Honda CR-V owners have reported 1,549 problems related to engine and engine cooling (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda CR-V based on all problems reported for the CR-V.
Blown head gasket leaked coolant in to cylinder. All warning alarms started rotating across dash, while all driver assist technology was also disabled. Car then lost ability to accelerate, but kept running, and we were able to drive about one mile home at about 10mph. We towed car to Honda (it was always maintained by a Honda dealership). Honda dealership confirmed blown gasket and replaced gasket and then injectors for $7,600 total repair bill. We did not see or receive the replaced parts. We have since learned that Honda is well aware of this particular design fault of their 1. 5 engines from 2016 thru 2023 years. Even independent mechanics know of the trouble, as well as any internet search. We were totally unaware til now!.

In December 2024 we brought our 2017 Honda crv for rattling and shaking when accelerating. In all cases below, the dashboard flashed engine warnings and fuel system warnings. The Honda dealership mechanics shop replaced fuel injectors, spark plugs, and adjusted valves. Importantly, they also performed a full coolant service. Services totaled 2,952. 92. In October 2025 we brought the 2017 Honda crv to another Honda dealership for the same issue. They performed a fuel system service and replaced the blower motor and, importantly, a coolant service. Services totaled 1,070. 91. On November 7th the car completely failed and was towed to the first Honda dealership who diagnosed a failed damaged head gasket. Repair will cost 6500. 00 dollars. Upon research we have found that the 2017 Honda crv turbo has what appear to be a known problem with coolant leaking in the cylinders causing shaking and rattling when accelerating and leading to damage of the head gasket. My daughter's, the driver of the car, safety was at risk as the car could have failed at anytime between these repairs. Given Honda's knowledge of this problem I would have expected the two dealerships to have let us know this could be a problem. Given both dealership mechanic shops changed our coolant (these dealerships have joint records so they can see each other's work) and must know about the issue described, I would expect to be told and deal with the issue rather than wait for total failure at 153k miles, just 3k miles past the engine warranty.

My car lost roughly half its power while traveling in heavy traffic on the interstate. The engine light in the lower left hand corner of the dash began blinking at the same time. I was able to get off the interstate whereupon I turned the car off and then restarted it. This cured the problem and it has not happened in the week since. No one has inspected the problem, but I have an appointment with the dealer on November 4, 2025.

Due to a faulty 1. 5 engine, the head gasket prematurely failed which could have led to serious engine failure while driving, and an accident could have occurred, if the car had suddenly stopped while being driven. There were several warning lamps, but the warning lamps on this car sometimes go off for no reason and the car was not overheating. I assumed the car was just acting up again. When I let the car sit for a couple of days and the warning lamps were still on, I took the care to a service center where they diagnosed the problem. Honda is aware of the faulty 1. 5 engine, but have not issued a recall. Replacement of the head gasket will be over $4,000.
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to sincerely request your understanding and support regarding my vehicle repair. My car to union park Honda for the fuel pump recall repair, which was completed under the recall service. However, shortly after that, I was informed that my vehicle now has a head gasket problem, which requires a very expensive repair. Unfortunately, I am currently facing a very difficult financial situation, and it is not possible for me to cover this cost at the moment. This situation has been emotionally and financially challenging for me. I truly appreciate Honda’s care and commitment to its customers, and I am humbly requesting if there is any way the dealership could provide some financial assistance, any special consideration to help me with this repair. Your compassion and understanding would mean a lot to me. Thank you very much for your time and support. My turbo had a nut come loose twice, once after having the turbo completely replaced. This has lead to a head gasket failure.
I first noticed an issue with my car on October 16th. All the dashboard lights came on as if the car had a new battery while I was driving. My Honda dealership said: explanation: fuel system too rich due to faulty fuel injectors. Repairs to be completed: replace fuel injectors, gaskets, spark plugs all suggested repairs were done because I need a car the cost, $2,557. 28 I filed a case with Honda corporate and they said it was due to my car's age and linked to maintenance. I've always had my crv serviced at Honda dealerships and my car is only a 2018.
Subject: engine stalls upon acceleration from stop - near collision ?description: I am experiencing intermittent engine stalling on my 2012 Honda Cr-v. The issue occurs specifically when attempting to accelerate from a complete stop (e. G. , at stop signs or intersections). When I press the gas pedal to proceed, the engine unexpectedly shuts off and loses all motive power. ?on several occasions, the vehicle has stalled multiple times in succession before it would stay running. In one severe incident, I was attempting a right turn onto a busy road from a stop sign. The vehicle stalled mid-turn, leaving me stranded in the path of traffic. A vehicle approaching from behind nearly rear-ended me because I could not clear the intersection. ?there are no warning lights prior to the stall. This loss of power at intersections poses an immediate safety risk of collision. I suspect this may be related to the known vtc actuator/timing chain defect affecting this model year.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle and while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the head gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer for the same diagnosis. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed, and the contact was informed that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed by a Honda dealer and that partial assistance could be provided. The failure mileage was 62,000.

