37 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/13/2013

The rear calipers mounting bracket is holding the brakes way to tightly to the rotors so they are constintly being applied. The only way to prevent this from happening is to manually grind down the sides of the brakes to make them fit properly. I found this out when I changed my brakes before a long car ride (approx 4 hours). The brakes were holding the car back and throwing off my alignment. Bought vehicle with 49000 miles with new brakes. Replaced them at 68200. Currently has 69200 and I have to replace the brakes again becuase the hot friction completly ruined the brakes. My wife is pregnant and I do not feel safe knowing my brakes might burn out at some point and fail.

38 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/12/2013

Rear brake calipers are locking up causing premature excessive wear of the rear brakes. This is undetectable in the drivability of the car until the break pads are worn so low that they make noise.

39 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/02/2013

Defective rear brakes. One rear brake pad was down to metal. Grinding and smoking. Pads and rotors were replaced by Hyundai dealer. Now at 38,000 miles car is in local shop for same work. One of three pads are down to metal. Diagnosed as defective brake caliper. Claim will be made to Hyundai but many others have been denied per internet and n. Y. Class action lawsuit. This is considered to be a possible safety issue.

40 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/16/2013

Heard squealing and howling from the rear driver side. Took to dealership and was told that the brakes hung up and I needed to replace brakes and rotor ($189. 00). I was told that this is a maintenance issue and nothing was covered under warranty. I purchased the items and when they were going to be replaced we discovered the dust boot was pulled out of the caliper (which would have been covered under warranty) I contacted the dealer and was told that every 7000 miles the calipers would need rebuilt. I've been driving and grew up around garages and never heard of such a thing!.

41 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/05/2013

Back rear brake sounded like it was grinding and brake pedal very soft. Took for repair while out of state. They replace all 4 break pads and rotors. Next day I went back and complained that I smelled a burning smell and was told that was normal. On July 8 heard grinding sound which was severe on right rear brake. Repair shop owner said the caliper right rear seized and destroyed brakes. All rotors and pads on rear needed to be replaced. The repair shop showed me the pad and rotor from the right rear brake and I saw that there was nothing left of a pad and could plainly see how the meal on both the pad and rotor were ground. I believe that I previously had the brakes repaired but can't remember the specifics.

42 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/08/2013

This is an addition to NHTSA complaint number 10522412: after the crash when the vehicle was inspected to see why the brakes completely failed, we received documentation from a vehicle maintenance garage noting they found significant rust on the brake components (calipers maybe). The vehicle was rented in south dakota where they use significant salt on the roads. While not all complaints noting spongy brakes that then go all the way to the floor without engaging have been reported to NHTSA, there are numerous complaints about this problem on Hyundai Sonata blogs.

43 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/09/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, she applied the brakes but the vehicle did not decelerate. Teh contact applied extreme force to the brakes and the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard before the vehicle began to decelerate. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the calipers and brakes would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 90,000.

44 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/13/2013

Caliper right rear seized and destroyed brakes. All rotors and pads needed to be replaced, front and rear due to premature wear. All tires worn as well and need replacement. Mechanic said caliper should not have done this at this mileage. Common issue reading online reports and a class action suit in NY has been filed. Safety issue.

45 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/08/2013

The brake does not release. As you drive the brake smokes and rubs causing you to step harder on the gas to move forward. Eventually you hear the brake release and it drives normally. I had a new caliper , rotor and brake pad put on 2 weeks ago for the same issue.

46 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/26/2012

Heard noise from brakes and thought it was front pads. Changed front pads but it did not solve problem. Took back tires off to check brakes and much to my surprise there was hardly any pads left. Changed pads and that stopped the noise only to have to bring my car in for service do to the fact that the calipers were not releasing. They kept the car for 2 days and said that calipers were bad. They had to put new brakes on(mine were only on a week) turn the rotors and said my brake fluid was contaminated. 10 yr 100000 mile warranty plus bought extended warranty and I still had to pay for something they call normal wear. Nothing normal about that!also wanted to drain old brake fluid and charge 129. 99 for something they had to do when they put new calipers on any way by bleeding the lines. Then to charge 110. 00 to turn the rotors. I argued and everyone I talked to said this is guide lines we have to follow. I cant believe there is not a recall on this . I am not the only one that has complained about back brakes causing problems on Sonatas. They do not cover parts from normal wear if calipers didnt malfunction I wouldnt have had to have anything done to my car. They deny, deny, deny until someone gets killed. Could be another Toyota ordeal!.

