Failure Date: 12/28/2016

Brought my 2011 Hyundai Sonata to jackson firestone bryant automotive in jackson, NJ to service brakes. The owner/technician of the service center said he observed a click in the steering when he drove it into the service center garage. He investigated the issue and found the steering column shaft "coupler" was not fastened or tightened as necessary. He warned me (the owner) that it was unsafe to drive the car. He proceeded to fix the breaks and offered to repair the steering issue but suggested I bring it a Hyundai dealership. I brought the Sonata to freehold, NJ Hyundai dealership where they confirmed the problem with the steering. I had the steering fixed at freehold Hyundai and was charged $390. 00.

38 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2016

Car stalled and engine shut down while trying to cross over a 4 lane highway came within 5 feet of a major collision with 2 approaching vehicles there is also another issue with the steering column. Hyundai chose to use a plastic bushing in the steering column that has completely failed at 65000 miles. The dealerships, 2 separate ones, state that this is not covered by the multiple other recalls with the steering. The bushing is hard plastic, about the size of a nickel and costs 2. 00 at the dealership. But they want 300. 00 labor to install it.

42 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2016

While driving, the steering column area rattles and makes noises. While steering on a turn at a street or gently at a slow speed (like in my driveway), the steering wheel does not feel like it used to and it clicks. In 25 years of driving vehicles, I have never experienced this defect or safety issue.

43 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2016

Failure of the steering column flexible coupling. - I was driving on the highway when this occurred- this caused my car to lose driving control - I had knocking sound in the steering wheel and it was very difficult to control the driving. The part is a small rubber coupling that is located inside of the power steering assist motor. The part appears to be the manufacturer default (it was made of soft rubber) - Hyundai has developed a new replacement part that is made of a harder rubber the new part # 56315-2k000-fff. Everyone that has a Hyundai Sonata 2011 should have this flexible coupling replaced to prevent losing control of the automobile. At a minimum car owner should be notified of the possibility of this happening when driving. This does not appear to be in normal routine maintenance issue.

46 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2016

There is a clicking and ratteling in the steering column when turning (or when going over a bump). And there is a slight grip or pull from the column onto the steering wheel at certain degrees of its rotation. Definitely a potential safety issue. I believe it originates with the steering coupler. Online search reveals this is a widespread issue with the model, however there has been no recall.

47 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2016

Steering wheel makes loud clicking sounds when turned or when the vehicle goes over a bump or down a hill. I took the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership for service today and was told that this is a common problem with the mechanics of the steering column.

Upon retrieving the vehicle from the dealer, a clicking sound was heard coming from the steering column and underneath the vehicle. The dealer informed the contact of a recall for the steering coupler, but the vehicle was over the mileage and could not be repaired per the manufacturer recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and reffered the contact to Hyundai awards to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the manufacturer inquired of an estimate of the repairs. The steering column coupler is clanking and needs to be replaced per Hyundai dealer's service department.

50 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

The steering column seems loose and every time I run over a bump whether small or big there is a rattle that seems to come from the steering column section. And it seems to be getting worse. It is actually described in a recall from 10/2010. Something is loose in there. I have seen that it's more recent to in the complaints. Can the closed recall be reopened?.

52 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2016

My 2011 Hyundai Sonata recently began having play in the steering column. It has 91,853 miles on it now but started about 1,500 miles ago. When you turn the steering wheel there is movement before the actual wheel assembly is engaged. I am concerned that it may get worse or even fail. Although there are recalls for this model car my VIN is not included at this time.

53 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2016

Recently took the vehicle in for a recall on the power steering system and at the same time said the presenting problem with steering was a clicking in the steering column when turned a few degrees left or right from center. They noted this was the steering coupler covered under a TSB 14-st-002-1. The service manager had drawer with a number of worn out rubber steering couplers that he noted was a very common problem and was potentially dangerous. He noted Hyundai had changed to an abs part for replacement. Based on the flawed design, it appears there would be close to a 100% failure rate at some point on the part.

54 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2016

There is a clunking sound in steering column when turning the wheel while stationary and in motion. Also, there is a loud rattling sound in the steering column when going over any bumps at any speed, which has progressively worsened to the point where it sounds as if the steering column is going to disconnect. I was afraid to drive the car for fear of losing control of steering. The dealership said it was the coupler, which is an issue they have been repairing a lot. The part cost $3, but the process is labor intensive, so the total bill was over $300.

56 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2016

I purchased a pre-owned 2011 Sonata in oct 2013. In September of 2016 the steering wheel at times would be hard to steer. Then around October of 2016 my steering wheel started making a clicking sound when turning the wheel and the esc light remained illuminated even when I depressed the button numerous times . When I went to a local mechanic to find out what the problem was, I was told it was the steering column and that I would need to take it to Hyundai to fix it because the steering would have to be reprogrammed. I called and was surprised to learn that it was not covered under warranty. I had to shell out $1100 just to have it repaired.

57 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2016

I took my vehicle in for a recall in the power steering. A few days later, there was a clunking sound when I turned my steering wheel when car was not inmotion. On the freeway, when exceeding speed of 65mph, my steering wheel violently shook and felt like I was loosing control of the car. Took it back to Hyundai and they said this was not because of the recall work they did and a coincidence. I strongly disagree! they charged me $500. 00 to replace the steering column/coupler.

