I was driving 70mph on an interstate. The battery light came on. There was no immediate change in vehicle performance and there were no odors present so I continued driving for several minutes towards the next exit. About . 5mi away from the exit, the abs, fcw, ldw, and brake lights came on, the air conditioner and console turned off, and the automatic transmission disengaged. This prevented the vehicle from being able to accelerate. The entire vehicle essentially lost power. The local dealer diagnosed the issue as an oil leak in the spool valve that then destroyed the alternator and fried the battery. The manufacturer (Honda) recenty issued TSB 20-023 detailing the problem and repair procedure, but it was limited to the source of the leak, not any of the other components that were damaged. My understanding of the incident leads me to believe a fire could have broken out due to the location of the leak onto the other engine components.
As coning from the store one afternoon June 20 2020 smoke stared to came out from the engine compartment later ones open hood fire stared to come from alternator quick when to get water and dump rigth at it this was the first time very concern because childrens where at van at that moment which is a big concern after replace alternator totally burn we replace now in 11/27/20 it happen again.

Car engine shut off while in motion on local street. A bad/defective front spool valve leaked oil on the alternator and the alternator went bad right way. Which cause engine to shutdown while car is in motion. Try to start the car, it won't start, neither electrical power. Its very dangerous situation, likely wasnt driving on the highway. Dealer maintenance shop advisor told me that alot Honda Odyssey have spool valve leaked out to cause the alternator goes bad & shut down the car.

Factory alternator over heated and was smoking.
I have spent over $4000 in repair costs and my car just shut down completely and will not start. I have had to have my car towed three times once to Honda dealership and twice to a repair shop. All this msoney spent and car still doesn't work right, now it just stopped working completely. All lights on dashboard start flickering then car starts stopping itself while all lights go crazy. Car starts stalling itself while I'm driving making it extremly unpridictable and unsafe. Car has gotten so hot that it melted a new battery that needed to be replaced along with alternator. Still after all this still not working right all the electricals go crazy brakes, locks and everything else now car has completely stopped. Yet no one can find out what's wrong. It has happened on road and on highway very unpridictable. Curtis Honda in milford had my car for 4 days couldn't find anything yet it stalled and stopped on me only a day after picking it up from milford dealership. They could not find or would not find why. All lights go crazy and stop shut off my vehichle. After all this vehicle started I drove it around town all of a sudden all lights started going crazy and started stopping on it's own until it completly died.

Location, staten island, NY. Date, 10/29/2017. Time, about 9:45pm. Drove over a few puddles in pouring rain and a hilly road. Suddenly, the check charge system light came on and complete loss of power steering. A minute later, it was restored. It happened again about a minute later. Then it was back to normal. Was able to drive safely home. Extremely hazardous if the loss of alternator power can immediately cause lost of steering.
The contact owns a 2000 Honda Odyssey. While driving 60 mph, the brake, abs, maintenance, check engine, and battery warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle stalled and the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle experienced a severe oil leak, slipping transmission, and alternator failure. The contact was informed by an independent mechanic that the oil failure caused the drive belts to slip, which caused a failure in the alternator recharging the battery as intended. The contact stated that the battery needed to be replaced due to the oil leak. The contact attempted to contact (stockton Honda, 2002 e hammer ln, stockton, CA 95210, (844) 237-1845), but was unsuccessful. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 279,000.

When the fob is stored near the vehicle it creates a power drain on the battery. We were camping for the weekend and the fob was generally near the vehicle (in the camper). When we left the campground at the end of the weekend, the warning indicator said not to use any auxiliary power. I am not sure how the vehicle uses the battery vs the engine or alternator to power the interior outlets, usb charging ports, and other things like the dvd/res system, but the previous power outage in the vehicle has us on high alert and we feel it is relevant as it indicates a pattern of power failure and insufficient battery or power supply to the vehicle relative to the voltage it pulls with the "bells and whistles" on the car. The warning remained for the entire 3 hour drive home.