47 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/22/2012

The following is an email that I sent to the service department I recently went to for recurring brake/caliper issues on this vehicle. As you know I was in yesterday (buerkle Hyundai white bear lake, mn @ 8:48 am invoice 183543) with my 2008 Hyundai Sonata with left rear brake issues. It seemed like the left rear caliper may be sticking. As I explained when the car was dropped off yesterday (2/5/13), we had just replaced both rear brake pads and rotors and the car only had 29,975 miles when the brakes and rotors were replaced on 12/22/2012. I brought in the previous brake pads and rotor for your inspection from the rear drivers side of the vehicle. The side that is currently having issues. It clearly showed the brake pads were completely gone and the rotor was scraped and ruined. This was shown to the service advisor helping me, brian coyle. I have attached, just a few out of several, websites for your review to show this is a known problem that has received many consumer complaints. . Read more...

48 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

The drivers side rear brakes are buring through brake pads. The calipers are working smoothly but for unknown reason they are sticking. The front bakes are fine but the rear set has gone through 2 sets of brake pads in less than 10,000 miles.

49 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/25/2012

I had had my rear brakes and rotars replaces in February 2012 at around 60k miles. In October 2012 again my car felt like it was dragging and I heard the tell tale squealing of the brakes so I took it back to the repair shop to be told my rear brakes and rotars again were worn out and chewed through, and no that my calipers had seized and I would need to pay yet again to have this issue repaired. The mechanic made a comment that the only time he'd ever seen this before was from young people doing "power slides" on their cars, something I would never do (I am 28 years old). Upon research I find this is a well documented problem when searching online for break problems with this car for model years 2006-2010, enough that there is even a class action lawsuit in new york. Hyundai needs to recall and repair these vehicles as well as reimburse for the expense of fixing these up until they issue the recall.

50 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/06/2012

My rear brake calipers were frozen/ corroded into the pads. The rear brakes were inoperable. This could have effected the ability of the car to stop effectively. The dealer said they would not replace unless the caliper was leaking. It was corroded at only 39,000 miles and 3yrs after bought.

51 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Premature wear and replacement was required due to a defect involving the brakes and calipers which may involve defective parts and/or premature corrosion. Brakes and calipers replaced twice in two year period. Rear brake calipers would periodically stick and grind causing brakes to smoke and give off burning smell. Car at times was unsafe to drive due to these problems.

52 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Right rear brake makes pulsating rattle sound. Seems to happen more after several miles of driving in warm, dry weather. Technicians can't find permanent cure but it did go away for awhile after the rotor was resurfaced. However, the noise has returned. This is the same wheel on which several thousand miles ago the caliper seized causing me to have to replace the entire brake on that wheel. The rattling sound has been going on for a long time, and the mileage I entered for this complaint is a sheer guess.

53 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/03/2012

In regards to my vehicles rear disc brakes. From my experience and education it is very unusual for your rear brake pads to wear out before the front do. Do to weight and inertial pushing harder on the front brakes ( this vehicle is much more heavier in the front than the back). My rear pads wore out before and from some research in forums on my model car others have had same experience. I believe there is a defect here and it might involve the proportioning valve sending too much pressure to the rear calipers in comparison to the front calipers. Might of be an adjustment in the valve that is causing issue. I would like an investigation into issue . I can provide assistance if needed in regards to vehicle as subject for testing. 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4-cyl automatic trans ,disc pads front and back.

54 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/01/2012

Rear brakes are worn out at 19,7000 miles the calipers are worn out and my front brakes are perfect. . Front brakes usually wear out before rear brakes what is going on. . . This should never happen giving us low gas mileage these faulty calipers Hyundai should pay this could result in a crash due to a faulty brake system.

55 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact heard a grinding noise emitting from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician diagnosed that the brake calipers were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where the brake calipers were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 20,000.

56 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/11/2012

I had to replace the rear brake pads on my 2010 Sonata at 16,794 miles on both sides. I had to replace the rear pads and rotors on both sides at 23,156 miles. I had to replace the right rear brake line, pad, rotor and caliper at 25,854 miles. There has been no issues on front brakes, however, I have had to service my rear brakes 3 times. I bought this vehicle brand new from my local Hyundai dealer and it had 4 miles on it. I have spent $768. 80 on my rear brakes since I have bought this vehicle in February of 2010. There is clearly a problem with the brake components on this car. The rear brakes should not wear out before the front bakes, and especially a vehicle that has 16,000 miles on it.

