I purchased brand new michelin defender tires three weeks ago from a michelin certified auto repair shop. Today we had a catastrophic blow out. . . Consistent with a manufacturer defect. We were driving less than one mile from our home, on a clear day, with no pot holes, or obstacles in the road. We did not hit or run over anything. We were driving less than 30 miles per hour. . . On a clear city street in virginia. The car immediately began to violently shake. . . . It was obvious the tire had a catastrophic failure. We went across the street to merchants tire and auto. The tire had four blow out holes on every single side of this tire. This tire is only 3 weeks old. It has less than 200 miles on it. Michelin refused to warranty this tire. They covered only 50 % of the tire. If I had been driving with my 4 children in the car on the highway. . . We would have been injured. The tire was confiscated (per michelin) by merchants tire and auto.

Incident date: Tuesday, October 23, 2012 approximately 1pm temperature: approximately 55 degrees road condition: dry tires: goodyear assurance fuel max installed: September 23, 2009 miles on tires at time of incident: 49,051 estimated tread life left: 4/32 number of persons in vehicle: 2 adults, 3 children while on a local shopping trip including travel on an interstate highway the right rear tire of the vehicle blew out. We had entered the interstate highway and had traveled about 5 miles. While passing a semi and in the left lane of the highway, at 70 mph, the right rear tire blew out. The vehicle started to vibrate and the tire was slapping the underside of the fender. Control of the vehicle was maintained and the vehicle was slowed down and moved to the center median. When traffic cleared, the vehicle was moved safely to the right shoulder of the highway. After exiting the vehicle, inspection of the right rear tire revealed a total blow out. The other members exited the vehicle and remained in the grass away from the vehicle while the tire was changed. When the tire was changed we continued to the next exit and used back roads to return home. New tires were purchased on Tuesday, oct 23, 2012. The tire specialist indicated that the probable cause of the blow out was hitting a pot hole.

While driving on the freeway, rear toyo tire blew out. Required replacing 2 tires, the one blow out and another in front that had tread separation issues identified by tire mechanic. Upon return from trip, taken back to installation dealer and they contacted toyo who offered a $30 refund on each. Since the original purchase was for 4 tires, the two remaining tires were also at risk for similar blow out. Toyo did not want to offer refund unless proof of tire rotation was provided. The issue was ultimately with a faulty blow-out (3 tire dealers stated that this was not a wear-and-tear issue but a defect) and not a matter of getting refund yet toyo's focus was on proving that the tires were not maintained rather than dealing with an obviously dangerous product out in the market.
Aug 2008, purchased 4 versado lx tires at 46851 miles. On 14 Aug 2011, had a tire blow on right rear on I-16. There was $75 damage to car as the tire tore the factory mud guard from the fender. Tire was replaced for $53 under warranty at 77968 miles. On 10 oct 11, returned to dealer and found 2nd tire separating. Replaced for $73 under warranty at 79720. On 23 may 2012, 3rd tire was found to be separating at 84275 miles. I contacted toyo by email. Rep called my local tire dealer, raffield tire, and discussed issue. Dealer was told to reinspect 4th tire closely while replacing the 3rd tire for $83 under warranty. It appeared to be ok. On 3 Jul 12 the 4th tire was replaced for $79 under warranty at 85676. Had long discussion with toyo customer service. Was told there were "no known issues with this tire". Very funny that all 4 tires for my vehicle failed. Tire dealer does rotation/balance/check every 5000 miles. Wanted toyo to replace this tire at their cost due to all of the trouble I have had. Rep refused, stating that the government would not let them do any customer relief other than the limited warranty on tire. Otherwise, "they would be guilty of hiding defect information from the government". I cannot believe there are no known issues if all 4 of my tires failed. They also could not pay for the repair I had done in Aug 2011 since the tire was not turned over to an independent 3rd party for analysis.

I was driving my 1999 Honda Odyssey van around ~10:00 pm on I-5 about 55 miles per house. All of a sudden rear driver side tire blew up. It is a michelin tire with 9,600 miles on it. The tire came brand new with the van which had ~9,600 miles. Discount tire professional examined the tire and did not find any damage to tire such as a nail or cut that would have resulted in blow up.

I have had two uniroyal tiger paw tires blowout while my car was being driven on the interstate. The blowouts occurred approximately 6 weeks apart with about 10,000 miles on the tires. When the first tire blewout my daughter was using the car and the tire store techician said he had never seen anything like that before, but would not say the tire was defective. When the second tire blew, the technician said it was obviously defective and when shown a picture of the first tire said it was defective too. After talking with several people at uniroyal, they replaced the rest of the tires. I have digital photographs of the tires.
While driving 70 mph rear driver's side tire blew out. Later, consumer found out that the rear passenger wheel produced a large hole in the middle. Dealer stated they were not covering it, and that consumer hit a pothole.
While driving 45 mph front right tire blew out. This caused the driver to almost lose control of vehicle. Had managed to pull to side of the road to change tire. Took vehicle to dealership, and mechanic could not find the cause.

On sept. 6, 2000 while driving on I-10 in mississippi my right front tire blew out in the fast lane with my self and two very young children on board. The cause of the blow out is unknow. I have my tires rotated on a regular basis. The tire store has comment that the tire is wearing in an unusaul pattern from the outside in, instead of how they normally wear the inside out. The van is in allignment. Honda has been worderful in helping me get the tire replaced. Six days after the blow out I got all new tires now kelly springfield due to another blow out scare with my remaing tires and due to the fact they have worn so badly down on the outside of all four tires. ( dot number: p215 tire size: 65r16 ).

My car came equipped with firestone tires. On June 14,2000, my right rear tire blew out on the highway. It was over 100 degrees, and the vehicle was traveling at 65 mph. The driver was able to safely maneuver the vehicle off the road. The entire outside wall of the tire was blown out, and the firestone dealer I took the tire to could find no puncture in the tire. The dealer (firestone tire & service in redwood city, 650-364-1900) told me they would send the tire to a lab for analysis. As of last week, they still had not received any word back from the lab. On July 28, the newly installed tire (with less than 1,000 miles on it) blew out under similar high heat-65 mph conditions. Again, the driver was able to negotiate off the road safely. I'm very concerned about the coincidence of two firestone tires blowing out under the conditions described. Has the ntsb received other compalints about blow-outs from car owners whose cars use the same tire brand (I realize these are not among the recalled tires). I have since replaced all the tires with michelin tires and contacted firestone about compensation and following up on the lab analysis. The second tire also suffered an exterior wall blow-out although it was not as severely damaged as the first. I still have the second blown-out tire and all the remaining firestone tires that came on my vehicle. I believe that other Odyssey owners should be made aware of the problems I experienced, and that firestone should examine tires beyond the recalled tires for possible defects. ( dot number: tire size: p21565r16 ).
