Honda CR-V owners have reported 30 problems related to engine stall (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda CR-V based on all problems reported for the CR-V.
Since new, engine intermittently stalls for a several seconds and then recovers with a burst of acceleration. Happens mainly at intersections when stopped or rolling at a very slow speed and turning either left or right. Dealer cannot diagnose the problem, and I cannot purposely duplicate the problem at will. However, it averages happening every approximately once per week. It happened 4/2/2021, on a heavy traffic loop and caused a fender bender accident. This could have been a major accident resulting in serious injury or death. After investigation, I find engine stalling is a common problem with this model Honda.

Emissions issue detected, then eventual error codes diagnosed as p0172 and p291f. Replaced fuel injectors and high pressure pipe under service bulletins 10=8-025, 18-027, and 19-015. This is a common issue that should be addressed through a redesign and recall. Failure of this component could cause the engine to stall unexpectedly, causing a safety issue.

In the winter, I noticed a reduction in power from the vehicle. The engine began to run rough and stalled a few times in parking lots. There was the smell of gas and sulfates coming through the vents. The oil level was very high. I took the car to the dealer and they changed the oil. Four months later with normal use of the vehicle, the smell of gas is again coming through the vents, the engine seems to be running rough again, and the oil level is high. I fear the vehicle will stall in a dangerous situation, and the fumes in the cabin make me feel sick.
Engine stalled after more than 2 hours highway drive; after 20 minutes break the engines ran again; this problem happened twice over last 2 weeks.
The problem I am facing with my vehicle is when it is motion, sometimes it loses strength in the engine. This also happens when I try to climb high elevation roads. Looking on the web I found my issue in the following recall "17v305000" and the description is the following: "the reduced performance may result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. " I have taken my vehicle to the dealer, triangle Honda, and I have followed all its recommendations of arrangement which have been the following: replacement of the starter, replacement of spark plugs, replacement of injectors, change of engine oil, etc . . . None of the following nothing they have recommended and repaired has solved the problem. I ask you with favor and with great respect that due to the seriousness of the situation, which can lead me to an accident, consider adding my vehicle to the recall "17v305000" because according to the summary of it it needs a replacement of the engine. Thanks for your attention kenneth alvarez.