57 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/02/2012

The right rear brake pad was worn down paper thin while the other rear pads were only 30% worn. Upon further inspection, I found the pad was stuck to the pad mount/anchor. It was so stuck I had to remove the whole caliper and hammer the old pad out. When I explained my situation to the dealer, they said it was a common problem and that I should bring my car in every 15000 miles to inspect and lube my brakes. I explained to them that the owner's manual says nothing about disassembling and re-lubing my brakes every 15000 miles. I also commented on how unrealistic it is for every Sonata to need a brake lube every 15000 miles. The service representative blew off my concerns. I'm sure the dealership would love to sell everyone a brake lube every 15000 miles, but that's ridiculous, especially for a safety item such as brakes. This safety issue needs to be addressed.

58 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/21/2011

Rear brakes: rubbing, grinding, premature wear and reduced breaking effectiveness. Replacement of rear rotors and pads were required replacement to pass safety inspection. Dealer informed me that the calipers were not siezed or sticking but that dried out lubrication on slides, pins, shims was the cause of the wear.

59 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/17/2011

My 2009 Sonata has 44000 miles and the rear brakes are grinding. They need to be replaced but the front brakes look brand new. I have been working on cars for over 40 years and have never seen or heard of anything like this before. Rear brakes just don't wear out faster than the front ones. I have an appointment tommorow at the dealer but they told me it is not a covered item but a wear item. There is a problem with the calipers sticking and causing the brakes to wear out. Routine maintainance would have taken care of the problem. What routine are they talking about? it is not on the recommended list at any mileage in my owners manual. Thanks god it is only something like brakes and not something important like the radio going out. Sarcasm is how I deal with stress. Rjh.

60 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/04/2011

When I bought a new 2008 Hyundai Sonata, I soon experienced a squelling sound from the rear brakes. The dealership serviced the brakes. They said it was the shims causing the brakes to sieze and keep from sliding properly. Within 30,000 miles the rear brakes were worn out. I now have 54,000 miles on the car and the rear brake pads are worn out. I discovered from my mechanic that this model is known for a premature wear problem with the rear brakes. The pads seized in place unable to back off the rotor. I'm prompted to notify you due to the many postings of this issue on the internet. I'm not sure if it is a weather concern with corrosion or a design flaw in the caliper.

61 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/24/2011

Brake caliper failure. Right rear brake caliper locked up when slowing. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and determined that all of the brake calipers had significant and premature corrosion which is causing the brakes to stick and the vehicle is not safe to drive. He also suggested that the car be taken to the dealer for service because based on his research the brakes on this model vehicle were likely defective from the factory and he wouldn't be able to fix them properly using factory or aftermarket replacement parts. He speculated that since the dealers have been inundated with this problem, they may have some installation tricks using the defective Hyundai calipers. The independent mechanic then spoke with a Hyundai dealer service rep and they stated that "this is common in areas where road salt is used, even for Sonatas with lower miles and the best they could do was to clean the calipers. " I'm bringing the Sonata to the dealer on Saturday, August 27 for repair but I don't feel safe in this vehicle based on the discussion with the dealer.

62 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

I own a 2009 Hyundai Sonata limited edition. I bought it on April 8, 2010 and it had 21k at the time of purchase. On July 17, 2011, (now at 47k miles) I noticed a squealing noise coming from the tires as they went around. This noise got progressively worse over the next 3 days and I brought it in to the dealership where I purchased it. (I also purchased a great 7yr warranty which covers basically anything except for routine maintenance items. ) I dropped the car off on the evening of July 21, 2011 and the next day the dealership called me to inform me what was wrong with my car. They said the caliper slides were hanging up and it had caused all my brakes and rotors to need to be replaced. They offered to fix "my problem" for $520. I asked how this could possible be my fault, I've owned several cars and I've never once heard of lubing the caliper slides. They said that this was routine maintenance and would not be covered under my warranty, even though my warranty specifically states that it covers faulty calipers. . Read more...

63 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/06/2011

Rear brakes failed on 2009 Hyundai Sonata. . . Also had lot of noise, grinding, was able to stop car because front brakes did work. Took to garage to have pads/rotors checked told it was dealer issue car too knew/low miles. Still replaced one rotor and pad as totally gone. One tire would not rotate properly. Went to dealer - dealer finally admitted caliper defective on rear brakes - told car not driveable parts not in stock - drive car home - will call when parts in. Brakes very, very hot. Rear brake turning on and off at will.

