Dealer said they inspected and can't find anything I am very scared that this is a mayor issue and was also told by the dealer that there are no recalls for that year but it just doesn't make any sense that a car will do that for no reason. Driving home, the Sonata revved high and staled out, a tow truck had to be called on a busy interstate. The car still will not start, it is financed still and now will not run. This is consistent with the following recall information: summary: Hyundai motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to April 12, 2012 at Hyundai motor manufacturing alabama and equipped with either a 2. 0 liter or 2. 4 liter gasoline direct injection engine. In the affected vehicles, metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft. If the debris was not completely removed, oil flow may be restricted through the connecting rod bearings, causing connecting rod damage and possible engine failure. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure. 52 Engine Knocking Noise problem

My wife and I bought a 2011 Hyundai Sonata on August 28th, 2015 from a dealership, but after driving the vehicle for a period of 10 days, the engine keeps running with knocking noise; a noise which my wife and I were not sure as to which part of the engine it was emanating from. We though maybe it was just a rock and would subside after few drives, but it didn't. On September 25th, 2015, while my wife was driving to the store, the vehicle stalled at a stop sign, but after removing the keys off the ignition and re-cranking the engine, it started running and the knocking noise went off, but the engine light came on afterward. My wife took it to the dealership we bought it from for a check up and repair, but the dealership's maintenance shop was unable to fix the vehicle for the reason that it had not reached 30 days since we bought the vehicle for the warrant that we bought to kick in. This was very frustrating and puzzling for the dealership to act this way to a customer who just bought a vehicle.

53 Engine Knocking Noise problem

The engine is making a metallic knocking noise. Took it to Hyundai dealership for oil change on 10/11. They noted the issue was taken care of with the oil change which it was not. There is an interim notice recall on the vehicle and my car is affected. It states if you continue to drive the vehicle with the worn connecting rod bearing the bearing could fail and the engine could stall. When I contacted the dealership they stated it had been noted in my file, that there was no remedy at this time but to contact them once the remedy was ready. This is not acceptable. Vehicle stopped functioning at 60 mph on an interstate on a Friday night. Had to coast to side of road dodging other cars. Tried to restart vehicle with no luck. Electrical started going haywire. Interior lights started flashing as well as dashboard lights. Smoke was coming from hood of car. Within 20 minutes a road ranger checked the status of the car and said all fluids looked good. Battery tested good. But was unable to get vehicle to start. Two hours later it was towed to a Hyundai dealership. Was told it appears to be the engine but was told they replaced the starter first because they thought it was that. Finally, told it was the engine and it would need to be replaced. Thankfully it is still under warranty. It's last service was the middle of April. They told me that the steering is possibly going on it. They reported a knocking noise. Nothing has been done to steering as of yet but now that they will have car for up to 3 weeks will probably have them check that too especially after reading many of the complaints on this and other websites.

As a precaution, I pulled over to the shoulder. After bringing the car to a stop I noticed a burning smell. After opening the hood I discovered smoke coming from the engine area. I tried to start the car but to no avail. I immediately called roadside assistance and the car was towed back to pohanka Hyundai in capital heights MD. After an inspection of the vehicle, the technician discovered no oil was found on the dip stick and the engine had locked up! as I pulled up my last oil change record it showed I received 5 qts of 5w20 synthetic blend oil at 110,641 miles. I told the technician that I never had any leaks or knocking sounds. Also I never had my check engine light illuminate. It amazed me how after 5000 miles no oil was in engine and I had no apparent and visible leaks.

61 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

I was traveling down a highway when my engine started to make a knocking sound. The check engine light came on, and within 10 seconds my car stopped running. I was still moving when this happened. I was fortunate to be able to coast to a close by side road. I am gravely concerned that this could have happened on the interstate at higher speeds, and the potential consequences of such. I had the car towed to a dealer, and they tell me the engine is shot. I contacted Hyundai customer care, and their response was "what do you want me to do about it. " after more research, I have found numerous other instances of this engine failure. If this is an ongoing problem, I feel Hyundai should do something before someone gets killed when this happens. Please note I am the second owner of this car. The mileage at just over 85,000 is mainly highway miles, and the car is serviced regularly.

62 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

My husband was driving home from work and the engine started making a horrible knocking noise. This was on a Friday. We had the car towed to our mechanic the following Monday and he told us the whole bottom end of the engine had failed. Hyundai wouldn't honor our warranty because we didn't have all of our maintanence records for the car. We ended up paying for the engine to be replaced out of our pocket. When hyundia sent our mechanic the new engine it was the wrong one. My mechanic spend the next 3 weeks arguing with them over his fact. Finally after 6 weeks, hyundia agreed to source a second new engine and install it themselves. Even with this decision, they still wouldn't cover it under our warranty. They took an additional 4 weeks to install the engine. We paid for a rental car out of pocket while this was being taken care of. So ultimately, this cost us close to $6000 out of pocket when it should have been covered under our warranty. I will never purchase another Hyundai, nor will I recommend their products to my familiy and friends or anyone else I come in contact with. This has been an horrible experience.

64 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2014

Oil light blinked on and off twice. Car was making a knocking noise. Stopped to check oil; absolutely no oil in the vehicle. No sign of leak; no smoking; no other indication of problem. Put 3 quarts of oil in the car. Knocking sound was worse. Drove car home and haven't driven it since. This is one of many problems I've had with this car. I get regular oil changes. I haven't had the car looked at yet due to cost and out of warranty. I've read other complaints of loss of oil resulting in complete engine failure. There was absolutely no indication that the oil was even low which I attribute to the faulty electrical system since I've had problems with that as well. It's my opinion that this car is unsafe to drive. I've read this year model has over 900 problems while other year models have average of 230 something problems. Obviously, this car should be completely recalled and replaced by Hyundai dealer.
