My 2016 Honda crv is making a rattling noise that sound like its coming from the engine when I start the car and when im driving it. According to your website there is a recall campaign for "certain 2016 Hondas" that have the same noise as mine thats caused by the connecting rod bearing which can cause engine failure. "why is my car not part of this recall. " this car is driven by me and my wife as a family car. If your inveatigaton reveals that the noise in my car is the same noise in the cars involved in the recall then I am requetsting that the 2016 Honda crv be added to the recall list ASAP. I have had no work done on the car relating to the is noise. Thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Loud rattling noises with associated strong unsettling vibrations come into the cabin. These vibrations and rattling noises have been very distracting. The rattling noises begin at a low volume and become quite loud. The associated vibrations make me feel very uncomfortable. These distractions certainly distract me from driving safely and are a safety hazard.

Rattling sound coming from the engine on cold crank. This started subtle but has progressively gotten worse.
Engine vibration at idle and engine noise when starting in the cold. When hot, whining noise inside by timing chain area. Sent 5 times for repair at paragon Honda and the situation was never fixed and every time sent, they keep the car in the dealer for one week and an extra week in hillside Honda. My car has 23,700 miles and have all services done at paragon Honda and at hillside Honda and the noises continue. I contacted american Honda and the situation is never resolved yet they know about the issue.
Engine makes a rattling noise when accelerating. Every single time the accelerator is being pushed, I hear a rattle. I am just coming back from the local mechanic who told me that this could be something related to engine and is going to cost 2000 or more and just did a oil treatment to the engine just to see if that would help before doing an open heart surgery(messing with engine). I hope Honda comes back and fixes this problem as it is so common with so many of their 2014 Honda crvs.

Purchased vehicle from my mother-in-law. She had noticed the rattling sound but her mechanic said his did the same thing and not to worry about it. We immediately noticed that vehicle grinds on cold startup. Is starting to rattle a little on acceleration. Called my Honda dealer, told me it would be $1000 to replace the vtc actuator. He also said that it would eventually happen again, and that it doesn't harm the engine so we shouldn't worry about it. Researching online uncovered a service bulletin (09-010) for crv's up through 2013, but not covering 2014. Honda is not solving their engineering problem and are making the consumer pay for it.
Vehicle began making a rattling noise upon cold starts. Took to the dealer and was told the car needed a vtc actuator for a cost in excess of $1,000. A quick google search described wide spread issues with this part and that it is a recurring issue and could damage timing chain for costs in excess of $5k. Honda serv bulletin 16-012 describes issues but Honda does not cover under engine warranty. Very costly defect for a make of car that has had a good reputation.
My 2014 Honda crv just crossed 87,000 miles, started with engine rattling noise during cold start, and now got the check engine, steering and traction lights turned on on the dashboard. I took it mechanic and after performing diagnosis they told me that the vtc actuator and timing chain needs replacements. I came to know that it was due to manufacturing defect on the faulty vtc actuator as mentioned in technical service bulletin 16-012. . Read more...
Last winter, my car would make a rattling noise every time I started the car. I read online that during cold weather, this could happen. Now the spring and summer have gone by and the rattling still continues every time I start my car after the car has been idle for a little bit. I have further read that the vtc actuator needs to be replaced however, I am still seeing reports that the rattling reappears after a couple months even after replacing it. This is clearly a defect and should be free to replace (vs paying 800 dollars) considering it doesn't guarantee to fix the issue.

2012 Honda Cr-v. When the vehicle is started, an abnormal loud rattling noise is heard coming from the engine. There are no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Honda city dealer located in levitown NY where it was diagnosed that the vtc actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired at a cost of $750 to the owner. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no assistance was provided to repair the defective part. The noise appeared when the car was only 3 years old and the dealer was contacted by phone but said there was no permanent fix yet and to call back when the noise got louder. The failure mileage was approximately 51,000 which was less than the warranty milage of 60,000. Honda is aware of this defective part that can cause further engine damage or failure but no recall has been issued. Poor response by Honda.

