8 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2013 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/21/2020

While driving on a two lane road in warren county, indiana, and trying to pass a farm vehicle at 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and check engine light started flashing. My vehicle had enough momentum to get around the farm vehicle. Once able to stop, I shut the vehicle off. I restarted the vehicle expecting to see the check engine light, but it was not there, and vehicle ran normally. The next day I purchased an obdii code reader, and vehicle registered a p0303 code. Vehicle has approximately 166,000 miles.

9 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/24/2020

The check engine light started to blink and the vsa came on as well. This happened after I pulled into our driveway thank goodness because the engine started to shake the car. We took the van in our local dealership and it had a p0302 code. Engine misfire. This was caused by oil getting into the spark plug. Piston and ring job was recommended. The 2012 Honda had a TSB 11-033 for this issue. We are being denied our claim. I am including a picture of our spark plug that shows where there was a lot of oil when it was fired upon along with talks I have had with Honda.

14 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2015 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/13/2019

While driving, the idle started to become rough and engine vibration increased. Check engine light and additional warning lights appeared in the dash. Error code p0302 was the primary error code for misfire cylinder 2 when the errors were scanned at home and confirmed by shop affiliated with car dealership. The spark plug in cylinder 2 was inspected and identified to be fouled and covered in oil. Additionally the ceramic was missing from the spark plug. This vehicle only has 50,785 miles, and this issue is similar to the class action lawsuit/service bulletin 13-081 issued to Honda vehicles (including Honda Odysseys 2011-2013) . However, this time Honda is telling me that this issue is not a powertrain warranty issue and that I am responsible for the cost of repairs although the problem follows the exact decision matrix found in this service bulletin from the logged error code to the fouled spark plug in a young motor. This vehicle has been serviced by the same Honda dealership since I purchased the vehicle used at 16k miles.

15 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2016 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/25/2019

Sudden loss of engine power while attempting to merge on a highway. Fortunately I had a shoulder to escape onto as I could not make it up to highway speed and could not merge. Found out afterwards that the cause was spark plug fouling as a build up occurs during eco mode as oil bypasses the piston rings on cylinders equipped with the Honda vcm (variable cylinder management) system. The build up continues until the engine begins to misfire and triggers the check engine light and the engine runs rough, stumbles and drives in 'limp along' mode. This problem has occurred multiple times (first occurrence 03/25/2019, latest occurrence 04/16/2020) and my local Honda service center has found diagnostic trouble code p0302 indicating a misfire condition in cylinder #2. Honda service people call it the 'piston ring problem' as it is a well know manufacturing defect that Honda describes in TSB 13-081 and resulted in a class action lawsuit (case no. 3:12-cv-1377-si) against Honda. The lawsuit was settled in 2014 and all 2008 thru 2013 Honda Odyssey models were covered and given an extended 8 year unlimited mileage drive train warranty in the settlement. Apparently the defect was not corrected in later models as my 2016 Honda Odyssey is now exhibiting the same exact symptoms. My Honda was 3 years old and had 69k miles at the time of the first occurrence. The problem has reoccurred multiple times and yet Honda has declined to cover the $3000 cost of replacing the piston rings (as recommended by the Honda service center) stating that my vehicle is out of warranty and my VIN is not covered by the settlement.

16 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2014 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/25/2019

Check emission message on dashboard with the check engine light on. On checking the codes via obd - it shows p3400 bank 1 valve stuck error code pointing to a faulty oil pressure switch. I check the engine oil level using the dipstick which shows the oil levels are within the limits on the stick. The dashboard message (check engine light + check emissions msg) suddenly appeared while driving on a warm afternoon at 45mph (about 15 minutes into the ride).

17 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2010 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/01/2019

Check engine light started flashing, vsa light came on, rough idle, felt like it was going to shut off when stopped at lights. Took my van in to see why check engine light was flashing. After diagnostics, was told that piston 3 was misfiring, and these engines are notorious for this misfire issue.

18 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2019 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/19/2018

On December 19, 2018, the day after we had the maintenance and brake fluid repaired, we were driving the car on a freeway. Suddenly, the car shook wildly for a moment and thick white smoke started to issue from the car. To make matters worse, the accelerator did not work, so our car could only reach speed up to 25 miles per hour, much slower than the other cars honking and racing past us on the freeway. We barely made it to the next exit, where we had to park at the nearest gas station to check what was going on. We were under extreme danger and stress from this incident as it happened in the middle of the road and we were extremely close to colliding with other cars. Honestly, no words can dare to express the fear and dread of imminent death we experienced that time. We thought we were going to be crushed to death at that moment. After a few minutes in a nearby parking lot, when we started the car again, the check engine light was gone, and the accelerator started working normally. However, although the problem has seemed to have gone away for now, we do not know when or where it may occur again. It scares us that the car seems so innocently normal again.