The above would not let me check all of the boxes. I’m having continued problems with my 2022 Honda crv hybrid touring, with every warning light on the car all of a sudden starts flashing and eventually the car looses complete power. This is the third time it has happened to me, and after taking it to two different Honda dealerships, no one can tell me what is going on, and then they send me back out on the road, only for it to happen again. Every warning light on the car lights up and every bell goes off. Yet, no one can tell me a thing! it’s resulted in me being stranded and the car inoperable.

In February 2025 with around 56k miles, started noticing a vibration which I thought was a wheel balancing issue. After having the wheels balanced multiple times. I also replaced the tires twice but the vibration still persists. I started noticing the vibration became more consistent at low speeds 20-23 mph. At this time I am now out of engine warranty. It felt like a bad torque converter, which this vehicle doesn’t have. I brought the vehicle to three different dealerships and they all said the car has no issues. At no point did the car throw a check engine light or code. About five days after visiting the last dealership in October 2025 I was headed to work. Once the engine kicks in there was a loud rattling noise coming from the engine for about 5 seconds then it went away. Now every time the car sits, the first time the engine kicks in is rattles for a few seconds. At no point there were any check engine lights. I took the car back to the dealership and the determined that the injectors and head gasket failed. Not having a check engine light coming on for this issue could have caused an accident if the engine stalled on the highway. Honda would not assist in anyway.

Loss of power and control of vehicle after getting several malfunction errors on instrument panel. Vehicle estates that several safety controls are switched off until problem is resolved. Eventually vehicle resets itself and works fine for weeks.
I brought my vehicle to a Honda dealership for a recall repair for the fuel pump and it was observed that the vehicle was leaking coolant and oil. The mechanic determined that the head gasket needs to be replaced and this is documented and available for review. There were no warning lights or noticeable clues that there was a major engine malfunction occurring. If not for the recall repair it is likely the motor would have failed causing catastrophic damage from the head gasket issue. The repair is expensive and necessary to continue driving the vehicle. This engine failure is not typical of a Honda product and was unexpected.
My 2025 Honda Cr-v hybrid (VIN: [xxx] ) has experienced three separate incidents of a complete loss of power while driving on public roads (on September 5, 2024; October 27, 2024; and October 8, 2025), each time requiring towing. The authorized dealership has performed multiple repairs, with the most recent including the replacement of the throttle body. However, this represents the third recurrence of this identical safety-critical failure within 16 months, indicating that the underlying defect has not been fixed. I believe this vehicle has a persistent and dangerous safety defect that poses an ongoing risk to myself and the public. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with a recent engine failure in my 2018 Honda Cr-v ex-l awd (VIN: [xxx] ), which occurred despite meticulous maintenance my Cr-v experienced a coolant leak through the head gasket, leading to a misfire on cylinder 3 (diagnostic code p0303). Repairs at heritage Honda in bel air, MD, included replacing the head gasket, spark plugs, injectors, and other components, totaling over $6,300. This significant expense for a well-maintained vehicle is disheartening, especially given Honda’s reputation for reliability. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
This complaint is in regards to three engine failures for my vehicle. I purchased the vehicle in October of 2017. In October 2020 this vehicle suffered a malfunction of the fuel injector systems. Warning lights were enabled prior to losing full power of the vehicle at this time and it was brought in for repair. In June 2025, my vehicle began losing power while actively driving resulting in the car and myself being put in potentially dangerous conditions on the road. The car would fail to accelerate and move. The car had to be coasted back to an area of safety. There were no warning lights prior to this happening. Warning lights came on hours later after attempting to address the issue. At that time in June 2025, my car was found to have a blown head gasket from an unknown cause per the dealership. I was without a car for approximately 3 weeks which was devastating for my family and caused hardship. As well as a financial burden from the costly repairs. In September 2025, my car again lost power and was required to be towed to the dealership. At this time I was told again that the fuel injectors needed replaced due to failure. Warning lights did not display prior to the power failure, they displayed after the fact as we attempted to find a cause at the scene. This was a sudden power failure that could have been potentially dangerous.
Turbo failure on the highway caused loss of power and significantly reduced acceleration. The car only had 59,930 miles on it. Now we are getting a repair quote from a Honda dealer to replace the turbo for over $4,500 with no guarantee it will fix the problem.
Dear sir/madam, I am writing to report a serious safety concern with my 2023 Honda Cr-v all-wheel drive, regular gasoline version. On three separate occasions while driving at high speed on the highway, my vehicle suddenly lost power and the engine stalled without warning. When this occurred, the starter would not engage, the vehicle had no electrical power, and multiple warning messages appeared on the dashboard, including emission system problem and all-wheel drive system problem. This type of sudden stall while driving at highway speed creates an extremely dangerous situation and puts both the driver and other motorists at serious risk. I am aware that Honda has issued fuel pump recalls for the 2023 Cr-v hybrid models. However, my vehicle is the regular gasoline version, and based on my experience, I strongly believe that a similar fuel pump defect exists in these models as well. I respectfully request that this issue be investigated as a potential safety defect, and that Honda initiates a recall for the regular gasoline Cr-v models to address this problem.
The vehicle experienced a premature failure of the head gasket; it was blown at 130,000 miles. I was close to home when I received a dash alert stating not to accelerate as the engine was nearing a critically high temperature. If I had not been able to get home so quickly, my safety may have been compromised as my car could have overheated forcing me to pull over on the shoulder of a busy bridge. My local dealership inspected the vehicle and has quoted me nearly $4,500 for the repair, despite it appearing as this is a known issue with this particular engine.