When I start my 2014 Honda crv in the morning in idle and until I hit over 15 mph it makes a rattle noise, but more of a knocking under the valve cover area. We have done the oil changes every time the on-board oil life reminder tells me. During the winter, I take it to Honda during the summer my husband and I choose to change it. The noise has become considerably worse so we went online to review. All associations with the problem point to the vtc actuator and timing change. After calling to make an appt at the dealer and explain my problem I hear the cost to fix it referring to the service bulletin 16-102. It was well over $2000. The issue before I pay that to fix it is that all of the people I read in the online community state it is a temporary fix and the problem comes right back. Some have had the vtc changed four times. That would cost me $8000, a beautiful chunk of change to put down on a new car. Not a Honda. Just like the airbag issue with my 2004 Honda crv, they had to replace the replacement until they got it right. I urge you to please notify Honda of all our complaints (I uploaded a community forum) I can not afford to keep chasing down this defective part. My 2007 Honda prelude has over 300k and is a daily driver with a niece. My 2014 and 2016 Honda crv are happy every driver. Snow beats if you may. I wanted a newer car with newer features, but what I got was an expensive defective Honda. I paid $15000 two years ago, and it is now just under 100,000 miles. There used to be a saying, you could drive a Honda to the point of the body falling off, but the engine would keep going. Not only is my vtc a sore spot to fix. It is now using oil between oil changes due to a defective vtc. So I will change it once and if it continues. I will be back with another urge for justice.
Rattling noise for 1 to 3 seconds when starting the vehicle this occurs randomly since purchase. Have talked with dealer with they say its starter ($863 not under warranty. If I turn key and let sit for a few minutes and then start the engine - no metal noise. Contact America Honda - no call or communication yet.
Rattle noise on cold start up. Vtc actuator replaced under warranty and now same problem again after 10;000 miles. From my reading and speaking to several auto mechanics, this is a common problem with this model of car and it seems like Honda of America has not taken responsibility for addressing this problem adequately. I think a recall of this engine or an extension of the warranty should be required.
Engine metal rattling noise on cold start up. Very disturbing. Engine has a rough start as result.
Tl the contact owns a 2018 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated to accelerate to higher speeds. The contact stated that there was a leak coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to umansky Honda (960 hilton heights rd, charlottesville, va 22901, (888) 686-9143) where the transmission was replaced, the oil pan was replaced and resealed, and the bell housing was repaired. The contact stated that after the repairs were performed, there was an abnormal rattling sound underneath the vehicle. The dealer was not contacted nor was the manufacturer made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 7,000.

The vtc is making a rattling noise on a cold start up. This started out of nowhere and has not gone away. My car is parked in a garage at home and is parked outside at work but will do the same no matter what.
Engine makes a rattle noise on cold start up. Car was taken to dealership and was told the vtc actuator was defective and was replaced under warranty at 83000 miles. This was in August of 2017. It is now January of 2018, car now has 90355 miles and the rattle noise has returned. Will take the car back to the dealership this week to see what will be done next. From what I have researched, Honda has not come up with a real fix. This problem has been going on for several years for previous models. Come on NHTSA, put some heat on these guys.
Engine rattle noise upon cold start.
The engine makes a rattling noise when the car is turned on in cold weather, usually when it is first turned on in the morning. I live on the gulf coast, so it really doesn't even get that cold down here, but I have noticed this on multiple "cold" mornings (temperatures maybe in the 40s). I noticed several other people have reported this problem. I don't know if it is causing damage to the car, but it does not sound good.
After owning for 5 years, during winter months a loud rattle sounded each and every time the motor was turned on. It did not matter if engine was cold or not. I took to dealer who said for $699 they would try and fix but no guarantees and could still exist. I spoke to different mechanic who said if I continued without getting it repaired, it could ruin the engine. I called the corp office to be told that there was not a recall because they did not have a replacement. I was forced to sell the car. I am looking for compensation.
Engine rattles on cold start. Ties to their service bulletin 09-010 issue. This was reported to suburban Honda novi 7/18/2016 when car mileage was 59716. Car was returned indicating this issue could not be replicated. Service buletin dates back to March 17 2016. How did suburban Honda not recognize this as the issue when I first reported to them on 7/18/2016? today 8/16/17 this issue has coumponded. Every time car is started after kept idle of more than an hour the rattle sound is real lud. Local technician, paul's automotive said yesterday, it is real impoartant it be looked at by Honda. So takin it to suburban Honda today 8/16/17.
Takata recall : when I start the car and keep ac on, rattling sound comes and ac stops working. I can see there is one recall for 2002- 2008 Honda crv for clutch and ac compressor recall. Published on Jun 6, 2014 if you own a Honda Cr-v between 2002 - 2008 then you will encounter a common problem with the ac compressor clutch not engaging properly due to the location and overheating of this part. Need help. Thanks!.

