn't anything holding the wires up which caused it to touch the motor. My car was towed to the nearest dealership.

When the car was 2 weeks old, we returned from a drive and found the car would not shut off, even with the ignition in the "off" position and the key removed. The engine sounded as though it was trying to start itself, even though it was still running. I put the key back in and turned it to the "on" position, at which point the unusual noise disappeared, and the car seemed to idle normally. I turned it off again, and the noise returned as the car kept running. I turned the key on and off a few times before the engine finally stopped. As I got out of the car, I noticed smoke rising from under the hood. I opened the hood and saw that a fire was burning on the starter and the nearby rubber hoses. I unsuccessfully tried to blow out the flames, which we put out using a fire extinguisher from our apartment building, which we were parked in front of. All damaged parts were replaced by the dealership service department, although there is still a burnt smell evident after driving the car. I informed Honda of the problem through their "new owner survey" and a letter to their customer relations zone office.