While driving to texas from st. Louis our van suddenly died on interstate 44. It happened at 1am. We called usaa for help. They got us to a repair shop. We learned the power steering fluid leaked causing the alternator to die. We had zero power on the interstate and my family of 5 was in danger. We learned at the shop the power steering was under extended warranty instead of recall. This caused our van to die on the interstate and put my family in immediate risk of death. We were not told of the extended warranty because Honda informed us they didn't have to. The repair shop in oklahoma city that fixed our alternator told us this should have been a recall and we were put at risk. Please review and make the call for a recall instead of an extended warranty. My children were crying and clearly shaken by the entire event. Had an 18 wheeler passed us at the time, they would not have seen us and surely would have killed us all.

My 2006 Honda Odyssey went up in flame, while I was driving the vehicle, on 10/11/14. Insurance had me tow it to the Honda dealer. After Honda having the car for 31 days the insurance paid the repairs & I paid my $500. 00 deductible. I'm ready to drive my Honda Odyssey away on 11/13/14, and I notice the van began to shake violently and the rpm's dropped to almost 0. No report was given to me about what was wrong with van & what future repairs had to be done. All I got was the present repairs due to the fire, even after we had asked them to do a full inspection of the vehicle. Prior to the fire the van never shook, it never had this problem before. While there, they performed the changing of the fuel pump which had been recalled by Honda, but now we can not be sure that it was done nor can we be sure that it didn't affect the cars status now. Honda still has the van in their lot & insurance adjuster went to see the car and now Honda is saying that the shaking of the car has nothing to do with the fire. According to Honda's final report the "probable" cause of fire was in the alternator area -sub-cord alternator to fuse box. Honda said the shake is caused by the rubber motor mounts. I tried to tell Honda they are rubber pieces and when rubber comes in contact with heat it melts. Honda will not fix without me paying out of pocket. If the problem really is the motor mounts, I have researched that many people are awaiting a recall from Honda on the motor mounts for the fact that theirs prematurely fails. Honda has us on a back and fourth. If they can't be sure what caused the fire and are disregarding the motor mounts going bad due to the fire or the fuel pump recall, then how can they be sure that none of the above is not causing the violent shake on the van.

As I was driving down the highway at around 70 mph with the cruise control on, when the battery dashboard indicator illuminated. Within 20 minutes the vehicle's electrical systems began to die. I was able to drive to an auto parts store and purchase a new battery. Replacing the battery did not eliminate the battery indicator and the vehicle died again on my way home again driving around 70 mph on the interstate. This time the vehicle was towed a service station where the battery and alternator were both tested and found to work properly. The vehicle was then towed to a local Honda dealership to try and identify the cause of the parasitic drain. It does not seem reasonable for a vehicle with a properly functioning alternator to lose all electrical power and die with in operation and indicates a defect in the electrical system.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle jerked abnormally as the instrument panel lights flashed randomly. The vehicle also stalled without warning. The contact then shifted into park and neutral but the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the battery and alternator was replaced but to no avail, the failure later recurred. The dealer advised the contact that the battery and alternator would need to be replaced a second time. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 111785.
While driving the vehicle normally, we noticed all of the dashboard "idiot lights" coming on intermittently when we would make a turn or decelerate. Finally they came on and stayed on and the air conditioning stopped working. We took the van to our trusted mechanic and he found a broken alternator bracket. He welded it and sent us on our way. Two weeks later, the same problem happened. He then installed a new alternator bracket. About 10 days later, the same problem occurred and he found the new bracket had also broken. He thought that perhaps the alternator was "dragging" on the belt and causing strain on the bracket, so he replaced the bracket and alternator. Car worked fine for another week and then the same problem occurred. He researched the issue and found that this is a design problem with Honda Odysseys, but that Honda is not fixing the problem. Also, because my van is a 2002, he said that Honda would not likely help me in any way. I called Honda and that was indeed the case. I am having a fourth bracket installed and we'll see how long this one lasts.
The top bracket holding the alternator to the engine block failed again for the third time while my wife was driving the van. As a result of the failure of the top bracket, the stress on the main serpentine belt caused the bolt holding the alternator in place to snap off at the engine block. This caused the alternator to become loose and caused a burning smell to come into the cabin of the vehicle. The alternator loose and un-attached poses a potential catastrophic failure with the pully system and the power steering which may cause an accident. I reported the previous incident of the same problem on October 25th, 2010. My concern is that this is a recurring problem that Honda is aware of and not correcting with a recall and addition of a re engineered and strengthened top alternator bracket. I am also very concerned that failure of this part/system while my wife and children are driving the van will cause an accident and injury or death to my family. I have called Honda and their solution or recommendation is to replace the part and use proper torque specifications. This has not worked 2 times so far and my mechanic tried to weld and additional piece of metal to the oem bracket to make the bracket stronger, and this did not work.

