36 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2016

There is a major safety issue with my Sonata's steering. I have read a ton of complaints on the same part failure, but am unable to locate a recall for the rubber coupler that connects the electronic power steering to the actual steering column. I started hearing a clicking noise in my steering wheel when the wheel was turned in either direction from center. It did not make a difference if the car was moving or at stop. The noise continued getting worse over a 3 month time frame and is now more of a thud noise. The noise itself is not the safety problem, only a side effect. The safety issue is that the same part that is failing causing the noise has now started to cause the steering wheel to violently shake back and forth anytime the car goes faster than 55-60mph. How can someone maintain control of the vehicle when the steering wheel is shaking so badly, and how exactly is this not a safety issue? it is scary to drive to say the least, but I have to drive 80 miles round trip daily for work. My arms are almost numb by the time I make it to work or back home from being shaking almost the entire way. It is not like I can drive the car slow enough on the freeways here in the dfw area, that would be a hole other safety topic. I guess I'm going to have to fork out the $3-400 to fix it. Why can't NHTSA just add this part to the eps recall #143 that covers the eps control unit? if the dealer has to take it a part to replace the eps control unit, why would they not install a new coupler? its, funny though, you know Hyundai is aware of the issue, they changed the design of the coupler from a rubber one to a metal one on the newer models, but have yet to do anything about their poor design or earlier model years. There have been several recalls for additional items on this car that were not as severe as this issue is, so I¿m hopping NHTSA issue the recall.

37 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2016

The steering wheel shakes and vibrates badly and loudly whenever applying pressure to brakes, especially if you are slowing down from going 50 mph+. The steering column also clicks and has a lot of give whenever turning. Hyundai mechanic says reason is the steering coupler is loose and needs to be replaced. I have read numerous forums and discussion boards, and thousands of people are having this issue, and it needs to be addressed. I bought my car brand-new and have less than 60,000 miles on it. Apparently this issue is not related to the 2010-2011 investigation where the steering column was becoming separated and causing the same issue. Those cars were recalled and fixed. To fix this problem costs around $320 due to the mechanics having to remove the steering column. No recall as of yet covers this issue. Mechanic also warned that if it is not fixed, the steering column can become loose and in extreme cases, come off. This is a serious problem with this model and needs to be investigated.

39 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

My steering column has began to rattle and come loose affecting the steering of the vehicle, a noticeable clunk and play is felt in the steering wheel and vibrates bad over bumps causing the car to jerk. The dealership immediately knew what I was talking about but stated there was no recall. I find this troubling being that they didn't even need to look at the car to know exactly what is wrong and told me continued driving will result in an accident. Symptoms started early 2016 car only has 70k miles.

40 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2015

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with approximately 65,000 miles. In 2015 the steering wheel locked twice while on but parked. The esc and power steering indicators were on. After a while the issues spontaneously resolved in these instances and the vehicle able to be driven. In October 2015 the power steering locked up while driving the vehicle on a city street (speed <40mph). I was unable to turn the steering wheel and navigate resulting in several near misses with street parked vehicles before being able to stop the vehicle. Car towed to the dealership where they stated that they drove the vehicle around and "recalibrated it. " two months later while again traveling on city streets (<40mph) the steering wheel began to shake violently and I was unable to steer, again almost resulting in a significant crash. During this incident the same ecs and power steering indicators lit up. Unable to steer I was forced to stop and turn off my vehicle in the middle of a busy road. However, once the vehicle was turned off the steering wheel continued to shake violently until someone who came to assist me shut off the car battery. The car was towed to the dealership where upon showing them video the service manager stated he had never seen this occur in his 20 years of employment. The car is scheduled to be assessed on Monday. Internet searches show other videos of this make/model with the same violently shaking wheel and reports of accident close-calls. My specific car was part of an earlier recall (campaign 097) related to power steering that was reportedly fixed at that time, therefore this car clearly has known problems in this domain. I will never get back in this vehicle and will likely lose money on a trade in. There are clearly significant safety issues with this vehicle that have not been resolved by the earlier recall. . 41 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2015

I have a Hyundai Sonata 2011 with ~ 70,000 miles on it. For more than a year, I started hearing obnoxious noise coming from the steering wheel when I drive on rough roads or take an exit on a freeway. The steering wheel will start vibrating and becoming harder to control. I voiced the concern to two Hyundai dealers (one in mi and another in CA) and told them I was worried about my safety and that riding in the car, but nothing was brought up about steering coupling, which as you will see turned out to be the problem. The problem continued worsening, until most recently I could hear obnoxious knocking noise by turning the steering wheel left and right, and on the freeway and rough roads, the steering wheel would vibrate and shake, and I could feel "looseness' when bypassing cars and exiting freeway. Worried about my safety, I took my car to a dealer and asked it to be fixed. For the first time, a Hyundai dealer recognized the problem to be the coupling. They fixed the car with $320, mostly labor with the part is less than $50 dollar (most other Hyundai dealers didn't want to do it for less than $380). The car has been fixed, and as of two days after the visit to the dealer, I no longer hear noise, and the car feels much safer to drive. This is a Hyundai problem and it is dangerous to the safety of people in the car and on the road. My dealer told me to keep the receipt in case a recall is issued. Seeing what turn my car took as a result of this problem, I strongly believe a recall is urgent. I hope NHTSA is listening, for the manufacturer is not.

