3 Wiring problem of the 2018 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/19/2018

I was out of state on vacation. While driving my car in the city, a 2018 Honda Odyssey exl purchased oct. 2017 with only 6000 miles, the engine light came on and I got an emissions warning notice that I needed to get the emissions system checked. I called a local Honda dealer and he told me to drive it around for a week and see what happened; if the message went away or something happened to the car. After a week I called the dealer again and he told me to bring the car in to be checked. They gave me a loaner car to use. After approximately 3-4 days he called and said there was evidence of rodent chewing on the coating of the wires. He said the cause was wire harness chewed causing short in shielded wire. He said he needed to keep the car another couple of days to check all the wires. He called me back a couple days later and said that the whole system was affected and needed to get a new harness. Apparently the coating on the wires was soy based. I did some checking and there were several law suits against several auto manufacturers in 2014 and 2015 about this problem of rodents eating the coatings on the wires. I had to wait 2 months before getting my car back as the harness was on back order. The total cost of this was $2619. I had to pay out of pocket $500 and my insurance company paid the rest. I feel that this should have been covered by Honda as they have known that this was a problem for several years and yet they still were putting in wiring coated with soy based product.

4 Wiring problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/01/2018

Corrosion within the fuel pump wiring connector and the fuel pump retaining nut was cracked / broken. Customer complaint was stalling while driving, no start condition. Troubleshooting procedure indicated the fuel pump wiring connector was faulty the inspection revealed that the connector was corroded apparently from moisture. This issue is certainly a safety concern considering the faulty connection can cause loss of engine power -> loss of power steering, and the faulty fuel pump nut can cause gasoline fumes to escape containment which may lead to an explosion / fire. If the connector was jiggled the fuel pump would intermittently operate and or fail. The local Honda dealer refused to recognize the safety recall campaign # 04v42000 or the Honda service bulletin #04-049, and refused to mitigate the problem without offering the option to repair the issue outside of the recall which would cost the customer $454. 32 for the fuel pump repair kit in addition to service fees of at least $374. 00. The vehicle was initially towed-in and presented for service on June of 2018. The Honda dealer is providing wiring harness, retaining nut and gasket at a cost to the customer.

5 Wiring problem of the 2011 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/29/2018

Rodents chew through my Honda Odyssey 2011 electrical wiring. Looks like wire coating is soy based (based on what I am reading on forums) which attracts rodents. So rodents chewed electrical wiring which caused issues with signals going to transmission and we faced issues with driving car. Car started jumping while putting in reverse and forward gears and we immediately had to take it to dealership. This was safety hazard and we were lucky to not face accident. Looks like Honda is aware of this problem and they even have developed shrink wrap tape (Honda 4019-2317 rodent tape). Not sure why they are not installing it at the start.

6 Wiring problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

We have owned out dark blue 2005 Honda Odyssey for approximately 5 years. Recently, I am finding that the paint along the roof and side/front trim panels is chipping away. I have attempted to sand some of the bed spots and paint /protect again, but it is no use. The problem seems to be with the base layer below the blue paint. I have seen where this was identified, but I do not know where to go for more information on this defect the second area of concern is in the wiring for the radio and temperature control. There seems to be a loose wire or connection behind the panels. The back-lights for the radio and temperature control will turn on or off with no warning or indication as to why. The systems themselves work fine, it's only the visible lights that flicker, or turn off and on with no pattern. My fear is that it is an electrical problem that may cause a fire if the crossing of wires or shorting continues. This will happen when driving, sitting still, car off (power on), there is no common flag or trigger that would point to a problem. And all functions work (even when lights are off). Also, the car just started to vibrate when acceleration between 55-65. My mechanic stated that this may be due to faulty axles or possibly the transmission, both of which have open issues with Honda and to check with you first.

7 Wiring problem of the 2009 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

Took the car to the Honda dealership for emissions check light. Diagnosed as "nox sensor wiring harness chewed by mouse" per Honda dealership. There is no evidence of rodent damage or presence elsewhere in the vehicle. The Honda dealership did not provide me the pictures or the damaged part saying that it was thrown in the trash. The wiring was apparently covered by Honda rodent deterrent tape. I have contacted Acura/Honda dealerships, their extended warranty customer service and also the respective Acura/Honda manufacturer customer service. The same thing happened to my other car (Acura mdx 2009) within a span of one week with exactly similar presentation. When I requested information from the above sources, I was told that this was confidential information and is not available for customers and that is it is a rare event and not related to manufacturing defects and also there was no definitive trend in Acura/Honda(same company) nox sensor wiring harness being chewed by rodents and have refused to cover it under extended warranty program to which I have subscribed/purchased. I have another entry regarding the other vehicle at the NHTSA. Gov website.