We are experiencing a smell of gas in the cabin. The has been an ongoing issue since we purchased it brand new. At first we thought we stepped in gas and the smell was from our shoes. After more headaches and research, we are realizing that this is a common problem with the 2017 and 2018 Cr-v's. Another related problem we are having is that the engine occasionally stalls upon starting. We park the car in a garage. While at work, the car is parked outside. I went out to the car and tried to start it and the engine was hesitant to start and sounded like I was trying to start a car with a dead battery. It lagged and after three attempts the car started. This has happened to me a total of three times during the winter. Each incident was a separate occasion. Each time was after the car was parked outside for a few hours.
The vehicle has a known issue by Honda with unsafe levels of oil dilution in the 1. 5 cvt turbo engine. Gas is mixing in with the oil, causing oil levels to rise. The fumes of gasoline are entering into the cabin space and making it unsafe to breathe. The engine is also having stalling issues due to gas mixing in with the oil in the engine area. This also has an issue with the ability to keep the car warm and providing adequate heat into the cabin area. The components of this engine are unsafe for cold weather climates such as the northeast. The car can not warm up the engine sufficiently at idle and therefore will not blow any hot air into the cabin area. The manufacturer states the car needs to be operating at highway speeds for approximately 10 minutes to gain sufficient engine warmth. This is not acceptable, as many owners of this vehicle have families and children, and we make short trips back and forth. For the car to be cold and blow cold air and not be able to warm up is a failure by the manufacturer to provide a safe vehicle. Honda case number 06673515.
The car is stalling from taking off from a stop. It's has been determined there is fuel getting into the oil pan causing the engine to stall at times, making merging into traffic unsafe.
Oil engine deluted with gas. Mixed oil level rises 1 inch every 3000-5000 miles. When reaches 22mm above "max" mark on the dip stick then "check engine" light comes on and engine stalls. Honda recalled 380000 units in china for the very same issue. Here in us they do nothing except risking the life of their customers. Shame ! forums and youtube are full with the same complain even some tv news channels mentioned it. Honda , please fix your problematic engine and compensate the Cr-v owners and/or buy back your overpriced junk.
1. Excessive white exhaust fumes while driving (10/15/18) 2. When running it smells like sulfur & fuel (10/16/18 & 10/17/18). 3. Also, smelled fuel inside the car 4. Headache and nauseated due to fuel smell in the cabin 5. Took to dealer ship (10/18/18), they said that there is no problem with the car. Ok to drive 6. On the way home from dealership, engine light came on and engine stalled. Did not have power. 7. Stopped the car, waited for 10 minutes, restarted the car, engine light went way. 8. Car stalled few times after that while driving 9. I did not have this problem until oil change at Honda dealership on 10/13/18 10. Checked the oil level. Oil level was much higher than recommended. Smelled fuel in the oil. Dealer's response (10/19/18) 1. Dealer talked to Honda they are aware of the problem fuel getting into oil and coming up with a fix mid-November. This problem will not affect the engine or catalytic converter. 2. They did not find any code in the computer 3. Engine stalls when there is too much oil resulting from fuel getting into oil 4. Did not give oil sample as requested 5 changed the oil and updated the software Honda customer service response: filed a complaint. They are aware of the problem and working on a fix. As per Honda, it will not affect long term life of engine, transmission or catalytic converter.
Tl the contact owns a 2018 Honda Cr-v. While driving 25 mph, the engine stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated and flashed. The contact was able to restart the engine and regain normal function. The vehicle was taken to helena Honda (3377 us highway 12, east helena, montana 59601, (877) 962-2573). The dealer inspected the engine area for rodents that may have been caught in the engine compartment, causing the engine to stall. The dealer was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. The dealer advised the contact to bring the vehicle back if the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 5,980.
When the vehicle is in motion at low speeds on inclined roads the engine is in a state where it is stalling over and over again. I have to accelerate harder to prevent the engine from completely stalling out. This is also followed by a smell of gas in the passenger compartment of the car.
Fuel is making it's way into the oil system. Everytime I check the oil I can clearly smell gasoline on the dipstick. I know that Honda has recalled 350,000 crvs in china for the same issue with the same 1. 5 turbo engines however, when I tell the dealership or Honda representatives about it they act as if it is an isolated incident. This will eventually cause premature wear on the engine and potentially become a safety concern if the engine were to stall at high speeds.
On March 1st 2018 the engine stalled twice *(with engine light coming on) in a heavily congested part of our city. . Strong smell of fuel inside and outside the passenger cabin. Was driving to visit friends for lunch on opposite end (south) where I work. The first stall occurred on a service road leading to restaurant. The 2nd stall occurred driving back from restaurant to work. .
Engine stalled multiple times in last one year when accelerating from yeld/stop. It happed twice while yielding and merging onto highways; we were lucky there were no vehicles on highway during merging, otherwise situation would have the worst . Also all warning lights on the dash board flashes with failure warnings. At that point engine almost stalled running only at speed of 10 m/h atleast which helped me to pull off the highway. I switched off and on, engine came live, but all the warning lights were still there. Warnings on the dashboard were cleared only next day after whole night idle. I took the vehicle to Honda dealer, explained the problem and also provided them the video that my friend sitting in the passenger seat recorded while incident happened. Dealership tried to pull the error code, but none were found. Dealer asked me to keep the vehicle with dealership as they need to reproduce the issue. Fortunately they reproduced the exact same issue, and found the engine cylinder misfires in 1 and 4. They intimated Honda engineering for assistance, and Honda assisted them to recalibrate the system without finding the root cause. Dealership recalibrated and directed by Honda and told me that if the issue happens again that will be fixed under warranty. All these transcripts were recorded in service history of my vehicle. The same issue appeared yesterday again. When I researched about the issue on internet, most of them complained about the enginle oil and gas mixup. I checked my oil level with oil check stick provided by Honda, and oil levels are way above than max mark and oil smells like gasoline; and more over the oil look very thin almost like water thickness.
The contact owns a 1998 Honda Cr-v. While driving various speeds, the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle was moved to the shoulder of the road and restarted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 185,000.

Engine stalls occasionally during the period of first ten minutes after it is turned on.
On a number occasions, I made a sudden sharp turn, & the engine stalled for a few seconds, this loss of power nearly caused me to either get hit in the rear, or being struck by an on coming vehicle. Dealers said they've heard this complaint a number of times, but thet don't have a solution as Honda has not put out a service bulletin. These crv's seem to have this and vibration problems, but either Honda denies it, or has no solution. A car stalling when making a turn is dangerous.
Tl-the contact owns a 1999 Honda crv. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph , the vehicle engine stalled. The vehicle was able to restart. The oil lamp and check engine warning indicator illuminated. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacture was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000. Jw.

Engine stalls while driving time to time. It lasts a few minutes. The problem was reported to a dealer after purchasing the car (new). Honda dealers cannot find the cause of the problem. Recently I found a youtube video that shows that it is a common problem in Honda and that the cause is a faulty ignition key part. If it is true, then Honda must recall it to fix the problem. It must be investigated since many Honda cars are reported for the same problem, but Honda seems not to know what the cause of the problem is.

