1 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

We are the only owner of the van bought brand new from a Honda dealer. At approximately 145k miles the engine light came on. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion who diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The local dealers wanted a small fortune to repair it, more than the car was worth it. I learned that it is a typical problem with those Honda Odysseys. The car has been repaired though.

2 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that there was a random failure that progressed concerning the power steering. The vehicle shook excessively each time the failure occurred. The vehicle performed extensive diagnostic testing, but was unable to provide a specific remedy to prevent the failure. In addition, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion who diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided no specific recommended repair solution to the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 126,607.

3 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2014

Our 2005 Honda Odyssey had a transmission failure on the way out of town from georgia to florida over the 4th of July weekend. On Wednesday we just had an O2 sensor and recall work (master cylinder & one other issue) completed at a Honda dealer in georgia. I then took it down the street to get two new tires put on the vehicle at a tire service center. They checked the vehicle out for travel, gave us the green light and bam! by 6pm the following day the transmission solenoids were both reported failed: p0746 pressure control solenoid "a" performance/stuck off p0777 pressure control solenoid "b" stuck on p0741 torque converter clutch circuit performance/stuck off we hobbled into panama city, where I booked a car rental from the airport. The dealer immediately assessed the issues as a transmission failure. We have returned to atlanta on a 14 day car rental scrambling to find a new car. The quote for replacing the transmission is $3k. This is prohibitive on a 2005. Honda corporation refused a goodwill assistance request. Case number available upon request. At that point I will has spent $3. 2k on the car, $400 in car rentals (in georgia while service was being performed, and florida to get home). My guess is if I don't fix the transmission there will be no trade-in value for the vehicle. It's got bumper, interior and fender damage, so there isn't much hope even if I do go forward with the replacement. Also, the alpharetta service center said the transmission fluid looked fine, and Honda in pc said it was burnt. There explanation was a part failure in the transmissions burned the fluid. It would have been nice to have an early warning of a catastrophic failure before a 330 mile road trip.

4 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2014

On grade or when accelerating slowly between 25-30 mph the vehicle shakes violently. This seams to be a common issue, and still no recalls have been made. Many say it is caused by a faulty torque converter on models from 05-08.

5 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

When the car is about 45-50 mph the engine shutters. It feels like I'm driving over railroad tracks. The car also shutters when the eco light comes on. I've been told that the torque converter is failing and that it is a known failure in this model and year. Honda needs to do a recall on this because this is a defective transmission.

6 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2011

2005 Honda Odyssey, transmission failure at 111,930 miles. The transmissions shops said the torque converters are bad and fail regularly in the Honda vans.

7 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2011

First owners ot 2005 Odyssey, van has 65k and all service records, dealer tells us we need newtorque converter and 2 new engine mounts. Absolutely shocked by this since previous Honda crx lasted over 180k with no major repairs. . . Contacted Honda USA for financial assistance. . .

8 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2010

The car shutters around 40 - 50 mph as well as on inclines. I'm amazed at how many complaints there are about this and how common the defect is that the two places I called after being told by the Honda dealer that I needed a $2200 torque converter put in knew immediately what I was talking about. The 05 Odyssey's are notorious for this problem. I'm surprised that Honda has let this go without a recall.

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2010

My 2005 Honda Odyssey shudders at speeds between 30 and 45. I was told I need to replace my torque converter. Through various research, I have begun to see that this is a common problem - there was a safety bulletin (09-053) published for the 07 and 08 model.

10 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2010

I have 2005 Honda Odyssey. It has transmission problem, whenever it shift gear at low speed around 40 mph, it has judder problem. It have been told by the Honda dealership that it will need software updates, so they did that. It does not work though, it is just getting worst. This is a safety issue, I have seen a lot of people having the same transmission problem. The Honda dealership suggest changing the torque converter/replace the whole transmission. That will be very costly. I am hoping you can investigate this failure and stop the foreseeable accidents. This is a defect in Honda's transmission design, not because of wear and tear. The problem started at around 95k miles and the dealership always suggests different solutions that leads to no fix. The problem gets worst and not they suggest replacing torque converter.

11 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2010

We purchased our 2005 Honda Odyssey on June 16th, 2010. During the test drive as well as for a week or so after purchasing the vehicle, no problems were noticed. However about 2 weeks after purchasing the vehicle, we started to notice the vehicle would shudder around 40-45 miles an hour, usually on an incline. We took this vehicle on a long trip and the shuddering started to get worse. On July 19, 2010, we took the vehicle in for service. On Wednesday, July 21st, the dealership called to inform me that they had installed a software upgrade for this problem, but it didn't fix it. Their recommendation was either a torque converter or a new transmission. The tech who worked on my car said they could just replace the torque converter and would probably not have any more problems; however, Honda's recommendation was to replace the transmission. They were waiting on the extended warranty CO. To call and see if this was covered. Luckily, on Thursday, July 22nd, the warranty CO. Sent someone out to decide if they would cover it. The warranty CO. Decided to replace the entire transmission of my month old car to the tune of $3700. On Friday, July 23rd, I finally got my vehicle back. However, unfortunately, it is returning to the dealership due to the fact that it veers to the right.

12 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2010

2005 Honda Odyssey touring van this problem started a while ago when the van gets to a steady speed of aprox 40 usually at a slight incline the car starts to jitter or feel like going over railroad tracks. Now it is happening at other speeds. I was told it was a cracked block months ago and had it replaced. This did not fix the problem. Now being told torque converter will fix the problem @$1900. Called Honda USA they said the will not consider reviewing my claim because of my mileage is now 100,000. Others on web are having similar problems. . My best guess is that we have been having this problem for 15-20,000 miles.

