The idle stop system frequently fails to restart the car after shutting down the engine at a stop light. In some cases the car is difficult to restart using the starter button. In other instances the car restarts and then dangerously lurches forward.
We've been experiencing issues with the auto idle stop feature (the auto restart in particular). On multiple occasions, the vehicle will automatically turn off the engine while stopped in traffic, but will fail to start back up, requiring the driverto manually turn the vehicle off and back on via push button starter (sometimes multiple restarts is necessary to get it moving again). This seems very similar to the investigation referenced under - ea25004.
Auto start stop not working. This is happening quite a lot where there auto stop in activated and then the car wont start back. Resulting in the car having to be completely restarted.
Engine would not restart after the idle stop at a traffic light. I needed to put the car in park and turn the engine off and restart it. Shortly after this, at another traffic light, the idle stop caused a delayed restart of the engine and caused the vehicle to lurch forward suddenly. This has happened once before as well.
This is the second time that the tail lift gate electric module became defective because of water pentation from some roof water seal.

The vehicle's auto idle stop system shuts off the engine at stop lights and other low-speed stops and, on multiple occasions, fails to restart, and the ais disable button is sticking. We disable ais every single time we drive the vehicle, and on multiple occasions the button has re-engaged itself mid-drive, meaning the safety hazard cannot reliably be avoided even with the workaround Honda recommends.
Speakers, even if the audio is off, will produce a static sound, leading the center console to display a 'connection lost' message before going completely black. Screen will reconnect only when the vehicle has been restarted. Rear back up camera is affected by this as well by not working when the screen has lost network connection. Seems to be a fakra issue.
I have encountered several instances where the vehicle goes idle at a spot light as expected. However the vehicle fails to restart when letting off the brake. Instead, the vehicle shifts into park. Once the vehicle shifts into park, I am unable to shift into drive. I must restart the vehicle and try en shift into drive. This is extremely dangerous and has happened multiple times. This vehicle is one year old and has 9k miles.
The car intermittently struggles to restart or dies and will not restart after stopping at a stoplight or stop sign due to the auto stop start. Even when the engine restarts after a stop, of often sounds like it’s struggling. The car has been taken into the dealership multiple times and the battery has been replaced twice. Honda dealer claims there’s no known issue despite numerous complaints online and report of a federal investigation into this issue with many Honda Odysseys and specifically the 2025 model year.
I own a 2020 Honda Odyssey and I am currently having a safety issue with the power tailgate. Upon inspection by my Honda dealership, my vehicle requires a new power tailgate control unit and floor harness and my roof rail and clips need to be re-sealed and replaced. It was discovered that due to the break in seal the connectors corroded due to a water leak. In April of 2026 I received multiple warning messages on my dashboard. The first was power tailgate problem and the second was keyless remote problem. At first I noticed my car continuously beeping while driving along with the warning on my dashboard. I attempted to turn the vehicle off to see if it would reset, but it did not. I attempted to open and close my tailgate. I could only open my tailgate with the push button on my dashboard. I had to manually close my tailgate due to my buttons on my car and my key fab failing to work. Next while driving, I could hear the locking mechanism on my tailgate continuously locking and unlocking. Of course this particularly concerned me because I have 3 young children and their safety as well as mine was in danger. It was unclear if my tailgate was going to open while driving. Such an action could potentially cause a serious threat or harm to myself, my family or other vehicles on the road.
The blind spot system was a problem when I purchased the car, it spent 15 days in service in the first 30 days of ownership to address the issues. Now, I after another light came on I discovered 9 open recalls on the vehicle that were not disclosed prior to purchase.
Backup camera stopped working for no reason, says camera system failure and is a black screen. Research says this is a recall but my dealership says it is not.
The vehicle's auto idle stop system is malfunctioning, resulting in the engine failing to restart from a complete stop. This total failure has occurred on five separate occasions, including while stopped in active traffic intersections. Prior to these total restart failures, the vehicle showed the following symptoms: 1) initially, the vehicle experienced rough engine idling, abnormal vibrations, and a raw gasoline odor after driving. 2) this progressed to a noticeable delay between releasing the brake pedal and the engine attempting to ignite, during which the starter sometimes sounded strained. 3) this has culminated in the current defect where the engine shuts off normally when stopped at an intersection, but completely fails to immediately restart when the brake is released. This defect completely immobilizes the vehicle in active traffic lanes, exposing us to an immediate and severe risk of a rear-end collision. When the engine fails to restart, the vehicle locks the transmission out of drive and triggers a warning on the dashboard. It is a highly hazardous situation, especially with a lot of distracted drivers on the roadways.
I've had several incidents of my car stalling occur since the purchase of the vehicle over the span of 16 months, probably around a dozen times or so. I will stop at a stop light and the vehicle's idle-stop system does not function properly. The vehicle shuts off but does not auto-restart. When I try to manually restart, nothing happens. There have been times where it took several times before the vehicle started back up. Even more seriously, I've stopped in the middle of traffic and the same thing happened. We have had a couple of very scary incidents of cars having to move over a lane to pass our idle vehicle. Thankfully no car hit us due to our idled vehicle. We have owned this vehicle for less than 1. 5 years and have had two battery replacements. I've also had the vehicle not start from my garage or parking lot. When I try to start the vehicle a second time, there are times where the start button feels very firm and doesn't push down easily. I have to push the start button several times before the vehicle starts. I'm grateful there have not been any major accidents occur but this is an extremely unsafe situation for the driver and their passengers.