19 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2017 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/25/2017

Brand new car 2017 Honda Odyssey with less than 300 miles driving on a winding road uphill and the check engine light starts flashing. Manual advises to pull over to turn off and let the car cool down. Did that and then the vehicle stability assist light also goes on. Car starts to shake when you accelerate. Honda dealership said it was a misfire and covered under factory warranty. How can a new car already have engine problems??.

20 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2015 Honda Odyssey

Less than 2 year old Honda Odyssey in perfect condition. For no reason charcoal canister sensor failed and cause the check engine light on. At the same time tail light bulb is out.

21 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2013 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/15/2017

Check engine light came on at 77250 miles dealershipinsp check engine light came on at a check engine light came on at approximately 77230 miles Honda dealership diagnosed as code p0302 misfire found filed plug replaced piston rings on cal 1-3 and replaced spark plugs 1-4 . This is not the work scope called for by the 2013 recall for piston problems but could be related. I am concerned since I am the original owner of a2003 Honda Odyssey with 372000 miles on it without requiring any engine work other than maintenance specified and performed by Honda . I am thankful for the engine warning light however the sudden stopping to resulting from its failure could cause a serious or fatal accident. R.

22 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/19/2015

While driving vehicle check engine light came on and car was running very poorly. Took car to local auto parts store, employee hooked car to diagnostic computer and misfire codes came up and car was only running on 2 cylinders. Drove car to mechanic. After diagnosing problem was explained I would need a full tune up and head replacing. After further exploring mechanic noticed metal filings in cylinder and recommended engine replacement due to damage to housing and possibly to rings. Which would cost more then value of car.

23 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/11/2015

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. While driving approximately 40 mph with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle started to violently shake and the traction control and check engine warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 94,000.

24 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/07/2015

While exiting a parking lot and accelerating to aprox. 20 mph, the vehicle began to shudder and vibrate violently accompanied by the illumination of the check engine warning light. We shortly afterward noticed a reduction in power. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, who stated that, there were several misfire codes generated when diagnosed. The repair shop diagnosed the failure as the cylinder 5 coil having melted into the cylinder. As a result, the shop had to remove the cylinder head in order to remove the coil and spark plug from the vehicle. The repair shop stated that the failure was caused by the spark plug becoming loose and fuel leaking into the cylinder head chamber. The repair shop stated that this was the third of these failures seen by them. The dealer of purchase and the manufacturer were alerted of the failure but offered no resolution. The dealer (keeler Honda, latham NY) was in fact quite rude about the failure in general. We were concerned of the safety risk involved with the failure. The vehicle was repaired with the total bill of $2411. 00. The failure mileage was 90,108.

25 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2013 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/20/2014

This second occurrence, as we started to drive from park position, the car was running rough and the check engine light and traction light came on. The dealer diagnosed it is the piston rings, caused by bad rings that let the spark plugs get fouled. This appears to be the same issue as recall # 13v382000 where they changed the short block. They want to fix the piston rings and leave it at that. That is not proper mechanical procedure.

26 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2010 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/28/2014

While driving on the freeway the check engine light illuminated, 10/28/2014. I took the vehicle to the dealer where they advise the dtc code p3497. They advised that the rocket arm bank, oil pressure switch, needed to be replaced on both sides. I had the vehicle repaired. A prior incident occurred on 01/15/2014 where the check engine light illuminated while driving on the freeway. I took the vehicle to the dealer where they advised the dtc code p3400. They advised that the oil pressure switch was faulty. I had the vehicle repaired.

27 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/27/2014

The check engine light went on while I was driving on a four lane highway at 65 mph. There was no warning or previous sign of problems. The vehicle had not been driven under harsh conditions, and it was maintained appropriately. I was able to pull car into a dealership within less than 1 mile. I felt I had lost acceleration and power. It turns out that the spark plug blew through the aluminum cylinder head and I lost 2 cylinders on a v6 engine. I'm told that metal dropped into the cylinder scoring it deeply enough that it can't be repaired. There appears to be a wealth of documentation of this problem for Honda engines and Honda has denied any defect or responsibility. Fortunately, I was not in any accident or injured but this seems to be a safety problem, had I been on a major freeway, I'm not sure this would have worked out the same. The car will now have to be totaled a the repair costs cannot be justified ($6,000-7,500). Honda offered no good will in any way.

28 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/18/2014

Our Odyssey has always shifted a little rough, but I attributed that to its age but on 7/18/14 we were on grocery store visit and the check engine light, tcs light, and maintenance required light all came on. We took it to local mechanic to get the codes read and they said it was the transmission control system, but it was driving fine so I kept going and had our normal mechanic take a look at it about a week later. He too said it was the transmission control system, and that we shouldn't need a new transmission, so take it to Honda and get them to look at it. The service advisor kept saying "this vehicle isn't going to go very far, it's going to leave you on the side of the road" but, we don't have that kind of money right now, and since it's driving "ok" just shifting the same as it always has, we decided to take it home.