64 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

Passenger side rear brake caliper frozen causing metal on metal cantact and premature failure and replacement of rear pads and right rear rotor. Front pads were hardly worn. Car milage at 17,000 miles with normal driving conditions.

65 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/03/2011

Right rear outer brake pad seized in the pad holder, grinding the rotor. Dealer repaired the brakes and charged me $ 400. 00 even though the vehicle was still under warranty and should have been repaired free of charge. The front pads were only 50% worn and they do most of the stopping. Now Hyundai dealer says that the Hyundai Sonata vehicle should have rear brakes cleaned and lubricated every 15,000 to 20,000 miles at my expense, to prevent "lock up". Hyundai does not mention this type of maintenance anywhere in it's maintenance schedule. After checking on the web, I find that this is a common safety problem among Hyundai owners who are being ripped off by Hyundai who refuses to repair this defect under warranty or recall the faulty brake calipers. I live in a rural area and mileage is 90% highway, so there is minimal usage of the brake compared to city dwellers, yet the brakes failed prematurely.

66 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/30/2011

I have been concerned about the rear brakes due to the numerous complaints on mycarstats. Com. Often when I get the car serviced by the dealer I have mentioned that they should check the rear brakes. This time was the 45000 mile service and I brought a printout of the 26 existing complaints. The service manager assured me that they always check and clean rear brakes, calipers, rotors, etc to prevent an early failure. Shortly after leaving the car, the service manager calls me to say that indeed the rear brake pads were worn out and needed replacing. I told him I thought that it should be under the bumper to bumper warranty because it was a known defect in these Sonatas. He said brakes only had a 1 year warranty and I would have to pay. There was no sound or warning in advance. If it wasn't for the mycarstats. Com website, I would have never known to keep asking. The front brakes are fine and have not yet been replaced. Driving is mostly highway. Is there a class action suit for this yet?.

67 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/14/2011

Premature rear brake wear at 22k on oct 2010 caused failed safety inspection at dealer. Inside rear brake pads rubbing. Replaced pads and cleaned sliders myself and passed inspection. Rear brake pads hung again on Mar 2011 causing hot wheel. I replaced the sliders with new and filed the metal tabs of pads and used anti-sieze compound to prevent sticking. If this doesn't work I'll contact Hyundai for caliper failure.

68 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/24/2011

Took car to dealer for annual state vehicle inspection and to have "chirping" noise from brakes checked. Rear brake pads were at 3/32"; min allowed is 2/32". Front pads ok at +7/32". Replaced rear pads, machined rotors. Mileage was 23,226; car purchased feb2008 and was regularly serviced at dealer. Dealer sa advised that pad wear was normal and that 'on this model the rear brakes always wear faster'. When this was disputed the sa said that corrosion on caliper did not allow pads to withdraw and that constant contact wore out the pads. When asked about warranty coverage sa said that brakes are only covered for 12 months. Subsequently noted that on side of car with sticking caliper that the paint on both steel wheels has peeled and wheels have rusted. Tires have been rotated, front-to-back, several times since new. Possible that excessive heat from dragging pads overheated wheels and damaged paint. Also possible that there was excessive heat to wheel bearings. Will have this checked at next service, or sooner. This premature rear pad wear is not normal for Hyundai. Also, presently driving a 2001 elantra that went 60k+ before needing brakes. Never owned any car that had rear brakes wear before front. The number of complaints registed indicates that this is a design/material issue that needs correcting before someone is hurt.

69 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/09/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that when the vehicle was taken to the local mechanic for routine maintenance he stated that the passenger rear calipers were stuck and unable to rotate due to corrosion causing the brake pad guide to fail. The mechanic replaced the brake pad guide. The manufacturer filed report 4243771. The failure mileage was 20,442 and the current mileage was 20,618. Updated 3/14/11 updated 04/22/11.

70 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/03/2010

2009 Hyundai Sonata rear driver side brake noise due to the "sliders" on the caliper. I took my car to the dealer (car has 35,000) to pin point noise. They told me there is uneven wear on rear break pads and that the sliders are sticking causing the pads to stay compressed to rotor. They offered to "lube" them for me and replace pads for over $200. 00. This is not normal wear and tear.