When those error codes appear, those safety features become unavailable during driving. These error usually come up when I just start the car.
My 2024 Honda Odyssey ex-l has a recurring auto idle stop failure. About 1–2 times per week, when stopped at a light and auto idle stop engages, the engine fails to restart properly when I release the brake. The engine sputters or shuts down, the battery warning light comes on, and the vehicle shifts itself into park. I then have to hold the start button for several seconds to restart the engine. This creates a safety risk because the vehicle becomes disabled in active traffic when the light turns green. The vehicle was previously taken to a Honda dealer for this issue, and the battery was replaced, but the problem continues.

When accelerating from a stop position while pushing on the accelerator the vehicle will not move. Takes a couple seconds. Almost struck by oncoming car when attempting to turn left onto main road. Happens frequently. Next: left sliding passenger door doesn’t close all the way then opens back up. Takes several attempts before it decides to close or with my assistance. Third: rear cargo door shuts without me pushing the button. Alarm sounds and immediately shuts. Been hit in the head once while closing. I’ve seen complaints about this and Honda is apparently aware. Last; the car will inadvertently emergency brake when an oncoming vehicle approaches from the front. Very disturbing when traveling at any speed going into an instant stoppage.
I went to open back tailgate with key fob, no sound or anything - tailgate did not open. I tried inside vehicle buttons for back tailgate and would not respond - no sounds or anything. Nothing was obstructing the back gate on the outside or interior of vehicle to prevent it from opening. I found a video of a 2021 Odyssey having water leaks into the car from the sliding door and rusts the power module causing it to short. So, my husband opened the back fuse box and got into the back panel and removed and sure enough there is water damage to the module. It is about $400 to replace and it is only a Honda dealership part. This is a safety issue because there is no way to manually open back tailgate in case of an emergency. If water is slowly leaking and causing corrosion, this needs to be fixed by Honda.

Many, many times vehicle stop/start feature has failed to start car. Have been stranded at busy intersection having to put car in park and restart car. Extremely dangerous. Took car to dealer and they deny there are any problems.
2024 Odyssey sport VIN [xxx] in the drive through lane at a reataurant activated the auto start stop feature and shut off the van. The van did not restart when trying to move foreward again and had to cycle the starting ignition system via placing van in park and pressing the start button. Taking the van to the hennesey Honda dealer in woodstock GA for inspection. Thank you [xxx] [xxx] [xxx] or [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. The 2012 Honda Odyssey alternator caught on fire after the battery light came on which luckily I, the driver, was able to put out. The next day I towed the vehicle to boyd Honda auto in oxford, nc, where they confirmed with diagnostic that the alternator was overworking and that there was a seeping spool valve. This seeping spool valve is a manufacturer’s defect.

On Wednesday night, the battery light initially came on and after a few minutes the van had this burning smell so I pulled over and the alternator was on fire. I put it out with several bottles of water from papa john’s. Today, at boyd Honda in oxford said in the diagnosis that there was a sweeping spool valve that had leaked which must have caused the alternator to blaze because this is a manufacturer’s defect from Honda.
The monocular camera in the windshield failed and multiple warnings are present. It has been well known by multiple consumers the camera fails more often in the 2018 - 2020 Honda Odyssey.
This is the second time I have taken it to the dealership. When sitting at a stop and the automatic stop and start happens, it acts like it does not want to crank back up. Last time the dealership said it was the battery; they replaced the battery, but that has not fixed the issue. If I am at a stoplight and it does not start back, that is not a good feeling my wife now does not want to drive the van anymore because of the seriousness of this issue as well has having young children in the car. This is a van that was bought brand new and has been in the shop more than it has been driven.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the idle stop feature turned off. The contact stated that the parking brake unexpectedly engaged, and the vehicle shut off with the message “idle stop not available” displayed. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. Additionally, shifting the vehicle out of park became difficult, and the contact had to wait an extended period before the vehicle could be restarted. The contact stated the failure would not occur while the idle stop feature was engaged. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer informed the contact that the failure could not be duplicated. The contact was advised to return the vehicle if the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired, and the dealer refused to disengage the idle stop feature. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.
Multiple times of driving the vehicle as I am trying to press the gas pedal while driving it acts like it is not working and suddenly it stutters and stalls. The car will shut off and put you into to neutral while you try and pull over to the side of the road without being hit. It happens randomly and without rhyme or reason. After it shuts off codes are thrown such as brake failure, emissions failure, hill assist failure, steering failure, and lane assist failure. The car will be really hard to restart and if eventually will and then everything will disappear and go back to normal. Codes leave and car drives fine until it messes up again. First time it happened was months ago from this report, and then it happened monthly, weekly and now almost daily but only when you try and drive. Very unsafe and there’s no reason cars should stall at high speeds going down interstates!.