The alternator froze up causing the belt to slip and generate heat. A burning smell was the first detection of a problem. The alternator light came on in the dash. As a precaution, the car was returned home. The plastic casing on the alternator caught fire. The fire was extinguished with water immediately. The fire department was called and responded to confirm the fire was extinguished. The part was replaced.
Top alternator mounting bracket failed for the second time in one month. On first failure at night, headlights became very dim while vehicle was operating causing danger to occupants and other motorists. On second failure vehicle was close to home and no immediate hazard to driver or other motorists. Research shows this is a known component failure to Honda and nhtsb.
The 50,000 miles Honda Odyssey alternator creates smokes and sparks. The car schedule maintained at dealership and also no after market product installed in the car.
I have 2007 Odyssey ex-l with dvd. The light in car like head and tail light, room light etc is blinking all the time even I drive my car. I already went to dealer ship two times, they just take a look at the battery during the day time and said everything looks fine. At night, my boy can't read a book in the car because of blinking. It looks the generator has problem.
My Honda Odyssey was purchased on Apr. 1999. On 5/7/2004, I had to replace the alternator at nardy Honda as the vehicle won't charge. On 8/2/04, the car broke down and later found out the alternator bracket broke (sheared in half). Honda customer service later paid for the replacement of the bracket. On 8/27/05, the bracket broke again in high way. Honda again paid for the repair at another dealership (lundgren in MA since we were traveling outside NY). I complained both time and this time questioned if the design or part is at fault. Honda told me there is a service bulletin about the torque of the screws for this bracket so I asked it to be double checked. The car was then checked at nardy Honda in oct. 05 (paid for by Honda customer service again). On 2/4/06, the car broke down again and this time it is the bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket. I have the broken bolt and bracket from the 2nd time. I have called Honda service again and questioned the design, part, and or service procedure to be at fault since I believe the assembly seems to fail instantly under high stresses caused by either the tension of the belt engagement or constant tension. The bolt was sheared off as well. Both failures indicate high stresses. Honda customer service told me there is nothing they can or will do for me this time. Now, I am really worried that the car can break down any time and can cause serious accidents if the driver other than me (my wife or my son) does not know how to handle the sudden break down. I also now question if the initial repair was not caused by bad alternator but was the fact that the bracket was also broken so the alternator won't charge as the belt was stuck.

About 20+ times, while driving and then applying the brakes at low speed, all of the dashboard/instruments panel lights flashes on briefly, then turns off. The Honda dealer could not fix this problem because they could not reproduce this intermittent problem. Then on 10/14/2011, the same thing occurred again but in addition to all of the dashboard/instruments panel lights flashing, the steering wheel locked up where it could not be turned and almost caused an accident (almost ran over a pedestrian). Luckily the brakes still worked. After turning off the engine, pulling out the key, and then restarting it, the problem went away. . Read more...
2003 Honda Odyssey. The consumer stated that the horn did not blow and the srs light was on. The consumer had an appointment on Thursday to have the vehicle looked at. The srs light came on September 30, 2005, and the horn quit working on September 19, 2005. The consumer stated that the vehicle had the cruise control switch replaced. This did not help the problem. The alternator was replaced, since the consumer purchased the vehicle a metal on metal sound had been present, the keyless entry has never performed properly, the cruise control was inoperative, the srs light stayed on, the horn had gone out, the windshield wiper was inoperative, the alarm had gone off for no reason, there was a wind noise coming from the driver window, the remote was intermittent, the dash lights would illumnate while the vehicle was in motion, and the alternator bracket had broken.
Alternator died in my 2001 Honda Odyssey with only 26,601 miles. Alternator has to be replaced. I could have been left stranded.