The contact owns a 2017 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled on the interstate. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway. After waiting for a while, the vehicle was restarted with several unknown warning lights flashing on the instrument cluster. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the intake cam, the high-pressure fuel pump, the fuel injectors, and the spark plugs were replaced. The high-pressure test was performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was associated with NHTSA campaign number: 23v858000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 144,532.
Vehicle started hesitating on traffic while running on a 50mph zone, if vehicle would had die on me more than likely I would have been hit from behind by another vehicle. I exited the main road and drove cautiously home. Honda dealer inspected vehicle and confirmed a failed engine head gasket.
Vehicle: 2020 Honda Cr-v hybrid, 2. 0l engine VIN: [xxx] mileage at failure: ~73,000 miles dealer: autonation Honda fremont, California estimated repair cost: ~$4,200 issue: blown head gasket summary of complaint: at approximately 73,000 miles, my 2020 Honda Cr-v hybrid suffered a blown head gasket. The vehicle began showing symptoms of overheating and coolant loss, and a dealer diagnostic confirmed head gasket failure. The repair estimate from autonation Honda fremont is approximately $4,200. A head gasket failure at this mileage is abnormal and indicates a potential design defect. I am aware of an ongoing class-action lawsuit concerning premature head gasket and engine failures in late-model Honda vehicles with turbocharged and hybrid engines, and my experience appears consistent with these allegations. This defect is a safety hazard because it can lead to sudden overheating, engine stalling, or complete failure while driving, which puts drivers and passengers at risk. It also creates an unreasonable financial burden on owners. I respectfully request that the NHTSA investigate this issue as a potential widespread defect across Honda Cr-v hybrid and related models. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Head gasket problem leaking I contact american Honda for over 2 years all the lights coming on and off incident last year to now multiple times vehicles loss power.
My 2013 Honda crv completely broke down in late August 2025, as I was backing out of my driveway. Our lives were at risk. This could have happened in traffic, causing a terrible collision. My local Honda dealership found the chain guides broken and the timing off, and recommended replacement of several parts (timing chain, guides, tensioner, exhaust cam, rockers, and . . . Vtc actuator). Initially, they thought the cause was a lack of proper maintenance, specifically, infrequent or improper oil changes. I knew we had taken proper care of our car, so I began investigating. The check engine light was on for at least 2 years (as well as the rattling at start-up), and I had not gotten clarity on it until recently, after consulting with multiple professionals. Finally, a jiffy lube tech said it was due to the vtc actuator. I then brought my car to the Honda dealership in July 2025 for an oil change and to discuss the check engine light and vtc actuator issue. At that time, they did not alert me to the vtc actuator defect or the potential for complete engine failure. As I continued my investigation, I found a Honda service bulletin starting in 2016 (when my car was still under its three-year warranty) and updated in 2017 (when my car was still under its five-year power train warranty) describing the vtc actuator as defective. Had american Honda issued a recall at that time, instead of an sb, and had notified me of this defective part, my warranties in those years would have covered the replacement costs of my vtc actuator and related engine parts. And also been significantly less expensive. Flash forward to this fall 2025: as I continued my investigation, I discovered multiple class-action lawsuits against american Honda for this exact issue—a known defective vtc actuator. It turns out they conducted an internal study in 2011 that found the vtc actuator was defective. Now the dealership believes my car's failure was caused by a defective vtc actuator.