Issue: intermittent infotainment failure – most network connection lost I am reporting a recurring electrical failure involving the infotainment system in my 2019 Honda Odyssey. The system intermittently loses all audio and displays a “most network connection lost” message. At times, the screen also goes black and reboots. This issue has occurred repeatedly over time, especially after extended driving (e. G. , long trips). The audio will stop working completely, and the system may or may not recover after restarting the vehicle. Multiple repair attempts have been made, including replacement rear entertainment system. Despite these repairs, the issue continues to occur. Based on the error message and symptoms, this appears to be a failure within the most communication network, potentially involving the amplifier or related components. This creates a significant distraction while driving, as the system becomes nonfunctional and unpredictable. I am unable to access hands free phone capability and navigation features. I am also unable to access the heating and cooling features in the car when the screen is black. This has been happening since about one week after I purchased the vehicle in 2021. I am concerned that this may represent a broader defect affecting multiple vehicles.
Multiple times since purchasing the vehicle, the engine fails to restart after the automatic idle stop feature engages at red lights or stop signs. When I release the brake to resume driving, the vehicle attempts to restart but makes a struggling or grinding noise and then stalls completely, similar to a dead battery. The vehicle becomes unresponsive and does not restart immediately. I am forced to turn the car off and attempt to restart it multiple times, often waiting several minutes before the engine turns back on. This has occurred in traffic, creating a safety hazard due to vehicles behind me and my inability to move the car. The issue appears to be related to the automatic idle stop/start system and may involve the starter or battery failing to properly restart the engine.
On April 13, 2026, I brought my 2019 Honda Odyssey to a Honda dealership in chicago, IL for a dealer-initiated recall service. The dealer contacted me and asked me to come in. Before the recall service, the vehicle had zero warning lights, zero error codes, and was operating completely normally. Immediately after the recall service was completed, the following warning lights appeared on the dashboard: brake system warning, hill start assist problem, vsa (vehicle stability assist) warning, and additional stability/steering system warnings. None of these warnings existed before the service. I returned to the dealership the same day. The service team cleared all error codes. However, within minutes of driving off the lot, all warning lights reappeared. This confirms the issue is persistent and not a one-time post-update self-check. I returned a second time. The service manager stated the warnings were not caused by the recall service and refused to investigate further. The dealer quoted $800 for diagnostic work. I also contacted american Honda by phone and was told they could not intervene. With the brake system and vsa warnings active, the anti-lock braking system and vehicle stability control may not be functioning properly. This puts me and other drivers at risk, especially in emergency braking situations and on slippery roads. This pattern of multiple safety warnings appearing immediately after recall service on 2019 Honda Odysseys has been reported by other owners. The vehicle and its warning lights are available for inspection upon request.
Our Odyssey is equipped with idle stop. Sometimes when idle stop engages, the engine won't start again afterwards. We need to turn the car off completely, and then try again. Usually it turns on after doing so. We try to always turn off the idle stop when we start up the vehicle, but sometimes forget. This hasn't led to an accident yet, but has led to some angry vehicles when we can't move when a traffic light turns green. To be clear, this was not an isolated incident, but happens somewhat regularly if idle stop isn't turned off. Honda dealers have told us they don't have any fix, and have recommended that we could purchase a third party "idlestopper".
When I am stopped at a stop light or in traffic my auto start fails and kills the electric in my vehicle when I push the pedal to go. This has happened several times and in one instance, almost caused me to be rear ended. It took several attempts to restart the car all while other cars are buzzing past me. It is currently at the Honda dealership for the 4th or 5th time for this same issue. My battery was replaced all ready thinking that was the solution, but it was not. I personally know of two other people having this exact issue with their vans.
I am submitting a formal safety complaint regarding a failure of the power tailgate system on my 2023 Honda Odyssey. The issue involves water intrusion into the liftgate control system, which has resulted in corrosion and subsequent failure of the power tailgate. This malfunction presents both a safety concern and a significant reliability issue, particularly for a vehicle of this age and mileage. What is most concerning is that this does not appear to be an isolated incident. There is a documented history of similar failures in Honda Odyssey vehicles, including prior class action litigation related to tailgate and electrical system defects. Despite this, the issue does not appear to have been adequately addressed or corrected in newer models, including the 2023 version. My vehicle has approximately 30,500 miles and is only slightly outside of the warranty period. I was explicitly assured at the time of purchase that the vehicle was reliable and that the manufacturer would stand behind it. However, I have since been informed that this repair will not be covered, despite the apparent design flaw and known history of the issue. A power tailgate failure is not merely an inconvenience—it can pose safety risks, especially when transporting passengers, children, or cargo. A malfunctioning liftgate can fail to open or close properly, potentially causing injury or limiting access in urgent situations. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this matter further, as it appears to be part of a broader pattern affecting Honda Odyssey vehicles. Consumers should not be responsible for costly repairs stemming from known defects that have not been properly resolved. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I am happy to provide any additional documentation or details if needed. Sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
