5 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2014 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 03/20/2019

The a/c compressor pulley bearing seal is broken/busted and is grinding causing a burning smell. The idler pulley bearing seal is broken/busted and is squealing. All the routine maintenance is up to date. This automobile is only 3 years old and already having problems with the basic engine components. Is this a rare case for this make and model or is it that Honda is no longer considered to be a reliable automobile?.

7 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 05/11/2018

I purchased a 2005 Honda crv in 2018 of February in ozark missouri. It went through a missouri safety check and passed a few months later I needed to come back to California and since I've been back within three months time my engine my belts my brakes my starter my electrical sensors my fuel they have all seem to have failed and been replaced by a mechanical I paid in December 2018 I received a recall notice to take my car in so the airbags can be checked the whole engine and exhaust system and electrical system need checking as well because it's not a safe car to drive and I've been feeling that for a couple of months. It started off as a good car but once I change the engine oil everything seem to malfunction and go down like dominoes car has failed to start several times has shut off without notice.

8 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2014 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 08/07/2017

This present day my car makes a sreaming noise like belt is bad they changed the belt the alternator and something else and they can not find the problem. I asked for a 2017 when I came in to buy a vehicle the dealer insisted on me getting this 2014 when I asked multipul times for a 2017 he said this is a good deal. The first day I got it 6/16/2017 the vibartion was bad I had to bring it back 6/17/2107 they had it 4 days. I picked it up and on the same day the lights were dimming. Sat moorning I reported the issue. 3pm I got in the vehicle to change my shift at work it would not start. The man who came to tow it could not start it on arivial. Mon 6/22/2017 I came in and demanded a new car like I requested when I came in because this vehicle was having to many problems for me to be paying $25,643. The dealer wanted to give me 1,000 less than I paid for it and charge me $32,300 for a Honda crv lx 4wd thats marked 27,285 online. I refused to pay that and felt like I am being cheated. He said the problem could be minor let them fix it. I am paying $25,643 for this car and its been in the shop 3xs within 2 months. They want me to keep this car and I keep requesting a 2017 because thats what I came in for and the dealer sat back in his chair and keap telling me the 2014 Honda exl is a good deal and did not show me the 2017 he wanted me to get the 2014 Honda crv exl when I wanted a 2017 lx special adition 4wd. South hills was honest they was giving me 2017 for 400 amonth at $27,285 when my credit came up and at the time it did it was fair.

9 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2015 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 04/19/2016

The contact owns a 2015 Honda Cr-v. While driving approximately 10 mph on a slope, the vehicle revved and did not stop when the brakes were applied. The contact slowly drove to the end of the slope and was able to stop. The vehicle was taken to three different dealers, but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was operating as designed. The failure recurred and was not remedied. Also, while driving approximately 15 mph on a different day, the alternator went out and the battery and check engine indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to another dealer where it was diagnosed and the alternator and drive belt were replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 14,600.

10 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2009 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 07/31/2015

On July 31, 2015, while exiting I-95 northbound crossing from the florida to georgia state line from high density high speed vacation traffic, my 2009 Honda Cr-v serpentine (drive) belt snapped. I immediately lost power steering and other functions associated with the drive serpentine belt. I was traveling at least 45 mph as I had just exited the highway; my knuckles were white I was grabbing the steering wheel so hard trying to assess, at high speed and with vehicles in front and behind me going the same speeds, how to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. My wife and two young girls were with me and I feared that me and my entire family were be seriously injured or killed. Subsequent inspection clearly identified a failed air-conditioning compressor clutch, that is the subject of Honda TSB 12-072 (service bulletin sb-10056005-7115), that my VIN is the subject of Honda's extended warranty associated with TSB 12-072. The compressor clutch caused the compressor to wind-up/damage the belt when it could not travel over the drive wheel of the compressor. The only warning we had, in hindsight, was we lost air conditioning earlier in our trip to florida and the ac was blowing warm air and there was a noise coming from the compressor area. My entire family was terrified by what happened here - this seems like a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety and should be a recall, not an extended warranty. I could have been killed. Had this happened on the highway 1 minute earlier, I could have been rear ended at high speed by car or, worse, truck. Given the numerous blog posts about this problem, and the Honda dealer service tech who said he said this is a common problem that can result in the drive belt getting destroyed by a failed ac compressor clutch, it seems that it should be a recall.

11 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 11/06/2014

I was driving along ,the car started making a noise like an airplane ,I pulled over ,there was an explosion in the engine compartment. On inspection it was found that the air conditioner compressor had a catastrophic failure. The job involved replacing the compressor, the condenser,receiver/dryer,expansion valve, contaminated drive belt, complete flush of the system, evacuation and recharge of system. Quite a costly repair at $2737. 02 there have been many complaints filed on this issue, and although it was not a safety issue, unless it had happened at speed on a busy freeway , it was clearly a defective component, that so many crv owners have experienced.