The air bag warning lights and all of the warning lights on the instrument panel illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the mechanic diagnosed that the electrical wiring harness throughout the interior of the vehicle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 123,000. . . . Updated 08-26-14-.

10 Wiring problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

My vehicle was parked and unoccupied for over 8 hours from its last drive time. No key was in the ignition and no equipment or accessories were operating. The wiring under the driver seat ignited and the resulting fire consumed the cabin totaling the vehicle.

11 Wiring problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

12 Wiring problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/15/2007

I have had problems over and over with the sliding power doors on my 99 Honda Odyssey. This is a hazard. There are times I cannot shut the door and have to continue driving with the door ajar, and I have children in the back. There are times when the door won't open, if there was a fire or accident we would be stuck inside the vehicle until we could climb out somehow. This is ridiculous, I know many people who have the same issue and Honda does nothing.

13 Wiring problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

Honda case number : n012006-12-2800187 I have 2006 Honda Odyssey minivan with 7000 miles on it. The van didn't start and even I couldn't pull my key out from the ignition. I had to tow the local Honda dealer on 12/22/06. After 6 days of investigation, the dealer reported to me that they found the cable was eaten by rodents. The repair cost will be $1300 since the warranty doesn't cover the cable damaged by the rodents. I am living in this house for 6 years, and I never had this kind of problem with other vehicles so far. I think this is the Honda vehicles defect. They need to place the recall for this issue. Even if I repair the vehicles, I am worried to paying another $1300 if the rodent or other animal decide to come back again. Could you investigate this issue to avoid second victims? my house is not surrounded by woods or anything.

14 Wiring problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/08/2006

Apparently the "master" control switch in the driver's door experienced a loose connection. This prevented the windows from operating, I exited the vehicle while it was running to use an atm machine, since the window would not operate and the doors locked, trapping my 2 year old inside.

15 Wiring problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/24/2005

My wife was driving our 1999 Honda Odyssey a couple weeks ago and the horn began to honk continuously. She immediately pulled over as the interior began to fill up with acrid, dark smoke rising from beneath the steering column by her legs. She was very concerned and quickly attempted to exit the van since the amount of smoke was burning her eyes. The door locks did not work. After struggling in panic, she was finally able to squeeze out the open window. Luckily my 3 young children were not in the vehicle. With engine still running and the key in hand, she called me at work. I had her call the fire department . When they arrived, they too were unable to stop the engine by cutting the battery wire and finally stopped the burning of the wires by pulling the master fuse. I contacted our Honda dealer and they referred me to Honda America. Honda America authorized our shop to do an initial tear down. At that time, they found a component in the steering column that shorted which caused the burning of the wires. The wires burned completely from the fuse board and into a wire harness bundle. No fuse was burned. I do not know yet how far the damage progressed or what other electrical components are fried by this running short. After a week of deliberation, Honda informed me this morning that it was a wear out of a part and of no further concern to them since the vehicle warranty expired. Being trapped in the vehicle with wires burning, the occupant experienced severe sickness a couple of days following the incident and her lungs hurt for a couple of weeks. The vehicle sits idle at the shop where we towed it. I don't want to authorize repair the vehicle until the NHTSA determines if an investigation is warranted to ensure the safety of the public. There are no after market additions. All major, maintenance events were performed by our local Honda dealer for as long as the vehicle has been in our possession.

16 Wiring problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/07/2004

Spouse was leaving house driving out the driveway when she stop the car due to smoke coming from center console. She turned the vehicle off and informed me of smoke and smell in vehicle. I got a fire extinguisher and ran to car. No visible fire present or smoke but just a burned electrical smell. Inspected wiring that was visible around center console and nothing discovered at that time. Vented car and restarted with no increase in burned smell or more smoke. Operationally checked vehicle and had no radio sound. No fuses blown in electrical system. Took car to dealer and was not able with any positive assurance after two hour of troubleshooting what the problem was. Wanted to start swapping parts to isolate failure. Thought the $1000 radio of the dvd entertainment system could be bad. Took car home and removed integrated radio and dismantled only to find a burned up power supply on one of the internal circuit boards. Sent radio out for repair for $200 instead of $1000 replacement cost. Poor troubleshooting by dealer could have led to future fire in electrical system.
