We came home from the movie theater (which was only 5 miles away) and parked our car in the our driveway. When my husband turned off the car, we immediately smelled something burning. We see smoke coming up from the hood of the car. My husband, kids and I immediately got out of the car and see wafts of smoke rising from the hood. We see fire at the under bed of the car. Within 3 minutes fire was coming up through the hood of the car. The entire hood of my car was up in flames (4-5ft tall) within 5 minutes from smoke to full fire. Firefighters thankfully put out the fire within 8 minutes from when it started. The hood had disintegrated and the entire engine and all the parts in the hood were burnt and melted. My windshield shattered from the heat. This car was less than 2 years old, 37,000 miles on it. It was bought and service los regularly at the dealership. There is no reason why the car would just combust out of the blue. Called Honda of America with no avail. And refusal of any investigation. The entire incident was captured on our security camera.

Hello, I have a 2010 Honda Odyssey. 2-3 months ago my wife had to pull our van over the road because of a significant shaking (vibration) of the whole vehicle. She got pretty scared and gave me a call. Then, we took the vehicle to the dealer that we had purchased. We have been told that spark plugs had oil leaked through the engine. They replaced the spark plugs and the issue of significant shaking was resolved. Since then, I have been checking the oil level and each week I am adding a quarter of oil. Then, I have gone through some search and found that 2008-2013 Odyssey models are powered by a six-cylinder engine with a variable cylinder management (vcm) system. The system is designed in a way that allows oil to leak into the engine's combustion chamber, leading to premature spark plug degradation, reduced fuel economy, and excessive oil consumption. As a result, many Odyssey owners report having to replace their spark plugs frequently and refill the motor with oil between oil changes. This is what I am exactly having. I have called Honda customer care and have been told that your van is not under warranty anymore as it is 8 years 7 months old and if it was less than 8 years, it was going to be covered under warranty. My concern is excessive oil leakage on a long trip can cause significant engine heating and/or significant shaking of whole vehicle may repeat when I am on an interstate and my whole family can face an serious accident issue. I appreciate your helps in getting Honda to fix my engine as this fix is quite expensive for my budget. Thank you very much and best regards.

It was little cold night. I drove on freeway for 40minutes with kids without central heating. When we got home, I wake them up. I found my young daughter at back seat, she couldn't wake up unusually. She was sleeping, leaning toward rt. Side cup holder side at back seat. I saw her face was so red like first degree burn and her hair was all wet and her body was so sweating. It was unbelievable that the whole surface next to rt. Back seat was extremely hot!!! even though the van engine was stopped. I immediately tried to her cool down. My kids told me. "ever since we bought this van, when the van's engine was turning on, back seat rt. Side body was always hot. " next morning, I took the van to Honda service. But it could not fixed for 3days and no one called me for updating info. The van is still in the service. One of technician told me from the service, it has been problems for 4years. I called Honda customer service, but no answer. I am trying to ask them buy back program. It is extremely dangerous for family with young children. This is not first time problem for this new van. I already had several problems. 1. It was not starting engine several times on the 1st week of purchase. 2. Brake was completely not moving more than one hour and not starting engine together on the 2nd week of purchase in the parking lot. 3. Clicking and clucking noise at rear of lt. Side with rt. Turning with brake all the times. 4. The van's horn by itself making noise for 20minutes on freeway driving. The Honda service couldn't find the causes. They just removed van's security alarm. Honda service didn't allow me for a rental van. I am expecting Honda's immediate and appropriate customer care for buy back program. Until now, this brand new van went to 9times services for 3months without fixing, 11days in the service, our family are very having hard time for normal living life with kids.