Service bulletin 16-012 was issued for 2013 crv for the vtc actuator. This is obviously an issue that Honda is aware of but is refusing to fix. I’ve had to replace this part twice at the same interval of time. The first replacement was covered under my warranty however now that I am out of warranty this repair costs almost 3,000$. I contacted american Honda who refuses to provide good will even though they are aware this is a known issue. I was advised that if this wasn’t repaired it would be a safety issue. I believe this should be covered on Hondas dime especially if this has to replaced multiple times at no fault of the customer.
Level for oil change was at 30%, took it in and it only had 2. 5 quarts of oil. No indication I was low, no oil leak, and it affected the valves. Honda of lisle said this is common issue with 4 cylinder models, yet there is no recall. Now I have to check my oil every week and add as needed, and will have an large bill to replace the engine. The vehicle has only 61,000 miles.

The engine and cooling system failed. Coolant is leaking into the engine, causing misfires, loss of power, and potentially leading to complete engine failure. The vehicle is currently at zimbrick Honda in madison, WI, and the engine is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle suddenly lost power while driving in traffic on multiple occasions. Each time, the vehicle slowed down unexpectedly and could not accelerate, creating a risk of being rear-ended, losing control in traffic flow, or becoming stranded in an active traffic lane. This sudden loss of power posed a serious danger to me and other drivers around me. Zimbrick Honda, an authorized Honda dealership, inspected the vehicle and confirmed coolant intrusion into the engine, repeated misfires, and loss of power. Their diagnosis concluded that the engine has failed and must be replaced. The vehicle has been inspected by the authorized Honda dealership (zimbrick Honda). American Honda reviewed my goodwill assistance request using the dealership’s diagnosis, but no separate manufacturer inspection was conducted. The vehicle has not been inspected by the police or insurance because no collision occurred. It remains at the dealership and is available for inspection. Before the complete engine failure, the vehicle experienced sudden loss of power, engine hesitation, and misfires. The check engine light appeared during the incidents. The first occurrence happened on August 19th, 2025, at approximately 109,356 miles.
All auxiliary safety system warning lights came on at once, with abs, tpms, collision avoidance and adaptive cruise all rendered inoperable. Dealer says faulty fuel injectors are to blame. . Read more...
A few weeks ago, my vehicle suddenly turned off at a stop light. For several weeks, it’s been feeling like it’s being forced to take off. Today, the car struggled to turn on and then turned off and all the lights came on. It happened three times. A year ago, I received a recall letter that the fuel pump needed to be replaced and that I would be notified when the parts arrived. When my car starting having issues, my mechanic said it might be the fuel pump. I contacted Honda to replace it and they said the recall had been closed. Now I’m having these issues with my vehicle and I’ve read online about it happening to several people who have owned 2018 Honda crvs.
I have Honda 2019 crv and didn’t get alert my head gasket is shot. No notice on my car overheating or any alert. Smoke coming from my car and Honda didn’t alert me. There is class action lawsuit against Honda right now about head gasket failure in my Honda 2019 crv. This rare issue for Honda crv and should be investigated for recall!.
We kept Honda crv exl 2017 on time repair by the Honda dealership ,never missed one deadline of repair as recommended by the Honda repair shop. Now they are saying that head gasket is blown and engine has jammed. How can head gasket go bad randomly when maintenance was done regularly by the Honda dealer, who is fault it is ? who should be paying for its repair?.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the message that the engine was reaching the max engine temperature and to pull over was displayed. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the ev water pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired three times. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on four times. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 122,000.
Traveling on 4 lane highway at 65 mph on slight upgrade-check engine light started flashing and vehicle started to shudder slightly and went into "limp" mode I think. Started to slow down with no power. Turned on emergency flashers and was able to pull over without incident, although it was close to causing an accident with a tractor trailer. I shut the vehicle down and after 10 minutes, started it again> I was able to drive home another 45 miles without incident. This happened a week ago and so far it hasn't happened again.
While driving at highway speeds almost a total loss of engine power occurred causing a safety issue. Five warning indicators lit at this time: tire pressure monitoring system malfunction indicator lamp (check engine) vehicle stability assist warning electric power steering warning this problem resulted in a Honda dealer service replacement of the high pressure fuel pump which cost me over $2800 and another $400 for a rental car. There was a recall for the 2017-2020 crv for an identical(?) issue. This 2016 may have been a later manufacture and had the same fuel pump. A very reputable local garage examined the car and were unwilling to repair the crv because they were quite familiar with the frequent and problematic Honda crv high pressure fuel pump issues. It was drellishak's service in rocky river ohio.
Back in July, my car started having the lights come on; it lit up the whole dashboard. The brake system, tire pressure, brake hold system, hill start, adaptive cruise control, etc. It affected the power of the vehicle. There was no acceleration at all. It was like it went in limp mode. This has happened numerous times. The other problem is starting it was making a hesitation to start. It would also start rough as in almost like a shake. We noticed that it was using antifreeze more often than it should and would get hot sitting still. That's when we took car to be inspected by a certified mechanic and that's when we found out that we needed a new engine due to antifreeze seeping into the engine.