29 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/29/2014

Check engine light and tcs light came on while driving the van at highway speeds. The transmission shifts smoothly and sounds fine, but the repair shop pulled a code of p0740--tc clutch failure. The transmission is failing, and this is apparently a common problem with Honda Odysseys. While our transmission lasted longer than many Odysseys' do, I think that transmission failure at 119k is unacceptable.

30 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/24/2014

On 04/18/14 I took my vehicle to tameron Honda because it was misfiring. The check engine light would come on then the engine would begin jerking and not responding. I paid $5940. 01 because they said the engine needed rebuilding. This is a lot of money but I did not have a choice in that they told me I would not get anything on a trade in and I really couldn't afford another car. I picked up the car after the repairs were complete and the next day I was at a stop trying to merge across a 4 lane road. The engine started misfiring again and I couldn't get above about 10 mph. No one hit me but it could have very easily been a bad accident. I have taken my vehicle back to tameron 4 more times with the same scenario. Twice I have been on the interstate and lost power to about 10 mph. Again I managed to pull to the side without getting hit. Just a lot of horn blowing. The dealership really didn't have an explanation. The last time I talked to the service manager who assured me the problem was fixed and it was probably due to my "fuel". They continued to let me drive the vehicle even though I was telling them what was happening. A couple of weeks ago I was on the interstate with my grandson in the car. The engine completely shut off like a switch had been pulled. I hit my hazard light button and managed to coast to the side of the road. I had to call a tow truck. The explanation given was the fuel tank indicator had broken and I was out of gas. They replaced the indicator and also replaced the fuel pump which was recalled. They didn't mention the recall. I know my vehicle has 133,000 miles but this doesn't seem right. I am suppose to have a rebuilt engine and I am just waiting for the next incident. Next time there may be a crash.

31 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/07/2014

On December 18, 2013, my check engine light came on. I took the van to an express oil change company the same day for an oil change and asked them to read the codes. The codes were random multiple cylinder missfires and they they advised me that I might need to have spark plugs changed at next oil change, but it should be fine to drive. The mileage on the van on that date was 94,482 miles. On February 7th, while driving to work, my check engine light began flashing and the van started to drive very sluggish. I called the mechanic I use for repairs and they advised me not to drive it other than to bring the van in. Upon reading the diagnostic codes, they stated that the spark plugs and coil packs needed to be changed. While attempting to remove the old spark plugs and coil packs, the coil pack and spark plug in cylinder 5 had completely melted and fused to the walls of the cylinder. My mechanic did some online research and spoke with a Honda technician and determined that the issue was due to a faulty vcm and that only replacing the head would not eliminate the problem. The Honda tech advised to replace the engine. These are the exact same symptoms as the class action law suit with 2008 Honda Odyssey engines.

32 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/14/2014

On my way to work on January 14, 2014, as I was getting up to speed (from 0 to 20), the engine revved around 2000 rpm, the transmission would not engage 2nd gear. I backed off the gas pedal and the transmission engaged. The check engine light lit up and I drove it to a Honda dealership. The service department said that their diagnostic revealed an internal issue with the transmission and would need replacement. I have owned 7 Hondas since 1983, and I have never had this type of problem. The van is at a local transmission shop rebuilding the transmission for $1500, Honda wanted $5300. The van has been well maintained over the years and I'm very surprised that the transmission would go at 141,000 miles, but transmission issues appears to be a problem with the Odyssey lineup over the years. Unfortunately, I was not made aware of these issues prior to purchase. Disappointing.

33 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2010 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/05/2013

Was driving at highway speed when engine encountered a severe rough idles and lost power. Check engine light started flashing and vehicle stability & traction control failure lights also illuminated. Honda dealer proximate to incident diagnosed as fouled spark plug related to cylinder deactivation system in car. Internet research indicates that this is a known and common occurance with Honda cars having a v6 engine with cylinder deactivation.

34 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/14/2013

My Honda Odyssey started showing symptoms of transmission failures on 14-July. Gears shifting between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd was noticeable, it would not pick speed while entering freeway. Also, check engine light came up, tcs starts blinking when this gears shift happening, also d sign blinks. I went to redwood city, CA Honda dealer, where I service my car all the time. . 35 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/21/2013

Check engine light on; Honda dealer talks about transmission issue and asking it to be replaced. Replacement cost: $6500 I heard that many other Honda Odyssey owners complaints about transmission problem and it has to be addressed that Honda Odyssey van is having critical transmission issue built between year 1999 to 2004. Transmission became defective with no reason, so much frustrated as vehicle has hardly done 100k miles.