The minivan was being driven at about 30mph when the idle suddenly jumped to 3500 rpm. The brake had to be applied to keep the car from dangerously accelerating. The driver was able to pull the minivan into a gas station. The vehicle was turned off then back on a few minutes later. The minivan immediately idled at 3500 rpm again. After letting the vehicle sit turned off for 20 minutes, it was turned on and showed no further problems. In the past two years there have been three similar incidents with this vehicle. Outside temperature may be a contributing factor since it has always happened in a temperature of 80+ degrees fahrenheit. After letting the car sit for 10-20 minutes, the problem goes away. The local Honda dealership investigated the problem, but found no computer codes or other signs of problems. We are concerned this problem could cause an accident and that the problem may occur in other Odyssey's of this year.

I've noticed on cold nights/days (temps below 40 degrees). The engine temp is slightly lower than normal. The vehicle at a complete stop (at stop lights) then go that while I accelerate it stalls, the gas pedal would go down but would not accelerate then after a few seconds would jerk into speed. I've had 4 other Honda's and this is the first one that has done this.

2003 Odyssey approximately 67k miles developed fluid leak in past week. Vehicle had been serviced regularly. While driving with family coolant leaked onto exhaust system causing smoke and had to pull off interstate. Engine had operated normally and there were no warning indicators or abnormal temperature gage readings. Had vehicle towed to local Honda dealer. Diagnosed as leaking head gasket. Upon removal of the cylinder head, the head bolts pull from the block ports with the bolt threads. Apparently head bolts had become loose given the thread failure in the block and allowed leakage of fluids in the cylinder head. Honda stated that the engine will need to be replaced at a cost of 3k++. Apparently this same issue has occurred to several other 2003 Odyssey owners according to on-line search. The dealer was at a loss to explain the failure of the bolts at the given mileage. It appears that this could be a defect in the block design or manufacture and could lead to premature engine failure. Honda should address this issue as well as automatic transmission and egr valve defects which have also been a continual problem with the 2003 Odyssey. Very disappointed in the reliability of this van.
Transmission failed egr valve failed.
I have a check engine light for p0401 code for clogged ege system and p1739 for the transmission code my transmission was already replaced this is the 2nd transmission from Honda. On August 2010 my check engine light came on I took the car to pep boys. They pulled up the 2 codes p0401 and p1739 for clogged egr system and transmission code. I replaced the egr valve and still the same code came up. My car is now out of warranty and there is a service bulletin that has to be performed to unclogg the egr system that is to Honda bulletin 00-009 to drill a hole in the manifold and install a pipe. This should have been done under waaranty it is a known defect. The transmission is also bad a gain because it has the p1739 code. I want bothof these fixed under the warranty.

This vehicle has encountered numerous engine and transmission problems since we acquired it in 2006. The transmission failed at just over 100,000 miles. After a huge fight with Honda they reluctantly agreed (because it was just outside of the "warranty extension" for this known defect) to pay half the cost of the repair. Check engine lights continued to come on, in addition to other issues, including egr problems, despite replacing the egr, etc. The vehicle is now at approximately 165,000 miles and the transmission has failed again!!.
The contact owns a 2002 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that there was a strong sweet smell coming from the engine. The dealer found trash in the blower motor and stated that the engine head was cracked. While removing the head of the engine, the thread came out with the bolt since nothing was holding the engine in place and that also caused the head gasket to blow. The contact is concerned about the safety risk since the engine can come apart while driving. The current mileage was 69,700 and the failure mileage was 68,000. Updated 12/09/09
updated 12/10/09. The consumer stated the egr valve began malfunctioning just after the vehicle was serviced at the dealership. Updated 09/13/10.