Cold weather engine starts with rattle sound vtc actuator issue.
As like other reports my car has been making a large rattling sound for years and it's getting worse and from what I've looked up it can be very bad and expensive to repair and Honda needs to look into why this is happening to our cars and do a recall because this should not be our responsibility to pay for a defect. I am assuming it is the same vtc actuator that needs to be replaced and possibly the timing chain which is extremely expensive to replace.
When it's cold outside and if the car has set for more than a few hours, the car makes a terrible rattling sound when the engine starts.
Loud metallic rattle noise on cold start-up. Honda dealer found Honda service bulletin 09-010 issued, but no fix for this problem has been issued to date.
I noticed a rattling noise during cold starts from the engine that continued well into the summer. I reported it to my Honda dealer (bill page/falls church, va) and referred to the well documented vtc actuator problem reported on the internet based on video and audio similarities in the noises I was hearing. The dealer being aware of the problem refrained from any investigation or correction until they received a corrective solution from Honda. I reported the problem to Honda America and the dealer later in 2015 after my Honda dealer technician reptd no solution has come from Honda. I received a call from Honda regarding my complaint suggesting the vtc actuator problem is limited to alaska and I should make an appointment with my dealer to investigate. As a result to a switch to synthetic oil at the dealer the noise seems to have gone. Unfortunately this does not guarantee the original problem has not damaged the engine or won't reappear if I decide to return to conventional oil. The official position by Honda vs. The dealer seems to promote a stand-off to compensate for a lack of a fully reliable solution in that the dealer is told not to initiate repairs for this problem until a solution is distributed by Honda while Honda claims the problem is not universal and is trying to minimize its scope; leaving consumers in the middle trying to make their crvs or other model Hondas reliable while still under warranty. I will continue pursuit of a fix with Honda America but feel NHTSA should pressure Honda to address this well known and publicized fault with some sort of permanent fix. For a manufacturer who claims their vehicles are highly reliable Honda apparent deception regarding this problem needs to be addressed and I hope NHTSA forces this action to occur. I also provided NHTSA with a copy of my 7/25/15 letter to american Honda.
On the first start of the day, especially cold days, the engine makes a loud grinding/rattling noise. The dealership claims that there isn't a fix for the issue. It claims that it is a design flaw and doesn't hurt the engine. According to them, the oil drains from the part overnight and the "noise" is caused by lack of oil to that part. As soon as the part gets oil it stops. (about 2-3 seconds) according to research I've done on the internet, the issue has been ongoing for several years without a fix and is somewhat common. I bought the car in April and didn't experience the problem until late fall. It took me months to prove to the dealership that there was a problem. Shame on Honda. I've owned Honda cars and have been loyal to Honda for 25 years, but no longer.
Honda crv 2012 when starting the care in the morning, engine makes a rattling noise after it starts. This has been happening for the past year or so, on a daily basis. Of late, it happens in the evening as well. I. E) whenever the car has not been running for a couple of hours. The Honda dealership is saying that there is no bulletin from american Honda company on this, in order to fix the issue. And that this is not causing any damage to the engine. However, I see a service bulletin issued in October 2012 specifically for this, and it is stored on the NHTSA. Dot. Gov website. Service bulletin 2012 american Honda motor CO. , inc. ¿ all rights reserved atb 41171-48259 (1210) 1 of 6 October 6, 2012 09-010 spoke to american Honda customer service and they clarified that they had updated that bulletin since then. They are advising the dealers to not apply those steps and have removed it as a recommendation (since 2013) to fix the engine rattle noise. They are deeming this as a "noise irritant". And asked us to check back in 4 months from now. However, on a product such as this car, the appearance is important. Right now, it sounds like I am driving a clunker! also, the concerns are: a) damage to the engine / actuator is still happening? b) is it safe to start the engine despite rattling noise? c) engine might eventually not start at all d) a loose part might destroy the engine while driving on a highway and result in an accident! thanks!.
September 2014, 2014 Honda crv with ~6k miles started making a loud rattling noise upon first turning ignition switch over. It continued randomly upon starting for only 1-2 seconds & stops. As the weather got colder, it happened more often. Took my car to the dealer on 10/15/14 & made them keep the car overnight to replicate problem. Problem was duplicated & determined to be variable timing control (vtc) actuator; car was under warranty & fixed. December 2014 w/ ~13k miles same issue resurfaced. Contacted dealership 01/14/15, had them pull up 10/15/14 repair work to reference stated same issue is going on. I was told, ". . . You will need to speak w/ our service manager xxxx as the mfg'r is aware this is a problem w/ thousands of cars like yours & they are choosing to not do any further repair work for this problem bc it will continue to happen if repaired & they don't know how to fix it. . . ". I was then transferred to service mgr & left voicemail. 01/14/15 no response from svc mgr, to speak w/ him again; this time I was not allowed to leave a voicemail & svc tech took my info & said she would put it on a post-it note on xxxx's computer to have him give me a call back. This is a known problem w/ Honda's going back to 2008 inclusive of TSB published doc's which dealers dismiss unless consumers brings them up, of which dealers play dumb to not knowing what the car owners are talking about. The problem is not fixable, only temporarily derailed until repair becomes necessary again. The mfg'r is forebidden to fix the car until they work on a suitable 'counter' measure. Faulty vtc actualtor affects engine timing, fuel efficiency, electrical, mechanical, and batter life of vehicle, potential causing electrical fires which can be deadly. .
A loud start rattling noise at cold start. Now it rattles while driving as well.

The contact owns a 2012 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle after being idle for an extended time, the contact heard a rattling noise from the engine. The vehicle was taken for diagnosis where the contact was advised that the vtc actuator would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer several times. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure but did state that the vehicle was consuming more than 2. 5 quarts of engine oil within a 15 day span. The manufacture was contacted and stated that they would further investigate the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000. The current mileage was 26,492.
Loud rattling noise at cold start up.
Loud rattling noise from engine upon starting the vehicle; had Cr-v towed to lia Honda in enfield, CT; lia said either engine fire or misfired spark plug - couldn't tell for sure, but that it shouldn't have happened and that I did nothing to cause it; machine shop is investigating to determine if cylinder head, which was melted, can be repaired, or if replacement is needed; checking for additional engine damage; investigation by lia is underway - so unsure how this will end.