12 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 10/05/2013

On a 200 mile trip the air conditioner/ compressor locked up. I had just completed the 100,000 mile scheduled service which included the drive belt replacement. I was able to drive the vehicle back home as long as I didn't attempt to use the a/c or defroster. Obviously Honda has a problem with the compressors they are using in there vehicles. Hopefully dot will investigate the faulty equipment. My sister in law has also replaced two compressors in her 2006 Honda crv at lower mileage intervals. No more Hondas for me!.

13 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 09/07/2013

2002 Honda crv: I was making a turn from a stop light, into the freeway on ramp, and I heard a loud gear dragging sound from the engine compartment. I lost power steering and the car and it was pulling to the right. I immediately attempted to pull over just as I was ascending on to the on ramp, however the engine stalled and smoke was visible coming from the engine bay before I could safely pull over to the shoulder. I had to put the gear on neutral and push the car to the shoulder. It was nerve racking with my wife and two kids in the car. I noticed that fluid was leaking underneath the car. I inspected all the fluid levels and realized that it was from an air conditioner compressor failure, which caused the accessory belt to drag and stall the engine. The vehicle restarted but ac was not functional.

14 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2010 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 09/17/2012

Cr-v 2010 excessive oil consumption. Bought the car new. My husband drives the car to work every day for an hour. We start hearing a cranking noise coming form the engine in the cold mornings. We follow recommendations on oil changes and use synthetic oil. I check the oil regularly and add some when it needs it. I was amaze at how much oil it burn. I have had problems with excessive oil use and check engine light on two (2) dealerships recommended to replace timing belt timing chain tension and cam shaft. 62,000 miles car was driving very bad so I did the repairs $ 1,212. 40 . The dealership is telling me that's "normal". I have a Mini van Toyota with 273,000 miles never chance the timing belt/chain still running. Honda of America saying that burning a quart of oil every 1,000 miles is normal. That is unethical. I have done the 1,000 mile oil consumption tests when I went to the dealership and they said that my crv can burn up to a quart of oil every 1,000 miles and is nothing that they can help me. Now the car start smelling oil and gas when I check the oil level. They send a letter but Honda is not willing to do the repairs.

15 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

While decelerating on a highway exit ramp, I heard a large whirring noise coming from the right side of the engine compartment. Then a large bang from the engine compartment followed by a thumping noise which started in the engine compartment and ended bouncing underneath the body over several seconds. Stopped the car and looked underneath and on the road, but could not find any belts or material. Took the car into a Honda dealership who informed me that the ac was completely destroyed. The estimate to fix was over $4300 for the complete system which over $3000 was in parts. They informed me the banging noise was the compressor clutch locking then flying apart sending pieces through out the engine compartment. There was no mention of a thorough inspection of the rest of the engine or body for damage from the flying debris of the broken compressor clutch. The dealer indicated the alin Honda class action lawsuit was not settled and could not give estimates of possible payments.

16 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/09/2011

The engine suddenly accelerated in a parking garage. The brakes slowed the car on the first acceleration, but almost immediately the engine again revved-- to a shrill, loud sound like that of a jet engine. Result : car rammed into a support pillar in the garage; airbag deployed, and I was wearing my seat belt. Car may be totaled, still awaiting estimate from insurance. I spent 4 days in the hospital for surgery on my broken arm, multiple bruises and swollen face, and will not be able to drive for 3-4 months.

17 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 08/28/2011

On Sunday afternoon August 28th, my 2003 Honda crv had an engine fire. The only warning, was a rubbing sound when the car was started but no dash lamps prior to seeing the smoke and subsequent fire. Fortunately I was able to safely get my family out of the crv and put out the fire. Upon repairing the car at the local Honda dealer, they identified the ac compressor as the likely root cause of the fire based on melted clutch drive wires which appear to be the ignition source for the overheated drive belt. Since the 2 yr old ac compressor was a four seasons - everco 58881 replacement a/c compressor from auto zone, Honda was not interested in any further investigation but they did allow me to keep the damaged ac compressor and drive belt. I spoke with everco customer service however they said they would not deal with the public directly so I discussed this issue with the auto zone district service manager who made an internal inquiry and then said they could not initiate a claim because the component is outside the warranty period. I am disappointed that neither Honda, autozone nor everco are interested in a root cause investigation or providing any compensation. Fortunately no one was injured in this incident but other crv owners may be less fortunate. I have the damaged hardware and photos which can support an investigation.