In April 2009, my check engine light(cel) came on while driving and the car stalled when I stopped. It restarted and would repeat this with each stop. I took it to my usual garage (the light went off on the way there!) and they said the only code that come up was p0172 for rich fuel, they put fuel injector cleaner in the gas and it drove fine--which it does with the engine light off. In may, the car 's cel was still sporadically coming on and stalling, and I called the 800# for Honda customer service and spoke with a riano. When I told him of my car's symptoms and asked if there were any known problems going on or recalls about this he said "no", and to just take it to the dealer for a check. As the light was off at that point and what I'd gone through at the other garage I decided to wait until the light was on. On July 20th, I was surfing the internet for solutions to this problem and found the dot site which mentioned the egr valve problem and the extended warranty of 8 yrs and 80,000 miles for replacement by Honda. My mileage had just passed 80,000 that weekend. I called the 800# for Honda and spoke with a brian who stated that my car had been made June 26, 2001 and it was too late for me to be covered under the warranty extension. I took it to bill page Honda in falls church, va, (cel still off at this time) , they said it was the egr valve plus a third pressure switch. If I'd been told of the egr problem in may when I asked riano I would have taken the car in then and been well under the time and mileage for the replacement. I feel they owe me the $835. 70 for repairs as they "lied by omission". Thank you for any help in this matter.

The contact owns a 2001 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the check engine and traction control system lights remained illuminated after the vehicle was started. The mechanic stated that there was an egr valve failure. The contact received a recall notice in 2005 for the egr valve. At the time of the recall, the check engine light was not illuminated and the dealer stated they would only check it if the light was illuminated. The recall was good for 80,000 miles or eight years. Currently, the dealer has refused to repair the vehicle due to its mileage. The NHTSA recall # was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 95,000.
My vehicle began to rev like it was in neutral when I was driving at low speed or when I proceeded from a stopped position. I took my vehicle to south shore Honda. On sat 5/26/07 was told that it was the egr valve and that it was still covered under a special warranty. I was told that I had other issues. 1. Front engine mount $362. 75, 2. Side engine mount $219. 65 3. Dealer recommended fuel injector and valve cleaning 193. 90 total $843. 26 with tax. Three days later same problem with the engine rev like it was in neutral. Took vehicle back to Honda on 6/2/07. This time I was told that it was the transmission and that it would cost $4900. 00 to fix. Vehicle has 42,839 miles. Spoke to service manager about all the events and said he would call Honda hq and get back to me. I will give an update as soon as I hear from the service manger.
The contact owns a 2000 Honda Odyssey. The vehicle made a noise when accelerating and the check engine light illuminated. The mechanic stated that the vehicle needed an egr replacement kit. The dealer would not replace free of charge. The failure mileage was 99,000 and the current mileage was 105,000.
Bought the Honda in may 2004. Noticed a slight hesitation at times when engine was not warmed up. I complained about it in my new car survey form and each time it was serviced. On 8-5-05 they replaced egr valve, as it sometimes would cause this failure. On 2-5-07 it totally quit as I was starting a turn into pep boys parking lot, if anyone would have been coming out I would have run into them as I had no steering nor brakes. Took it into the dealer and said I wanted it fixed before I would have an accident. I had mentioned something about the lemon law and they said I would have to contact Honda of America, which I did. End result was dealer took car for three days in March 2007. They tested it but could not make it fail so nothing was done. Both Honda of America and the dealer gave me their final comment: if they can't see a failure there is nothing they can do for it.

While on a roadtrip, the check engine light went on. Dealer replaced egr valve because there was a piece of metal stuck on it. On the return trip, the check engine light went on again. Mechanics at the dealer have found large quantities of metal in the engine. Mechanics have not seen this problem previously and is currently communicating with Honda engineers regarding this matter.