While driving, all the warning lights illuminated on the dashboard. The dealership replaced the alternator on November 2002 then the consumer received a NHTSA recall letter on the alternator. The dealership replaced the alternator. One month later, while driving the problem recurred. The dealer replaced the component on April 29, 2003.
Consumer states while driving, sometimes all the indicator dash lights came on. The consumer was told by the mechanic, since they were unable to duplicate the problem, they could not repair the vehicle. Then she states the same thing happened again and she took the vehicle to the dealer, this time she states they told her that the problem was her alternator, which they replaced. Then she states on 4/16/04, while she was driving all the indicator lights came on again, but this time she heard a funny noise. She states that her spouse, then got out of the vehicle and lifted the hood. There he found that the serpertine belt had come completely off.
When driving my Odyssey, normally in the 30-50 mph range, all or most of the dashboard indicator and warning lights will flash intermittently for a brief second or two. The numerous (25 + ) times this has happened is frightening because one thinks the van has stalled. There seems to be no pattern or connection such as playing/not playing radio, a/c, amount of gas, etc. . . I will say 75-85% of the occurences happen on the road leading to our subdivision (usually 30-50 mph driving). Also, I'm sure there have been instances I have missed it because it can happen so quickly; one actually has to be looking at the panel. Honda says to drive the van since it is not stalling and there appears to be no inherent danger. Honda's policy is they cannot do anything until they replicate the problem. Interesting! what are they going to do when it happens --- there's no time to take a picture. I've considered running a video camera, but it's so unpredictable when it will happen. There seems to be about a dozen different instances of this happening (according to Honda), but they cannot replicate the problem. Guess what? the replication is not likely going to happen unless a service manager or technician takes temporary ownership of one of these vehicles for a month or two. Sometimes the flashing occurs once every month or two, maybe several times in one day or a week. Just because the service technicians cannot duplicate the problem, does that mean some of us are hallucinating? is anything being done or explored based on the information given. Honda, imagine this: if you actually replicated the problem and saw all the dashboard panel warning and service lights flash, what would that mean to you and what would you do? this is not imaginary! I am keeping written documentation of each time this issue is checked and reported, mainly for post-warranty issues.
Automatic sliding doors apply dangerous pressure to people before retracting. I have been hurt twice by being crushed and bruised by doors closing on my body when door was accidently activated while loading children and passengers. The sensor to retract does not operate as indicated by manufacturer. This defect poses serious danger to children. Also, both sliding doors have been malfunctioning since oct 2002. Will almost close, then retract with nothing obstructing them. Dealer has attempted to repair this malfunction four times in the last year starting at 25,000 miles with no success. Faulty junction switches have been replaced and doors rehoned but malfunctions continue to happen approx every couple months and mileage is now at 38,000. Driver side window is very slow to raise. Faulty regulator was replaced oct, 2002. Almost a year later, the problem continues to occur with dealer saying it just needs cleaning. Car has been serviced three times in the last year for this problem.
Srs warning light remains illuminated on dash board. The dash lights illuminated and the steering wheel audio controls went haywire. When the consumer pushed the up button on the radio, it changed the track number. When the consumer pushed the down button, it turnred the volume up. One dealer replaced the steering column and fixed the audio problem. This didn't work. Another dealer replaced the alternator, which seemed to have worked.
