There have been previous recalls for Hyundai vehicles regarding the neutral safety switch/transmission range inhibitor failing to work properly, but it appears that this problem extends to vehicles outside of the previous recall window. The 2014 Hyundai Sonata se experiences a similar defect, as searches online will indicate a high number of forum posts and other resources where drivers outline their concerns. Specifically, on an intermittent basis, the car will fail to display a gear when starting, showing a blank symbol on the dash and not illuminating the gear shift column. This leaves the car unable to be shifted into any gear. It appears that a wide range of Hyundai vehicles have been effected by faulty neutral safety switches, and as I mentioned some vehicle years need to be recalled that were not previously done so in the last 'batch' of recalls for the similar issue.

The automatic transmission on the 2016 Hyundai Sonata hybrid went out on the car oct 31, 2019. My wife was driving the car, when she lost drivability of the car. The car would not go, she was able to park it on a side street. She restarted the car but would not go into gear, the engine was running. The car was towed to the closest dealership, when scanned, indicating of a transmission problem. The car has been at the dealership since oct 31, 2019 with no eta of when a new transmission will be available to repair the car. At this point I can not sale the car because it needs a transmission. Hyundai needs to give a date when the transmission will be available. The dealership has no time frame when they will get a transmission from Hyundai.

When I drive my Sonata, sometimes the gears do no switch. I can drive on a flat or inclined surface and it will act up. We've taken our car several times to the dealership for diagnostic testing to see what's going on. But when the car is connected or the serviceman drives the car, the car will switch gears and nothing is found on the diagnostic test. We currently driving a few states over and our car is not switching gears at times, affecting the gas mileage. My husband and I will decelerate until gears switch and then accelerate again.
Transmission is not going into gear, the shift gear is slipping and the what the display shows as the gear is not the actual gear the car is in or the gear display is blank and the car does not go into gear.
My car gear shift locks up. I cannot change gears from park to go in reverse or drive. I have to utilize the manual gear shift override every time I need to change gears. The car will be stationary and I must keep my feet on the brakes at all times as I fear it may shift on its own. It is a continuous problem that began 3 weeks ago.

The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. On several occasions, the transmission failed to shift gears without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 43,626.
My car will not go into gear, the shifter light won't light. I have to shut my car off and turn it back on. This doesn't happen every time I start my car just occasionally.
While sitting still at stop light on a city street with foot on the brake pedal and in drive- the car lurched slightly like it was trying to go forward. The brakes stopped it from moving. It felt a bit like the car shifted to a another gear. The whole event lasted about 2 seconds. Otherwise the car behaved normally. This has happened three to four times since we bought the car new in Dec. 2011. A disturbing event. We would like to know if others have encountered this, and is it dangerous?.

During labor day weekend, I was alerted on display that the "transmission temperature is high". I stopped for 40 minutes in a turnout area (the manual states that you need to wait 20 minutes in this case). I continued the trip, but the transmission was not shifting gear. I pushed the accelerometer and rpms were at 5000 and gear was not shifted (the speed was around 10-20 m/h). After a few attempts to increase rpms the gear shifted. The "check engine" light came on. I parked the car for 5-6 hours. On my way back the issue appeared after 20-30 minutes of driving. In my garage, I noticed that I'm not able to drive in the reverse direction. The reverse gear was not shifting. I felt like the vehicle was in neutral position. I was not able to park the vehicle. I had to push the car into the parking spot. The next day the light "check engine" turned off and the vehicle was shifting ok. I was able to drive the car to a Hyundai dealer. The service man was unable to verify the transmission issue. The diagnostic code was p191464. The service man contacted Hyundai fse. Fse advised replacing the shift motor actuator. The shift motor actuator was replaced. I picked the car up from the service today on September 25th. I drove from service to home without any issue ( approximately 6 miles).
I went to place the car in reverse and noticed that the gear shifter said r but the dash board had a 0 . The vehicle went into drive placed on the brakes placed the vehicle in park. The display on the dash still showed 0. I shut off the motor and re-started the motor and the dash indicated that the car was in park. I then went on line and saw there was a recall just issued for this. I have not received a recall notice from Hyundai.

3x the driver window button is inoperable. Would turn off car and then it would again work. The worst issue is this: started up car this morning 7-9-12 (this is the 3rd occurrence) and the doors do not lock, then I put it in reverse and it goes about 2 feet and it applies the brakes. I noticed each time the the gear console does not light up. The car actually does not go into gear. Each time I have turned off the ignition and restarted it and it works fine. It's going to the shop for the 30k check up and this will be brought up. The drivers window has been brought up and the dealer has said there was no problem. Wrong. There is when it doesn't work. I had one of these in 2001 and it too had electrical issues. My neighbor just sold their 05 Sonata due to electrical issues.

The first time I thought something strange was going on with my new car (purchased with 16,000 miles on it) at the 18,000 mile mark. . The car was stuck in 4th gear and would not change gears with the auto stick or with the paddles. I stopped the car and tried to pull out in traffic but had no power. I pulled over ASAP and turned the car off (rebooted the car) and everything worked again. On the Dec 17th,2011, (3 weeks later) I was pulling out of a friends house at 10pm and everything seem normal. However, as the car got to about 15mph the tach raced over to 5,000 rpms and then I heard a loud slam and the car shot forward. I recalled the last time the car acted strange so I checked to see what gear it was in and sure enough it was again in 4th gear. When I tried to change gears it would not change gears just as before. I pulled over and tired to reboot the car again, but this time it did not fix itself. I had to drive 30miles home, so I got on the interstate and headed home. The tach raced a few times, but because the car stayed in 4th gear I make it home safely. When I got home I discover the reverse was gone out as well. Now for the good news, I researched the issues one this and a few other site and discover I was not the only one with this problem. I took my car to the dealer this morning and asked for a new transmission. The service tech got me a loaner in less than 30mins I was on my way. Same car and color. I got a call from the dealer a couple of hours later saying they were going to replace the entire transmission. While and I not happy that my new car required a new transmission after only 3500 miles of me driving it and under 20,000 total miles, I am very happy how the dealer handled the entire issue. Hats off to eastern shore h of daphne, ala and thank god I got the 100,000 extended warranty. Will up date when I get my car back in 5 days.
Failed components: brakes & shift gear the brake pedal is not working most of the times when shifting the gear from park to drive mode (followed by reverse mode) I need to press the brake pedal very hard up to several times to shift the gear. I brought the vehicle to the dealer and it works fine for two days. It start happening after two of first service to the vehicle by dealer. I brought the vehicle again to dealer after 1 week and explained the problem again. Again they did some troubleshooting, they told me that they didn't identified the problem this time. I spoke with Hyundai customer support and they directed me to another dealer and asked me to document the problem. I took the vehicle to another dealer and they told me that this is a common issue and suggested me to unlock the "shift lock" in case of emergencies! I told them that shift lock is only useful in case of emergencies. But the brake pedal is not releasing the gear most of the times which is not acceptable. There is no answer from the dealer. Trying to contact Hyundai official support but nothing heard back from them at (after 2 weeks. ).
09v122000-I have taken my car to the dealership and they have refused to fix the car as they have not started their campaign yet. My car has no brake lights and the abs/esc light is on in the dash along with the check engine light. I cannot shift out of gear without depressing the shift release button.