Condenser problems. . In hot June - the first day that temperatures were almost 100 degrees we experience our first set of many problem with this van. We had owned vehicle for 2 months and only put 2700 miles on it. We had experience a condenser explosion. We were sitting @ stop light and I heard a pop and steam rolled all around vehicle. Had vehicle towed to shop to find out that condenser had a bad spot in it and would be covered by warranty. Before it was declared that it was covered under warranty - we keep being threaten by service writer if it's not warranty related that I would owe checkout fees, what it would take to fix it and the complete rental bill. Appears that front bumper and condenser design was not thought out. I agree with the other complaints that a grille or a mesh area should cover the large opening. Fyi, we were told, by dealership, that most of the vehicles have not been covered under warranty - but ours appeared to have a weak spot in the condenser.
The fan in the vehicle is blowing hot air. When vent is used (110 degrees) outside temperature is about 70 degrees. It is apparent that the air coming from vent has been heated. The engine or hot air from engine has leaked into the air intake. In order to be comfortable in vehicle, air conditioner must be used excessively in order to cool down constant flow of hot air coming from vent pipe. The problem is most apparent when vehicle is stopped or at low speeds. Dealer reports they cannot do anything since this is a design problem. This leads to decreased fuel efficiency.
The caller said the passenger side sliding door opens without warning. It happens when driving. The indicator light comes on , and the alarm goes off. The caller says the door does not open all the way. Had it to the dealer 10 times for this problem. Dealer said it was dirty connections and did not do anything to fix it. Manufacturer will offer no help for free. Also, the caller received a recall letter concerning gas recirculation valve ( egr valve). The manufacturer will not approve the recall work. Also wanted to take vehicle to the dealer. The rotors were resurfaced, the seat reclined when the consumer exited the vehicle.
When driving 55 mph or more vehicle hesitates. Dealer states the egr valve fails to open.
2002 Honda Odyssey. Consumer states problems with vehicle transmission and other problems the consumer stated the vehicle would jerk and sputter on acceleration. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem. Three months later, the vehicle was exhibiting the same problems. The dealer then found metal shavings in the transmission, which was replaced under warranty. One month later, the vehicle was still shuttering, but the problem could not be duplicated. The van was back at the dealer due to the engine light illuminating and the jerking and shuttering was still present upon acceleration. The egr valve, timing belt, motor mounts and pcm were replaced. The transmission was replaced again.
2001 Honda Odyssey which is now on its 5th transmission and has 104,850 miles. Contact stated vehicle lurched forward at low speeds between 2-3 on the rpm gauge. Dealership could not duplicate problem. . The consumer stated the first time the transmission failed, it ceased to shift between gears. Every time the transmission was replaced it was because of a different problem. The egr was replaced due to internal damage. The engine and tcs lights had illuminated. The dealer stated a code determined there was a problem with the torque converter which was electrical. The front and side motor mounts were replaced.
Consumer stated while driving, the check engine light illuminated, consumer was then informed that bad fuel may have been used, and the dealer cleaned the egr system, however several weeks later consumer received a noticed regarding the pcv and egr clogging, consumer then petitioned the dealer for a refund, and was susequently reimbursed.

Refer to odi#755486- dealer visit today- code 31-2 pfinh signal--dealer called american Honda tech line for assistance, they state the tcs light will come on for egr code, they state the tcs system is operational, tcs code is a false code due to momentary interuption of signal to primary control module, and is a characteristic of the car. Car after 7 visits has not been repaired.
The engine light and traction control light came on several times. Each time it was taken to the dealer for this problem and the dealer said the problem was the egr valve system. Also, the exhaust gas recirculation system failure caused the vehicle to lurch forward and stall while driving.
2003 Honda Odyssey vehicle quality and vehicle service** the consumer stated the dealership was doing dishonest business practices. The consumer stated the dealership did not do enough to help with the problems he was experiencing with his vehicle. The consumer stated after the recall was performed regarding the automatic transmission, the tcs and engine light illuminated. It was later determined that the problem was due to a faulty egr valve. The part was not available, so the dealer reset the light, however the next day it illuminated again. The consumer was later involved in an accident, which the consumer believed was due to mechanical problems with the vehicle. The consumer stated the steering was off center, it was recommended that an alignment be performed, the consumer was told the steering problem was due to the accident.
Consumer states the van stalls when driving and the engine malfunction indicator light is on. Consumer was able to restart vehicle. This has happened 5 times. Dealer found vehicle is stalling because there is insufficient air flow caused by a defective exhaust gas recirculation system. However, there will be a delay on repairs due to lack of parts.
