While driving to portland, or. From wa heard a loud squeal from the front of the engine. Turns out the a/c compressor is burned out at 84k miles. Honda said it was my problem and not a safety concern. The one serpentine belt drives the water pump, power steering pump, alternator and the a/c compressor at the bottom of the engine. The portland dealer would not advise me to drive it at all. If the belt burns off do to the a/c compressor seizure the power steering pump would stop possibly causing a serious accident.

After 5 years of problem free driving, my crv started making a loud rattling sound after driving for about 10 minutes. I tried turning the blower fan off , then air conditioner off and realized it was the ac making the noise. I left the ac off from then on and took the car to the closest dealer the very next day. They told me the compressor had "seized" and that metal particles had been forced throughout the entire ac system. The repairs for this were quoted at $2650. I then saw on the internet where there were 678 posts of the same problem in different year crv's and that Honda had reimbursed a few of them. I feel like this must be a very prevalent problem with crv's and there should be some sort of reimbursement, because a car without ac is pretty much worthless.
The air conditioning compressor on my 2004 Honda crv internally disintegrated causing damage to the complete system according to my local Honda dealer. The service department told me this is a wide spread problem with the crv's.
Air conditioning failure on 2004 Honda crv. Working fine, suddenly stopped cooling. Told I had to replace compressor and other parts as it imploded was the word used. Metal, etc all in system. The service manager denied this was a common problem. The cost of the repair will be around $2400. It seems clear this is a well documented issue.
2008 Honda crv-compressor needs replacing 65,000 miles at the time the compressor went out. Honda warranty only covers 36,000 miles. Did not by extended warranty. Has not replaced part due to cost. Honda purchased at paris Honda has talked to them however, 1200 dollars for a rebuilt compressor to be installed and much higher for a new one. This is robbery and poorly built compressors. Is it alright from them to charge so much money for a vehicle with sorry service and parts?? if they are having so many compressor problems why not recall them all and fix the problem. I will never by another Honda and when asked I advice any one to stay away from the auto brand.

Vehicle is 2002 Honda Cr-v with 44,300 miles
a/c compressor had to be replaced at great expense. After reading all the posts online, it appears to be a defect that Honda refuses to acknowledge. I want to join any class action lawsuits regarding this matter.

My auto a/c was blowing hot air. Mechanic determined the compressor was frozen and the clutch damaged. Repairs were done at a cost of $1250. 15. It appears to be an ongoing problem with Cr-vs which Honda refuses to acknowledge as a defective part. I have retained the defective compressor.
2004 Honda crv air conditioning system suddenly stop working.
My a/c compressor in my 2006 Honda crv blew up causing damage to the entire air conditioning system. This happened on a 9 hour trip through texas summer heat with young children in the back seat. After doing some research on the internet I found out that it is a common problem among second generation crvs. Honda is selling these cars knowing that the compressor is defective and has not issued a recall and they refuse to pay for the full cost of repair. In addition, a repair does not guarantee that it won't happen again.

I purchased my 2002 Honda Cr-v ex new & have had all of the recommended services performed by my local Honda dealer. Around 7/12/2006, my a/c stopped working at 57,023 miles. The power switch made a strange clunking noise & the a/c failed to start right away. I immediately turned the switch off & back on. The fan came on, but only blew out hot air. I took it to my regular Honda dealer & paid $153. 40 to have them check the a/c system out. The diagnosis was the a/c system was dead & it would cost me another $1,600 to replace the compressor, coil set & clutch set. I shopped around & had another shop that only works on Hondas and acuras do the same work recommended by my Honda dealer at a cost of $1,203. 52. They used genuine Honda parts to make the repair & gave a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty. My car now has 95,000 miles. On 7/11/2009, my a/c was working fine when I parked my Cr-v. The next afternoon, the a/c was only blowing warm air when I turned my car back on. I started looking on-line to see if there had been any recalls for this particular problem. That is when I realized I have a serious problem on my hands. There are numerous complaints for the same problem. On 7/30/2009, I called american Honda to see if there were any recalls. They basically do not acknowledge any problem. Because my car is out of warranty, they can't do anything for me. I explained this is the second time in 95,000 miles the a/c has gone out. He said they can't help me because I did not have the 1st repair done by my Honda dealer, even though the mechanic who did the work was certified by macs & ase in refrigerant recycling & service procedures and used genuine Honda parts. On 7/30/2009, I took my Cr-v to my Honda dealer to get an estimate. The compressor is dead again. The estimate is approx. $1,600 to fix it. The service mgr. Is going to try to work with his district manager to see if they can get american Honda to help me. I am still waiting to hear.
2003 Honda crv total ac failure and contamination caused by compressor failure. Replaced under warranty at 30,000 miles. Occurred again at 55,000 miles. The second most recent time came with a loud bang and sound of loss of parts. Did not notice items on ground after going back, but there was a great amount of green slippery fluid which was released. I assume that to be the oil from the compressor. Also would assume it spilled onto roadway.