45 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2015

My steering column has began to rattle and shake affecting the steering of the vehicle, it is especially worsened in the steering wheel and vibrates dramatically over bumps and when braking which is very scary. I've gotten at least 4 recalls on this vehicle since I purchased it and when I asked about this particular issue the dealership immediately knew what I was talking about but stated there was no recall. Instead, they informed me that the services would be roughly around $250 to replace a $2 rubber coupler. I find this very disturbing as this is a known issue and the company will not fix it, instead I was told that continued driving will result in an accident which forces me to either pay for the repair or try to fix this myself. The symptoms started late 2015 and my vehicle only has 80k miles. If this is a defect caused by Hyundai. . . Then it should be replaced by Hyundai. Placing a known defective part on your vehicles and leaving the expense on your consumer is unacceptable. Especially when its a safety hazard not only to the driver but anyone else on the road.

46 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

Steering wheel/column stated making a clicking noise about 6 months ago. At first it wasn't that bad; now everytime you move the steering wheel a clicking noise is made. Every bump or rut you hit in the road makes it rattle. Sounding as if it is getting ready to break. . I have taken it to the Hyundai place several times and reported this problem. Hyundai keeps telling me that this is not a recall. It will cost me $250. 00 to $300. 00 to have this repaired. My question still remains that if this steering coupling is defected and it is controlling the steering of the car then why if is not a recall? my steering wheel vibrates, shakes, and makes an awful racket. I do not understand how this is not considered a recall.

My car's steering wheel was making clicking nose. It probably started some time last year, but I didn't think much of it b/c sound was very faint. But now, the noise is pretty loud and that it's affecting the car's driving performance. The steering wheel shakes when I drive over a certain speed limit; makes noise whenever I turn, go over a bump, or whenever I turn the steering wheel even when it's stationary. . I brought it to the dealer and dealer said that the steering coupler needs to be replaced. This is a poor design and, more importantly, a safety issue that Hyundai needs to address with a recall ASAP before someone gets hurt!.

I was hearing a clunking sound and my steering wheel was shaking alot. I took the vehicle straight to my mechanic and he said that my intermediate shaft is bad and that it is dangerous . He said the connection could break and I could lose the ability to steer the vehicle. I called Hyundai and they said there were recalls on the 2011, but my VIN # is not one of the cars. My VIN# may not be one of the cars in the batch recalled but I have this problem with my car. Why should I have to repair a safety issue that Hyundai should be held responsible for?.

64 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2015

I have noticed a gradually worsening rattling noise while driving. The noise is coming from the steering column, and the steering wheel vibrates intermittently. It happens on the freeway when driving 75mph and it happens on surface streets driving the posted speed limit. The noise also happens when the car is idle and you move the steering wheel in either direction. The steering wheel acts as if it is catching on something. This seems to be a common issue that is reported on Hyundai sites, but it has not been reported on this site. Please look into this and see if it is a safety issue that merits a recall.

67 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2015

Hyundai need to recall the steering column I spoke with a employee at Hyundai and they explained this is a cheap part Hyundai knows is tearing up and it makes steering wheel shake uncontrollably at 45 plus miles per hour. And it is causing other issues. Hyundai said part cost like 10. 00 but we have to pay $400 to have part changed. And at the time I was speaking to a employee he informed me he was putting one on at that present moment. Certain models are not covered and thus isn't fair if this happens to all Hyundai Sonatas.

69 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2014

Driving on a busy street, turned down a residential street and the steering wheel started shaking violently. We have own the car since June, 2013 and this has been an ongoing problem. The will be a beep ,then the eps and traction control will show on the dash board and then the steering wheel will start to shake violently. My husband shut off the vehicle and it violently shake for 20 mins. At times when this problem occurred in the past the car would be on but we did not even leave the drive way. The firs time it did it me was 4 months after purchasing the vehicle and I had my child in the back seat taking her to school when the steering wheel started shaking violently, I was in the middle of a busy intersection and I couldnt get out because I was not strong enough to handle the steering wheel, and we almost got hit. Each time (more than 5 times now) we were either stopped or going less than 25 miles per hour, the eps and traction will light, and the steering wheel will shake violently anywhere from 5 minutes to 45 minutes. There was a time when my husband was driving in our small town when the eps light was on but my husband had no power steering. The steering wheel didnt shake.

70 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

I believe my problem started since I purchased the car in Aug-2010. On the third day of purchase I returned to the dealer cause I noticed that on the freeway it lend to the right, nothing was done. This continued for severe months along with different exam & testing nothing ever conform a problem. About July of 2014 driving 80mph (to avoid being hit) I noticed steering wheel vibrated violently, since I had never driven over 75mph this problem was unknown to me. I thought it was the road or the sudden acceleration. Recently on April 27,2015 driving to work I noticed that no matter what speed over 50mph I was going, it cause the steering wheel to shake violently like if I have a flat. When car was checked I was told that the issue is in the steering column something bent/cracked. My car was manufacture on July 2, 2010 in alabama, a friend told me about a recall on 2011 Sonata's. But when I called dealer I was told my car was not one of the recall ones. I don't understand how or who decides which car should be on the list, if a problem occurs in a specific time period shouldn't all vehicles be given the same importance. Safety should always be first before $$ doesn't hydundai know that this is how you keep families coming back. I had planned to purchase one for my daughter who is graduating in June but will have to rethink that . I love my car but not if safety is a issue, hydundai really needs to re-look at this problem!.