13 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2010

Original owner of 2005 Honda Odyssey van. Around 60,000 miles and while still under the Honda care warranty, the car began to shudder at 20-40 mph speeds when shifting gears. Similar to the multiple complaints about torque converter and transmissions. This is scary and I know not what could happen when transmission decides to let go completely. Local Honda dealer checked the vehicle two times before the warranty ran out (July of 2010) and "couldn't duplicate the problem when they drove it. " absent a recall by Honda to correct this deficiency, the reported problems will continue to grow until someone gets hurt. I feel they should recall the vehicle and fix the transmission when it was reported to them multiple times while still under warranty.

14 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2010

2005 Honda Odyssey has defective transmissions which Honda needs to replace before someone is killed. The automatic transmission jerks the vehicle forward at speeds of 20-45 mph. This is dangerous as you could be driving slowly at 15-20mph in school zone and the transmission judders and jerks the vehicle forward. Honda is making customers spend $'s to perform transmission fluid flushes, have dealership do software updates and change torque converters. None of these will work. Please investigate before valuable lives are lost like with the Toyota incident. Honda does not want to issue a formal transmission recall because it would cost them hundreds of millions to replace transmissions. The us government has a duty to investigate this problem thoroughly before someone gets hurt.

15 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2009

Between 35-40 miles per hour transmission is slipping. Van is 4. 5 years old with 53,000 miles. Dealer says torque converter needs to be replaced at an out of pocket expense of $3400. This is on a 2005 Honda Odyssey ex-l with navigation.

16 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2009

When the car reaches a speed of 30-40 miles an hour the eco gear kicks in causing the car to vibrate and shake under the car in the transmission area. I have been told by the dealer that it was motor mounts, torque converter, wheel alignment, etc. I have found a class action suit that was filed in California. I want to be add to that lawsuit if possible.

17 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

At around 85,000 miles our 2005 Odyssey started exhibiting a transmission shudder in the 30-40 mph range. I talked with the dealer about it, and they mentioned it would require the torque converter being replaced. However, they offered a much cheaper possible fix to the problem of replacing all the transmission fluid (cost about $200). That seems to have temporarily fixed the problem. I had the flush done again after 15,000 miles. Hopefully, this will be the only fix needed.

18 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that when he attempted to accelerate to speeds of 20 to 40 mph, the vehicle would shutter. While driving at higher speeds, the shuttering would stop. The dealer stated that the torque converter and rear engine mounts needed to be replaced. The manufacturer would not offer any assistance since the factory warranty was not valid. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000 and the current mileage was 91,000.

19 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. When driving between speeds 25 mph to 45 mph the vehicle shudders as if it will stall . The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the torque converter was replaced. Several months after the repair the failure resurfaced. The technician at the dealer has not been able to duplicate the failure. The failure mileage was 68,000.

20 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that when accelerating between 25 to 30 mph, the transmission began to vibrate. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer since there was an existing warranty but the failure could not be duplicated. The failure became progressively worse. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The manufacturer agreed to pay fifty percent of the repair costs since the warranty was no longer valid. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. The current mileage was approximately 77,000.

21 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2008

I purchased my vehicle new and vigilantly maintain it. With fewer than 43,000 miles, the automatic transmission fails to properly "lockup" at 45 mph on level grade when warm. The dealers scan tool indicated absence of any detected abnormality, but their test drive confirmed the symptom--pulsing power to the drive wheels. They told me the torque converter is failing which they don't replace nor repair so they said it needs a new transmission. They said it was ok to drive. They never acknowledged a history of transmission problems nor any related service campaigns or technical service bulletins. I am, like I said, vigilant about service, so I will take care of this before it becomes an issue, but others may be at risk if the transmission fails rapidly due to improper design.

22 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2008

Have had a few problems since purchased van new. First problem around "08 is a vibrating-shuddering felt in steering wheel. At about 35- 45 mph and just before the "econo" would kick in, I would feel the vibrating start. If I increase my speed quickly and get on up to about 50mph, it would stop. Thought it needed a tune-up. . Did that-still vibrated. Thought it was transmission-had it flushed-still vibrated. It wasn't a constant problem back in "08, but irritating. Now in 2013 it is many times a day and shudders very badly. Took it to Honda dealer today about the escalated vibrations. Test drove it and said vibrations were from torque converter and needed to replace transmission. Also needed timing belt replaced. I did'nt expect to hear transmission-expected to hear rear motor mount(600. 00) needed replacing. I specifically took my van in to check the motor mount. When he said torque converter/transmission I asked him what the motor mounts looked like. He said the tech did'nt mention that. No one likes to hear they are about to inccur some expensive repairs, but I did'nt expect to hear transmission replacement at 170,000 miles. The fellow at the dealership stated that"heck, that is really good for the 2005 Odyssey". Our Nissan truck had over 300,000 miles and our Dodge duelly has over 200,000 miles neither with transmission issues. So, this issue still remains unrepaired-waiting on estimate from dealership. Yikes! the passenger sliding door has not operated correctly for 3-4 years now. It does'nt close all the way. If you open the sliding door, when you close it itwill beep like its not closed. You have to get out and manually slam it shut. They said it may be the motor. . . Too much to fix it. . So we just don't use it. Recently while pulling into parking spaces,I hear a whinning sound and steering is more difficult.