Defective coolant systems.
2005 Honda Cr-v. Condenser fan motor shorting out. Some have even burnt wires in the harness to this motor. After seeing this problem on one of my customers cars and finding out that the dealers have seen several of these and even worse I seem to find this to be a large problem with Honda's.
The ac air compressor clutch on my 2002 Honda crv fell out while I was coming to a stop at a light. Fortunately, no one was hurt. I do not know if there was any other damage to the car from this incident especially any other internal components or parts. I took it to a Honda dealer. They want to charge me over 1200 to install new one air compressor. I asked whether their was any recall on this part, they said no because it did not fall under emissions or safety. He also mentioned that since I'm not the original owner of the car and it has over 130,000 miles, warranty won't cover it. I'm going to get a second opinion from another auto mechanic.
I have a 2002 Honda Cr-v that had 135,000 miles at the time the compressor imploded. American Honda is aware of the issue. The compressor implodes, shooting shards of metal throughout the ac system, resulting in expensive replacement of parts other than the compressor. Essentially the entire ac system needs to be rebuilt at a cost in the neighborhood of $2500-3500 (my bill came to $3100). American Honda refused to pick up the tab on any of the parts or labor associated with this repair. If you google "Honda+air+compressor+failure" you will find many, many reports of this issue, all reported to american Honda.
I own a 2004 Honda Cr-v. It has just 51,000 miles on it. Air conditioner compressor started making rattling sound . I understand if it breaks apart as it normally does, it sometimes can stop the motor if you were going slow enough. If you were on snow, it could skid the tires or the belt could break or maybe slip. The serpentine belt is very strong so there are times when this very well could be a safety issue.
Ac compressor blew up causing extensive damage to the entire ac system. Compressor sent metal pieces through entire system after it blew up. Quoted over $3000 from Honda for repair. Called american Honda and they refused to help stating it is bc the car has over 36,000 miles. However, hundreds of people on the internet were helped by Honda with the same mileage as my crv. It makes no sense. I believe that if anything is "blowing" up under the hood of my car (as Honda described it) it is a safety issue. Honda should take responsibility for something they know is a problem. . Read more...
Honda 2003 crv with 52,000 miles. Aircon just broke suddenly failed to blew cold air. Contacted american Honda but they wont admit that this is a known problem for crv owners even though there's a lot of same complaints already for the air con system of crv 2003.
The air conditioning on my 2003 Honda Cr-v suddenly began to blow warm air and make noise under the hood. I took it to the dealer where I purchased the car and they said it was my compressor and replaced both the clutch and compressor for $1400. The service tag says "compressor has an internal failure repl compressor assy" so this failure was not due to road debris.
Heard a very load noise under the car and metal debris flew all over the road while driving at 65mph, then the air conditioning stopped working on my Honda crv ex (2004 model/50,000 mi). I was very concerned with my 5 month old baby in the backseat and had to slow down on the highway to see if something was wrong with the tire. I brought the car to the Honda dealer where we purchased the car and have taken it to service since we bought it. They quoted that the compressor had a hole and the metal pieces that shattered went through the entire a/c system requiring a complete replacement of the entire system (cost of $3500). When we complained that the cost was so high and poor quality for a car that was only a few years old, they replied "that's not our problem and you should have bought the extended warranty. " after doing more research online, we discovered that thousands of Honda owners have had the same problem raising safety concerns and the need for Honda to take action. This is clearly a manufacturing or design defect that should be addressed by Honda.
I own a 2003 Honda Cr-v with only 54,400 miles and the a/c just stopped working. I just took my car to midas shop to get a/c recharge. I was told after inspection that there is a leak on the a/c compressor. The cost to repair will be close to $1400.
A/c compressor issue, compressor explodes sending metal fragments through out rest of system corrupting entire a/c system. Dealer looked at it and knew pretty well right off whole a/c system had to replaced.
Air conditioner failed to function requiring a $3,875. 00 repair. Upon investigation Honda knows about this defective part but refused to pay for the repair.
The contact owns a 2004 Honda crv. While driving 45 mph, the compressor blew out. In addition, the condensor is defective and there are extensive failures with the pipes, hoses, and clutch. The dealer stated that the entire cooling system must be replaced. The compressor has been repaired by a dealer. The equipment is all original. The failure mileage was 43,000 and current mileage was 45,000.
Air conditioning compressor failed in my 2004 Honda crv. Dealership wants $1900 plus tax to replace system. There seem to be thousands of complaints about this issue in online forums. The failure causes the entire air conditioning system to have to be replaced. This is everything except the knobs. The dealership stated that the compressor was too small and that this one reason for failure. The dealership stated that the 2003 and 2004 crvs have major problems with air compressors. Honda USA is only willing to reduce the replacement cost from $3039 plus tax to $2537 plus tax. The dealership was willing to reduce it down to $1900.
Purchased 2003 Honda crv in Feb 2003. Clutch snapped off ac compressor April 2005 - covered by warranty. February 2009 ac compressor imploded sending metal shavings into engine. Estimate to repair $3600. Waiting for dealership to advise if they will pay for all or part under "goodwill".
With out any warning the radiator cracked and had to be replaced. Auto repair said it was a common problem with Honda. New models are being replaced but not earlier models. Why is Honda not forced to recall these with so many cars needing costly repairs. ?.