18 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2007 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 07/18/2011

Engine and vsa warning lights came on for our 2007 Honda Cr-v. Honda dealer said it was our timing chain and that this was a typical problem with cars over 100,000 miles. Honda supposedly had solved this problem with their belts by going to the chain. Our car had 98,000 miles on it. The cost to fix this was $1,600. 00! driving the Cr-v right after this problem was fixed the tpms alarm came on. Now we have to pay even more to have this fixed and due to high repair costs cannot get fixed right away, so left driving without this safety system. Talked to dealer was no help and Honda of America was no help. They said it was because we did not change the oil as we should. The Honda Cr-v maintenance book said to change oil when the oil change warning light comes on, this is what we did each and every time, but Honda said we should change before that! why do they state to change when warning light comes on if this is not true?we bought this vehicle new because we thought it was reliable and low maintenance!.

19 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 03/20/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that the air conditioner compressor failed causing the serpentine belt to become faulty. While driving 45 mph, the contact stated that the vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. In 2005, the contact replaced the entire air condition system however, the vehicle continued to stall. The dealer advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing but informed her that she would be responsible for payment. The manufacturer informed the contact that they would not be able to provide her with any additional assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The current and failure mileages were 176,000.

20 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2008 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

2008 Honda crv. Consumer states while in reverse, there is a grinding noise coming from the right front wheel. The dealer determined that an engine mount stud was broken, a side mount was distorted and the a/c compressor pulley was touching the engine beam which resulted in sparks and/or an electrical problem. The a/c matter appeared to be associated with the engine having shifted some from the broken stud and distorted side mount.

21 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 05/02/2009

I have a 2003 Honda Cr-v. While driving on the interstate, the air conditioning stopped cooling. I took the car to my mechanic who said the compressor blew up and most likely contaminated the entire ac system. He referred me to the local dealership for further diagnosis and assistance. The Honda dealership confirmed the diagnosis. The entire ac system must be replaced. The local mechanic and dealership acknowledged that this is a known problem with Honda Cr-vs of the age of my vehicle. They even have a name for it which they put on the ticket - "black death". This is a safety issue because if I were going slow enough the engine could have stopped when the compressor broke apart. If I were on snow I could have skidded the tires or the belt could have broken or maybe slipped. The serpentine belt is very strong so there are times when this very well could be a safety issue. In my case, none of these circumstances happened but I felt this was a situation that must be reported since it is a known issue with these cars.

22 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 04/18/2009

On about April, 2009 in our 2001 Honda crv , with 68,000 miles on it. My wife was 60 miles from home when the air conditional blew up. The air compress, reciver dryer, belt all came to $1,600. I asked around and found out that a lot of crv's ac where blowing up. This site showes a lot of other people with this problem. . Read more...

23 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 03/12/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle's steering froze up while driving at 30 mph during wet road conditions. The problem usually occurred while making turns. The dealer was contacted who inspected the vehicle, but could not find the cause of the problem. The corporate office of dealer suggested that the vehicle be taken to an independent repair shop to have the belt changed. The vehicle was taken to the independent repair shop and had the belt replaced.

24 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/20/2005

My 2001 Honda crv had to have the cylinder head replaced after a flashing engine light came on. A Honda dealer stated there was low compression in the #3 cylinder. The repair was to replace the cylinder head (at >3200$). I found that this is a common problem with 1999-2001 Honda crvs. I now have at least 5 substantiated cases (my own, a colleague who owns a 1999 crv and, the complaint numbers on your site 10062616, 10124224, 10143720). There are also many unsubstantiated but identical claims on multiple websites that imply a fairly widespread manufacturers defect leading to this problem. The symptoms are the same. Honda appears to know of this defect as evidenced by their own TSB #03-038 that states the problem and repair. I asked Honda for a goodwill warranty (there is some precedence for this by Honda). I was told I would need complete service records . . . . These were provided. These records include a 60,000 mi service including a timing belt replacement that was done just the summer before (my vehicle had 82000 mi at the time of the engine failure). I was then told to contact Honda customer service to file a complaint where eventually I was told by Honda that they would not provide any assistance. The reason was that I did not get valve adjustments at the time of my 60000 mi service. These are hydraulic valves and according to my own mechanic and verified by another mechanic, this is not standard practice. This 'valve adjustment' recommendation is also not part of the mitchell oem recommendations also that were followed by my mechanic (TSB 03-038 is also not included). The outcome was to take my vehicle from Honda where they did not support their product despite what appears to be a known and widespread defect and bring it to my own mechanic. I have retained the part that appears to have caused much of the problem (damaged exhaust valve). I strongly suggest there be an inquiry into this problem and reimbursement for all costs associated with this repair.

