36 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/14/2010

My 2007 Sonata had only 18,000 miles on it when the rear brakes kept squeaking & locking up. This wore the pads down and they had to be replaced. I was told this happened because the sliders were rustin up and stopped working. I argued with Hyundai that this was not normal and they said it depended on the driver. I am 65 years old had many vehicles, and have never rode the brakes, nor changed my driving habits. Now I have the problem again at 28,000 miles and my brakes are actually burning at times. The smell is terrible. I feel that this is a defect and also a safety hazard. My car bucks at times and I think that I may have to replace the rear brakes again. I am afraid to drive the car right now. I can't afford to fix the brakes again at this time. Please advise.

38 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/20/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. During brake application he would hear metal grinding coming from the rear-end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, and the technician concluded that the brake pads needed to be replaced and that the rotors needed to be shaved down to a certain degree. The current and failure mileages were 20550. Updated 12/8/09 the consumer stated she experienced premature wear on rear wheels due to a stuck caliper and corroded pins in the brake system that doesn't allow pads to move properly causing uneven wear. Updated 12/09/09.

39 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Rear brakes on 2007 Hyundai Sonata acquired high pitched squeal, odor, and wheels were too hot to the touch at 17,500 miles. Both rear wheel bolts & wheel were very hot. The tire could blow up on a highway and cause personal injury. I took it to the dealer and the dealer said to replace rear disk brakes at a cost of $275. I protested saying that at such a low mileage it should not happen and there seems to be design defect and that it should be covered under warranty but they would not budge. There seems to be defective rear brake mechanisms causing the pads to freeze against the rotors. I got pads replaced, rotor resurfaced etc. At napa. They said that it is systemic problem with Sonatas. . Read more...

40 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/08/2009

The braking system on this vehicle is poorly engineered and extremely frustrating to the car owner. After 16,000 miles, my rear brakes began squealing. After inspection, it was determined that the back brakes are sticking on and grinding off against the rotor. This is a recurring problem that can not be fixed, with multiple replacements the only choice. In the four years I have owned the vehicle, I have gone thru 5 sets of brake pads and 4 rotors, with no end in sight as long as I keep this car.

41 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/25/2009

2007 Hyundai Sonata rear brake pads need replacing every 15,000 miles. I have had to replace these twice in two years. I have never had to do this with any other vehicle that I have owned, and most of my driving is highway driving. From reading other auto forums, this problem is common among Sonata owners.

42 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/28/2009

Right rear brake pads froze in the pad mounting bracket and wore down prematurely causing metal to metal contact between the brake pad backing plate and the brake rotor. Both my local dealer (suresky Hyundai of goshen NY) and Hyundai motor company refused to repair my vehicle under warranty. They asserted that "normal maintenance items", such as brake pads and rotors, were only covered for 12 months/12,000 miles. With all due respect, brake pads seizing on one wheel while the other 3 wheels are fine is not a normal maintenance event!.

43 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/28/2009

Rear brake pads wear out at 25k miles and are not covered under warranty.

44 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/17/2009

I took my car to a mechanic today to have the brake pads replaced and he found a corroded hole in the sub-frame assembly. He mentioned this was recalled by Hyundai last year but I was never notified of such a recall and I'm upset as this could have caused a very serious accident. Why was I not notified of the recall first of all, and what is Hyundai going to do to fix my car?.

45 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/13/2009

Purchased Hyundai Sonata recently and heard high pitched chirp/squeal sound in rear area of car. Searched internet to see if similar problems were identified. Learned that hundreds of people are experiencing similar issues with premature brake wear due to defective rear brake mechanisms. Brakes appear to be malfunctioning under normal road conditions and freezing brake pads against rotors. Rotors wear out from premature wear. This is a serious safety issue. Hyundai unresponsive to customer complaints indicating road salt is to blame. This is costing hundreds of americans hundreds of dollars in tough economic times not to mention the safety concerns of potentially failing brakes causing accidents. Investigation and action is needed to determine the cause of the defect and initiate a formal recall from Hyundai.