58 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2016

My driver side tail light fell out of the casing, driving down the highway during the summer of 2015. Luckily, the wires kept it holding on or it would have flown into traffic. Now, a bit over a year later, in September of 2016, and out of warranty, the passenger side has done the same thing. The dealership refuses to do anything since I am out of warranty. According to Hyundai forums, there are a lot of cars that are having this issue. . Read more...

59 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2016

I noticed a clunking sound when turing the steering wheel. After researching this problem I found this to be common complaint due to power steering coupling going bad, Sonata has a TSB 14-st-002-1 regarding this problem. The TSB says there is no steering performance issues associated with this condition. I strongly disagree with this statement. The degraded coupler introduced play or wiggle room in the connection between the steering wheel and the front tires. When the car is parked, you can rock the steering wheel back & forth to hear the clunking noise. When this is done, you can tell the steering wheel was moving further than it should without the wheels moving. Also you hear and feel the clunking sound at low speeds turning the steering wheel back and forth. You can feel loose playing in the steering wheel before the tires move in either direction. I believe this issue is very much a safety concern and should be a recall. Also I feel this should have been part of the safety recall for the column shaft ecu replacement since it is a safety concern issue with the steering system.

60 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2016

I purchased my Hyundai Sonata on 12/31/2010. It has 39,000 miles on it now. Hendrick Hyundai of charleston SC has informed me the steering column coupler needs to be replaced and has quoted me a repair cost of $243. I declined their offer of repair, but have become concerned as the steering has begun to exhibit an increasingly loose feeling. Following my inquiry to consumer affairs at Hyundai motor America, I have been informed this would have been covered under their 5 year 60,000 miles warranty, but since my vehicle is beyond the 5 year period, the warranty does not apply. As a result of my internet search, I have found this part was part of a recall for VIN numbers not including mine, and that there have been numerous complaints filed with NHTSA about this issue. I suspect the fault with the part failure lies with Hyundai, and I resent having to pay for the repair, which I now intend to have the dealer perform because I am concerned about the safety risk. . I further resent that Hyundai has not been more pro-active about a repair issue that I suspect could be life-threatening should steering be lost at highway speed, resulting in a crash.

61 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2016

The steering column makes a rattling noise when car is in motion making turns/bumps in road. I feel this is a safety issue/defect that Hyundai should correct at their expense. I have heard of this becoming a major issue with this model. I do not feel this is something to be taken lightly as this is not something that would be considered normal wear. Hyundai is aware of the problem but is not willing to correct this defected part.

62 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 35 mph, the steering column rattled and shook forcefully. The contact also stated that the function buttons on the steering wheel were inoperable. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing the same failure as described in NHTSA campaign number: 10v426000 (steering). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not repaired. The failure mileage was 70,000.

63 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2016

Recently I noticed the steering in my 2011 Hyundai Sonata had developed quite a bit of "play" in it. When taking my Sonata in for an unrelated recall I asked the service advisor about it. He said they would check it out. After doing so he informed me that a plastic coupler in the steering column was worn and would need to be replaced. The car only had 40,000 miles on it at that point. I was surprised that a car with that low mileage would need such an important part that could prove to cause loss of steering if it broke. The service advisor said they were "seeing a lot of these come in for repair and was surprised they haven't issued a recall on them". I agree. I believe a car with 40k miles should not be having such problems, especially with safety related equipment. More importantly, I am fearful for the countless folks out there who may not be aware they have a potential problem with their steering, a problem that could cause a fatal crash. This problem needs to be addressed. Thank you.

64 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2016

My steering column started clicking and getting more and more play in it. I took it to Hyundai and they already knew what was wrong with it but my car was not on the recall list-same problem as the cars that are on the list except I have to pay-put my car on that list and give my money back. Please this is a dangerous situation.

65 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

The steering column is rattling and shaking when braking and or reaching a speed of 60. It is causing the balancing of tires worn, and the air bag light has come on and tire pressure light.

66 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2016

Every time I go over a bump in the road even a bump so small most people dont even feel, a rattle comes from the steering column. While in the shop for multiple other recalls I ask them to look at this and he tells me the sterring coupler has been a major issue and probably needs to be replaced but I would need to pay to have it checked. This same issue has occurred on many other 2011 through 2014 Sonatas. It is going to cost over $300 to get it fixed. Given the many issues with this part, it appears to be one of the recalls. I love my car but this is starting to be a bit much seeing how I only have 67,000 miles on the car. Ready to sale it and get something else if Hyundai cant provide a safe and decent care for me and my family!.

67 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2016

While driving my wife's Sonata, I felt a distinct "clunk" in the steering column while moving the steering wheel left and right. This occurs when stopped as well as when the vehicle is in motion. I am confident that this is a very serious safety issue that deserves an immediate safety recall response. It is also my understanding that this specific steering complaint (coupler failure) has been reported by numerous Sonata owners with no remedy issued by NHTSA. Why is that? does someone have to lose control of their vehicle and parish, before action is taken? please help. . . Tombstone justice is not the answer!!!.

68 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving various speeds over a bump in the road, the steering column rattled. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously serviced per NHTSA campaign number: 16v190000 (steering), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the steering had not improved before the recall repair was performed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,200.