The a/c compressor of my 2003 Honda crv locked up and it needs to be replaced. The failure occur at about 64,000 miles.
Have a 2004 crv. Compressor locked up and broke off clutch from compressor. The compressor imploded damaging the overall ac unit. The hole system has to be replaced. I contacted Honda dealer in daytona. Estimated repair charges will be $3,000. 00. I surprise since there has been so many complaints on your web site why the NHTSA has not force Honda into a recall .
Within the past year I have had both fans go out because the entire system was "contaminated. " also, the fan under the dash (the blower) has quit and I needed a new relay switch. They split the cost of the two fans in the engine compartment but they said the fan under the dash was separate. Altogether it cost me over 1800 dollars. Now I find out that there have been 35 complaints about the air conditioning system in the 2003 crv. I think it is a factory problem and they should have a recall. . . . . And give me back some of that money. 35 complaints?? isn't that enough to signal a recall??.
Air compressor exploded on 2003 Honda crv. Honda will only pay for half the damage, and this seems to be a documented problem with this particular part. If Honda has an ongoing issue with this part, they should either recall the part or pay for the entire cost of replacement. Here is a link showing 22 pages of this same problem occurring with others. . Read more...
I have a 2003 Honda Cr-v and the a/c compressor died after some rattling sounds while on the highway. The dealer wants $3200 to fix it. My research on line and in talking to repair shop tells me this is not an unusual problem. I am told multiple parts have to be replaced when the compressor goes in this model. This seems to be a design flaw. I feel Honda should have to recall and pay for this design flaw.
I have a Honda Cr-v 2002. On 09-22-2008 the a/c compressor exploded. I went on-line and checked this issue. It was a Honda factory defect which cause a lot of compressor failure. . Read more...
2003 Honda Cr-v bought new. Air conditioning condenser just went out - looks like clutch went then the compressor blew. In looking at other sites, lots of people are having this problem. Following their advice and putting this in.
The ac compressor locked up on 9/13/08. The car has approximately 44300 miles. The car is still drivable without the ac. The dealer quoted $3000 for parts and labor because the failure of the compressor created other problems and all the lines have to be replaced. Fortunately, I have an extended 72 month/72k mile warranty which should cover all but $100 deductible. An adjustor must first approve the repairs, so it will be several days because this happened on a Saturday.
