Hyundai Sonata owners have reported 12 problems related to brake fluid leak (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Sonata based on all problems reported for the Sonata.
All 4 brake lines were corroded and leaking break fluid, which prevented the car from stopping when depressing the brake pedal. Mechanic thinks the plastic cover around the break lines may be trapping water and causing corrosion. This is hazardous and unsafe.

Upon starting the vehicle I received a loud chime and a warning on the small screen on the instrument cluster indicating a brake failure, and that I should not drive the car. The brake pedal went to the floor and there was a very loud grinding and chattering sound coming from the front of the car. There was almost no braking action. I turned the car off and attempted to restart it. The same symptoms occurred. I then checked outside of the car for leaking fluid. There was none. I opened the hood and inspected the brake fluid reservoir and found it approximately 3/4 full of brake fluid. I wiggled the electrical connections to the master cylinder and the fluid connections also. I got back in the car and attempted a restart. The car started without a problem.

Driving in light rain on normal pavement st louis county. Approached stop sign at end of steep hill. Applied brakes lightly and well in advance but car was not stopping. Realized that engine had stopped so nothing was working. Car began shaking violently as if brakes were trying to grab. Finally came to a stop in the middle of intersection - fortunately nobody was in front of us are attempting to cross intersection in other direction. Car was completely dead. Tried to restart but nothing. Had to move car so tried to start again - starter did not crank at all, but suddenly engine was running as if it had never stopped and all power was restored. Drove immediately to dealer thinking it was something to do with engine recall. Was able to get to the dealership about 5 miles away with no incident. After 3 days of being at dealer we were told that something in the brake fluid "module" had broken lose and brake fluid leaked into wire harness causing extreme corrosion. They believe the engine never actually stopped running, but rather the electrical signal was momentarily interrupted due to the corrosion. It was going to be a $5000 fix. We did not have car repaired. Dealership said they would send it to auction. This car must to be pulled off the road as it is a hazard to anyone who purchases it, even "as is". Reported to consumer affairs at Hyundai on 11/6/19. Spoke to a representative 11/14/19 and was told car would be taken out of service. I am reporting here to insure that it is indeed taken out of service. We could have been killed or seriously injured. Wife drives about 35 miles per day and it could have easily happened while she was driving to work.

Noticed a fluid leaking in the drive way. Upon investigation, it was brake fluid and the lines rusted through. Thank jesus my wife wasn't driving the car. The kicker is no brake warning light was displayed on the dash.

My brake light stop switch broke into pieces with normal use so the brake lights stay on when car is turned off. My front brake hose sprung a fluid leak that made the brakes fully stop working in the middle of a drive. The front brake hose split and cracked prematurely cuasing the brale fluid to empty out. The brake pedal went straight to the floor without stopping the vehicle when this event happened during a drive. My esc light is on big probblem im assuming. My passenger air bag light is on as well both indicate are off and non working.

My daughter was driving on a city street, and lost all brakes, she pulled into a parking lot and parked. I crawled under the vehicle to find brake fluid dripping under the rear passenger area. After further investigation, after removing factory plastic brake line shield, I found both brake lines totally corroded so bad that one was leaking. I then had to replace the brake lines & bleed. I do believe the plastic shield holding the road grime & moisture to be the culprit. Very dangerous situation!!!!.
The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. While the vehicle was parked, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard and brake fluid leaked from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake line and evaporator line were rusted and corroded due to salt and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was unknown.
Tl-the contact owns a 2003 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated the brake warning light was illuminated and the vehicle was leaking brake fluid. The contact had also stated that the vehicle air conditioner failed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the air conditioner compressor failed and the brake sensors were replaced. However, the air conditioning system was not repaired. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,967.

Brakes failed while driving down an incline in parking lot in tysons corner, virginia. Had to pump brakes to stop hitting the exit gate. Brake line rusted, broke, and all brake fluid leaked out. Car had 102127 miles. Never had a car with a brake line that rusted through. Mechanics fixed by replacing section of steel brake line under right side of body subframe that had rusted and split.

After exiting a restaurant parking lot I attained a speed of about 35mph when a traffic lite about 100yds ahead turned to red. I took my foot off the accelerator and after a few yards applied the brakes only to find the pedal going down to the floor with little or no braking action. I grabbed and the pulled the hand brake as hard as reasonable without breaking the handle or doing other damage to the emergency braking system. Although I stopped about 2-3 car lengths short of an accident I'm sure that use of the hand brake prevented a rear end collision. Only after I had driven a few hundred yards to get off the roadway did the red brake failure lite come on confirming that I had survived a sudden brake failure as opposed to a slow leak failure. With a rather shaky hand, I grabbed a flash light and while my passenger pumped the brake pedal I found that the brake fluid was leaking from a location about 16 inches in front of the left rear tire. The car is in the yard now but w/o a lift the location of the failure is unknown. Hundai did not seemed too concerned about the near accident stating there are no known brake issues but did give me a case number for reference, that number is 6046357. Since hundai did not seem too concerned about near accident so I will be taking the Sonata to a local dealer.
Complete failure of brake system due to rust and corrosion of brake lines. The 2001 Hyundai Sonata lines came apart due to rust. Reported incident to Hyundai consumer affairs and was told it would be covered under recall notice dated: 4-14-09 id# 09v124000 action# ea08016, which included quality issues with cars suspension due to rust and corrosion. Was notified by dealer today that Hyundai was not covering the defective brake lines, because it was not specifically called out in the recall. Fortunately, my son and I were in a parking lot when the brake failure occurred, pedal went all the way to the floor and fluid leaked out of the brake line, which had rusted through. I'm not sure of the scope of this defective, but obviously had we been on the freeway this could have been a life or death experience. Thankfully god was watching over us. Please investigate similar brake failures on this vehicle. Also if there is anything that can be done to help us resolve this matter we Hyundai it would be greatly appreciated.