48 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/09/2009

Rear brakes on 2007 Hyundai Sonata acquired high pitched squeal, odor, and wheels were hot to the touch at 19,800 miles. Dealer replaced brakes pads and resurfaced rotor. Seems to be premature wear of rear brake pads and rotors due to defective rear brake mechanisms causing the pads to freeze against the rotors. Dealer maintains the brakes need "adjusting" every 10,000 miles to avoid the problem.

49 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/05/2009

Rear brakes wear out prematurely causing a potential safety hazard. The front brake pads are just half worn.

50 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/21/2009

A chirping noise and burning smell in my 2007 Hyundai Sonata sent me to my Hyundai dealer. $400 later the service manager told me that the brakes were rusty and seizing up. Invoice said, "20442 lr pads separating locked in slides resurfaced rear rotors, replaced pads, adjusted park brake, and serviced front brakes. " manager said it was due to the winter salt on our nh roads and that he'd been seeing a lot of these brake issues and had been complaining to Hyundai with no results. Manager said I need to have the rust removed from the brakes every 15,000 miles. Checked online and found that other folks are having the same problem and I see the same complaint here in your database. . Read more...

51 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Rear brake squealing and getting hot. Rear brakes on 2008 have premature wear due to brake pads hanging up on the slides. Had to replaced the old pads with new pad @ 16k miles.

52 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/10/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the service brakes never operated correctly on her vehicle. She felt as if the brakes were sticking and dragging. The dealer stated that the rear driver's side brake pad failed and the brakes were grinding metal-on-metal. The rear passenger side brake pads were near failure. The dealer stated that the cause of the failures was due to snow melting salts that were rusting the metal underneath the vehicle. The dealer estimated that it would cost over $500 to replace the brake pads. The contact was advised to have the brakes checked every few thousand miles. The current and failure mileages were less than 22,000.

53 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/20/2009

Replacing rear brakes pads and rotors because of worn parts on vehicle with relatively low mileage.

54 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

Grinding of rear brakes beginning at 37,000 miles. Car is driven all highway miles. Brought in for service and mechanic was shocked to see pads were gone and rotors worn beyond repair. He said front brakes should usually go first. Hyundai claimed pads should be removed and cleaned every 15,000 miles. Assuming a customer was denying the brake problem due to the low miles the loss of brakes could lead to a serious accident. Brakes and rotors will be close to $400 for repair.

55 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/29/2008

I have 2007 Hyundai Sonata with 21,000 miles. Brake pads were sticking causing hazardous driving and braking. The same problem occurred 3 times within 46,000 miles on my previous 2003 Hyundai accent. I believe the brakes are improperly engineered with metals which corrode prematurely in salt/snow.

56 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/30/2008

Complete 4 wheel brake pads and rotors were required at only 27,000 miles at a cost of $825. I am a very slow and careful driver and not hard on brakes. Dealer said all 4 wheels were metal to metal and Hyundai claims this is a wear item and not covered by warranty. This is way too soon and dangerous.

57 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/07/2008

Left rear wheel brake components had been excessively rusted, preventing the pads from releasing out of the drum. Wheel was dangerously other heated. Pad and drum were worn and required pad replacement and drum resurfacing.

58 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2005 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

At approximately 40,000 miles, the rear brake disintegrated due to dragging and I was informed it was my driving. Only one rear brake malfunctioned in this way, however all rotors had to be "turned down" and new brakes were installed all around even though all other 3 pads were like new. At 72,000 the front brake did the exact same thing and the rear brake was close to being detrimental to the rotor. The front rotors could not be "turned-down" again, so new rotors were applied. This particular mechanic, at a well know facility informed me that Hyundai's are notorious for wearing out brakes and they see this continued problem. They also informed me that the Hyundai dealer is quite aware of this issue. I am now on a "watch" at this mechanic's shop to keep from having yet another brake issue. Something causes the brakes to drag and wear quickly and not always the same brake. The brake peddle, after the first Hyundai service, went to floor and I was informed that the Sonata is designed for the "older" customer whose reaction time is slower and more unsteady, therefore the braking is longer and softer. After the new mechanic adjusted everything, my brakes are normal.
