Steering Noise problems of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata - part 1

Steering wheel makes noise and has play in it. While jacked up, the wheel makes the suspension shake. Noise is while hitting potholes, making turns and while sitting still turning the wheels. I bought car used. Had regular maintenance and tires just rotated within past month.

Steering wheel makes a noise. When turned. Car ride is bumpy on inspection mechanic said I need steering column replaced and I need left front lower control arm replaced, front sway bar links need replacement. Almost $2000 expense. This car has 132000 miles on it . I took care of car rotate the tires did preventive maintenance. The vehicle has very bumpy ride when turned makes noise.

The steering wheel has been making this vibrating noise especially when you get up to a speed of 70. It shakes violently and there is always a clicking noise when you turn the steering wheel. It almost feels like the steering wheel is going to come off. If there is a bump or pothole in the road it will shake and just continue shaking violently in your hands. This is a common problem and Hyundai wants to charge around $400 to replace a rubber piece in the steering wheel.

Should I just go to any auto repair. But after seeing complaints about same issue I'm worried. I din't know what you do but I need advice. Can you check up about these complains and what could be causing this and what needs replacement, so I know if it is a danger. When I hit any bumps while driving my Sonata, there is a loud rattling noise coming from the steering wheel/column. I noticed quite a bit of play and a clicking noise in the steering of my son's car. Upon taking it to my wonderful mechanic, learned he's seen at least 4 Hyundai Sonatas in the past month with the same issue. He said he believed it was a recall so I should take it to the dealer. When talking to the service manager at the dealership, he was almost certain of the problem as he's seen more of the same than my mechanic. He said it's not a recall and I was misinformed (but kudos to my honest and forthright mechanic for not being greedy). The problem, both of them told me, a wearing of the pictured rubber gear deep inside the steering column. My mechanic showed meld the old and new parts noting if this had been left and continue to wear, the steering wheel would have turned but the tires would not have! I am sickened this recall has not come to fruition. Hyundai needs to expedite the issue of a recall before more people are injured and/or killed.

He said when driving the car into the maintenance garage, he heard the steering coupler making noise, checked it, and found that it was faulty and was a safety hazard. The car has 66,000 miles on it and is driven mostly at low speeds in city traffic. In view of the driving conditions and limited mileage, I wonder if the failure of the steering coupler suggests a design flaw.

What I thought was just normal 'sound' coming from the steering wheel/column has progressed to loud noise ie turning the steering wheel; going over potholes/bumps at various speeds, but very progressive in low speeds [city driving]. This loud noise seemed to reverberate all the way down to the driver side front suspension. It's like there's 'play' when turning the steering wheel before it engages. 'clicking' sound is very pronounced when turning the wheel from a stop or when backing up, the first time I turn the wheel. Or even if the car is stopped, turning the wheel left/right I can hear a pronounced 'clicking' sound, like something is loose in there. Is this why the car sometimes veer left?I understand there is an active recall but should more VIN be covered with this. Please help.

I unfortunatley have the sonora with the engine recall which to me is asking why Hyundai just isn't replacing engines regardless of failure? there is no resale in a car with this open recall . My other issue I need to have addressed is my steering was upgraded and approximatley a month or so after I heard a clunking noise in the driveway when I turn the steering wheel from side to side, I called my dealer ( Hyundai 112 in medford ,n. Y ) and it was almost scripted ,I was told it's a bushing or something he said and it's not part of the recall. I have to pay for this. If you check online you will see it's a major failure ,why it would be such a flimsy plastic gear in steering ? I hope you can remedy this as a recall. My car had no noise until the steering was quote upgraded by Hyundai , again plastic piece in a steering motor?.

The steering on my 2011 Sonata makes a popping noise when I turn the steering wheel right or left when the car is stationary. When driving it sounds like the steering wheel is going to separate from the rest of the car when I drive over any potholes, bumps, or seams in the the road. I am fearful the steering wheel will separate from the car at speed. This occurs consistently when I drive the car.