25 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 08/04/2005

2003 Honda Cr-v 44,200 miles: bad bearing or pump noise starting coming from engine compartment, stopped and checked (noise varied with engine speed). Narrowed noise to area around ac compressor/alternator/belt tensioner. Operated vehicle less than 30 minutes from first appearance of noise, then there was a thud, and a clunk looked out the passenger side rearview mirror and saw a something rolling down the street. Noise went away, and ac stopped cooling. Went back to see what had fallen off, and found part of the clutch assembly. No apparent damage, vehicle operates minus ac. Took vehicle to dealer, was told that he has seen this a four or five times recently, and that he would contact Honda, to see what can be done. Was later told that Honda would cover the repairs.

26 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Concerns regarding fires following oil changes in 2003 crv. The passenger seat belt jammed and the drivers door lock failed.

27 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 08/26/2004

Consumer took vehicle to emissions test station, and was told that his failed the emissions test because it was misfiring. Consumer stated that emission officials gave him a paper that stated the codes that made his vehicle not pass the test. Consumer called the Honda dealer, and asked them to give him the meaning of the codes. When they did, and he asked what they meant, he was told that basically they meant that engine was misfiring. Consumer noticed that transmission was shifting weirdly, but he did not pay any attention to it. However, warranty expired.

28 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 05/24/2004

Honda Cr-v(2004) a/c compressor: I was driving down the hwy and it sounded as if I had a flat tire, at that point my a/c stopped blowing cold air. I continued driving, thinking that I had to get my a/c recharged. Then I heard a loud clunk, swerved off an exit (my steering wheel locked up) and my car began smoking. I pulled into the nearest parking lot, and discovered that the serpentine belt was broken. The belt broke b/c the compress had exploded, causing the clutch to lock up. The cost of the repair was $1400. The whole system had to be replaced: condenser, compressor, expansion valve.

29 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 04/28/2004

We were normally driving the vehicle when a strange noise started under the hood. Upon investigation you could observe the main pulley wobbling. The vehicle was immediantely brought to a repair facility. Upon inspection it was found that the bolt from the main pulley into the crankshaft was damaged. When a wrench was placed on the bolt it broke off. It was apparent that this bolt was installed stripped which resulted in this failure. Pictures of the bolt are available. The vehicle was towed to a Honda dealership. After numerous phone calls, Honda USA did agree to split the cost to replace the crankshft. My share was $1270. 09. I realize that the warranty was 36 months / 36000 miles and the vehicle did achieve this. But at 46579 miles and 72 months a main component on a properly maintained vehicle should not fail. Particularly when it is apparent the bolt responsible for this was incorrectly installed or failed.

30 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 01/21/2004

Vehicle fire regarding 2003 Honda crv. There was overheating of the electrical components that caused the fire. The consumers wife was locked in the burning vehicle. The locks remained activated and would not open from the inside or the outside, even though the ignition was off. The entire vehicle had become filled with heavy black smoke along with the instrument panel warning lights flashing. The consumer was informed that the damage found was consistent with a high resistance condition occurring in the crankshaft sensor oil control solenoid circuit wiring resulting in electrical overheating, resulting in a fire. Minor heat and fire damage was sustained to the right front area of the engine starting near the crankshaft pulley extending upwards towards the valve cover area. Upon examination of the fuse/relay center located in the passenger compartment revealed a 15 amp fuse protecting the ecu circuit was blown consistent with a component and or electrical failure within this circuit. According to the technical report, the fire began in the engine compartment and was considered an accident not a manufacturer defect.

33 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 08/24/2002

The timing belt broke 2500 miles before first scheduled maintenance causing the car to break down on the freeway, thankfully we were stuck in traffic otherwise the results could have been much worse! the dealer is now telling me I need a new engine for 7000. 00 dollars. If I had been told to change the belt sooner I would have done so. I follow the maintenance shcedule in my owners manual because it clearly states that failure to do so can cause injury or even death caused by an accident due to equipment failure. If the manual says 105k miles to change the timing belt, it should be expected to last until 105k miles. We are not talking about a headlight here, this failure caused my entire car to sieze up on me. The entire car shut off including steering and power brakes. Thank god I was not going 65mph. Thank you for your time.

34 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Honda CR-V

Consumer cited the poor or lack of service by the dealership as well as the poor quality of his vehicle. The consumer had several problems with the vehicle. When the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for a routine oil change, the cap was not tightened properly which caused a significant oil leak. The vehicle failed to start on another occasion, it was determined that the fuel pump failed, which has since failed again. The vehicle had a flat tire, when the consumer went to change the tire, she noticed the vehicle did not have a jack. The timing belt was replaced, however when the consumer proceeded to drive there was a strange noise coming from under the hood, the consumer discovered the belt tensioner was not properly adjusted. The parking brake was adjusted. The transmission did not shift properly, the rear differential fluid was replaced, the right cv boot was leaking and the turn signals did not cancel.
