Recently I have heard a knocking noise in the steering wheel and can feel this knocking as well. I have taken the vehicle to the closet Hyundai dealer for looking at and repair, they describe it as the steering coupler that needed to be replace and was very costly for repair. This noise and feeling appears below 5 mph and when the steering wheel is being turned left or right.
Clicking noise coming from the steering wheel when turned right or left. The noise also happens when hitting a rough spot or bump. I have researched this problem and found that this problem is affecting a large number of owners. Hyundai has failed to issue any remedy for the complaints.

Steering wheel clicking noise when turned. Was told by dealership it would become dangerous to steer as the part ( a rubber part the size of a 50 cent coin ) deteriorated. The part replaced was 1-56315-2k000-fff- flexible coupling. It cost around $300. 00 to replace a $2. 52 part, that is considered as a safety issue. There has been no recall yet, but the dealership says they have had to replace many of these parts.
Steering wheel has begun to shake violently when driving and makes a knocking/popping noise when the steering wheel is turned left or right. Even when the vehicle is stationary, you can turn the wheel and hear and feel the popping. I see this has been an ongoing issue with this model but I am guessing my car was not involved in the recall. Maybe the recall needs to extend further than initially thought.

I took my car into the dealership over a month ago because of noises coming from the steering wheel. I knew that they had recalls before on steering but they told me that my issue was not covered under the recall. The issue is a steering coupler involving the steering column. They also have a new recall announcement made on April 16, 2016. There have been many complaints with the same steering issues with this vehicle and Hyundai expects money out of pocket for it. Now when driving, the steering has gotten worse with increased speeds there is shaking and clicking. Any little bump in the road will cause clicking in the steering wheel. Even sitting still, it will click once you turn the wheel. I was told that this is a dangerous hazard but I cannot afford to get this fixed when obviously this is an ongoing issue with Hyundai and their recalls.

The contact was unable to determine when the vehicle would be repaired as the noise from the area of the steering wheel continued. The contact was to check with the manufacturer to determine the guidelines for the dealer to repair the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 136,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
While my car is in motion there is a loud knocking noise coming from my steering column and the steering wheel will also shake.
"takata recall" "takata recall" clucking noise in steering wheel. Bad coupler wearing out . This is definetly a safety hazard. Part that was put in when they made the car is very bad. May lose control of steering . This should be recalled. Steering feels very loose.
After taking my 2011 Hyundai Sonata in for engine recall my steering wheel is now making noise and it moves to the left on its own now. Also my right axle is leaking grease and the car has about 69,000 miles on it. I bought it new. Hyundai dealer said the noise is coming from a coupling and would cost 270. 00. They also said it was not part of the recall for steering column intermediate shaft which I took the car in for when that recall came out. I dont know what they do or if they do anything when they supposedly look at your car due to a recall. My car was doing great when I took it in for the recalls until the last time. Also when I took my car in for engine recall my oil dipstick was yellow. But now I have an orange oil dipstick. Back to the part about the steering noise it makes noise sitting still and moving and sometimes it gets louder if the road is not as smooth. Also how do they know it is the coupling and not something else such as what the recall was for when they just listened to my car and not inspect it to be sure. The coupling should have been included in the recall and if not it needs to be recalled. This sounds dangerous. The noise also gets louder when I turn the wheel while driving. Sometimes it sound like the car is rattling and sometimes sounds like a shock absorber starting to go bad.
Clicking in steering wheel. Shakes violently at 60 mph. Noise comes from the steering wheel when u hit a bump. Dealer knew exactly the problem and the cost before I could even explain. Evidently, this is a known issue with Hyundai that need to be fixed for free and not $350 later.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 183,884.
There is a load rattle noise from the steering column at any speed while driving over rough roads or turning the steering wheel right and left. I took it to my regular maintenance facility to have them see what he problem was. They informed me that Hyundai has a technical service bulletin which verifies the issue. This bulletin describes the procedure to replace the worm shaft flexible coupling in the motor driven power steering (mdps) steering column to address this condition. . Read more...
Car makes a loud clicking noise in the steering column when going over 60 mph and when slowing down. When parked, there is also clicking noises when turning the steering wheel. When in reverse, it makes a clicking noise when turning. Gas gauge doesn't work. It now will run out of gas when there are "60 miles" left until empty. The cruise control button will not work. You have to keep pressing it to come on. Also, the button to see trip miles, trip a, trip b etc, does not work on the 1st try. It takes many pushes to get the screen to change.
Took car in for engine recall and explained I was also getting a clicking noise in steering column and while turning. I was informed it was the steering wheel coupler at the cost of $10 while the whole repair cost me $200 because he cut me a break! I explained I had been complaining about this for awhile prior to the start of the clicking noise. I was informed at that time that it was normal, no problem with the steering. I explained this to the service rep and was told since we just took over a month ago they can only address what they diagnosed! my car was bought brand new has 46953 miles, I was 6months 9 days out of time warranty. Totally ridiculous and on top of it I still have the clicking noise!.

Having severe shaking feedback in the steering wheel column, when driving the car when hitting bumps. Additionally, steering wheel has a loud clanking noise when turning the steering wheel at a stop and at while driving. Dealership told me it was the steering coupler which was made of plastic, and said there is a severe national shortage of these parts. Made 2 appointments to replace, both times part was said not be in stock even though they called me and said it was in for my repair. Severe feedback getting worse quickly, also worry about related damage it is causing with the defective coupler being bad. I work as a aviation safety inspector, and have a solid background in mechanical issues.

Beginning August 31st, 2015 my 2011 Hyundai Sonata's steering wheel started making a clicking noise whenever it drove over any large bumpy areas in the road, no matter the speed driven over the bumps. Over the next week the steering wheel itself has started to feel like it is loosening and now makes the clicking noise whenever steering wheel is turned at all. Very little movement from the steering wheel causes a clicking noise now and there is significant movement in the wheel from the column, even when not in motion. The steering itself seems to be affected now as well, as it takes more maneuvering from the wheel by me to drive in normal conditions. From what I have read online and from the recall on some 2011 Sonata's this issue can become very dangerous and life threatening. I looked up the VIN to my vehicle and according to NHTSA and Hyundai. Com my vehicle is not covered under this recall, even though the issues are exactly the same as what the recall covers.
When turning the steering wheel left to right, an audible mechanical clanking noise is heard in the steering column system. Additionally, you can feel feedback in the steering wheel when the clanking noise is occurring. This defect is best found when turning the steering wheel quickly to the left and then to the right, or vice versa. Took car to firestone today to find problem, and was told it was the "steering column intermediate shaft. " this part is a recall item listed for this year/make/model. However, my VIN doesn't qualify as part of this recall. Obviously this defect is wider spread than currently listed, and definitely needs to include my VIN car. Note: I work as an aviation safety inspector for the faa (fg-1825-13), so I work in the same job position but for airplanes instead. Thankfully with my mechanical background, I was able to figure out there was a safety issue before a possible accident and loss of control occurred.