The 2015 crv ex vibrates at idle so badly that it feels as if the engine is going to stall. It also vibrates while driving but not all the time. This started as soon as I purchased the crv. When I brought it back to the dealer in November 2014, with only 200 miles on it, I was told Honda was aware of the issue and was working on a fix for it. It has been 10 months with multiple visits to the dealer and still no fix. I have been told recently at the dealer that Honda was most likely not going to correct this issue because of the cost. It continues to be a distraction while driving and at idle and I hope Honda will do the right thing and fix this issue. To me this is a major issue that needs correction now. Also, I have had a noise from under the crv driving over dips or bumps in the road at low speeds, most noticeable below 30 mph. Brought it to the dealer who has since replaced to rear struts 2 times already and still the noise is still there. I will continue to bring it back to them until this is addressed. This has been my worst experience with a new car since I first purchased my first car some 30 years ago.
We bought this car in March, 2013. Now in 2014, we noticed the ac wasnt working we attempted to recharge it with freon, but I was told the compressor needed to be replaced. The compressor was replace, the condenser, lines, ex valve, even a sensor. Pretty much all the ac system has been replace. Now we have noticed that once the compressor is on. It causes the engine to stall while driving or making turns. It feels as if the compressor will cause the engine to turn off. As if not bad enough once the car is on park with ac on the compressor will shut-off and the ac will start blowing a humid-smelly air. Once it does this, the compressor's emergency valve will open and flush some freon. It is a very serious safety hazard. I dont feel safe driving the car with my family in it. Specially now that I've read about all the other recalls and complains. Doing my research now (which is too late), I found that Honda was sued due to this issue. Ac compressor malfuntion is to be found in 02-04 Honda crvs. Our crv has been back at the mechanic 3 times the last month, and yet the issue cant be resolve. The mechanic says it has to do with the way the system was design. Alternator and compressor share the same band. I'm afraid and concerned that at somepoint both things will give-out while driving.

Engine or transmittion begines to stall in the morning when driving at 50 mph or higher on highway. It does not happen in the afteroon. I tried to warm up the vehicle for 5 mins before driving, but the simpton remains the same. The software upgrade was done by dealers a couple of times, but the problem continues.
My car engine stalled mostly in ther morning at 50 mph or above. It lasts about a few minutes, and disappears. It happens in the afternoon again. It seems that egine speed and transmission are mismatched. I reported this several times after I purchsed it; dealers updated softwares under factory warantees. The problem has not been fixed. My car has now about 32,000 milies. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the recent recall on engine oil ring problem.
While driving on the freeway, the vehicle suddenly lost power as if the ignition had been turned off. Lights were on, radio was on but engine stalled and steering was locked. The vehicle decreased in speed from roughly 65mph to 45mph at which point I attempted to restart the engine by turning the key. The vehicle restarted immediately and I was immediately to accelerate to the original speed.

My vehicle stalls out, has rough idle, and misfires. It first started to happen only when the engine was cold. Once it warmed up it was fine. It progressively got worse. Dealer advised me to get a complete tune-up and said it would fix the problem. Unfortunately, this was only a temporary fix. It started again when the engine was cold and then at all times. The dealer seemed to be perplexed by the whole thing and advised me again to do a tune-up. Once again, problem was fixed for awhile. This last time it went downhill quickly. When engine was cold and then stalling and dying at anytime no matter what the conditions were. The mil light came on everytime I had this problem. Honda now tells me I have low compression in cylinder #3 and my car misfires. They advised me to have the head sent to their machine shop to inspect it. Nothing was done to correct the failure as of yet. I have found many other complaints. Honda corp. Knows about the head problem. My own research found valves need to be adjusted/inspected regularly because they have a tendency to tighten which leads and/or results in the valve receding into the cylinder/burnt valve. I am very upset due to the fact that Honda has known about this and they have never told me anything about the valves. The dealer still never disclosed this known problem while having me paying over $1000. 00 just to start on the repair. In the car manual it states you only need to inspect the valves every 105,000 miles or if you hear a noise. There was absolutely no noise from my valves. They should be checked more like every 25,000-30,000 miles. This is a huge safety issue to have your car die or stall. I asked Honda about the valve. Now the same people seem to know a lot. At this moment, american Honda corp. Is offering me a goodwill warranty repair of 25% to repair it, but the case is not settled. I have been lied to, deceived, ripped off, and most of all my safety was put into danger willingly.

While making a left turn the engine stalled. I lost all power to the vehicle. Was able to coast to side and restart car. Took to dealer and they advised they are aware of this problem happening to others and have no fix at this time. Honda looking into it if this occurred on the expressway I could have been killed. Dealer response is not acceptable vehicle unsafe to drive. Dt.
The engine stalled and would not move. Cause was unknown. Dealer had been contacted. Mr. Techinicians from japan were sent to inspect the vehicle. Manufacturer also extended 5 year warranty on engine.
Engine stalls while driving, hard to restart.
