About 1:30 pm, may 23, 2015, I was driving my new 2015 Honda Odyssey ex on east bound of rt 529 (plainfild Ave) to rt 1 in edison, NJ, the left rear back michelin tire blew out about 100 yards away from the intersection. There was nothing on the road. Nothing was found on the tire. I called insurance company, towing company, and finally I found that a Nissan dealer in rt 1 was just 200 yards away. I slowly drove the vehicle to the dealer, replaced the spare tire. On Wednesday, I replaced a new michelin same tire in sweeney's gulf at east brunswick, NJ. Thursday, I went to autosport Honda dealer at bridgewater, NJ where I purchased the vehicle last October. But the dealer at first denied the tire had defect, then they told me that they didn't handle the tire warranty, I had to go michelin dealer. On Friday, may 26, I went to a michelin dealer in old bridge, NJ. The staff told me that I had to call michelin to see what I should do. I called and emailed michelin. Followed the instruction, I went to sts on rt 18 to check. Todd checked the tire and the rim, told me that the tire hit something, which cut the tire, not the defect because he saw a sesame big mark on the edge of the rim, which caused the blow out. But he couldn't answer my questions: why the front tire was fine? why the tire near the rim was no any damage, the blowout was in the middle of the side of the tire, 3 inches away from the mark on the rim? why the shap of the blowout was a irregular curve crack, no straight cutting edge as he said that something cut the tire? I didn't feel I hit anything. I didn't see anything on the road. I stayed there for about 1 hour before I took my car to Nissan dealer. 529 is a busy road, at least hundreds cars passed in one hour, no one blew out. It obvious that either nothing on the road, or some tiny thing which should not cause a tire blowout. So it is a defect which caused the blowout.

There is a class action suit presently being settled between owners of the Honda Odyssey van (equipped with "run-flat" pax tires) and Honda motor company and michelin tire company. The issue involves poor tread wear on these tires, the fact that the Honda van with these tires has no spare tire, and the fact the tire can only be changed by Honda dealers equipped with the "changing machine. " there are many sub-issues in the case which relate to passenger safety and security. I hope NHTSA is attuned to this class action suit, wherein thousands of Honda owners are affected. I was told by my own Honda dealer, that to cost to replace the worn-out tires, remounting and alignment, is over $1,200. Yipes!! worst yet, a family in this Honda van could have a flat tire on a motor trip, have no spare tire, and must "find" the Honda dealer who has the patented equipment to change the tire. If you breakdown on a weekend, I guess you must stay in a motel until the Honda dealer (if there is one) opens during the week days. The pax tires are a potential hazard to the safety and security of passengers in the Honda Odyssey touring model which is equipped with these tires. I hope NHTSA is monitoring this case, which is defined as follows:
re michelin north America, inc. . Pax system marketing and sales practices litigation (case no. 8:08-MD-01911-rwt). This case is being heard in a "fair settlement hearing: conducted in the united states district court, district of maryland, greenbelt division, 6500 cherrywood lane, greenbelt, MD 20770. Plaintiffs' attorney is james e. . Read more...

About half a year ago, one of two futura 2000 radial lte on our Honda Odyssey 2000 started vibrating at around 35 mph. I took the car to a tire shop to have the tire inspected. The tire was rebalanced and all four wheels aligned. The vibration continued until I moved the tire from the front to the rear a couple days later. Yesterday, almost at the end of a 1000 mile trip, vibrations re-emerged and got increasingly worse. Checking the side mirror I could see the tire material wobbling. We pulled over to put on the spare tire. At that time I noticed that about a 10 inch strip of tread had separated.

Today on i77-n close to charlotte, my rear tire was shredded to pieces and the vehicle had to be pulled over completely to the ramp. I had the vehicle on spare tire and got a brand new one put on. The tire that got busted was a michelin 60r16 fitted at costco in winston salem.

Honda Odyssey touring, michelin pax tire system is a consumer rip off. The tire wear is nowhere near what is claimed by the manufacturer and the rubber compound is so soft that they are punctured by every nail or screw on the road. Every flat costs a minimum of $50. 00 to fix because of the jel-pack required when patching. Honda does not provide a spare tire or even a donut spare for emergencies. The tires are supposed to run flat for 125 miles at 50 miles per hour. In rural arizona, 125 miles won,t get you anywhere near one of their " authorized, proprietary " repair places. I find that this auto is too dangerous to drive any place not near a repair station.

My wife and I purchased a new Honda Odyssey van in 2005 which was equipped with pax runflat tires. At the time, we were told that the tires would wear like regular non run-flat tires, and would be 10-15% more expensive to replace. We were also told that all Honda dealers would have the necessary equipment to service these special tires. None of these statemants has proven to be true. The tires are all worn out at 31k miles, and we were quoted a price of $1300 plus tax to have them replaced. Worse yet, our neartest dealer (flagstaff Honda) does not have the necessary equipment to service them 2 years after their release. To make things worse, we now have a flat and gettign it fixed will require us to drive 50 mph on a busy inerstate (where everyone else is doing 80+mph) which I refuse to do. Because of all these problems, I have elected to purchase new rims, tires and pressure sensors (plus a spare tire) all of which will cost over $1000. I consider this to be a defect and the tire system was not fairly explained, with all it's shortcomings or we would have never purchased this model.
Premature tire wear. Honda Odyssey touring has michelin pax tire system designated as a high-end premium feature safety system. These tires wear out in 23000 miles, which is well below standard tires offered on other Honda Odyssey packages. In addition, the pax system is a proprietary design offered only by one tire manufacturer, is not compatible with standard wheels, and requires dealer/tire service garages to have unique expensive mounting equipment. Few tire dealers support pax. Example: only one dealer in san diego supports pax. For travelers on the road who experience a failure, it will be difficult or impossible to locate a near by replacement. The Odyssey touring does not come with a spare tire, so the max run-flat distance of 100 mi may not be enough to reach tire store. The Honda sales representatives do not offer any of this information to prospective customers at the time of sale. The Honda Odyssey tour model can not be retrofitted with standard tires due to vehicle's computer system settings.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the run flats only work within a 50 mile radius. She stated that if she were to go beyond 50 miles. Unless she contacts a dealer. In order to change the run flats, certain technology is needed. The contact stated that she would be stranded without any options. The manufacturer agreed that it is a safety defect. The dealer stated that no repair was available and suggested she notify her attorney's general office. The current mileage is 30,000. Updated 02-01-08.
